State Department Outreach to Terror Groups

Mon, May 12, 2008 at 9:57:56 pm PDT

Here’s one of those stories that might make you think you’re having a waking nightmare: State Department’s Jihadist Exchange Program.

State Department diplomats are taking full advantage of their new rules prohibiting the use of “jihad,” “jihadist,” and “mujahedeen” to describe Islamic extremists and terrorists, which they apparently have taken to mean that there are no jihadists in light of the exchange programs they have recently sponsored for the International Institute for Islamic Thought (IIIT) — an organization currently under active federal grand jury investigation for terrorist support activities. [HT: Global MB Daily Report]

The IIIT exchange programs have been conducted under the State Department’s International Visitor’s Program. According to reports published on IIIT’s website, the State Department sponsored a March 7 visit to IIIT by a group of Chinese scholars and, more recently, an April 17-18 session with a large delegation of Islamic scholars from the Philippines, Thailand, and Indonesia.

The State Department has sponsored these IIIT activities at the very same time that a federal grand jury continues to look into IIIT’s multiple ties to terrorism as part of the Department of Justice’s ongoing Operation Green Quest investigation. A March 24 article in the New York Sun, “A Court Sheds New Light on Terror Probe,” identifies IIIT as the “group at the center of the probe.”

Is this the State Department of the United States, of the Al-Qaeda State Department? because they're certainly acting like the latter.

It's almost as if the State Department wants to be friends with everyone but the American people.

If the State Department was a doctor, this how they would treat you:

"Well, I'm happy to report that you're healthy as a horse!"

"Really? How can that be? Just yesterday the other doctor told me I had a life-threatening brain tumor. How did you cure it?"

"Simple. I just changed its name from 'tumor' to 'Happy Head Friend' and voila -- you no longer have a tumor!"

Kind of seems like a no-brainer. Don't allow exchange students through an organization suspected of terrorist ties. But obviously I'm giving the State Department too much credit in assuming they have brains.

12 really grumpy big dog Johnson  Mon, May 12, 2008 10:05:10pm

Was this Condi's idea?

{probably}

13 Irenike  Mon, May 12, 2008 10:05:22pm

The only good spin on this is if they are using the IIIT as a lure to get the dope on these motherf-ers, which will later lead to arrest and/or execution of terrorists.

But wait. This is the State Department we're talking about. No chance that they'd be actually working to eliminate terrorists. That would be so un-politically correct.

What I don't understand is how the the president and the State Department seem to be saying completely different things. Bush is saying that we will fight terrorist no matter where they hid while State is basically kissing terrorist butt. Isn't State's job to follow the directions of the President? Is anybody in this government actually serious about fighting this war, or is it all just BS?

State Dept quislings outreach to terrorist Jihadis - while the Navy positions its ships.

May 7. Fleet Response Plan was designed to insure the Navy has 6 aircraft carriers available within 30 days to anywhere in the world, with 2 more available by 90 days. The theory is that beyond 90 days, the other 2 carriers not conducting a nuclear refueling would be available within 180 days. 6+2 is theory though, it usually involves several of those 6 carriers returning from deployment, thus the 30 day metric.

6 & 30 Days:
USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) - Deployed to Gulf
USS George Washington (CVN 73) - Deployed on way to Japan
USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) - Next Atlantic Fleet Carrier to Deploy
USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) - Next Pacific Fleet Carrier to Deploy
USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) - Surge Atlantic Carrier Behind Roosevelt
USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) - Surge Pacific Carrier Behind Reagan

2 & 90 Days:
USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) - Rotating from Japan to San Diego (Currently Deployed)
USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) - Currently Deployed, Returning Home

2 & 180 Days:
USS Enterprise (CVN 65) - 16-month Extended Docking Availability Began April 11th
USS Nimitz (CVN 68) - Currently Deployed, Extended Drydock Availability Begins After Deployment

Nuclear Refueling:
USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) - Unavailable until end of 2008

Check closely, we list both carriers for 60 days as deployed today, plus a 180 day carrier as deployed today. In other words, they won't be unavailable until the Navy decides them to be.

How clever, with the stroke of a pen, State eliminates the terms jihadist, radical islamist, mujahadeen, or islamofascists. Thus, by definition, they don't exist. By further extension, since they don't exist, any islamic adherent is acceptable for admission to the US, after all there aren't any jihadists, mujahadeen, or islamofascists, so it's all good, right?

We are so screwed

43 realwest  Mon, May 12, 2008 10:24:51pm

re: #27 paradox42 You're not the only person who's asked that question!
I thought President Bush, immediately post 9/11, was as strong on the War on Terror as any president I could hope for. That thinking continued through Afghanistan.
It started to fade some with Iraq - I understood and still understand, how much a functioning Islamic Democracy in Iraq could mean. But during the run up to the Iraqi War, I was much more in favor of Iran, not Iraq; there were just too many connections - or dots worth connecting - to the danger Iran posed to us in the GWoT, plus I still think we're at war with Iran since the 1979 invasion and take over of the US Embassy - and the holding hostage of the Embassy workers. However, Carter, Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush II didn't agree with me and into Iraq we went. Had we just stopped with effecting "regime change" AND then took care of Iran, I think that would have been more productive.
And then Republicans stayed home in droves in 2006 and I sincerely believe that President Bush's GWOT suffered enormously because of that and his resulting drop in public popularity.
All of which leads me to state that I don't think that anyone , outside of the Military, is truly fighting the WoT.

First deny that Muslims are evil savages who want to destroy your country and make you a slave (with the big TV going to the local Muslim headman), then kill your dog, give up pork, cover your wife in a veil, offer your daughter for sex, your son for castration and slavery, and live in fear. The governments of the West have decided that the problem is a "small, minority" of Islam, and they are determined to stick to that view no matter what. If the old definitions of "jihadist supporter" or "terrorist enabler" include more than handful of Muslims, they will change the definitions until the number of the enemy is comfortably small once again. To them, the truth is less important than the process, and the process needs the total amount of Islamofascists to remain in the low single digits... hence the constant redefinition of terms.

True, sadly. I wish that State could be eliminated as a cabinet presence, also, but it would put our country at a distinct disadvantage with the rest of the world. I cannot see the UK, for example, doing away with it's equally toxic Foreign Office. I truly believe that with John Bolton as Sec. of State, there would be a clean-out of State unlike any in our history, and he would rebuild it to something we could be proud of, if McCain would allow it.

Otherwise? Business as usual, which, IMHO, would be fatal, G-d forbid.

I have said this before, but, this thin veneer that we call a Nation can vanish overnight, practically. Given enough dedicated enemies, within and without, with enough perfidy and sabotage, one little tip, and over we go. We are well along the way of this path right now. Foreign interests control our policies and maybe even our destiny in ways that we dare not imagine.

This thread is evidence of that.

And on that happy note, I'm to bed.

Otherwise? Business as usual, which, IMHO, would be fatal, G-d forbid.

re: #76 stevieray

The governments of the West have decided that the problem is a "small, minority" of Islam, and they are determined to stick to that view no matter what. If the old definitions of "jihadist supporter" or "terrorist enabler" include more than handful of Muslims, they will change the definitions until the number of the enemy is comfortably small once again. To them, the truth is less important than the process, and the process needs the total amount of Islamofascists to remain in the low single digits... hence the constant redefinition of terms.

We could blame it on Daniel Pipes, but it's not like he's been puffing the State tobacky. He's adapted his work to changing reality. The State robotrons are still waiting for JFK to wake up and pull the trigger one more time on the "russian roulette" of international diplomacy.

If only a "small minority", say 1%, are out to kill us, that's about 10 million people. And its likely that the potential number of Jihadi's is more than 1%.

Sleep tight...

Yep... it's likely a much bigger number. But the leaders of the West have decided that we're gonna live in an integrated world, and the fact that a huge number of Muslims are unable to tolerate anything except total surrender to the Koran doesn't fit their plans. So the governments lie, and they pretend they can finesse the problems away.

If they can't..? Too bad. Its only our freedoms that disappear, while the power of the government grows [necessary to deal with the eternal seething]. It is in every way a betrayal of the people for the benefit of the state.

It's simple Nana. We just create a new service called The Bureau of Essential Affairs. Then we vet the hell out of everybody at State, and the few with dignity migrate over. Eventually, we swap names and name a new Secretary, and send the formerly overpriced trash to Exteria.

Change the mission of the former Staters to something akin to international dog poo patrolmen. Then redistribute them to shitholes all over the planet, until they crack and go away.

U.S. Delivers First Relief Aid to Burma; Critics Ponder Airdropping Aid Directly to Cyclone Survivors

RANGOON, Burma — A U.S. plane ferried relief to Burma, renamed Myanmar by the ruling military junta, for the first time Monday, but with 2 million cyclone victims facing disease and starvation, a radical proposal was gaining ground: Airdropping aid without the junta's approval.

Even as the death toll from Cyclone Nargis climbed to 31,938, the country's military rulers continued to bar almost all foreign experts experienced in managing humanitarian crises, saying they would handle relief efforts on their own.

With hundreds of thousands of homes destroyed in the disaster zone, refugees packed into Buddhist monasteries. Others camped in the open, drinking dirty water contaminated by dead bodies and animal carcasses. Medicine and food were sorely lacking — even as supplies bottled up at the main international airport.

Jordanian Man Charged in Honor Killing of Sister

AMMAN, Jordan — A man who is suspected of drowning his 22-year-old sister for having an extramarital affair was charged Monday with premeditated murder, a judicial official said.

The unidentified woman's brother beat her with the help of his family Saturday and then took her to the Dead Sea where he drowned her, said the official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

The state prosecutor also charged the woman's parents and another brother Monday with assisting in the murder by knowing about it and beating the woman before she died, the official said.

The woman was killed after an unidentified man was seen leaving her house, the official said.

An average of 20 Jordanian women are killed by relatives every year in so-called honor killings in this tribal-dominated society.

/How dare they charge the man? It was his Koranic duty!

Amazingly Willie kept going all these decades, transformed his entertainment persona, and kept on selling and performing...

Meanwhile Glen Campbell got stuck on the county fair circuit it seems...

So many of those entertainers from the 70's, who did all those many TV variety shows, are gone. Remember the Tony Orlando show? Sonny and Cher? Helen Reddy?

I fear that if Obama is elected, the State Dept will continue and get worse. It is an entrenched bureaucrasy that is populated by morons.

We need McCain to clean it out.

248 bill-tb  Tue, May 13, 2008 6:27:48am

The problem has always been the State Department -- It's infested with grou think and liberal PC crap.

249 Opinionated  Tue, May 13, 2008 7:15:45am

This is outrageous. How could this be?

Who's in charge?

Barack Hussein Obama?

Condoleezza Hussein Rice?

George W Hussein Bush?

250 Seraphym  Tue, May 13, 2008 7:21:16am

Have a read of this memo from Manuel Miranda to Ambassador Crocker of the Baghdad Embassy, blasting the State Department for its inequities.

It's just the tip of the iceberg with State. It's been this way with them for years.

Foggy Bottom might be a neighborhood, but if any agency deserves to be based there, it's the State Department.

Still, at this point they seem to have completely lost any pretense of rational thought in their policy-making.

US State Department - the JimmyDhimmi Carter arm of the Government.

251 Spiny Norman  Tue, May 13, 2008 7:41:57am

Does anyone think we will ever see a President and/or Secretary of State who will have the backbone to stand up to the "culture" of "diplomacy for its own sake, damn the results" rather than meekly submit to the bureaucratic inertia?

In media-dominated age, I very seriously doubt it.

Even Reagan barely kept his head above water. I often wonder how much of his foreign policy ideas were sabotaged by his political opponents in the State Department...

Sometime the obvious hope comes riding in and is blindly rejected. Rudy Giuliani.

254 Bleepless  Tue, May 13, 2008 6:46:01pm

This is not the first time. Under Gorbachev, the State Department spent a lot of time schmoozing with Russian nationalists. Wow! Overnight, all of them dropped anti-Americanism, anti-Semitism and hatred for democracy. What? They didn't? You mean . . . the State Department's one and only approach to totalitarian scum didn't work? Surely you jest.
