Obama Changes His 'Unconditional' Position - Update: Video Added

Sat, May 10, 2008 at 12:02:40 pm PDT

In yet another New York Times advocacy piece for Barack Obama, we discover that the Obama campaign is trying to rewrite history again.

Susan E. Rice, a former State Department and National Security Council official who is a foreign policy adviser to the Democratic candidate, said that “for political purposes, Senator Obama’s opponents on the right have distorted and reframed” his views. Mr. McCain and his surrogates have repeatedly stated that Mr. Obama would be willing to meet “unconditionally” with Mr. Ahmadinejad. But Dr. Rice said that this was not the case for Iran or any other so-called “rogue” state. Mr. Obama believes “that engagement at the presidential level, at the appropriate time and with the appropriate preparation, can be used to leverage the change we need,” Dr. Rice said. “But nobody said he would initiate contacts at the presidential level; that requires due preparation and advance work.”

The problem is, Barack Obama did say he’d meet with Iran unconditionally, in front of a lot of people, at the CNN/YouTube Democratic debate last July.

He was specifically and directly asked if he would meet with the leader of Iran (and the leaders of several other “so-called rogue states”) without preconditions, in the first year of his presidency, and his answer was, “I would.”

Democratic Debate Transcript, CNN/YouTube - Council on Foreign Relations.

QUESTION: In 1982, Anwar Sadat traveled to Israel, a trip that resulted in a peace agreement that has lasted ever since.

In the spirit of that type of bold leadership, would you be willing to meet separately, without precondition, during the first year of your administration, in Washington or anywhere else, with the leaders of Iran, Syria, Venezuela, Cuba and North Korea, in order to bridge the gap that divides our countries?

OBAMA: I would. And the reason is this, that the notion that somehow not talking to countries is punishment to them — which has been the guiding diplomatic principle of this administration — is ridiculous.

There’s some “reframing” going on here, all right.

Hot Air - History re-written: Obama never said he would meet personally with Iran without precondition, says advisor

Here’s the video:

Youtube Video

UPDATE at 5/10/08 3:34:47 pm:

Obama’s own web site refutes his new spin: Barack Obama | Change We Can Believe In | Foreign Policy.

Diplomacy: Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions. Now is the time to pressure Iran directly to change their troubling behavior. Obama would offer the Iranian regime a choice. If Iran abandons its nuclear program and support for terrorism, we will offer incentives like membership in the World Trade Organization, economic investments, and a move toward normal diplomatic relations. If Iran continues its troubling behavior, we will step up our economic pressure and political isolation. Seeking this kind of comprehensive settlement with Iran is our best way to make progress.

I've always wondered wy Kerry picked him to be the keynote speaker at the Dem. Convention.

Putting together all the rumors/whispers I'm hearing around here, I gather a lot of his support is coming from people who expect positions in his admin.

Example: Pat Leahy wants to be Attorney General.

Add to that, the idea of another Clinton/Two-fer gives alot of Dems a huge migraine.

Talking to murdering, low life terrorist thugs is O.K. because they are not the enemy. Pre-conditions are not necessary with your friends. Jeremiah Wright's 'Trumpet'
The content of the magazine produced by Barack Obama's pastor reveals the content of his character.
by Stanley Kurtz
05/19/2008, Volume 013, Issue 34

To the question of the moment--What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?--I answer, Obama knew everything, and he's known it for ages. Far from succumbing to surprise and shock after Jeremiah Wright's disastrous performance at the National Press Club, Barack Obama must have long been aware of his pastor's political radicalism. A careful reading of nearly a year's worth of Trumpet Newsmagazine, Wright's glossy national "lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious," makes it next to impossible to conclude otherwise.

Wright founded Trumpet Newsmagazine in 1982 as a "church newspaper"--primarily for his own congregation, one gathers--to "preach a message of social justice to those who might not hear it in worship service." So Obama's presence at sermons is not the only measure of his knowledge of Wright's views. Glance through even a single issue of Trumpet, and Wright's radical politics are everywhere--in the pictures, the headlines, the highlighted quotations, and above all in the articles themselves. It seems inconceivable that, in 20 years, Obama would never have picked up a copy of Trumpet. In fact, Obama himself graced the cover at least once (although efforts to obtain that issue from the publisher or Obama's interview with the magazine from his campaign were unsuccessful).

Ironing is dangerous. When I was in college, one of the boys' dorms burned. The fire started when a boy threw water on a small electrical fire at the iron connection.

We all stood outside our dorm, giving coffee to the volunteer firemen and laughing at the girls who were flushed out with the boys (this was back in the "no girls in the boys dorm" days).

Picture this. Obama gets Dem nomination. Hillary pi$$ed,starts 3rd party "Centrist" ticket in order to "bring America together and heal our nation." By the time the Republican convention rolls around, people begin to wake up and see McCain ain't going to have the support to beat Obama. To many sell outs by McCain is going to cost him. Republicans nominate someone else other than McCain. Then,Hillary asks McCain to be her V.P. in order to "show America that both parties can work together when they replace political loyalty with loyalty to the American people".

Think it is too far fetched? Consider this. The Democrat party will nominate Obama because they don't want to lose the black vote. If they nominate Hillary, the black vote is history and they know it. Hillary will not beat McCain if she gets the Democrat nomination because it will drive the black vote, being HIGHLY PI$$ED AT DEMS for a Hillary nomination, to McCain. On the Republican side,McCain has sold out conservative America to the point that he can not beat Obama. Conservatives are rightly pi$$ed about McCain and,if they sit this one out,Obama is a shoe in and the Republicans know it. The Republicans can not expect to win with McCain. They must nominate someone else or forget the White House. I said Long ago I expect a Clinton/McCain ticket,or a McCain/Clinton ticket. I haven't changed my mind.

I have a different take.

We're all being duped by this Hillary / Obama "fight". In the end, Hillary will be the nominee, and she will pick Obama as her running mate. WHY?
2 reasons
FIRST. She'll do it in the name of "PARTY UNITY", "proving" that she can mend fences. Most of this flap has been over the ethnic vote. While she's out courting the Hispanic vote, Obama has been "taking" the black vote from her. This will now put both minority votes back in her camp.
SECOND. This "fight" that they are having will "PROVE" that Obama is now battle tested. That disways the charge that will come from thr repubs that he is too inexperienced to be on the ticket

132 mich-again  5/10/08 1:03:56 pm reply quote

I don't agree with all of McCain's views, but then I have never agreed with all of the views of anyone who has ever run for office in my lifetime. (The first election I had interest in was Eisenhower.) I have, however, been watching McCain for a long time - since he was not much older than 17 or so.

One thing you can say about McCain that you cannot say about Barrack Hussein Obama or Jon Carry or Bill & Hillary Clinton - a long list of others too - is that every single day since McCain was 17 or so he has served his country and he has always done his best to serve with HONOR.

Honor is an old-fashioned concept, I know, but one that makes up for lots of other flaws. John McCain comes from a long line of people that have served this nation with honor. He knows what honor & duty to country means. Of all the candidates I have seen in all these many years, McCain strikes me as one who has well and truly earned the right to be called POTUS.

I have not heard Obama call Iran evil, which is clearly part of the world's axis of evil as W. said. So, here are my two questions for Obama: 1. Is the Iranian government evil? 2. Charles,

A commenter Hot Air found this on Obama's own website:

Grab a screen shot while you still can, I already have.

Fact check, CNN: Sadat traveled to Jerusalem in 1977, not 1982. Also worth mentioning: Israel always sought peaceful relations with its neighbors; it was Israel's neighbors that rejected peace. Iran does not want relations with the United States (U.S. embassy storming and hostage taking, anybody?), and it's up to Iran to change that, just like it was up to Egypt to reach out to Israel. Asking Obama if he will repeat Sadat's move is misleading. America is not in the wrong here. It's the authoritarian regimes, stupid!

The Obama campaign is lying about what Obama said. The video shows what he said. But they also compound the lie by saying that it is his political foes who are changing what he said, while it's actually his own campaign that is re-writing what he said.

So the Obama campaign is telling a double-lie. Lying about what he said, and demonizing those who are telling the truth about what he said.

The video exposes both lies, and should be seen by the voting public to get to know the basic dishonesty of the Obama campaign.

yes. And furthermore, self-sainted bHussein is the one who says he's for "change"-- when TALKING is all the left has ever done, all they will ever do. Change? WHAT CHANGE? it's the Emperor's new clothes all over again-- same bucknaked idiot thinkin' nobody gonna see.

Well... that's pretty blatant. But we won't hear a peep about it from the MSM. I'm betting that the only thing he could do publicly that would turn the tables with them would be to like... eat meat while wearing a fur coat in the front seat of his new escalade.

Watching Obama twist in the wind would be amusing if it weren't so serious for all of you. This is a person who should NEVER become POTUS. He is a man who would destroy America.
Read #169 Tasty beverages' link to his foreign policies.
Read it very carefully.
Take into account what we have found out about this man, his associates and their influence upon him.
Now see how that statement is constructed and the punctuation that is used.
Think about the implications that are tucked away behind the self serving and sentimental prose.
He will change America all right. He talks about race, but he will turn it into a chasm not heal it. He will tax the productive members of society (in his mind white) to pay for the unproductive (in his mind black), tax corporations and business' (the Man) and will import people by the boat load. But who? Those who will vote for him, those who may not be an asset to the country (and very possibly a real threat) and they won't be white (he is a racist after all). He will bankrupt you as punishment (courtesy of the WAB) and will destroy Americas ability to do good in the world (I don't fancy the Militarys' chances either) by agreeing with or capitulating to those who hate you. I think he will throw Israel to the wolves.
He said about immigration *...Your future is our future and OUR moment is now*. He does not see himself as an American!
Be afraid.
Be very afraid.

"Obama is the only major candidate who supports tough, direct presidential diplomacy with Iran without preconditions"

How can you be "tough" if there are no preconditions?
