What have Abbas and Fatah accomplished? Since its inception in 1994, the Palestinian Authority (PA) has been ruled by Fatah, first under Yasser Arafat and now under Abbas. Abbas, the number two person in the PLO under Arafat, was a co-founder of the Fatah terrorist organization. Thus, he is partly responsible for decades of atrocities against innocent civilians, including the murder of 500 Israelis between 2000 and 2007. The Fatah movement's constitutional charter, similar to Hamas's founding document, still has 10 articles that call for Israel's destruction, approve use of terrorism against the country, oppose any political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and label Zionism as racism. Resolutions in both the U.S. House and Senate are now urging Abbas to rescind these articles.

If actions speak louder than words, then the PA leadership has also failed to deliver on any of its signed commitments under all the various, and still binding, peace agreements. Abbas has yet to make real and sustained efforts to end terrorism, jail terrorists or confiscate their illegal weapons.

More troubling, Abbas has done nothing about ending the incitement to hatred and murder against Jews and Americans that daily spews forth from PA institutions directly under his administrative and financial control: the PA's media, mosques, schools and youth camps. This 24/7 incitement has fomented an ideology of hate and a culture of violence, the focus of which is Israel, Jews in general, and the United States.

The "new car" smell that is most harmful is one that used to come in a spray can. Car detailers and car dealers would use it to give a not-new car that "new car" smell. It was banned ~5 years or so ago.

The assignment for Virginia Commonwealth University fashion students: design an abaya, an enveloping cloak worn by Muslim women, that is stylish yet acceptable in Arab countries.

The results: elaborately beaded designs, a flamenco-influenced abaya, a punk rock abaya — and perhaps a better understanding of cultural norms in the Persian Gulf nation of Qatar, where the university has had a campus for 10 years.

"We were trying to make a feeling of youth — but still be true to their culture," said Kendra Palin, a fashion design major who partnered with classmate Shelby Day to design an abaya with looped buttonholes, princess seams and a high waist. "Everything else had to be black, but the embellishment could be any color, and we used silver and blue."

YA

NGON, Myanmar (AP) - Another powerful storm headed toward Myanmar's cyclone-devastated delta, where so little aid has reached that the U.N. warned on Wednesday of a "second wave of deaths" among an estimated 2 million survivors.
The U.S. military's Joint Typhoon Warning Center said there is a good chance that "a significant tropical cyclone" will form within the next 24 hours and head across the Irrawaddy delta area.

The area was pulverized by Cyclone Nargis on May 3, leaving at least 34,273 dead and 27,838 missing, according to the government. The U.N. says the death toll could exceed 100,000. An estimated 2 million survivors of the storm are still in need of emergency aid. But U.N. agencies and other groups have been able to reach only 270,000 people so far.

In a sign that Myanmar may allow outside help, Dr. Thawat Sutharacha of Thailand's Public Health Ministry said Wednesday the junta has given permission to a Thai medical team to go to the cyclone-hit delta.

If the team is able to go as scheduled on Friday, it would be the first foreign aid group to work in the ravaged Irrawaddy delta.

As US President George W. Bush arrived in Israel on Wednesday, not everyone was happy to see him come.

In the Gaza Strip, the ruling Hamas organization called the Bush visit a "bad omen."

"No greetings to you, Bush, on our holy land," said Hamas strongman Mahmoud Zahar. "Your people will punish you one day."

At the Kalandiya military checkpoint next to Jerusalem, a few dozen Palestinians threw stones at police. The police said they responded with riot control tactics, and the force was seen firing tear gas at the crowd.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency has warned of "extremist structures" within the Left Party. A new report lists a number of left-wing extremist factions within the party, including the Communist Platform, the Marxist Forum and a pro-Cuba group.

Iran's intelligence minister said on Wednesday that those behind the bomb blast in a mosque that killed 14 people last month also planned to target a Russian consulate in the Islamic state, an Iranian news agency reported.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad accused the United States, Israel and Britain on Tuesday of being responsible for the blast in the southern city of Shiraz that also wounded 200 people.

Israel files official complaint with Egypt over Farouk Hosni's remarks, may thwart his appointment as UNESCO secretary-general

Itamar Eichner Published: 05.14.08, 14:25 / Israel News

Diplomatic tensions have arised between Israel and Egypt due to a harsh statement made recently by Egyptian Culture Minister Farouk Hosni. In a conference that took place in the Egyptian Parliament last week, the minister said that he “would burn Israeli books himself if found in Egyptian libraries.”

Israeli Ambassador to Cairo Shalom Cohen defined this statement in a classified report that he submitted to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Jerusalem as “harsh and especially blunt, in a way which makes it impossible for Israel and for the international community to continue a regular agenda with Egypt.”

In case anyone didn't hear... the Democrats in Congress were trying to force Bush's hand before his trip, in dealing with the KSA. As part of the high oil price politics, their game was to send a message to the KSA that unless KSA pumped more oil then a pending arms sale could be scuttled...

With that as background:

Russia eyes $4 bln arms contract with Saudis

MOSCOW, May 13 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport is preparing a $4 billion arms contract with Saudi Arabia, the Gazeta daily reported on Tuesday.
[...]
The arms contract with the Saudis could also boost Russia's admission to the World Trade Organization. During ongoing bilateral negotiations with Moscow, Riyadh demanded access to Russian hydrocarbon deposits and pipelines.

FYI, Russia during the past couple of years has often been the #1 oil (crude) producer, and #2 exporter, while KSA has been the #2 oil producer and #1 exporter. Closer cooperation between the two nations wrt oil would be interesting, to say the least....

Note to Congress: KSA pumps oil to make money for themselves but also to optimize their long term production. They aren't going to jump through hoops, and there are plenty of other sources for arms deals than the USA.

Iran and the Fearful Arabs

"...Thus the question is: How long will these Arab states continue to be afraid, after Beirut fell into the hands of the Iranians and Fouad Siniora's government continues to be held under siege in much the same way as the legislative Lebanese leadership? Moreover, the Palestinian cause is no longer under Arab control after Hamas has become a puppet in the hands of the Iranians and Syrians.

Confrontation is the only option that the Arabs have with Iran and the lesser degree of confrontation is to hold steadfast onto political positions without retreating or lagging behind through inaction. What they fear today will happen tomorrow since Iran is expanding in all the Arab states; it is critical for the Arabs to counteract the collapse of the Arab nation and prevent it from being ripped apart internally..."

..(IsraelNN.com) Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad told Iranians Wednesday that "throwing a birthday party for this [Zionist] regime is like having a birthday party for a dead person." His latest outburst against the Jewish state coincided with the arrival of American President George W. Bush to Israel.

"They [Israel] must know that the nations of the region hate this counterfeit regime," Ahmadinejad said in a speech in the northern province of Golestan. "And if there is the slightest chance, they will uproot this counterfeit regime."

I don't think it makes a damn what the Dems do - Bush has already publicly begged the Saudis for lower oil prices and been just as publicly rebuffed. They are not going to do anything now except humiliate him again.

The Dems are stupid though. Rather than go after arms deals, they should go after grain shipments. Saudi Arabia imports every last damned bite of food they consume and we still produce a huge chunk of the world food supply.

More than 50,000 people are dead, missing or buried under rubble after China's devastating earthquake, officials said Wednesday as the full horror of the disaster began to emerge.
Rescue teams who punched into the quake's stricken epicentre reported whole towns all but wiped off the map, spurring frantic efforts to bring emergency relief to the survivors.

Planes and military helicopters air-dropped supplies, 100 troops parachuted into a county that had been cut off, and rescuers in cities and towns across Sichuan province fought to pull the living and the dead from the debris.

Saudi Arabian importers have ordered customers of Danish medicines to boycott the products due to the reprinting of the Mohammed cartoons in February.
The fallout from the media’s reprinting of the Mohammed cartoons in February has not yet subsided in the Middle East, made apparent by yet another probable boycott of Danish products – this time medicines from Danish pharmaceutical companies, according to Saudi Gazette newspaper.
Saudi Arabian importers and retailers have ordered the nation’s hospitals and pharmacies to boycott all Danish drugs, e-mailing a list containing 41 medicines produced by companies such as Novo Nordisk, Lundbeck and Leo Pharma to those facilities and to the Saudi health ministry.
Dr. Abdul Moiz Shams, one of the physicians supporting the boycott, wrote to the Saudi Gazette that boycotting insulin was the most effective means of economically hurting the Danish economy.
’I would advise the world’s Muslims to consider just one product to boycott – insulin. It earns billions of dollars in profit for Denmark and is distributed all across the Gulf region,’ he said.
Who else produces insulin? Other pharmaceutical companies should stand firm and refuse to supply Saudi Arabia on the grounds that they are not proving to be a reliable customer and one with a dubious human rights record. I expect China will supply them, but with the quality of some Chinese drugs being questionable the Saudis might come to realise their mistake. One can hope

Droplet,

You state "it wouldn't bother me if both sides were obliterated in a huge white flash."

You advocate dual-genocide, ecologic destruction and nuclear annihilation, all because you're "fed up."

OK, thanks for your reasonable contributions, not only to this conversation, but to intelligent discourse in general.

"millions of Americans agree with me." Classic textbook response of paranoid schizophrenic onset.

Droplet, you've got bigger problems than what's going on in the Middle East. Get some help.

Nixon did that in 1973.

Hey Droplet:

I am a long time lgfer. Fully support the Israeli's state right to exist.

Once joked that we could offer a state for Israel to move to. Said we could offer Utah for example, could re-name it Jew-tah.

Nobody so much as said a word. (other than a few Mormons maybe who said, "HEY!".

No "white flashes", no death of millions of people...see, you can make your point without being so...so... icky.

Finally, millions of Americans support the Burmese junta's right to let their people starve. Millions of Americans respect N. Korea's and Iran's right to have nuclear weapons. Millions of American's are huge A**holes.

Obama's Muslims are organizing via Facebook. One such effort is a group titled "American Muslims for Obama."

It presently boasts 448 members (fairly large for a Facebook political-interest group).

One poster, a Hadeel Abed, imparts: "Insha Allah, only under an Obama Presidency will Palestine see liberation. Insha Allah, only under an Obama Presidency will we know self-determination. Insha Allah, only under an Obama Presidency will the blood of the Yahud flow like a torrent throughout the world."

But, he lives in a Red State. Alabama, he says. Why does this remind me of the lyrics to "Uneasy Rider?"

Former ambassador to Syria tells Arab newspaper, 'The resistance in Lebanon materialized following the Iranian revolution and later reached Palestine'

Hizbullah, Hamas and the Islamic Jihad are the Iranian revolution's legal sons, a former Iranian ambassador to Syria and one of Hizbullah's founders has said.

In an interview published Wednesday with the London-based Arabic-language newspaper al-Sharq al-Awsat, Mohamed Hassan Akhtari said that "the imam Khomeini and the Islamic Republic of Iran saw the Palestinian problem their own, and therefore set the global Jerusalem Day in the month of Ramadan in support of the Palestinian issue.

"As we all know, the Hamas movement and the Islamic Jihad were established after the Islamic revolution victory in Iran, inspired by the imam Khomeini and the resistance he led."

Good news so far.

Where I work I send out a daily trivia question. Usually something insipid, with multiple guess questions, like "What was the name of...." or "How many..." but today's question is easy enough. How many branches of the US government are there. Now my audience is atypical. I work for a company heavy on the Masters, Pharmacists, and at least Bachelors level side. (I work for CVS-Caremark). But still I never know what to expect. I send the question out each morning to about 50 people or so that ask to participate. And so far, of the 30 or so answers (and this time I did not provide multiple choice answers for people to pick from) only 1 of the 30 did not know the right answer. Maybe there is hope for the lay public?

If the droplet ever comes back, maybe he can address:
1. The need for the U.S. to support all civil societies/true democracies aroound the world, of which Israel is a prime example surrounded by authoritarian adversaries,
and...
2. The impossibility of remaining rich and isolated on our continent because other people in the world know we're here.
Feelings aside, he has little factual support.

You are a crazy country," Tutu, 76, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984, said in an interview with the Tribune. "You're a country that has I think some of the most generous people I've ever come across in the world."

But he chided Americans for getting "very, very upset" with the pastor of Sen. Barack Obama, noting that Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. "may have said more crudely what, actually, almost every African-American would have wanted to say. I mean that is how they feel in your country, that race ... is a very, very real issue."

"And I think on the whole you keep trying to pretend it isn't," he added, noting the issue will haunt Americans until there is a way to talk honestly about race, such as holding a reconciliation forum

Now, you take our pal Droplet, here. He made a couple of out-of-line statements, but rather than say something of substance, such as "this is why I think what I think," or "here is my reasoning," or something of the sort, he's busy backing and filling over his original cowpat.

From the OPm website
HOW FEDERAL JOBS ARE FILLED
Many Federal agencies fill their jobs like private industry by allowing applicants to contact the agency directly for job information and application processing. Most Federal agencies are responsible for their own hiring actions. Resumes are preferred when applying; however, the Optional Application for Federal Employment, OF 612, is also accepted. Also, most positions do not require a written test. While the process is similar to that in private industry, there are differences due to the laws, executive orders, and regulations that govern Federal employment

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. China's sorrow continues deepening as the death toll continues rising above 15,000, though it's likely to be several times that amount as tens of thousands are still buried in the rubble or remain missing.

Meanwhile, Syria sentences a blogger to three years in prison for "undermining the state."

A human rights group says a 24-year-old Syrian blogger has been convicted and sentenced to three years in prison on charges of undermining the prestige of the state and weakening national morale.

In a statement sent to The Associated Press on Wednesday, The National Organization for Human Rights in Syria condemned the verdict issued the day before as "outrageous" and called for Tarek Bayassi's immediate release.

The rights group says Bayassi's sentence was commuted to three years after an original sentence of six years. Bayassi was arrested last May in northwest Syria for surfing sites of Syrian opposition groups and posting comments online.

My neighbor has a 100+ lb, 11 month old Golden Retriever that stays in a crate most of the day and jumps on everybody it sees (or at least me, every time it sees me). Getting pretty annoying, I might add.

There's the problem. gah

Why do people get high energy dogs when they do not have the time to exercise them properly and give them the attention and the running space they need? And no training.

Don't get me started. I could be here bitchin all day.

My old vet (before I moved here) said that people food was okay, just nothing to spicy and no raw onions (avoid chocolate and grapes, as well, I'm told). So, I usually save the last bite for the pup...

My rules are basically: come when I call you, no begging when I or anybody else is eating, no jumping up on people, and no jumping on furniture at somebody else's house (she has free rein at my house).

We just inherited an 80 pound Rottie-mix about the same age that was crated most of the day. No crates here and she is getting used to things but it is not easy and my legs look like I have been beaten from trying to train her to the run outside.

I will remember that. Though knowing my girl as I do, I suspect she will be cleaning her own gun at the dining room table when the dude arrives on the scene. She brooks very little crap from anyone.

my daughter came up to my swim club last year and a guy i was talking to made a comment about her.I said that's my daughter dude,he felt very small after that.lol

Hehe. that's just what Little Winger said.

I was instructing the pup as to the requirements of the household (dogs eat dog food - people eat people food - we don't jump on the leather furniture). Little Winger took the pup aside and said "Don't sweat it. There ARE no requirements."

Congrats! What type of doggy do you think you have there?

I cannot believe I am responding to posts more than 200 posts behind. I doubt I'm even saying anything unusual.
