When Discredited Hacks Attack

Tue, May 13, 2008 at 6:48:53 pm PDT

St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Tim Townsend has penned a thoroughly predictable hit piece for the thoroughly biased Columbia Journalism Review, whining about the poor treatment he received at the hands of anonymous internet commenters when he was exposed as a shill for the Saudi-funded radical Islamic front group calling itself the Council on American Islamic Relations: CJR: Love Thy Neighbor.

Please note that Townsend was also exposed as a fraud and a liar, earlier this year, when he wrote an entirely fictional article for the Post-Dispatch describing the horrible tribulations of a homeless woman who did not exist, leading to an apology from his employer—but no corrective action to prevent further fraud, of course.

And Townsend fails to mention that his employer also posted a correction to his smear piece about LGF.

Welcome to the mainstream media, in the 21st century.

Besides being called ignorant, arrogant, balding, stupid, rude, fat (my new nickname was Burger Boy), lazy, and incompetent, I was depicted as a Satanic baby. My mother was insulted. I was accused of lying about my academic degrees, having a comb-over, being a paid agent of the Saudi government, and acquiring “numerous social diseases.” I was, apparently, a plagiarist and a terrorist. Someone did a search to see if I was a pedophile. Others stuck with more generalized invective:

Tim Townsend—you’re a smarmy little fuck, aren’t you?

Townsend really should have checked on Dan Rather’s career before he messed with Charles.

What a chickenshit little cocksucker. Another journalouse prick with a face for radio.

"The religion beat in an age of intolerance"

This guy hasn't wandered very far from St. Louis, or maybe he just didn't keep his eyes open. If his understanding of intolerance is measured by rude comments online, maybe he should try to interview some Catholic schoolgirls in Indonesia, or some teachers in Thailand. Perhaps a trip to Jaipur to look at body parts might broaden his horizons, and help him to know what 'intolerance' really means..

More on Tim's latest mess

In "A Time to Renew Hope," which appeared on the front page of the Post's March 23 edition, Gillis related to Townsend how in 2005 her husband burned down their house and later slashed her throat. After the trauma, she told Townsend, she ended up homeless, only to eventually find a new life as head chef at Centenary CARES, an outreach program run by Centenary United Methodist Church downtown.

problem was..

%u2022 The woman's name, according to her mother, is Pamala Brown.

%u2022 She is 51, not 42.

%u2022 She is wanted for violating probation on bad-check writing and forgery charges.

If a particular tenet of a particular faith has the potential to influence the public discourse outside the walls of the church, synagogue, or mosque, reporters are responsible for holding it up to the same scrutiny as any other idea tossed into the public square for debate.

Yeah, unless that faith is Islam.

This is true, and it wasn't just him. But as far as I know, ritual blood sacrifices are no longer part of the gig. Haven't been for a long time.

That was pure and utter snark, just to be clear. I liken that kind of thinking to that of finding moral equivalence between modern Islamo-terrorism and the Crusades of the Middle Ages. It's just stupid, but I guarantee you that the very mention of modern animal sacrifices would lead to the exclamation of Abraham and scores of other Old Testament figures by a guy like Timmah. I doubt he would even deny it.

OK, he starts with the Puritans as a mark of Christian religious intolerance in America; followed by a reference to the Fore Fathers and the First Amendment of the US Constitution; Muslims live in fear of Americans for some unexplained reason; ending with Charles Johnson being a mean blow hard and the lizard army is a pack of blood thirsty terrorists picking on poor Tim Townsend. Did I miss anything?

Townsend fails to mention the context behind CAIR's new letter of the FBI being asked to investigate LGF and its commentors such as it was CAIR that did the asking. What was the clock time behind the discovery of "hate crimes" on LGF, reporting it to the FBI and the press release? Less than 3 hours if I remember correctly.

Here's a question for the folks out there - the mosque had to get building permits for the structure. What did they say and what was on the building application? How was it represented to the local community (in NYC, building projects have to clear with community boards, city planning, and the buildings department (well, that latter part has been questionable of late) before they get shovels in the ground)?

These are questions that could resolve the veracity of his claims.

What puzzles me the most is why this useful idiot would so obviously inflate his exaggeration of the number of hostile emails he received from LGF'ers. Maybe I'm working from the wrong set of parameters here, but a typical 1500 comment thread would consist at most of a couple hundred commenters TOTAL, which would lead to a response rate via email of at most around 50%, and probably much higher.

From that it's easy to conclude without great insight that either he's grossly inflating the numbers of emails, or he was targeted by a deliberate attack by a group staunchly opposed to LGF in order to smear the credibility of this space.

Candidates include:
CAIR
Markos' brave warriors
Strict creationist windbags
A cast of thousands.

OT

Sept 11 TV broadcasts are archived here

(You have to surf through the right hand column to watch them as the direct links don't seem to work.)

On the CBS broadcast before the first plane hits, the weatherman's comments have an eerie irony considering the events of the day.

222 Mich-again  Tue, May 13, 2008 7:56:09pm

I'm sure that Tim Townsend, avowed critic of Religions that creep into secular life, will jump all over this story of a nutjob religious fanatic who threatened the guide dog of a student. SCSU Student Leaves Training at Technical High School

Oh wait, the nutjob was a Somali Muslim. Never mind.

A St. Cloud State University student in a teacher-training program at Technical High School left the school in late April because he says he feared for the safety of his service dog.

The school district calls it a misunderstanding, and officials there say they hoped Tyler Hurd, a 23-year-old junior from Mahtomedi who aspires to teach special education, would continue his training in the district.

Hurd said a student threatened to kill his service dog named Emmitt. The black lab is trained to protect Hurd when he has seizures....

The threat came from a Somali student who is Muslim, according to Hurd, St. Cloud State and school district officials.

The Muslim faith, which is the dominant faith of Somali immigrants, forbids the touching of dogs.

I saw another vid today of a Palestinian boiler room operation, phone banks manned for Obama. I think this has been covered here before, but it is still ongoing.

You know where you find sympathy in the dictionary...he brought it on himself...but he must have laughed his butt off at Goof scaring the pedestrians again. Y'all really should put a webcam up.

Actually one of the kids took a video of Goof in full pedestrian fright mode and posted it on myspace. I don't like to watch it because it was taken right after we got Monty back and after two weeks on his own he was so thin and sore. Maybe I'll get another video since everyone is healthy now.

Just another front in the War Against Infidels.

Let me be clear, if I saw one of my neighbors (I have a lot of diversity in my area, despite living in suburbia) is being threatened by someone because of race or color or creed, I would not hesitate to step in. Mess with good people you'll get set down.

My beef (or pork in this case) is with people like CAIR and this "Timmy". Acting like some sense of self preservation and concern over obvious issues is simply ignorant and bigoted.

BTW-Every time I read it I think of "Timmy" the wheel chair kid on South Park.

[laugh, snort]

Anyone else?

Yep. Interesting because the St. Cloud area has been riddled with real and percieved racial and anti-semitic vandalism.

Any chance the anti-semitic stuff is coming from someone other than the bitter, typical white rednecks?

Got it. I do think sometimes we are so vigilant on these issues that on occassion it is important to point out that the average LGF lizard is a good person that would never let someone get hassled...

CAIR can take care of itself...but individual people in your neighborhood...don't tread.

The Bill of Rights doesn't promise "protection," it gives freedom.

Around here you can add dogs, and especially Labradors to that list as well. But did you notice the theme of that story was that it was all a "misunderstanding". Not that it was about a fanatic who threatened to kill a guide dog because it offended his idiotic religion.

I think this hatred of dogs truly speaks volumes of who they are. To hate a dog is to deny the existence of unconditional love. Which given their beliefs is unsurprising.

242 Charles  Tue, May 13, 2008 8:13:22pm

Townsend's claim that he received "more than a hundred emails" from LGF readers is laughable. In all the time I've been running LGF, in all the controversies we've been involved with, I have NEVER received that many emails on a single topic. Not even from the Ron Paulians.

It's another blatant lie.

Why is this lying hack writing for the Columbia Journalism Review? Tells you a lot about that organization.

No Kidding!

I guess the fact that he was brought low by those whom mainstream journalists loathe (those pesky internet fact checkers), is much more important to the liberal CJR than the fact that he not only blurred, but obliterated, the line between journalism and fiction.

Either Mr. Townsend knows that he's friends with Islamic terrorist supporters and doesn't care that we know, or...

What amazes me is the thin skin of journalists. They routinely strip the bark off random people in their articles, but when criticized themselves for incompetence, laziness, or stupidity they truly can't take the heat.

This man is just striking out verbally at LGF because the focus on his bias and poor writitng has gotten under his skin.

Like any 8-year-old, he's lashing out to distract attention from the fact that he got caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

I often wonder what it would be like if we had some group of people, a profession maybe, whose job it was to gather accurate information and disseminate it so that other people might be informed about the world and the things that happen in it.

Nah, never happen.
