"I like whiskey thats why I don't drink it"
Robert E Lee

The only quote I have memorized.

7 MigueldowninMexico  Sun, May 11, 2008 3:18:23am

The media here are fawning over Obama.
They are all asking that Hillary withdrows!
I don't get what do they profit in telling people who can not influence the actual vote this kind of things?
I guess to create a whole "ambience" positive to one and negative to the other.

So, Obama has been anointed by the msm here, and probably in many other countries.

I'm living the weirod situation -for me- to root for Hilllary lol

9 MigueldowninMexico  Sun, May 11, 2008 3:21:33am

The left in Mexico is badly divided now. Really badly, they are calling each other traitor, and and worse things.

And, in a similar weird situation I find myself rooting for one of the two camps in which the left has divided here.

Incredible...

Is the left dividing in two big opposing camps everywhere?
This is an interesting development.

I slightly misquoted Robert E Lee.

Should have been

"I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it. - Robert E. Lee

Doesn't change the meaning just I said it was a quote.

re: #11 RTLM

What's the deal in Burma Karridine?

(the real deal)

RTLM, we've been getting updates 3-4 times a day on national TV news channels... in a word? VERY BAD!

No potable water, no shelter from the elements (new front moving in as I type), thousands of now seriously-rotten human (and other) corpses posing a serious health threat; little (if any) food, no way to cook it if they have it...

Now the debacle part: the illegitimate Burmese government is stealing aid; what little is allowed out to the suffering Burmese is REPACKED or REMARKED as "From the Burmese Generals" so it takes an extra 2-days, MIN, to get there...

NO distribution teams have been allowed in to my knowledge; only a few hundred refugees have been allowed into Thailand; ALL private aid MUST BE HAND-CARRIED (read, SMUGGLED) into the nation by expat Burmese; relief efforts are being systematically STYMIED by the thugs in power...

Do you get this picture? FILTHY! reprehensible! terrible, and just right for any of several epidemics, raging through the survivors!

Im just saying that a disaster like this is tailor made for despotic regimes, It takes minds off issues (other than living), it "thins" disaffected mobs, the government can look like a hero (hence the repackaging the aid), and gives the government an "excuse" to clamp down even further. Its been done befor.

Because after WW2 the US financed the construction of the UN on the condition that it will fight her anti drug campaign and destroy all weed production (following the law from 1937 I think). Same thing happened in Italy: the south was the main European hemp growing ground for textile and after the war all work was brought to a halt

re: #83 DJ Wahaba

If hemp were the grain of choice for food it would be a more universal food crop.

If it had more tolerance to cold history would talk about the great hemp famine.

If it was a great food source in warm climates Asians wouldn't eat rice.

Governments exert power but a government without people is useless.

DJ, the government didn't give a flip about weed until William Randolph Hearst began his crusade against the holy weed. They had other fish to fry, so to speak.

Good one, I know about the story that it became illegal because Du Pont invented the Nylon fiber and bribed the American government to pass the tax law of 1937 so the could dominate the textile industry (which makes sense considering the propaganda film of the US government from 1942 "Hemp for Victory", youtube it).

Any grass keeps a hillside from sliding. Hemp was useful for it's stalk that one could make rope from before WWII. Now we have better materials for rope and better crops for food.

If hemp were all you say it is the people growing it in the 3rd world would be eating those seeds before they sent us the leaves. I've picked too many seeds for that too be true.

"The essence of oligarchical rule is not father-to-son inheritance, but the persistence of a certain world-view and a certain way of life ... A ruling group is a ruling group so long as it can nominate its successors... Who wields power is not important, provided that the hierarchical structure remains always the same."
~ George Orwell, 1984

Oligarchy (Greek Oligarkhia) is a form of government where political power effectively rests with a small elite segment of society (whether distinguished by wealth, family or military powers). The word oligarchy is from the Greek words for "few" (oligon) and "rule" (arkho). Compare with autocracy (rule by one person) and democracy (rule by the majority).

Israel will eventually have to act, as Lebanon turns into Iranian colony

Alex Fishman Published: 05.11.08, 10:01 / Israel Opinion

The weekend’s events in Lebanon are a painful reminder that in a year Iran will be officially situated on our northern border. We need to get used to it.

Barring any surprises, in the next parliamentary elections Lebanon will fall into the hands of Hizbullah and turn into an Iranian colony. We are only minor players in this story. This isn’t 1982, and we have no desire or ability to intervene. We also don’t have powerful allies in Lebanon, so we can’t do anything.

ALGIERS, Algeria, May 9 (Compass Direct News) – An Algerian Christian detained five days for carrying a Bible and personal Bible study books was handed a 300-euro (US$460) fine and a one-year suspended prison sentence last week, an Algerian church leader said.

Last Tuesday (April 29) a court in Djilfa, 150 miles south of Algiers, charged the 33-year-old Muslim convert to Christianity with “printing, storing and distributing” illegal religious material. A written copy of the verdict has yet to be issued.

The Protestant, who requested anonymity for security reasons, told fellow Christians in his home city of Tiaret that police pressured him to return to Islam while in custody.

The conviction is the latest in a wave of detentions and court cases against Algeria’s Protestants and Catholics. Since January police and provincial officials have ordered the closure of up to half of the country’s 50 estimated Protestant congregations.

Cyclone related:

Saw an news story that interviews a man in Burma as he laments the dead bodies floating by. When asked why he and his (remaining) neighbors don't do anything about them, he replies that it is the government's responsibility. I kid you not.

A couple of observations:

(1) The horrible events could overwhelm anyone, that is understandable, and if I had to dispose of bodies bloating in the sun, I would probably toss my cookies every 10 minutes. Still, leaving bodies lying around has to be understood to be unhealthy. Right? Self-reliance anyone? If the choice is I have to dispose of bodies to help protect my family versus wait for them all to get a disease-isn't the answer sad, but obvious?

(2) The Hurricane Katrina "It's-the-government's-fault" bit only works in any way if your government actually cares about you...I have all the evidence I need to suggest that the junta in Burma cares only about themselves, their families and their pets. Unlike the people in New Orleans, these people in Burma are really "on thier own".

These people don't need aid. They don't need packages. They need a combination of George Washington/the 101st Airborne/and the First Marine Division to save them.

When I came across this article it made me sick and damn mad. Our finest and bravest deserve better than this.

It has since been rectified but that doesn't undo the insensitivities done.

Seattle Times

The U.S. military has, since 2001, cremated some of the remains of U.S. service members killed in Iraq, Afghanistan and elsewhere in a Delaware facility that also cremates pets, a practice that ended Friday when the Pentagon banned the arrangement.

The facililty, in an industrial park near Dover Air Force Base, has cremated about 200 service members, manager David Bose said Friday night. It uses separate crematories a few feet apart to cremate humans and animals, he added.

Pentagon officials said they do not think any humans were cremated in the pet crematory. "We have absolutely no evidence whatsoever at this point that any human remains were at all ever mistreated," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said late Friday.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates found "the site and signage insensitive and entirely inappropriate for the dignified treatment of our fallen," Morrell said. "The families of the fallen have the secretary's deepest apology," he said.

The revelation came to light when an Army officer who works at the Pentagon traveled to Delaware on Thursday to attend the cremation of a military comrade.

Nobel laureate Leon Lederman has dubbed the theoretical boson “the God particle” because its discovery could unify understanding of particle physics and help humans “know the mind of God.” Higgs told reporters he is hoping to receive confirmation of his theory by the time he turns 80 in May 2009.

Which one of the four Adopt-A-Highway signs pictured above was removed because some people found it offensive?

Although the KKK sign troubled many people, the ACLU fought for the Klan's rights and won.

Tha Nazi Party signs, put up at a cost to taxpayers of $500, merely "draws ire".

The NAMBLA sign "is a matter of personal taste and has nothing to do with legality." (A subsequent report opens the possibility that NAMBLA did not itself apply to adopt the highway, but a prankster put the NAMBLA name on the application. So these signs apparently came down on a technicality.)

However, a group that advocates enforcement of immigration laws must be silenced

Hey Babba......

.Ben Stein has a dangerous idea. His idea is that professors and teachers who express skepticism about Darwinism are likely to find themselves not granted tenure, castigated and ridiculed, and disqualified from the opportunity to have research papers published.

Stein documents this in his new movie "Expelled, No Intelligence Allowed." As you would expect, it is drawing highly critical reviews from the usual suspects. One agitated reviewer on a blog said the movie was filled with half-truths and outright lies. It would be interesting to see what this same source had to say about the latest documentary movies promoted by Al Gore and Michael Moore.
Having reviewed the movie myself, it appeared that Stein was trying to make the case for academic freedom, not attempted to convert anyone to a particular ideological position. Stein, in fact, never makes it known what particular beliefs he holds personally, he merely makes it known that he is disgusted by the idea that someone could lose their job over honest doubts about Darwinism.

re: #183 BulgarWheat

Let it rip, Granny.

/class is in session

Well first off, you need to teach her to find NO all by herself rather than play the evil beast. Thus Granny's Twenty Questions -

*Why do you want to do that?
*How does that benefit you? Harm you?
*Is it legal? Could you get into trouble with the law?
*How does that make you feel?
*Is there something else that might happen?
*How would that make you feel?
Rinse and repeat the two directly above until you have covered all possibilities - and make HER come up with the options. Don't offer any help or criticism. Just ask the questions.
*If she gets stuck, then politely ask a "could _____ happen?" question
*Could someone get hurt? (physically or emotionally)
*How would that make you feel?
Feel free to add anything you like.
End up with "What do you think is the best/smartest/wisest thing to do?"

Very annoying to them. Extremely effective and gives them the decision making tools to take into adulthood.

Note
that once you have given her the right to make the decision, you cannot take it back if you don't like the decision she makes.

Thus, you will want to set some hard and fast rules that are not to be broken under any cirumstances. Things like no tatoos, no green hair and no smoking.

Granny's First Law of Curfews: Don't!

If you think back to when you were a kid/teen, you might recall that the very first thing you did, the thing you would move heaven and earth to do was that which was forbidden. This especially applies to curfews. By setting up a rule (and curfews always seem to be the parent's rule) you are begging to have it broken. And remember that there is not the first thing you can do after curfew that you can't do just as easily as before curfew.

No curfew. (Also no going out on school nights except in exceptional circumstances.) Make HER set her curfew each and every time she goes out. It is just normal common courtesy to tell the people you live or work with where you are going, how you can be reached and what time you will return. Part of being an adult. So, let her say when she will be home, with the understanding that she has to give you an exact address/phone number/itinerary and be home within 5 minutes of the time that she stated (unless she is in the ER.) Make sure she knows that periodically you might check and there will be hell to pay if she isn't where she says she will be, with the people she said she would be with. Walk in at minute number 6 late without a phone call and you are grounded 1 day for every minute you are late.

You might also explain that her eventual access to the family automobile is highly dependent on her performance @ the rules. Muck up and you might not drive till you are old. By the time she actually can drive, this will pretty much be a habit she will follow.

One other thing -

13 year old girls are extremely hormonal. Think PMS. Try to keep her away from artificial flavors, colors and sugar (honey & maple are fine) as much as you can. Those things seem to make already bad matters worse.

211 BabbaZee  Sun, May 11, 2008 5:49:08am

Fox just did a piece om McCain/Fiengold, the part about legislators not jumping on corporate jets.
There is an exclusion for family member aircraft, you know like if your wife owns the Budweiser Distributorship that owns the jet.

Why is this bad news? It would be ludicrous to expect that John McCain or Jon Carry, who is married to the Heinz 57 heiress, (or any of the rest) not fly in the spouse's jet. That is hardly the same as accepting gifts (read bribes) from corporations that are totally unconnected to the legislator in question.

I managed most of that with mine. See Granny's 20 Questions - works wonders for hooker clothes. I did not hear I hate you very often. And I was smart enough to keep my mouth shut about boys I did not especially approve of. Teens that sense you are trying to pick their boyfriend/girlfriend for them will cling even more strongly to the boy in question that even all us Typical White People do to our guns and religion. Boyfriend disapproval is almost guaranteed to cause problems. Hide it well.

Recent congressional hearings about the destruction, by Israel's air force, of a Syrian-North Korean nuclear facility, has shed light on the mutually-beneficial nature of US-Israel relations. The September 2007 Israeli military operation in Syria has dealt a setback to the Syria-North Korea-Iran-Hezbollah axis, while advancing US and Israeli interests. It has bolstered US posture of deterrence, has extended US' strategic arm and has provided the US with vital information to penetrate Russian air defense systems, which are also employed by Iran. It has refuted the claim that US-Israel relations have been shaped by political expediency.

Former Secretary of State and NATO Supreme Commander, General (ret.) Al Haig refers to Israel as the largest, cost-effective, combat-experienced US aircraft carrier that does not require US personnel, cannot be sunk and is located in a most critical region for US national security interests.

Ok, but it reeks of hypocrisy and will be used in the Fall.
We could parse it until the last dog dies, but at the end of the day he will look like a hypocrite.

That does not reek of hypocrisy in the least. Expecting that our Congress people not avail themselves of jets belonging to their immediate family members is ridiculous - and pretty hypocritical. Nit picking just to find something bad.

John McCain is certainly not the only Congress person whose spouse has this kind of high end transportation. There is at the very least Jon Carry, married to Therese Heinz, heiress to the Heinz 57 fortune. And others too, I am sure, since you have to be pretty high-end income wise to make it into the US Congress.

A Vietnamese man in Norway lost around 35,000 dollars after he was led to believe that mixing the cash with a special liquid would double its value, Norwegian media reported Saturday.

A 32-year-old Frenchman is set to stand trial in a lower court near Oslo next week on charges that he cheated a gullible Vietnamese man out of 180,000 kroner (35,00 dollars, 23,000 euros) earlier this year, local daily Romerikes Blad (RB) reported on its website.

The victim of the con, who was not identified, was reportedly told by the Frenchman to leave a mixture of real cash with blank bills to marinate in a special liquid overnight, and the next morning he would have double the amount of cash at his disposal.

But when he showed up the next morning to collect his prize, both the cash and the suspected con-artist, whose name was not revealed, had disappeared.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. I'm busy working on a major roundup of the situation in Lebanon, but for now, this will have to whet the appetite for the kind of items I'll be including.

Obama would negotiate with Hizbullah.

Hezbollah's power grab in Beirut has once more plunged that city into violence and chaos. This effort to undermine Lebanon's elected government needs to stop, and all those who have influence with Hezbollah must press them to stand down immediately. It's time to engage in diplomatic efforts to help build a new Lebanese consensus that focuses on electoral reform, an end to the current corrupt patronage system, and the development of the economy that provides for a fair distribution of services, opportunities and employment. We must support the implementation of UN Security Council Resolutions that reinforce Lebanon's sovereignty, especially resolution 1701 banning the provision of arms to Hezbollah, which is violated by Iran and Syria. As we push for this national consensus, we should continue to support the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Siniora, strengthen the Lebanese army, and insist on the disarming of Hezbollah before it drags Lebanon into another unnecessary war. As we do this, it is vital that the United States continues to work with the international community and the private sector to rebuild Lebanon and get its economy back on its feet.

Obama really doesn't get this. He's clearly saying that we need to negotiate with Hizbullah in order to obtain consensus. The patronage system is one that is due to the corrosive effects of Syrian influence. The UN SCR 1701 has not been implemented because the UN refuses to adhere to the terms, the Lebanese military will not disarm Hizbullah because it is thoroughly coopted by Hizbullah, and Hizbullah's intentions are all too clear. Talk of rebuilding before you've displaced Hizbullah is far too premature because war is inevitable. That's in Hizbullah's DNA.

I am actually old enough to remember when prayer was stopped in schools - being from So Cal it was even then described as just "a moment of silence" after the pledge of allegience. There was a hot debate and I remember even the teachers looking pained and pinched on the day the Principal came round to class to announce it individually. Parents weren't notified (at least not in our school) until afterwards.... that was a hell of a PTA meeting.

Spengler's been getting into the evolution of the document known as the Koran.

"...The whole period after 1945 was poisoned by the Nazis," says Gunter Luling, a scholar who was drummed out of his university in the 1970s after he put forward heterodox theories about the Koran's origins. His doctoral thesis argued that the Koran was lifted in part from Christian hymns.

If the Democrats had a field day with this particular issue and the Republican talking head wasn't smart enough to bring up John Carry, then the Republican Party needs a new talking head pronto.

This is a complete non-starter. Mud slinging. BTW - I am an Independent, one who has been fighting for transparency in government for 40 years or so.

I know. I can appreciate that. It's hard when someone hates you. I had a coworker who developed a strong hate for me because I held her to standards. One was enough, thank you very much.

Now: am I able to go to church today or not? I can't decide.

I am accustomed to being "hated", my mother was the first and the worst. Obviously I needed this skill, thank you Mom and happy mothers day to you wherever you are.

If you can get over that, no extraneous hater or pile of haters can make a dent, believe me.

It's just annoying, like a mosquito buzzing in your ear.

sand so white sea so blue no mortal place at all..... (weeeeping like a fool) how many moons how many junes (indeed)

AMAZING song.

"All hands on deck! We've run afloat!"
I heard the captain cry
"Explore the ship! Replace the cook!
Let no one leave alive!"
Across the straits, around the horn
How far can sailors fly?
A twisted path, our tortured course
And no one left alive

We sailed for parts unknown to man
Where ships come home to die
No lofty peak, nor fortress bold
Could match our captain's eye
Upon the seventh sea-sick day
We made our port of call
A sand so white, and sea so blue
No mortal place at all

We fired the guns and burned the mast
And rowed from ship to shore
The captain cried, we sailors wept
Our tears were tears of joy
Now many moons and many Junes
Have passed since we made land
Salty Dog, the seaman's log
Your witness in my own hand

Fuck you, Arnold.

No, they are not going to burn the books. Just remove them from circulation. Something to keep in mind, because this influences even kids who attend private schools or homeschool:

California and Texas are the two biggest purchasers of textbooks at the K-12 level in the world. California alone purchasers more textbooks that several smaller states combined. Thus, virtually all new textbooks are written to conform with California standards and curriculum requirements.

As goes California, so goes the nation. At least when it comes to school textbooks.

Despite the care that I use in purchasing books, I already have a small shelf of books that I will not use and will not resell. Every year I add one or two more. And every year I find myself going farther back in time in order to purchase books that give a balanced presentation without promoting an agenda.

I'm not surprised that schools are incorporating the realities of diverse families (when my mother was teaching DOD Pre-K one of the items in her lesson plan was to have each child make a or draw a picture of their "family".... it was facinating to her a High School grad of 1944 and interesting also to me to see that very few had a mother, a father, and perhaps siblings). Some had blended families (mother, father, step mother/father or both, siblings and half siblings), some had single parent, some were same sex. I was facinated. She incorporated these each year into a "book" and the class would share and discuss them as a way to promote tolerance of diversity.

But I am flabbergasted that children of very young age are perhaps now being allowed to identify gender preference and that this is being enacted to law in our public schools.

It's a matter of time. The situation in Lebanon is still developing, but it's a matter of time before the violence spills over and affects Israel directly and violently. The failure to stop Hizbullah in the August war, the UN resolutions, and the Lebanese political failures to deal with the militias are all coming to a head - and it spells bad news for everyone.

And then, we get Obama weighing in with what he counsels on all such matters - negotiate with terrorists. Lovely.

That's the presumptive nominee for the Democrats? Democrats have decided that we must negotiate with terrorists who have succeeded in engaging in a coup d'etat against a sovereign government? That's a policy for collective suicide.

Even if all the kafirs got together...
They still couldn’t stop this Ummah!
We love Islam More than we love life

No more kufur system to be run
All of these belong to one land
Part of once mighty Islamic span
More than 52 nations we fall
One nation strong we stand tall
Waiting for the Ummah’s call
Once again and for all
Reestablish Islam to rule all

over a billion
But oh so weak
We need to rise up
And get back on our feet
We’ve been fooled too long
This what happens
When we let kafirs lead

The giant is in a slumber
Islam is complete
yet the Ummah looks up
to democracy for its needs
Defeated mentality
Left us in a gutter
The giant used to
Take care of the world
Now asks the kafirs to usher
Remember the battle of Bader [sic]
They doubted us from the start
Muslims had Islam
In their minds and their hearts
They know they fear us
Injecting poisons venom
so they tear us a part
This is just a reminder
Take it straight to the heart
Let us get back in the lead
Shake the giant to wake
Flourish and rejuvenate
Implement only Islam
to revive and renovate

My neck of the woods was pretty hot campaigning territory a couple of weeks ago. Had the Clinton's to the north and the Obama's to the south. A mile or two in either direction. A woman of color with the same 60's hairdo as Michelle, as tall as Michelle, on the same day that Michelle was in town nearly ran me down in the parking lot of the local grocery store.

I attended DOD schools Iin early-mid 60s.....I don't recall any pre-K....the families were a reflection of American culture of the time.

re: #394 Roger

Washington D.C. is all up in arms over baseball players juicing up but see no problem with one of theirs juiced beyond reason.

One standard for them, another for the rest of us.
Haven't they other things more important to attend? What are we paying them for? Why are we paying them? (Why do we keep hiring and re-hiring these guys?)
Rhetorical questions all.
Ah, well, I'm about all out of patience chewing gum!

Glad that the body is in great shape, though. Hope you're taking today off - just for some R&R if nothing else.
