Fedora 9

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 11:34:22 am PDT

If you’re a Linux lizard, version 9 of the Fedora Core was released today at the Fedora Project. Everyone in the known universe seems to be downloading it right now; I couldn’t find one mirror site working at better than about 20K/second, so I’m currently downloading the Bittorrent version. It’s still slow—I have about 4 hours left in the download—but better than the HTTP and FTP mirror sites.

Charles: What is the purpose of running Linux on a separate partition, or using any of the "two OSes simultaneously" programs?

I mean, I can see that for some people it's geeky fun -- but if (like me) one doesn't enjoy geeky fun, what purpose could it serve? Why are you doing it?

Running Windows alongside OSX I can see a reason for -- because there might be a Windows-only application one might need to run. But Linux? Unless you're using your home computer as a server, then why?

This officer must have misspoke. That certainly cannot be the first time beer had taken priority over children.

The reason I mention this is that I recently scanned the list of the most popular YouTube videos, and this one was way up near the top, with 2,275,118 views. It consists of nothing but a curvanceous girl gyrating to funky beat. Just a homemade video. No point being made, except "Look at me dance!"

From the comments section, it seems that men around the world had their brains stop functioning upon seeing the video.

Political videos might get 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 views if they're lucky. Videos of guys falling on their faces and girls dancing get millions of views.

But what really gets me is the repetition of the "Israel's Fouding Uprooted Hundreds of Thousands of Palestinians" lie...

It wasn't Israel's founding that uprooted the Arab (there were not 100,000 Palestinian Arabs then) but the Arabs rejection of the partition plan and choice to go to war with Israel to murder every Jew, and destroy the State, in addition to the Arab nations insistance that Arabs "get out of their way".

Do you believe in aliens, Kilgore? Personally I doubt it, beyond some prokaryotes or such, not for theological reasons, I just don't think life supporting planets are all that common. Life came up quickly on ours, but it was still a long shot, seems to me, even if you get the right gravity, distance from the sun, etc.
Of course, if God wants other life forms, they may be there, with cultures and all, but to me this is as much faith as any religious belief anyway.

Party officials predicted high turnout for West Virginia’s Democratic primary on Tuesday despite the widespread belief that Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton would score an easy victory.

Keep in mind these people are essentially going out and voting against Obama. Unless they are of the belief that Clinton will somehow be able get the nomination....

Here's an interesting thought about aliens I stole from Marcel Lossi:

"If an alien civilization comparable to our own exists, it should achieve singularity within 200 or 300 years after the invention of radio. I think it is more likely that the aliens are too advanced. If technology on the planck-scale or even sub-planck scale is possible and they have uploaded themselves into the quantum foam or explored the higher-dimensional spaces of the multiverse as described by M-theory they would be invisible. They would transcend our universe before moving more than a few lightyears. It wouldn’t make sense for them to convert the universe into 'computronium'. If they can create new universes with completely different laws of physics (for example a much higher light speed, a smaller planck length, more dimensions... everything that could be used for better information processing) why should they expand in this universe. It would be as pointless as trying to exploit the additional computational capacity of computer chips by arranging them as an abacus."

There is no official doctrine from the Magisterium on the subject.

What I have heard from orthodox priests and theologians is that aliens might or might not have souls (consciousness of Goodness, Truth, Beauty....quickie definition.) Even if they had souls, they might not be fallen creatures, and thus would not need a savior.
CS Lewis's space trilogy has an unfallen planet in it w/ weird little innocent creatures....visited by fallen humans.

It is very difficult to accept the possibility that we are alone in this vast universe, even though there is no scientific evidence to support this belief. It is however purely a matter of faith, and should not be taught in science class.

But do they have souls?

And if so, is it our duty to make them aware of salvation through Jesus?

re: #107 Killgore Trout

Good questions. Any of our resident theologians know?

Humans are made in the image of God. God is not an old man in the sky, he is extra-physical, so obviously this doesn't refer to our appearance. Rather, it is our reasoning, our ability to communicate, etc [In a qualitativly different way than other animals do]. This is evidence of a soul/spirit. If we found extra-terrestrials with these traits, more like us than other animals, I think most churches would assume they had souls as well. If they sinned, which seems likely, I would assume that Jesus died for them just as much as for me, even though they were seperated by vast space.

Basically, it (appeared to be) just a light that traveled across the entire expanse of the sky, from one horizon to the other, in about ten or fifteen seconds. Happened right after dusk. At the time I thought it must be some kind of experimental aircraft that was traveling mind-bogglingly fast. But in retrospect I think it may have been a satellite either in low orbit or falling to earth and reflecting the sun's light toward me "alpenglow-style"; alternately, it was a bird or a small flock of birds that were much much closer than I realized and hence weren't traveling that fast at all. But it looked much more like an illuminated light, and not light reflecting off something.

It was not, however, a "flying saucer," nor were there little grey men, or whatever. Just something unidentified in the sky. Nothing more. I suspect it had a pedestrian explanation.

I agree. I find it ridiculous that folks think alien species would be interested in us here on this planet. How absurd! I'm sure, to any advanced alien race capable of visiting, we'd be considered barbarians. And, for the most part they'd be correct.

huh? We're interested in exotic animals found on distant islands, in backwards, aboriginal tribes. Do you think E.T. intelligent life would automatically preclude such curiosity?

North Carolina Community Colleges Will No Longer Admit Illegal Immigrants

RALEIGH, N.C. — North Carolina's community colleges will no longer admit illegal immigrants, returning to more restrictive policy on the advice of the state Attorney General's Office.

Last year, the system said it would enroll illegal immigrants who are 18 years old and high school graduates at all of its 58 campuses. The policy provoked heavy criticism, especially from the leading candidates for governor.

The system later asked North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper for guidance on whether the admissions policy was legal under federal law. Last week, Cooper's office suggested the system drop the admissions policy.

On Tuesday, the community colleges said it would follow the advice from Cooper's office.

I suspect that most atheists and agnostics believe in aliens.
It is very difficult to accept the possibility that we are alone in this vast universe, even though there is no scientific evidence to support this belief. It is however purely a matter of faith, and should not be taught in science class.

Actually, it is perfectly valid in science to discuss what the requirements for life are, and where life could exist.
I also find it useful to discuss life that isn't as we know it, because it gives me a chance to talk about energy sources, chemical reactions that produce or consume energy, etc.

Human Shield Movement to Iran receives 10,000th pledge

The Human Shield Movement to Iran today claimed its 10,000th pledge volunteer and warned President Bush that any attempt at military intervention against Iran would be met by a massive mobilization of human shields.

The human shield movement to Iran has been mobilizing for over three years now using online mechanisms such as Pledge Bank to secure volunteers willing to travel to Iran to position themselves around civilian infrastructure sites in order to try and prevent what they believe would be a catastrophic and unjustified attack. Whilst it is expected that most missiles will be directed at military installations the human shields are concerned that sites in the Iranian capital will also be targeted. Today Steven Morris from Birmingham was the 10,000th person to pledge himself as human shield volunteer. Volunteers from 22 countries have already pledged themselves to the mission and are currently in the latter stages of preparation in order to be ready to travel to Iran "at very short notice".

Well, yes and no.
They are "pure intelligences," not physical beings and therefore do not occupy space. (We could digress here into the # of angels dancing on the head of a pin stuff, if we wanted to!) On the other hand, when acting as messengers from God to humans they have to reveal themselves in bodily, sensate form or we couldn't get the message.....thus apparitions, voices, etc. They therefore can't be angels (in the strict meaning of messengers) w/o being terrestrial!

Spanx sounds dirty to me.....

How did you come up with the Spanx name?
Sara Blakely recognized the value of the "k" sound. Kodak and Coca-Cola are two of the most recognized brand names in the world and in comedy. It is a trade secret that "k" words make people laugh and feel good. So Sara felt that the "k" was good luck and had to be in her product's name. SPANKS hit her one day like a lightning bolt and eventually became SPANX with an "X" because she also knew that made up names were more successful than real names. We feel the name is edgy, fun, extremely catchy and for a moment it makes your mind wander (admit it). Plus, it's all about making women's butts look better, so why not?

Mmm-hmmm.

Doesn't he know that's what a butcher knife is for?

Here you go.

A Fort Worth man trying to scratch an itch on his back used a revolver and accidentally shot himself.

Jorge Espinal, 44, was drinking beer and playing poker around 3 a.m. Sunday in his home in the 3500 block of Montague Street, when he got up from the table and walked into another room, said Fort Worth police Lt. Kenneth Dean.

“He told officers he had an itch on his back and grabbed the first thing he could get a hold of, which was a revolver,” Lt. Dean said. “The gun went off."

Mr. Espinal went back and told his buddies that he shot himself. “They didn’t believe him until they saw the blood coming down his back,” Lt. Dean said.

Mr. Espinal was taken to an area hospital, where he was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Street kids call the magazine sales firm “The Cult”, as in once you start working for the company it’s hard to get out.

“They actually came here last year and I was living here and they actually took five kids away from here and two of them never came back,” Cook said.

Consider the case of the 16-year-old runaway in protective custody. After being approached by the company at a fast food restaurant she and her boyfriend were offered rooms at a north Spokane motel. However soon the amount of money they owed the company for rent or food outpaced their magazine sales and the teens did not feel they were free to leave the organization.

“During the day they were monitored where they went so they were really scrutinized and that’s not really freedom and as you said the jobs it’s more like owing the company store,” Meta Marshall with the Spokane Police Department said.

Marshall tracks runaways for the police and worries about travel crews trolling for recruits in area parks and teen shelters.

“It’s gotta be kids they pick up all over, if this outfit’s operating in Washington but also taking the kids down to California and Florida, there have to be other caravans,” Marshall said.

If the class firmly states that there are other forms of intelligent life, then that isn't science.
If it discusses the probabilities and the requirements, and includes "why haven't we seen them", then it is science.

As for why we haven't detected them, if there is anything better than radio for long-distance communication, that's what they'd use, and we don't know it.
But our current searches couldn't even detect our own transmissions around 10-20 light years away, so the lack of finding "Betelgueseian Idol" doesn't mean there aren't aliens there.

I found some of it. Here is the relevant portion.

"I want to spend the rest of my life with the woman at the end of that table there, but that does not stop me wanting to see several thousand more naked bottoms before I die, because that's what being a bloke is. When man invented fire, he didn't say, "Hey, let's cook." He said, "Great, now we can see naked bottoms in the dark." As soon as Caxton invented the printing press, we were using it to make pictures of, hey, naked bottoms! We have turned the Internet into an enormous international database of naked bottoms. So you see, the story of male achievement through the ages, feeble though it may have been, has been the story of our struggle to get a better look at your bottoms. ~Coupling, "Inferno," original airdate 2 June 2000, written by Steven Moffat, spoken by the character Steve"

re: #327 Kosh's Shadow

If the class firmly states that there are other forms of intelligent life, then that isn't science.
If it discusses the probabilities and the requirements, and includes "why haven't we seen them", then it is science.

As for why we haven't detected them, if there is anything better than radio for long-distance communication, that's what they'd use, and we don't know it.
But our current searches couldn't even detect our own transmissions around 10-20 light years away, so the lack of finding "Betelgueseian Idol" doesn't mean there aren't aliens there.

What are blathering about?
They're here.

If you've ever been to Fargo you know that several miles south of Fargo in the winter = the middle of nowhere. I'm trying to push the car out of the ditch when suddenly this truck appears, a guy gets out with a chain, hooks it up, and pulls us out. He gets back in the truck and drives away.

Abraham's hospitality is the basis of the Jewish commandment ("mitzvah") of "hachnasat orchim"-entertaining visitors, lehachnis in Hebrew is 'to put in' or 'to allow to enter' in this case. In other words, it is critically important how you treat your guests.

Unfortunately, the space cadet sneezed and left some strands of mucous on some slimy rocks -- and voila! the next thing ya knew -- the planet was fecund!

re: #416 Ma Sands

I found this in the text "The Book of God" by Gabriel Josipovici. He devotes an entire chapter on "The Man in the Field." He discusses how modern commentators are at a loss to explain this strange figure...but "the Jewish exegetes are in no doubt at all that what we are witnessing here is Divine Providence at work...he is sent by God to further God's plans, and this fits in with the rabbis' consistently held basic premise that the Bible is written by God and reflects his concern for mankind" (p 278).

I believe there are other reasons why the rabbis identified the "man in the field" as Gabriel (..."That the figure is the angel Gabriel is attested by the reference to him in Daniel 9:21 as 'the man Gabriel" -- from The Book of God, Josipovici, p. 278). Josipovici also notes that "..starting from the assumption that the Bible is written by God and that therefore not only every episode but every word and every letter has a meaning, the rabbis are able to account for the most minute details of any biblical text."

re: #426 Ma Sands

My pleasure Ma Sands. One time, a friend told me I wouldn't believe what she just saw. I saw she was pale white and I said "a ghost" and she told me she saw two. Two children playing. My father described two playing also.

"Polyphemus?"

Yes...that's the one...and Ulysses tells the Cyclops his name (Ulysses's name) is "nobody"....so when fellow Cyclops ask what's wrong -- Polyphemus says he's been hurt by nobody...

Seems like nobody tries Gentoo Linux. Gentoo is nice in that you have complete control over your installation and configuration process. Of course, it's closer to "Linux from scratch" than it is Ubuntu Gentoo has this awesome tool called emerge which downloads the source of any program you want to install, compiles it, and installs it on your machine. Of course, compiling a kernel and customizing every option is not for everyone. It is, however, a nice choice for those who want to understand the nitty gritty of Linux.
