Watched an OK movie "The Savages"
I give it three stars. Deals with aging parents, life issues.
Picked out by ms. rawmuse.
I go for action-history-high principles, etc.
Marriage is give and take.

The moonbattress moron has the commandments wrong.
The commandment is "Thou shalt not do murder"
Not "thou shalt not kill"
We humans kill constantly for food.
It is a common mistake.

Sure, euros sneer at us. But a nation that believes the farm boy can make that shot into the small thermal exhaust port, just below the main port, can also defeat the Nazis and the Soviets, all the same century. And still find time to go to the moon and invent rock and roll while we're at it.

Two Middle East mothers are sitting in the cafe chatting over a pint

starts flipping through pictures and they start reminiscing.

"This is my oldest son Mohammed. He's 24 years old now" "Yes, I
remember him as a baby" says the other mother cheerfully. "He's a
martyr now, though" mum confides.

"Oh so sad dear," says the other.

"And this is my second son Kalid. He's 21."

"Oh, I remember him," says the other happily, "he had such curly
hair when he was born."

He's a martyr, too," says mum quietly.

"Oh gracious me," says the other.

"And this is my third son. My baby. My beautiful Ahmed. He's 18,"
she whispers.

"Yes," says the friend enthusiastically. "I remember when he first
started school."

"He's a martyr, also" says mum, with tears in her eyes.

After a pause and a deep sigh, the second Muslim mother looks
wistfully at the photographs and says...

"They blow up so fast, don't they

But what if not everyone agrees to the short straw method? What if two of the crew members refuse to choose a victim?

And/or, what if the person who draws the short straw refuses to abide by the agreement?

The question is a little too limited. In any endeavor of this type, one of the most important components is the forging of a team capable of carrying out missions under seemingly unbearable conditions of stress, complexity, difficulty, what-have-you.

This team will have a commitment to each other without which they cannot function. They will return together or die together, with the only exception being an individual sacrifice for the sake of the team.

So in the proper context, the question becomes only will you sacrifice yourself or will you tough it out with your team and hope for the best.

Taken out of the context of something like a space mission (or a military small squad, etc), this is a special case of the "needs of the many vs. the needs of the one". Again, acceptable solutions are individual sacrifice or solidarity. Solidarity is the only acceptable solution for the *group* to conclude, whereas either solution is appropriate for an individual.

Hillary Clinton and her driver were cruising along a country road one evening when an old cow loomed in front of the car. The driver tried to avoid it but couldn't -- the old cow was killed.

Hillary told her driver to go up to the farmhouse and explain to the owners what happened. She stayed in the car making phone calls to lobbyists.

About an hour later, the driver staggered back to the car with his clothes in disarray. He was holding a half empty bottle of expensive wine in one hand, an expensive Cuban cigar in the other and was smiling happily, smeared with lipstick.

"What happened?" asked Hillary. "Well," the driver replied, "the farmer gave me the cigar, his wife gave me the wine, and their beautiful twin daughters made mad passionate love to me."

"My God, what did you tell them?" asked Hillary.

The driver replied: "I said, I'm Hillary Clinton's driver, and I just killed the old cow."

She has claimed that her "great, great, great, great uncle" was John III Sobieski, one of the elected kings of Poland who saved Europe by riding West with the Polish army in 1683 to lift the siege of Vienna from Ottoman Turks.

Not an outrageous claim. I know a guy who was a cousin 16 times removed to Abe Lincoln.

Jacques Chirac, The French Prime Minister, was sitting
in his office wondering what kind of mischief he could perpetrate
against the United States when his telephone rang.

"Hallo, Mr. Chirac!", a heavily accented voice said.
"This is Paddy down at the Harp Pub in County Sligo,
reland. I am ringing to inform you that we are
officially declaring war on you!"

"Well, Paddy," Chirac replied, "This is indeed
important news! How big is your army?"

"Right now," said Paddy, after a moment's calculation,
"there is myself, me cousin Sean, me next door
neighbor Seamus, and the entire dart team from the
pub. That makes eight!"

Chirac paused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have
one hundred thousand men in my army waiting to move on
my command."

"Begorra!" said Paddy. "I'll have to ring you back!"
Sure enough, the next day, Paddy called again. "Mr.
Chirac, the war is still on. We have managed to get us
some infantry equipment!"

"And what equipment would that be, Paddy?" Chirac
asked. "Well, we have two combines, a bulldozer, and
Murphy's farm tractor."

Chirac sighed, amused. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I
have 6,000 tanks and 5,000 armored personnel carriers.
Also, I've increased my army to one hundred
fifty-thousand since we last spoke."

"Saints preserve us!" said Paddy. "I'll have to get
back to you."

Sure enough, Paddy rang again the next day. "Mr.
Chirac, the war is still on! We have managed to get ourselves airborne! We've modified Jackie McLaughlin's ultra-light
with a couple of shotguns in the cockpit, and four boys from the
Shamrock Pub have joined us as well!"

Chirac was silent for a minute and then cleared his
throat. "I must tell you, Paddy, that I have 100
bombers and 200 fighter planes. My military complex is surrounded by
laser-guided, surface-to-air missile sites. And since we last spoke,
I've increased my army to two hundred thousand!"

"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!", said Paddy, "I'll have to
ring you back."

Sure enough, Paddy called again the next day. "Top o'
the mornin', Mr. Chirac! I am sorry to tell you that
we have had to call off the war."

"I'm sorry to hear that," said Chirac. "Why the sudden
change of heart?"

"Well," said Paddy, "we've all had a long chat over a
bunch of pints, and decided there's no foo-kin way we
can feed two hundred thousand prisoners."

A Marine and a sailor were sitting in a bar one day arguing over which was the superior service.

After a swig of beer the Marine says, "Well, we had Iwo Jima."

Arching his eyebrows, the sailor replies, "We had the Battle of Midway."

"Not entirely true", responded the Marine. "Some of those pilots were Marines, in fact, Henderson Field on Guadalcanal was named after a Marine pilot* killed at the Battle of Midway."

The sailor responds, "Point taken."

The Marine then says, "We Marines were born at Tunn Tavern!"

The sailor, nodding agreement, says, "But we had John Paul Jones."

The argument continued until the sailor comes up with what he thinks will end the discussion. With a flourish of finality he says, "The Navy invented sex!"

I wonder if he's including Michigan and Florida count as part of those 57 states?

Obama could've correctly counted the states if he'd only have worn a flag pin.

I wonder how he spells "potato"?

To be fair, Obama is from Chicago, and when it comes to elections, they do have rather unusual ways of counting there.

192 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)  Fri, May 9, 2008 11:30:19pm

A regiment of army soldiers were hiking through a valley one fine day. All of a sudden, a Marine is standing on the ridge to one side and says "Hey, Army, you guys suck!"

The commander of the regiment orders a squad of soldiers to capture the Marine. The Marine and the squad of soldiers disappear behind the hills and two minutes later the Marine comes back and taunts them again. "Is that all you got?"

The commander of the regiment is angered by this and orders a company of soldiers to capture/kill the Marine. The company and the Marine disappear behind the hills and about five minutes later the Marine appears again and taunts them once more. "Come on, you guys can do better than that can’t you?" the Marine shouts.

The regimental commander then orders an entire battalion to kill the Marine. The Marine and the battalion of soldiers disappear behind the hills. About a half hour passes then the commander of the battalion crawls back over the hills, beaten, bruised, and bleeding to death. He shouts back to the regimental commander, "Fall back! He tricked us! There’s two of them!"

Actually, eye pain is way worse than teeth pain, IMHO, but childbirth just might beat them all!

I can't even imagine how painful natural childbirth must be. The worst pain I've ever had was from a torn quadricep muscle when I was struck by a car. It was excruciating and lasted for several days in the hospital - I remember begging the nurses for more demerol shots.

Any suggestions about where I could find some music or info about it? We won't have time to go into it in depth, but I'd like to have something about music in the study. Maybe there's a CD of Indian folk music I could get, e.g. (?)

bone pain is no fun.....

they drilled holes in various portions of my foot when they rebuilt my ankle. it hurt like hell for weeks.

they day they debrided my hand in '83 after the ATWSS cartridge went off next to it, the Army doc didn't even give me an aspirin before or after. straight out of an old western, i was biting down on a drive on rag as he ripped the blisters and damaged skin off my palm.

then he got pissed because i kicked a hole in the wall during the process, at least until i pointed out that i could have kicked that hard the other way, where he was standing.

Worst pain I ever had was a kidney stone. I had no clue what it was. I drove myself to the hospital emergency room and it took 7 hours before they gave me anything for it. The worst part was the registering nurse told me as soon as I checked in "Oh, you got a kidney stone". I just had to wait 7 hours for them to process thru other people and get to me. Once I got in, got an IV and slept for an hour. When I woke up, the news was just breaking that they found Saddam Hussein.

Egads, Michael Moore was right in Sicko. Our healthcare sucks. In glorious Cuba our beloved Fidel would have fixed that kidney stone with one wave of his magic wand.

Ok, now some excitement for us bench-warmers (until the morning crew comes in...)

Update from South America:
CHILE VOLCANO SCENARIO “SIMILAR TO POMPEII”

Chilean authorities are considering the possibility that Region X’s Chaitén Volcano, now in its eighth day of continuous eruption, might collapse and thus release a torrent of red-hot pyroclastic material (burning gas and rock) that could devastate the surrounding area.
[...]
The vulcanologist suspects such flows are responsible for a noted temperature increase (of between 7 and 17 degrees Celsius) in the nearby Chaitén and Raya Rivers.
[...]

It is possible that such an event would be bigger than Pinatubo...

Lots of ash, as seen from this latest satellite image from OSEI (

Hezbollah phone system sparks new Lebanon unrest

BEIRUT (AFP) — A private telephone network built by the Shiite Hezbollah organisation is at the centre of a political storm that has brought Lebanon perilously close to a new civil war.

The landline network, which Telecommunications Minister Marwan Hamadeh said was installed with the help of Hezbollah's patron Iran, was crucial to Hezbollah thwarting a massive Israeli assault in a ferocious war two years ago.

The Israelis jammed cellphone networks to prevent Hezbollah commanders from communicating with units in the field, but the landline network continued to function.

An attack on the network could severely curtail Hezbollah's ability to defend itself from Israel or from an attack by domestic opponents.

Hamadeh recently told the pan-Arab daily Asharq al-Awsat that the network had been completed in southern Lebanon, along the Israeli border, as well in the eastern Bekaa Valley, in southern Beirut and several Christian areas in Mount Lebanon.

He said work was currently under way to complete infrastructure in the north.

After a marathon cabinet session on Monday, Prime Minister Fuad Siniora's government declared the network illegal.

re: #287 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

What's a shame is that the Syrians with Hezbollah seem to have killed all of the government leaders in Lebanon who had any balls.

What the government should do, rather than playing patty-cake with Hezbollah, is lower the boom. No more "You can keep the illegal network if you lift your siege of Beirut", no more "I will resign if you will stop shooting at us". Tell Hizbollah to go f*ck themselves, and be prepared to die like men when the war comes. Who knows--the government might win.

Until then, all they are doing is legitimizing Hezbollah, who will at this rate become the rulers of the country very soon. At least make them take it. Don't give it to them.

In his prepared remarks Obama was ready to start blasting Arizona Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, to show the Illinois Democrat is moving on to the general election campaign.

But first the freshman senator had to go through all the obligatory delighted to see you, delighted to be here part of stump speeches that also require that you actually know where you are.

Obama pulled that off O.K. But then he drifted away from the text a tad, as rookies are wont to do sometimes, forgetting how exhausting this primary process is and should be. And trusting in their instincts, their very tired instincts.

"It is wonderful to be back in Oregon," Obama said. "Over the last 15 months, we’ve traveled to every corner of the United States. I’ve now been in 57 states? I think one left to go. Alaska and Hawaii, I was not allowed to go to even though I really wanted to visit, but my staff would not justify it." [Link: tammybruce.com...]

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like "Make the World Go Away" made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died Thursday morning, days short of his 90th birthday.

Arnold died at a care facility near Nashville, said Don Cusic, a professor at Belmont University and author of the biography "Eddy Arnold: I'll Hold You in My Heart." His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip.

A MUSLIM Police Association is to be established in Scotland, it was revealed yesterday.
The group, headed by Strathclyde Police, will aim to encourage recruitment and retention among Muslims, improve understanding of the faith and tackle "Islamophobia".
PC Amar Shakoor, who was Scotland's first Muslim police officer, is supporting the scheme. He said: "In the past few years, there has been some negativity about Islam affecting the Muslim communities”.
Bashir Maan, convener of the Muslim Council of Scotland, said: "The community probably has not as much trust in Muslims as they used to”

WIFE No. 1: Whom does Allah mean by “your women”.

PREACHER: By your women Allah means your wives, your daughters and your right hand possessions.” Thus sex with wives, daughters and slave girls is halal according to this aya.”

WIFE No. 1: “Sex with daughters is halal? Isn't that incest . I don’t think most Muslims approve of that”.

PREACHER: “Most Muslims are influenced by kafir laws and hardly practice Islam of quran and sunna. They shun many Quranic tenets which were practiced by our prophet and his sahaba (companions).”

Wife No.2: “They do?”

PREACHER. “Sure they do.. For example they shun sex with underage girls which is sanctioned by Allah in 65.4 and was practiced by our prophet. Our prophet had sex with 9 year old Ayesha and god knows how many under age slave girls captured from kuffar. They shun polygamy (4.3) and changing wives (4.80) which has been mainstay of Muslim household's. Prophet, had nine wives when he died. Hasan, our prophet’s beloved grandson used to marry in the morning, had sex all day and divorced in the evening. They shun sex with slave girls (4.3, 4.24, 23.633.50, and 70.30) and forget that lure of sex with captured slave women was the inspiration for Mujahids to capture half the world in record time. Our prophet had sex with hundreds of enslaved women after raiding kuffar villages. He was sanctioned 20% of all booty by Allah including captured kuffar women.

Wife No. 3: “But did our prophet practice incest too"?

PREACHER: “Sure he did”

Love,family and friendship in Islam...

.In an instance of honour killing in a village Karnal, Haryana, a young couple was murdered by the girl's family.

The entire village said what the family did was right since 20-year-old Sunita had eloped with her lover from the same village nine months ago.

Family feels no remorse over the murder and Sunita's mother said, ''We did it because she deserved it.''

Also, Sunita was six months pregnant when she died.

''If you belong to the same village, we consider them siblings. They have been killed to set an example, so that no one repeats the same mistake,'' said neighbour of the family.

I thought this was some kind of bizarre typo when I saw the headline in the BBC.

But it's real! Not a typo!

You may think I'm making this up, but click the link to confirm.

Conclusive proof that British English and American English are not the same language:

Great tits cope well with warming

At least one of Britain's birds appears to be coping well as climate change alters the availability of a key food.

Researchers found that great tits are laying eggs earlier in the spring than they used to, keeping step with the earlier emergence of caterpillars.
Writing in the journal Science, they point out that the same birds in the Netherlands have not managed to adjust.
Understanding why some species in some places are affected more than others by climatic shifts is vital, they say.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) commented that other species are likely to fare much worse than great tits as temperatures rise.

The research uses a long record of great tits in a breeding site at Wytham Woods near Oxford, where observations began in 1947.
...
The caterpillars' appearance is triggered by ambient temperature - that has been shown in the laboratory - and it is believed that great tits also begin their breeding cycle in response to temperatures.

I suspect this will become an internet classic!

‘Mosque’ raid drill irks Muslims in US

American Muslim civil rights groups have denounced an exercise by US security officials in which a place designated as a ‘mosque’ was stormed in Irving.

Over 120 officials from about 30 government agencies participated in the drill, targeting a community facility that had been named the ‘Irving mosque’. Officers from the Illinois Law-Enforcement Alarm System stormed the building using an armoured car. One ‘hostage’ was hooked up to an explosive device and the ‘suspects’ in the ‘mosque’ released nerve gas.

American Muslim Voice president Khalid Saeed said the outrage should be offensive to the sensibilities of all civilised Americans and it should be condemned in strongest possible way because it sent a wrong message about a large peaceful segment of American society and Islam.

Why don't you see: the beach sites, the Indian period, lots and lots of wonderful places; the Colony, may beautiful churches, convents, houses, etc. You can visit cities like Guanajuato that the whole city is considered a museum.
Maybe look around and see what you find ;)

I think my biggest regret as far as travelling was concerned was that I missed out on the chance to see a good deal of Mexico by train before they privatized the railways there and axed most of the passenger trains.....
