Poem from my son Hayden, age 9:

My Mother

Beautiful and sweet like roses.
Fun and friendly,
That's some joy,
I depend on her like a hero,
She is the most important person to me,
Her beautiful blonde hair is like a lion's mane.

Hayden

I am lucky enough to still have a mom, a MIL (yes! We're close!), and be a mom. This is a special day for me.

But I never forget the moms like those Hayseed (#20) references. The moms of the troops who have died. The moms who are struggling with their children through deadly disease. The ones who have lost their kids to abduction or abuse.

I'm so thankful for what I have and what I haven't lost. Prayers for the moms who might look upon this day with pain or bitterness. May they find peace.

Death of a Nation

The last few days have been a brutal lesson in the limits of soft power. The overthrow of the legitimate government of Lebanon, coupled with Iran's refusal to negotiate on its nuclear program conclusively demonstrate the price of appeasing totalitarian dictators. The best way to communicate with such peopeople, is to shove a gun in their face.

The Iranians and Syrians bought off the leadership of the Lebanese Armed Forces; the elected government of Lebanon were operating in a vacuum and did not even know it. The failure of the United States and Western powers not to stand by a sister democracy is a shameful abdication of our moral responsibility to the international community.

Having just elected themselves masters of Lebanon at gunpoint, Iran and Syria will impose their will into every corner of the country. They can drive away the Christians and Druze people in a matter of weeks. Within a few months, they can alter the demographic picture of Lebanon sufficiently claim political majority over the nation. If people don't show up to vote, even though under threat to one's very life, you get the last and only election necessary to determine Lebanon's future forever.

Give the Hezbollah credit for very quick bold actions to create an entire new reality in the Middle East. Even the Israelis were caught flat-footed and they pride themselves on knowing what is going on. We are witnessing the birth of the new rogue nation. The idea of Hezbollah sitting as a equal nation in the General assembly of the United Nations ought to sicken anyone who loves freedom and truth as foundational principles of human poltiical organization even more than the current liars, crooks and ne,er do wells.

Absent drastic measures, Hezbollah will consolidate control and become what even Al Qaeda never had in Afghanistan prior to 2001: a terror organization with its own state. Osama had to pay to stay and ask permission, Hezbollah has carte blache.

The only thing the US and the West can do is issue an ultimatum demanding an immediate return to the previous status quo in Lebanon and the unconditional implementation of UNSC 1559 and 1701. The first resolution required Syria to get out of Lebanon and the second called for banning shipments of weaponry to anyone other than the legitimate government of Lebanon. Both of these resolutions have been brazenly breached by Iran and Syria through their proxy, Hezbollah. The demand should have short time table and the threat of force behind it.

The takeover of Lebanon is a slap in the face of the international community by Iran and Syria. Endless entreaties for them to conform to international norms, much less give up their nuclear weapons program, not just fell on deaf ears, but were seen as weakness inviting attack. These animals went right for freedom's throat. You will not see a multicultural parliamentary democracy come out of this week's events: no, the Lebanese are now subjects of an Islamist police state. Freedom in Lebanon is dead.

From Israel's perspective, the prospect of a Hezbollah government in Lebanon is far worse a headache than the Hamas disaster in Gaza. Unlike the small and easy to cut off territory of Gaza, Lebanon is a large country with many ports and, heaven help us all, an international Airport. Beginning immediately, there are no controls whatsoever on what can and will be brought in to Lebanon by Hezbollah and its sponsors. Given Hezbollah's control of Lebanon entails unacceptable risk to Israel's national security.

A democratic nation died in a matter of hours. It's death was nothing less an act of war. It's death is certain to lead to yet a bigger war. If you ever wondered what would happen if a group of criminal barbarian, terrorists an psychopaths ever seized control over an entire country, you're about to find out.

You realize that if you haven't talked with your mom yet today, she's either periodically looking over at the phone or standing with her hands on her hips while tapping the floor with one foot.

Stop reading this and go call her. It just takes a couple minutes. You don't have to say anything. She will do all the talking. After you say goodbye, she will immediately call her friends and sisters and tell them what a great kid you are (the veracity of which is irrelevant). Do it for your mom. That's when I was in Vietnam. Got there January 10th 5 days after my 18th birthday. Went in at 17.

Thanks. I had a hunch it had to do with Vietnam.

I was Navy, '62-'66, Tonkin Gulf.

Dad was Old Corps, joined in '39, retired in '65.

Go Navy, I love you guys.

I wanted to learn a trade in the service. Dad, who received one of the first 50 (meritorious) promotions to E-8 when they created it, told me not to join the Corps. Said if I had a degree in medicine and they needed cooks this week, I'd be made a cook.

A guy I went to high school with was the top kick at the Beruit barracks. I think about that, and my choice of service, at times.

re: #71 Pvt Bin Jammin

Happy Mother's Day to you! I have been in a funk...a friend since we were 11 (nearly 60 years) and her husband came over for a week from London, and stayed with their daughter, who has been assigned here by her bank, and they came here Wed. afternoon, and we were remembering so many things..we are like family, and when they left that night, my husband drove them to the local train station...I sat here weeping, as I realize that it is probably the last time we will see each other. Their daughter called earlier to wish me a happy Mother's Day, and when I told her? Her Mum was weeping on the train. Our kids are very close in age, and are all friend. Her Mum called us her twins seperated by an ocean at birth...we are 3 weeks apart in age.

The daughter will be here next Sunday for our belated double birthday party for NY Grampa and the now 8 year old granddaughter, and Mother's Day.

Feel better! We did not pick the right time to be sick, did we?

Without the family here, it is a very bittersweet day...

It's kinda funny, the things you remember on Mother's Day. As I was making breakfast for my guests this morning, enveloped with the delicious and savory smells of eggy casseroles and crisp bacon and sweet cinnamon bread, I suddenly flashed back to one Mother's Day morning when I strove mightily to provide breakfast in bed for my own mom. Let me tell you, the smells (and the sights) were very different then! Looking back, I wonder how my mother could smile and thank me and actually even eat some of that ick-on-a-plate, all the while knowing she would have to clean up at least some of the mess I had made in my efforts. She was always compassionate enough to be effusive in her compliments and sneaky about disposal.

Happy Mother's Day to all the good mothers of the world!

Oh, and here's a poem I spotted in the happiest place on Earth (St. John's NL)

Me Mudder

When me prayers were poorly said,
Who tucked me in my little bed,
And spanked my ass till it was red?
Me Mudder.

Who took me from me cozy cot,
And put me on an ice cold pot,
And made me pee if I could not?
Me Mudder.

And when the morning light would come,
And in me crib I'd dribbled some,
Who wiped my tiny little bum?
Me Mudder.

Who would my hair so gently part,
And hug me gently to her heart,
And sometimes squeeze me till I'd fart?
Me Mudder.

Who looked at me with eyebrows knit,
And nearly had a king sized fit,
When in my Sunday clothes I sh*t?
Me Mudder.

And when at night the bed did sqeak,
I raised me head to have a peek,
Who yelled at me to go to sleep?
Me Fadder.

Since I can't travel any more, I can only hope they will come here again. Originally they were going to, but with the cost of flying? They flew mid week, and the cost shocked me...my last trip over, 7 years ago, was $198 return, without the added taxes...now? They spent over $700 return, with a lot more taxes, and flew mid week .

If their daughter stays here for 2 years, then they will be over again, hopefully.

So help me...on the phone with daughter in between posts...and she won't stop laughing at my croak voice! We are just so glad that she and the toddling toddler didn't catch it!

Thank you for sending me to search out who he is....having heard the name, but utterly unfamiliar with the man heretofore..... :)

Born Børge Rosenbaum in Copenhagen, Denmark, into a Jewish family...

Borge started touring extensively in Europe, where he began telling anti-Nazi jokes. This led to Adolf Hitler placing the outspoken Jew on his list of enemies to the Fatherland.

When the Nazis occupied Denmark during World War II, Borge was playing a concert in Sweden, and managed to escape to Finland. He traveled to America on the USS American Legion, the last passenger ship that made it out of Europe prior to the war, and arrived August 28, 1940 with only 20 dollars, three of which went to the customs fee. Disguised as a sailor, Borge returned to Denmark once during the occupation to visit his dying mother...

Even though Borge didn't speak a word of English upon arrival, he quickly managed to adapt his jokes to the American audience, learning English by watching movies...

That is the classic Borge bit. I got to see Victor a couple times. He carried those old chevy seat belts around with him. He was so damn funny! He could do 20 minutes of improv about a piece of music, and never even play the music.

She is also a hero, as are so many wives...and she is a Patriot! G-d bless her, and all the other wives and husbands of our troops...the unsung heroes.

I'm not sure whether to say go get him, or what. your post seemed to imply a joke gift, at any rate happy mothers day.

With all that I have seen over the years? He was my favorite...he was the gift that kept on giving!

I saw Danny Kaye as a teen, with my parents zt"l, also in Boston, and we had third row orchestra seats. After the show, he sat on the apron of the stage, and asked if anyone had a cigarette... I did, and threw him the pack. He took a few, and threw it back. That was about in the 1950's! Yes, I stopped smoking cold turkey, when my first born was a month old...but will never forget that. Not a clue as to what I did with the pack! ;)

Boston was a great city to grow up in; try outs pre-Broadway. My parents took me to so many things...and now my 8 year old granddaughter gets the same, but in NY. My DIL is in PR!

/I plan to record my incredibly spot on Kermit voice on the answering machine for posterity! ;)

Seriously, when 2 little granddaughters, one on LI, and the other in NJ, call me 'Grampa' when I answered the phone? I am still ROTF! But it is a bummer not to have everyone here today.

Thanks for the kind wishes.

"Be good to your mother. You only get one."

How old-fashioned.

What about birth mothers, adoptive mothers, egg donor mothers, surrogate mothers, etc.

The brave new world of maternity is a bubbling cauldron of new types of Moms.

Kids in the future will go broke sending GM flowers to them all.

Cheers! I really have to go back to St John's and buy another one. It was a cheesy little thing hung from a stick on a string that I found between a plastic puffin and some Jimmy Flynn CDs. You know, regular tourist crap....but I turned my back on it in the bar or the mess, and it was gone. Of course, it lives on in my heart.

Don't get discouraged!
The day my Mom died from Alzheimer's, I literally felt her hand on my heart that night. I wasn't with her when she died,
but I don't remember her as being sick.
I remember her as Mom now.
It brings me great thankfulness.
We still laugh about the stuff Mom did when she was ill,
she was a wild woman, kinda like me.

The one was bad enough, thanks. Fortunately, she won't be around much longer.

it's way late in the scheme of things, but could i get a different one?

Nowadays you can have two daddies and one be a mommy. Who would have thunk it.

Ergh. Everybody's had their fun making all sort of snarky comments, and I can't sneak one in.

Oh well, even if I'm late to the party, hope you all had a good time with your mothers. Well, whatever that means to you. Mine, we went over to my sister-in-law's place and had pasta, since she's a new mother and she loves it.
