The law isn’t justice. It’s a very imperfect mechanism. If you press exactly the right buttons and are also lucky, justice may show up in the answer. A mechanism is all the law was ever intended to be.

It isn't that we have good laws or bad laws, it is that they don't seem to be static. The law and its interpretation change from judge to judge, from jury to jury. One company will win a frivolous lawsuit, when the next will lose one, even when by the law they should not have lost. It is as if the machine doles out a different answer every time, even when the same buttons are pushed.

The law is what ever the judge decides the law is...

A Mason County District Court judge raised concerns over ICE officers appearing outside her courtroom two recent weeks in a row looking for defendants.

In a posting on an electronic mailing list for municipal and district court judges, Judge Victoria Meadows said ICE officers have searched her foreign-language calendar and asked her Spanish interpreter to identify a defendant who was to appear before her. The interpreter declined.

Meadows said she worries officers' presence around and outside her courtroom could deter some defendants from showing up. "I have a very good appearance record ... ," Meadows said. "I don't want to interfere with ICE's work. But we also don't want them interfering with the court process."

Because they believe that everyone can be made better all at once, just find the right leader, and the promised land is just around the corner.

It's a failure of perspective, really. Every single human being - on his or her own - can change and improve their behavior. But people in the mass...not so much.

re: #38 Ma Sands

The peoplo in the pictures are Olim. This means they are immigrating to Israel to live, presumably, for the rest of their lives. In Israel they call this return/immigration to Israel of Jews "making 'alliyah'". Aliyah literally means "to go up". The theory being that Jews are ascending to our biblical place, and returning up to the Land G-d promised to us. (give or take meaning). When a Jew get to Israel, he/she is not greated with "Welcome to Israel", or "Enjoy your stay" but the more appropriate, "Welcome home".

Alliyah has steadily been taking place in Israel since before its acceptance as a UN recognized "formal" country on May 14, 1948. I do not have any actual stats to share with you (nor the time right now to find them, sorry!), but you can probably get all the info about making Aliyah from the sites below.

There are many wonderful organization that participate in this "gathering of the exciles" from "gulus" (diaspora / outside of Israel). One of which is called Nefesh B'Nefesh, and another The Jewish Agency For Israel.

-a wonderful, touching video re: one such Aliyah!

re: #51 Ma Sands

That's what I had thought......are the photos Wrath linked to, a new, large, permanent in-flow, then?

There has always been an in-flow, but often it is nothing more than a trickle. There have been some major Aliyahs. During the Presidency of President Bush 1, almost 30,000 Ethiopion Jews were flown to Israel in one weekend. Israel took every available plane in it's inventory, including riping the seats out of some of it's commercial planes to accomplish that. And President Bush also sent American planes and logistic help. But the more ordinary Aliyah is a couple of hundred here and there.

I was somewhat teetering on John McCain's nomination. I would have voted for him, but I was doubting my defense of him. Until I read this article by P.J. O'Rourke in the Weekly Standard. This excerpt, I think, is reason enough for me to support, defend, and even contribute to John McCain's candidacy.

Some people say John McCain isn't conservative enough. But there's more to conservatism than low taxes, Jesus, and waterboarding at Gitmo. Conservatism is also a matter of honor, duty, valor, patriotism, self-discipline, responsibility, good order, respect for our national institutions, reverence for the traditions of civilization, and adherence to the political honesty upon which all principles of democracy are based. Given what screw-ups we humans are in these respects, conservatism is also a matter of sense of humor. Heard any good quips lately from Hillary or Barack?

I don't remember the ratio, but if you compare the number of Ethiopian Jews that Israel has rescued over the years to a country the size of the USA., the numbers run into the multi millions. Seems I haven't heard the Rev Wright talk about that. Wonder if Obama even know about Operation Solomon?

Confusing ballot designs still plague elections

"The sad fact is, we still have not systematically addressed the need for good ballot design standards," said Lawrence Norden of the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University's law school. "We've spent billions of dollars on overhauling election administration in this country, but we're still seeing the same ballot design mistakes in almost every federal election."

Yes and we should point out to those who might be aware of the astronomical cost to Israel of having to house, educate, modernize, and care for such a large group of peoples. And Israel did this knowing full well their responsibilities if they were brought to Israel. Israel did many thing both right and wrong concerning the Ethiopians. So how do they intend to fund it? They're gonna take it from the CAP budget (Common Agricultural Policy).

The CAP is currently 45% of the EU budget. It provides subsidies to approx 5% of the population and produces 3% of the output.

The next time you hear someone bitching about U.S. ag subsidies, give them the EU figures and then the U.S. figures. Ours are less than 1% of our budget. And 90% of the farm bill currently under discussion is for conservation, nutrition, etc.

I'd 1st cause tension between Iran and a neighboring terrorist group or non-nation state (the Kurds for example), then I'd opt for an undercover action which would eliminate Ach, his cabinet, the Mullahs, and the scientists (maybe a car bomb, or precision hit, etc.). While many sects do appear to have Jewish antecedant , an examination of ritual shows that most are a Christian sects.

The Falashas were, I thought, a Jewish sect.
So were the Christians.

I would say that the Duke Lacroose team should stay away from her.
She may not be a ho yet, but she has her training wheels on.

On one hand, I feel bad for the girl--somehow, things are spiraling badly out of control for her very early.
But on the other hand, she knew she was taking a big risk, and wanted to get a rise (!) out of everybody--but then plays stupid to the cameras. This is trashy chick 101.
I hope she turns around. Soon.

Why Bomb Iran? Must we make the same mistakes we did with Iraq?

I'd 1st cause tension between Iran and a neighboring terrorist group or non-nation state (the Kurds for example), then I'd opt for an undercover action which would eliminate Ach, his cabinet, the Mullahs, and the scientists (maybe a car bomb, or precision hit, etc.). Thereafter, there would be a Chernobyl type event.

America would thereafter and for eternity deny any involvement.

Bombing is not the same as invading.

The yutes don't support the regime.

I think comparing Iraqis and Iranians is like comparing apples and oranges.

And we wouldn't occupy Iran.

Iran and Iraq fought to a 10 year stand still.

Wouldn't be difficult.

Occupation would be.

Define "responsible"...I know not these strange words.

Evidently, neither do the girl's parents/guardians.

I still vote for covert action against the "leaders", and blaming it on Syria. (proxy war over Lebanon maybe?)

Well, that's accurate.

A women spends her whole married life trying to change you.

After 16 years she says, "Your not the man I married!"

Go figure.

I pulled the old switcheroo on her and she didn’t even know it.

Of course it was all by accident.

He's standing up for his wife, a bit, I think (Janice?). She's black.

Sorry, no he's not. He's setting up a very ugly straw man and then courageously knocking it down. He's shitting all over the Republican party to feed his apparent media addiction. Republicans should be furious with the implications of what this chucklehead has said--Democrats are stroking their hairless chins and nodding sagely--"Gee, he's not so bad for a Republican".
Media whore.

Well, we could use some prayers for our dog (Jack Russell terrier). June's taking her to the vet, as she's been throwing up blood today. She likes to chew up plastic stuff, so who knows what's going on.

I hope your dear pet is OK.

re: #175 buzzsawmonkey

It's all due to global warming. The world is getting warmer, therefore expanding; therefore, it costs more to deliver the mail.

After what our postman did on Saturday, I'm wondering if some of the carriers aren't experiencing heat stroke.

Ok, we live in a town outside Nashville, TN. We got the mail Saturday - two letters and a folded flier - and none are stuck together. Mailed to our house.

One letter was from Western Express, with "Pay to recipient..." and the name was shown clear in the plastic window. It was addressed to a loan company - with a P.O. Box! - in San Antonio, TX. Our zip starts with 3 - the starting zip on this one was 7.

I wonder if we just look, to outside folks, like the post office box of a college loan service...

re: #171 haakondahl

I just caught former SECDEF Cohen giving an absolutley awful lecture on CNN's Situation Room.
"It would be a bad idea for my party, the Republican party, to try to 'Willie Horton-ize" the race by suggesting that Barak Obama is unqualified to be President because he is black, or because Our enemies have nice things to say about him, that he supports their goals. We must be better than that, etc".

1) Willie Horton wasn't about race. The dems say it was, but that doesn't make it so. It was about being soft on crime. The dems broke out their ol' mind-reading hats and decided that The People are racists who were more scared of Willie because of his color than the fact that he was, you know, a frigging murderer.

2) I haven't heard anyone in the GOP say Obama is unqualified because he is black. I have heard others say he is QUALIFIED because he is black, and those folks aren't in my party.

3) It is dishonest to throw the last idea in there with the first. The equates a fair criticism, that people like Hamas and FARC support Obama, with the unfair criticism, that his race makes him unqualified. Purposefully equates them, no doubt. Now, you're not only "racist" if you don't think Obama is qualified, you are racist if you are bothered that clear enemies of the United States support Obama.

Oooh - the first one was the best political thriller I've ever read. Made Clancy seem boringly obsessed with minutiae. I've read through the 4th one.

But you sure gotta carve out a couple days with no interruptions before you start that first page, doncha?

Hey now. Personally, I have no desire to change my husband -- I love him just as he is. It would be nice, tho, for him to keep his smartass comments to himself once in a while and oh, not fart as much.

I started reading it and had to immediately find a map of DC, just so I could follow the characters' movements. When Mitch was creeping through the White House, I got online and tried to find a map of it, but there's not any with details of the Residence. I drew my own, based on Mitch's movements.

I think that was a caffeine OD day....

Raymond Chandler also noted:

"How strange it is that man's finest aspirations... his finest actions also, his greatest and unselfish heroism, his constant daily courage in a harsh world- how strange that these things should be so much finer than his fate on earth... Don't tell me honor is merely a chemical reaction or that a man who deliberately gives his life for another is merely following a behavior pattern.."

A late bloomer, in the writing game, but a brilliant flowering.
