Obama Changes His 'Unconditional' Position - Update: Video Added

Sat, May 10, 2008 at 12:02:40 pm PST

In yet another New York Times advocacy piece for Barack Obama, we discover that the Obama campaign is trying to rewrite history again.

Susan E. Rice, a former State Department and National Security Council official who is a foreign policy adviser to the Democratic candidate, said that “for political purposes, Senator Obama’s opponents on the right have distorted and reframed” his views. Mr. McCain and his surrogates have repeatedly stated that Mr. Obama would be willing to meet “unconditionally” with Mr. Ahmadinejad. But Dr. Rice said that this was not the case for Iran or any other so-called “rogue” state. Mr. Obama believes “that engagement at the presidential level, at the appropriate time and with the appropriate preparation, can be used to leverage the change we need,” Dr. Rice said. “But nobody said he would initiate contacts at the presidential level; that requires due preparation and advance work.”

The problem is, Barack Obama did say he’d meet with Iran unconditionally, in front of a lot of people, at the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate last July.

He was specifically and directly asked if he would meet with the leader of Iran (and the leaders of several other “so-called rogue states”) without preconditions, in the first year of his presidency, and his answer was, “I would.”

Democratic Debate Transcript, CNN/YouTube - Council on Foreign Relations.

QUESTION: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since.

In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous.

There’s some “reframing” going on here, all right.

Hot Air - History re-written: Obama never said he would meet personally with Iran without precondition, says advisor

Here’s the video:

(Video player requires Flash Player.)

UPDATE at 5/10/08 3:34:47 pm:

Obama’s own web site refutes his new spin: Barack Obama | Change We Can Believe In | Foreign Policy.

Diplomacy: Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions. Now is the time to pressure Iran directly to change their troubling behavior. Obama would offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation. Seeking this kind of comprehensive settlement with Iran is our best way to make progress.

People do over use hyperbole.

It shows he was thinking typical moonbat thinking, "I'm going to at least try to talk to our enemies, maybe avert a war, and without asking them to make all these promises or deals before I'll even talk to them."

Sounds so "reasonable" until someone starts pointing out all the specific things that this sentence means Obama will accept in dictator actions and still talk to them.

Here's a small irony.

I never took the candidate's spouse into consideration when deciding who to vote for. Until the Clinton era.

Now I scrutinize the spouse just as much as the candidate. And guess what? Even if I agreed with 90% of Barry's policy positions, his wife makes my blood run cold.

That woman is pure poison.

I've always wondered wy Kerry picked him to be the keynote speaker at the Dem. Convention.

Putting together all the rumors/whispers I'm hearing around here, I gather a lot of his support is coming from people who expect positions in his admin.

Example: Pat Leahy wants to be Attorney General.

Add to that, the idea of another Clinton/Two-fer gives alot of Dems a huge migraine.

On my cable outlet CNN and FNC are one station apart, so with one click I change between the two. They were both just running live Obama coverage. Quite interesting in the lighting level that CNN used compared to FNC. I would imagine that they both were using the same satellite feed from the same camera. CNN was definitely 'upping' the brightness.

It staggers the mind.
The fact that he is the probable nominee tells me the rot in our elite, if not in society as a whole, runs very deep.
I am not an optimist.

#49 missouri boy 5/10/08 12:26:28 pm 0

IMHO...the Democratic Party is treating poor Hillary so bad that she should do what her good friend Joe Lieberman did and change party affiliation to Independent.
As an Independent, Hillary would then be available to be Juan McCain's VP.
Now that's the ticket! LOL!

ps: It could happen...

This is a debate question, and it both calls his leadership bold, but makes the judgment call that meeting with those dictators would "bridge the gap" as if talking to them is all we need not have opposing goals with each of them.

You can't put pre-conditions on terrorist thugs. Unless one considers FOX NEWS to be a terrorist organization. Then you can. It's quite simple. Talking to FOX NEWS "legitimizes" the enemy,so pre-conditions are necessary or,better yet, don't talk to FOX at all. Talking to murdering, low life terrorist thugs is O.K. because they are not the enemy. Pre-conditions are not necessary with your friends. See how simple this all is when you understand who the left considers a friend, and who they consider an enemy?
