What have Abbas and Fatah accomplished? Since its inception in 1994, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has been ruled by Fatah, first under Yasser Arafat and now under Abbas. Abbas, the number two person in the PLO under Arafat, was a co-founder of the Fatah terrorist organization. Thus, he is partly responsible for decades of atrocities against innocent civilians, including the murder of 500 Israelis between 2000 and 2007. The Fatah movement's constitutional charter, similar to Hamas's founding document, still has 10 articles that call for Israel's destruction, approve use of terrorism against the country, oppose any political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and label Zionism as racism. Resolutions in both the U.S. House and Senate are now urging Abbas to rescind these articles. If actions speak louder than words, then the PA leadership has also failed to deliver on any of its signed commitments under all the various, and still binding, peace agreements. Abbas has yet to make real and sustained efforts to end terrorism, jail terrorists or confiscate their illegal weapons.
More troubling, Abbas has done nothing about ending the incitement to hatred and murder against Jews and Americans that daily spews forth from PA institutions directly under his administrative and financial control: the PA's media, mosques, schools and youth camps. This 24/7 incitement has fomented an ideology of hate and a culture of violence, the focus of which is Israel, Jews in general, and the United States.

The "new car" smell that is most harmful is one that used to come in a spray can. Car detailers and car dealers would use it to give a not-new car that "new car" smell. It was banned ~5 years or so ago.

The assignment for Virginia Commonwealth University fashion students: design an abaya, an enveloping cloak worn by Muslim women, that is stylish yet acceptable in Arab countries. The results: elaborately beaded designs, a flamenco-influenced abaya, a punk rock abaya — and perhaps a better understanding of cultural norms in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar, where the university has had a campus for 10 years.
"We were trying to make a feeling of youth — but still be true to their culture," said Kendra Palin, a fashion design major who partnered with classmate Shelby Day to design an abaya with looped buttonholes, princess seams and a high waist. "Everything else had to be black, but the embellishment could be any color, and we used silver and blue."

NGON, Myanmar (AP) - Another powerful storm headed toward Myanmar's cyclone-devastated delta, where so little aid has reached that the U.N. warned on Wednesday of a "second wave of deaths" among an estimated 2 million survivors.
The U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said there is a good chance that "a significant tropical cyclone" will form within the next 24 hours and head across the Irrawaddy delta area. The area was pulverized by Cyclone Nargis on May 3, leaving at least 34,273 dead and 27,838 missing, according to the government. The U.N. says the death toll could exceed 100,000. An estimated 2 million survivors of the storm are still in need of emergency aid. But U.N. agencies and other groups have been able to reach only 270,000 people so far.
In a sign that Myanmar may allow outside help, Dr. Thawat Sutharacha of Thailand's Public Health Ministry said Wednesday the junta has given permission to a Thai medical team to go to the cyclone-hit delta.
If the team is able to go as scheduled on Friday, it would be the first foreign aid group to work in the ravaged Irrawaddy delta.

Iran's intelligence minister said on Wednesday that those behind the bomb blast in a mosque that killed 14 people last month also planned to target a Russian consulate in the Islamic state, an Iranian news agency reported.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the United States, Israel and Britain on Tuesday of being responsible for the blast in the southern city of Shiraz that also wounded 200 people.

Israel files official complaint with Egypt over Farouk Hosni's remarks, may thwart his appointment as UNESCO secretary-generalItamar Eichner Published: 05.14.08, 14:25 / Israel News
Diplomatic tensions have arised between Israel and Egypt due to a harsh statement made recently by Egyptian Culture Minister Farouk Hosni. In a conference that took place in the Egyptian Parliament last week, the minister said that he “would burn Israeli books himself if found in Egyptian libraries.”Israeli Ambassador to Cairo Shalom Cohen defined this statement in a classified report that he submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem as “harsh and especially blunt, in a way which makes it impossible for Israel and for the international community to continue a regular agenda with Egypt.”

In case anyone didn't hear... the Democrats in Congress were trying to force Bush's hand before his trip, in dealing with the KSA. As part of the high oil price politics, their game was to send a message to the KSA that unless KSA pumped more oil then a pending arms sale could be scuttled...
With that as background:
Russia eyes $4 bln arms contract with Saudis
MOSCOW, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport is preparing a $4 billion arms contract with Saudi Arabia, the Gazeta daily reported on Tuesday.
[...]
The arms contract with the Saudis could also boost Russia's admission to the World Trade Organization. During ongoing bilateral negotiations with Moscow, Riyadh demanded access to Russian hydrocarbon deposits and pipelines.
FYI, Russia during the past couple of years has often been the #1 oil (crude) producer, and #2 exporter, while KSA has been the #2 oil producer and #1 exporter. Closer cooperation between the two nations wrt oil would be interesting, to say the least...
Note to Congress: KSA pumps oil to make money for themselves but also to optimize their long term production. They aren't going to jump through hoops, and there are plenty of other sources for arms deals than the USA.

"...Thus the question is: How long will these Arab states continue to be afraid, after Beirut fell into the hands of the Iranians and Fouad Siniora's government continues to be held under siege in much the same way as the legislative Lebanese leadership? Moreover, the Palestinian cause is no longer under Arab control after Hamas has become a puppet in the hands of the Iranians and Syrians.
Confrontation is the only option that the Arabs have with Iran and the lesser degree of confrontation is to hold steadfast onto political positions without retreating or lagging behind through inaction. What they fear today will happen tomorrow since Iran is expanding in all the Arab states; it is critical for the Arabs to counteract the collapse of the Arab nation and prevent it from being ripped apart internally..."

His latest outburst against the Jewish state coincided with the arrival of American President George W. I don't think it makes a damn what the Dems do - Bush has already publicly begged the Saudis for lower oil prices and been just as publicly rebuffed. They are not going to do anything now except humiliate him again.
The Dems are stupid though. Rather than go after arms deals, they should go after grain shipments. Saudi Arabia imports every last damned bite of food they consume and we still produce a huge chunk of the world food supply.

More than 50,000 people are dead, missing or buried under rubble after China's devastating earthquake, officials said Wednesday as the full horror of the disaster began to emerge.
Rescue teams who punched into the quake's stricken epicentre reported whole towns all but wiped off the map, spurring frantic efforts to bring emergency relief to the survivors.Planes and military helicopters air-dropped supplies, 100 troops parachuted into a county that had been cut off, and rescuers in cities and towns across Sichuan province fought to pull the living and the dead from the debris.

Saudi Arabian importers have ordered customers of Danish medicines to boycott the products due to the reprinting of the Mohammed cartoons in February.
The fallout from the media’s reprinting of the Mohammed cartoons in February has not yet subsided in the Middle East, made apparent by yet another probable boycott of Danish products – this time medicines from Danish pharmaceutical companies, according to Saudi Gazette newspaper.
Saudi Arabian importers and retailers have ordered the nation’s hospitals and pharmacies to boycott all Danish drugs, e-mailing a list containing 41 medicines produced by companies such as Novo Nordisk, Lundbeck and Leo Pharma to those facilities and to the Saudi health ministry.
Dr. Abdul Moiz Shams, one of the physicians supporting the boycott, wrote to the Saudi Gazette that boycotting insulin was the most effective means of economically hurting the Danish economy.
’I would advise the world’s Muslims to consider just one product to boycott – insulin. It earns billions of dollars in profit for Denmark and is distributed all across the Gulf region,’ he said.
Who else produces insulin? Other pharmaceutical companies should stand firm and refuse to supply Saudi Arabia on the grounds that they are not proving to be a reliable customer and one with a dubious human rights record. I expect China will supply them, but with the quality of some Chinese drugs being questionable the Saudis might come to realise their mistake. One can hope

In an interview published Wednesday with the London-based Arabic-language newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat, Mohamed Hassan Akhtari said that "the imam Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran saw the Palestinian problem their own, and therefore set the global Jerusalem Day in the month of Ramadan in support of the Palestinian issue.
"As we all know, the Hamas movement and the Islamic Jihad were established after the Islamic revolution victory in Iran, inspired by the imam Khomeini and the resistance he led."

Good news so far.
Where I work I send out a daily trivia question. Usually something insipid, with multiple guess questions, like "What was the name of..." or "How many..." but today's question is easy enough. How many branches of the US government are there. Now my audience is atypical. I work for a company heavy on the Masters, Pharmacists, and at least Bachelors level side. (I work for CVS-Caremark). But still I never know what to expect. I send the question out each morning to about 50 people or so that ask to participate. And so far, of the 30 or so answers (and this time I did not provide multiple choice answers for people to pick from) only 1 of the 30 did not know the right answer. Maybe there is hope for the lay public?

Just as Rome in the final days had to continually entertain its citizens with ever more depravity to amuse them as the barbarians crept towards the doors...

Yesterday I took him out to a large field and let him off leash for the first time. I didn't know what to expect. He ran and romped and rolled and rocked. But he didn't run off , and came back to me as soon as I called. I was delighted.
We are going up to our cabin in the Upper Peninsula in a couple of weeks - I can't wait to find out if he can swim.
I sent off his DNA sample last Friday - two or three weeks I should know what I have here, other than a floofball of love.

You are a crazy country," Tutu, 76, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, said in an interview with the Tribune. "You're a country that has I think some of the most generous people I've ever come across in the world."But he chided Americans for getting "very, very upset" with the pastor of Sen. Barack Obama, noting that Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. "may have said more crudely what, actually, almost every African-American would have wanted to say. I mean that is how they feel in your country, that race ... is a very, very real issue."
"And I think on the whole you keep trying to pretend it isn't," he added, noting the issue will haunt Americans until there is a way to talk honestly about race, such as holding a reconciliation forum

Now, you take our pal Droplet, here. He made a couple of out-of-line statements, but rather than say something of substance, such as "this is why I think what I think," or "here is my reasoning," or something of the sort, he's busy backing and filling over his original cowpat.
Not a lot of imagination, not really interesting.

HOW FEDERAL JOBS ARE FILLED
Many Federal agencies fill their jobs like private industry by allowing applicants to contact the agency directly for job information and application processing. Most Federal agencies are responsible for their own hiring actions. Resumes are preferred when applying; however, the Optional Application for Federal Employment, OF 612, is also accepted. Also, most positions do not require a written test. While the process is similar to that in private industry, there are differences due to the laws, executive orders, and regulations that govern Federal employment

A human rights group says a 24-year-old Syrian blogger has been convicted and sentenced to three years in prison on charges of undermining the prestige of the state and weakening national morale. In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Wednesday, The National Organization for Human Rights in Syria condemned the verdict issued the day before as "outrageous" and called for Tarek Bayassi's immediate release.
The rights group says Bayassi's sentence was commuted to three years after an original sentence of six years. Bayassi was arrested last May in northwest Syria for surfing sites of Syrian opposition groups and posting comments online.

That is true - but virtually all of the ones that don't require a test these days do require a college diploma. Postal employees, census workers and secretaries along with some other similar positions still have a test.

If the droplet ever comes back, maybe he can address:
1. The need for the U.S. to support all civil societies/true democracies aroound the world, of which Israel is a prime example surrounded by authoritarian adversaries,
and...
2. The impossibility of remaining rich and isolated on our continent because other people in the world know we're here.
Feelings aside, he has little factual support.
1. What "need?" Your need? Would you have US military bases in every country that has some form of elections?
2. We've always done well with our trading partners, and only messed up when we meddled in their affairs (Latin America, Asia, etc). There are ways to deal with nations (Commie China) that can be fruitful for both parties, without demanding they have town hall meetings.

Speaking of our most delightful addiction:
U.S. buys more Med crude to replace lost Nigerian
LONDON, May 13 (Reuters) - U.S. oil companies have been boosting purchases of light, sweet crude from the Mediterranean to meet peak summer gasoline demand, in place of unreliable, similar quality supplies from Nigeria, traders said on Tuesday. At least six very large crude carriers (VLCCs), each carrying 2 million barrels, have been fixed on a spot basis over the past month to transfer Azeri Light from Ceyhan in Turkey and Saharan Blend from Arzew in Algeria to the United States.
[...]
Seven of them were fixed [settled] after Royal Dutch Shell said it was unable to meet all supply contract obligations following rebels attack to an oil facility in late April, declaring a force majeure on Bonny Light crude."Some people are substituting Nigerian," one trading source said. "Azeri can be a direct alternative to Bonny Light."
Most of the chartered vessels carry Azeri Light and Saharan Blend . They are light, low-sulphur, or sweet, crudes similar to Bonny Light.
[...]
I like this newswire story because it does detail several interesting things:
Oil is traded, bought, and sold worldwide ("fungible");
Not all oil is equal (different qualities);
Oil supplies are constantly threatened by instability (in this case Nigeria.)
It also indirectly shows the result of you willing to pay $4/gal for gasoline... namely that US (or US serving) companies have the cash to go out into the market and get oil redirected here to the US.
Oh.. and on those delightful names: Azeri Light is not found in Turkey, it is from Azerbaijan, Saharan Blend is from Algeria, and Bonny Light is from Nigeria (which would be the #2 importer to the US should the Nigerians ever decide to stop fighting among themselves.)
Also... if only Monty Python was still going strong... imagine a scene at a gas station, someone pulls up in their Bently, and the full service attendant (decked out in formal waiter attire) walks up to the window and asks "What shall we have today - Bonny Light, Azeri Light, or Saharan Blend."

A 50-year-old Saudi woman asked for divorce after her husband lifted her face veil while she was sleeping, local press reported. For 30 years, the wife said she never showed her face to her husband in conformity with the tradition of her native village near the south western Saudi city of Khamis Mushayt.
"After all these years, he tries to commit such a big mistake," the wife told Saudi newspaper Al-Riyadh, after she left the house in total disbelief.
She said the husband apologized and promised never to do it again. This is not the first case of husbands who have not seen their wives' faces in decades.
In the past Al Arabiya has reported the case of Ali al-Qahtani, whose wife had been wearing the face veil for the entire ten years of their marrage. When he tried to take it off, she threatened to leave and only decided to stay after he swore never to try again.

Officials have also warned of dangers from increased strain on local dams as well as mudslides on brittle hillsides where rain has been forecast over the next few days.
Two hydropower stations in Maoxian county, where 7,000 residents and tourists remain stranded near the epicentre, were "seriously damaged." Authorities warned that dams could burst.
Landslides had blocked the flow of two rivers in northern Qingchuan county, forming a huge lake in a region where 1,000 have already died and 700 are buried, Xinhua said.
"The rising water could cause the mountains to collapse. We desperately need geological experts to carry out tests and fix a rescue plan," Xinhua quoted Li Hao, the county's Communist Party chief, as saying.
The quake had also stopped a river in the stricken Mianzhu region, prompting officials to evacuate residents and drain dams, downstream, the agency said.
Underscoring the urgency of relief efforts, the Communist Party's top discipline watchdog vowed to punish officials for any dereliction of duty.
Pictures from Beichuan, which rescuers have struggled to reach, showed near total devastation. Survivors lay alongside the dead in the open air, surrounded by rubble as state TV showed dramatic footage of soldiers parachuting in to help.

Ditto! Why would anyone get a 100+ lb. animal full of life and energy and then confine it in a cage all day? I use crates for training, too, but not ALL DAY! No wonder the poor pup jumps on people! It's probably begging to be released from jail to PLAY.
I have seven Labs. I also have five acres of land devoted to puppy playground. And well behaved (mostly!) dogs. I LOL when someone tells me how LUCKY I am to have well-mannered dogs. Luck has nothing to do with it! It is training, hard work and TIME with the dog. Nothing more, but nothing less, either.

But I'm sure you're right, we'd be a much better country if we just stood by and let Holocaust Part Deux unfold.
Ah but you don't quite grasp the subtle nuance of the Liberal Left. Just as the US was blamed for "abandoning Afghanistan" in the 1990's and letting the Taliban come to power, and then condemned America for toppling the Taliban in 2001. If the US acts to prevent the coming war on Israel, the Left will condemn Amerikkka the Meddler. However, if the US does notheing, and the Iranians attack Israel with an atomic bomb, killing hundreds of thousands, then the US will be blamed for failing to prevent it.

Barack Obama visited rural Cape Girardeau, Missouri yesterday.
During his speech he talked about the need for more Arabic speakers in Afghanistan.
Obama insisted:
"If they are all in Iraq, then its harder for us to use them in Afghanistan."
Truly.
The problem with this thinking is...
Afghans don't speak Arabic.
They speak Dari and Pashto

Hip dysplasia can be avoided somewhat by buying a dog from a reputable breeder who has had the parents X-rayed and certified by OFA as being free of that particular problem. Dogs should not be bred until they have turned 2 years old and have been OFA certified. Then your chances of getting a pup with hip problems greatly decreases.

Drip drip drip... Israel has as much right to exist as any of those Arab countries that formed in the 20th century following the breakup of the Ottoman Empire. That would include Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, etc. All are 20th Century creations - some have ties to historic entities that predate the Ottomans, while others - like Jordan and Saudi Arabia are modern inventions with governments put in place by the British and Lebanon and Syria with French influence (which is why the French are so interested in the situation in Lebanon and Syria these days).

So Toyota got some of their green mojo by stealing a U.S. semiconductor design:
Toyota. A $4.3 million verdict originally rendered against Toyota in 2005 for infringing patents in order to bring its Hybrid Synergy Drive system to market has now been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court. The original ruling came from a federal trial jury in Texas, which found that Toyota had used a microprocessor design that accepts torque information from both an external electric motor and internal combustion engine patented by Paice LLC, a McLean, Va., company, for its Prius. Toyota may have to pay Paice royalties for any future hybrid vehicles produced. It's ironic that Toyota had to crib a U.S. company's technical expertise to become America's Jolly Green Car Company, isn't it?

Barack Obama. The candidate for President is in our town today in an attempt to make inroads with voters while trying to make nice with the auto industry after trashing Detroit repeatedly over the last eight months. Let's see, we (Detroit) sucked as an industry, we were bad for the country, bad for the environment, out of touch with reality and irresponsible to boot, and now we're supposed to forget all that while you go chasing votes in the state? Good luck with that, Barry.

Dumbass...ABC News' David Wright and Sunlen Miller Report: Sporting a shiny new American flag pin at an appearance in Rush Limbaugh's hometown, Sen. Barack Obama came up with some novel reasons why the U.S. may be struggling in the war in Afghanistan.
Obama posited — incorrectly — that Arabic translators deployed in Iraq are needed in Afghanistan — forgetting, momentarily, that Afghans don’t speak Arabic.
“We only have a certain number of them and if they are all in Iraq, then its harder for us to use them in Afghanistan,” Obama said. ...
No sooner did Obama realize his mistake — and correct himself — but he immediately made another.
“We need agricultural specialists in Afghanistan, people who can help them develop other crops than heroin poppies, because the drug trade in Afghanistan is what is driving and financing these terrorist networks. So we need agricultural specialists,” he said.
So far, so good.
“But if we are sending them to Baghdad, they’re not in Afghanistan,” Obama said.
Iraq has many problems, but encouraging farmers to grow food instead of opium poppies isn’t one of them. In Iraq, oil fields not poppy fields are a major source of U.S. technical assistance.

What is worrisome is that another typhoon is approaching Burma. Go bananas today...
3 medium size bananas weigh approximately 1 pound.
A cluster of bananas is called a hand and consists of 10 to 20 bananas, which are known as fingers.
Banana plants are the largest plants on earth without a woody stem. They are actually giant herbs of the same family as lilies, orchids and palms.
Bananas are a good source of vitamin C, potassium and dietary fiber.
Bananas are America's #1 fruit.
Bananas are available all year-round. They are harvested every day of the year.
Bananas are great for athletic and fitness activity because they replenish necessary carbohydrates, glycogen and body fluids burned during exercise.
Bananas are perennial crops that are grown and harvested year-round. The banana plant does not grow from a seed but rather from a rhizome or bulb. Each fleshy bulb will sprout new shoots year after year.
Bananas have no fat, cholesterol or sodium.
Bananas were officially introduced to the American public at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition. Each banana was wrapped in foil and sold for 10 cents. Before that time, bananas came to America on the decks of sailing ships as sailors took a few stems home after traveling in the Caribbean.
Each banana plant bears only one stem of fruit. To produce a new stem, only two shoots - known as the daughter and the granddaughter - are allowed to grow and be cultivated from the main plant.
In 2001, there were more than 300 banana-related accidents in Britain, most involving people slipping on skins.
In Eastern Africa you can buy banana beer. This beer is brewed from bananas.
India is by far the largest world producer of bananas, growing 16.5 million tonnes in 2002, followed by Brazil which produced 6.5 million tonnes of bananas in 2002. To the Indians, the flower from the banana tree is sacred. During religious and important ceremonies such as weddings, banana flowers are tied around the head, for they believe this will bring good luck.
Over 96% of American households purchase bananas at least once each month.
Some horticulturists suspect that the banana was the earth's first fruit. Banana plants have been in cultivation since the time of recorded history. One of the first records of bananas dates back to Alexander the Great's conquest of India where he first discovered bananas in 327 B.C.
The average American consumes over 28 pounds of bananas each year.
The banana market is controlled by five large corporations - Chiquita (25%), Dole (25%), Del Monte (15%), Noboa (11%) and Fyffes (8%). Most bananas are grown on huge plantations, controlled by these corporate giants. The remaining banana production for export comes from small banana producers.
The phrase 'going bananas' was first recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary, and is linked to the fruit's 'comic' connections with monkeys.
The word 'banan' is Arabic for finger.
There are more than 500 varieties of banana in the world: The most common kinds are Dwarf Cavendish, Valery, and Williams Hybrid bananas. Other types of bananas include Apple and a small red banana called the Red Jamaica. A large type of banana called the plantain is hard and starchy and is almost eaten as a cooked vegetable. The Cavendish is the most common variety of bananas now imported to the United States. The Cavendish is a shorter, stubbier plant than earlier varieties. It was developed to resist plant diseases, insects and windstorms better than its predecessors. The Cavendish fruit is of medium size, has a creamier, smooth texture, and a thinner peel than earlier varieties.
There is no such thing as a banana tree. Bananas grow on plants.

They are shy, and reserved. They do tend to be nervous when introduced to new things. Remember - they have probably spent the first few years of their lives in a box at a kennel. My greyhound had never seen stairs, TV, patio doors, etc. But they catch on.
They need very little discipline as they are extremely compliant. Big old couch potatoes.

I've been a happy member of LGF for a while now, mostly a lurker. I just made a comment much earlier this morning here about how sick I was of the Middle East and it snowballed with scores of attacks, many of them vulgar and personal. I'm stunned and hurt.
I'm 46 yrs old and haven't been registered to vote since 2003. Live in Alabama. I don't claim to know everything. I'm open to all views and opinions.
How about opening yourself to the view that you ought to inform yourself of the facts before making such revolting statements about the Middle East. Israel has a right to be in Israel. Not Brooklyn, or Alaska or anywhere else. Israel. With their capital in Jerusalem. The Arab occupiers of Judea & Samaria can go on back to Arabia.

I have a toy poodle who is very sweet and quiet, as is my yorkie
the dog personality develops to accomodate its environment
dogs need calm and routine, so they can anticipate what is coming
I love my dogs
Of our 4 toys (and 3 standards) (actually one is a "tiny"), one is calm, one yaps when she wants something (like for us to steal a rawhide from another dog), and the other two yap a lot. One really does have a neurological problem, and the other one, the tiny, I think makes noise to remind us he's there.
The big ones bark when they hear a car door, a house door, or another dog. And once seven dogs are going, you have to get all to stop; one bark just gets them all going again.

Earthquake Leaves Dam in Danger of Breaking; Thousands in Danger
The world’s largest hydroelectric dam, located along the ridge of the Tibetan plateau, has been damaged in China’s worst earthquake in half a century.
Cracks in the Three Gorges Dam near Shanghai pose a serious threat to the center of relief operations at Dujiangyan where more than 100,000 military and tens of thousands of relief workers are working to free those trapped in the rubble.
Efforts to repair the damage to the dam has pulled thousands of military personnel away from rescue operations.

good morning! Dogs! Yayyy!
OR - before you get any dog, you have to consider the environment you're living in. An apt? Don't get a high exercise dog. Greyhounds are indeed lovely dogs, but they're very shy (not burgler proof) - and they can NEVER be taken off lead when outside. They are glorious sight hounds and will chase anything that moves.
Joint problems - glucosomine Chondroitin. Check with you vet about brands. Some are formulated overseas and not reliable.
Jack Russel Terriers and chewing - you lose.

Good catch. They had a bunch of rain right after the quake which would put more pressure on a damaged dam.
I have seen a solitary report that Three Gorges sustained damage, but haven't seen any corroborating reports yet. Consider that unconfirmed at the moment.
As I noted above, if Three Gorges fails, the death toll from the quake itself will be insignificant compared to what could happen downstream.
