MSNBC Joins the Nakba Chorus

Thu, May 15, 2008 at 2:20:44 pm PDT

Still more insanely over the top “Nakba” propaganda from the mainstream media at MSNBC, by yet another Arab writer: As Israelis celebrate, Palestinians mourn.

This is how the media are almost universally spinning Israel’s 60th anniversary. It’s nauseating.

JERUSALEM – Women screaming and children trying to escape a village on fire.

These are just two of the images that two Palestinian sisters, Fatima and Zeinab Jaber, 65 and 71, live with from an event they witnessed 60 years ago. They are haunted, too, by the memory of their mother, Nuzah, who they recall crying as she rushed members of their family to safety.

And they are their last recollections of their home, the village of Deir Yassin, as it was being overrun and destroyed by armed Jewish militant groups.

It gets worse. You won’t believe how much worse.

UPDATE at 5/15/08 2:24:01 pm:

The truth about Deir Yassin.

UPDATE at 5/15/08 2:44:51 pm:

At Google News, there are currently 1,956 results in a search for Nakba.

UPDATE at 5/15/08 4:08:07 pm:

In the last 90 minutes, the number of “Nakba” articles found at Google News has more than doubled, to 4,611. Propaganda is flooding the newswires.

Campaign of terror
The massacre is considered by many historians to be part of a strategy to terrify the Palestinian populations enough so that they would leave their homes and land, thus enabling them to be occupied by Jews.

I don't even know what to say to this...

19 Diamond Bullet  Thu, May 15, 2008 2:29:40pm

From the update, stop me if any of this starts to sound familiar:

After the remaining Arabs feigned surrender and then fired on the Jewish troops, some Jews killed Arab soldiers and civilians indiscriminately. None of the sources specify how many women and children were killed (the Times report said it was about half the victims; their original casualty figure came from the Irgun source), but there were some among the casualties. Any intentional murder of children or women is completely unjustified. At least some of the women who were killed, however, became targets because of men who tried to disguise themselves as women. The Irgun commander reported, for example, that the attackers "found men dressed as women and therefore they began to shoot at women who did not hasten to go down to the place designated for gathering the prisoners."

Just some rectification of the outrageous lies about Deir Yassin that leftwing antisemites and their sheeple spread about this pre nationhood battle:

Lying about Deir Yassin
By Steven Plaut
FrontPageMagazine.com
This week is the anniversary of the events that took place in the Arab village of Deir Yassin in 1948. In recent years, Deir Yassin has been converted into a bludgeon by the Far Left, the Neonazi Right, and Israel-bashers in general. Deir Yassin is the ultimate "Man Bites Dog" news story supposedly based on the inversion of players. It is recited endlessly by the very same people who have nothing to say against a century of countless massacres of Jewish civilians by Arabs. The church in St. John's Wood in London is just one of many examples of outfits "commemorating" the "victims" of Deir Yassin this week.
Deir Yassin was a not-at-all innocent Arab village sitting near the only road into Jerusalem in 1948. In the previous December, the UN had voted to partition what was left of Madatory Palestine into two states, one a Jewish state and the other an Arab state to be named Palestine, of approximately equal sizes. The Jews of Israel accepted the plan, while the Arab states and the Palestinian Arab leadership rejected it. Had they accepted it, a Palestinian state would have arisen peacefully in 1948. In response to the UN resolution, Arabs launched attacks against Jews everywhere in the country and in particular placed the city of Jerusalem under siege. The Jewish population of Jerusalem was quite literally starving. The only road into the city passed through the area of Deir Yassin, and the Arab militiamen in the town were stopping all convoys from passing through. Since Israel had yet to be formally proclaimed, the only Jews doing the fighting were members of three poorly-armed militias. The main one was the Hagana, commanded by David Ben Gurion and the socialist Zionist party. There were two smaller ones operating independently under the command of the dissident "revisionist Zionist" movement, the Etsel and the Lehi.

Poorly-trained irregulars of the two latter militias were ordered to attack Deir Yassin to relieve the siege. They did so in ferocious hand-to-hand fighting, in which some Deir Yassin villagers were killed. The Bash-Israel lobby has always maintained that the villagers were "massacred" in cold blood, despite a distinct lack of evidence. Those who participated in the battle claim the villagers were killed when the Jewish militiamen fired into homes from which fire was directed at them. The village was successfully taken and the siege of Jerusalem was lifted. Large numbers of Jewish militiamen had been killed in the house-to-house battle for the village. Approximately 100 Arabs in the village died, a number that was later greatly inflated by anti-Jewish propagandists to 250.

Part of the problem was that the mainstream socialist Zionist parties themselves magnified the supposed misbehavior of the two opposition militias in order to discredit them in the coming political contest for control of the emerging Jewish state. This trend has been echoed in recent years, and Deir Yassin has become the "massacre of choice" for anti-Semites trying to prove the Jews are bloodthirsty barbarians. In part these have based their claims on a document by a Hagana officer, one Meir Peil, who was not actually present at the battle but surveyed the village AFTER the fighting was finished. Peil claimed he thought there had been looting and intentional killing of some villagers. The problem is that Peil is also a leftwing radical and not exactly a neutral source. Other less politicized sources tell a different tale. Even some Arab sources confirm that no massacre took place in Deir Yassin.

Some of the comments to this MSNBC piece are spot on:

"There is NO SUCH THING as a Palestinian! Media bias crap! They are Egyptians, Jordanians, Syrians, etc. Arabs who lived on the land AFTER it was taken from the Jews in the first place. Palestine is a knockoff of a Hebrew word for Philistine. Remember david and Goliath? Just ONE of the many different tribes in the region in and around 135 A.D. This article was written by a Muslim Arab if anyone would happen to look at the author. This issue is an excuse the Muslims use to attack the Jews. The Arabs use the Palestine/Israel issue to try and keep the focus away from their own atrocities. Muslims kill, rape, maim BEHEAD innicents all the time and then wail about crimes when someone retaliates against them. Muslims are responsible for more murders/deaths than the KKK, the Spanish Inquisition, the US death penalty, and the IRA conflict all combined! Cut the antisemitic crap and face the truth - islam is a scourge on the earth and will either conquer it or destroy it. Unless the world wakes up and stops it's spread. Will MSMBC dare to post this blog?

Second Part:

Meanwhile, a few years back the ZOA issued a new study, Deir Yassin History of a Lie, a 32-page analysis (with 156 footnotes) by ZOA National President Morton A. Klein. Among other things, the ZOA study shows that the original claim of 254 dead was not based on any actual body count. The number was invented by Mordechai Ra'anan, leader of the Jewish soldiers who fought in Deir Yassin. He later admitted that the figure was a deliberate exaggeration in order to undermine the morale of the Arab forces, which had launched a war against the Jews in Mandatory Palestine to prevent the establishment of Israel. Other eyewitnesses to the battle estimated that about 100 Arabs had died. Despite Ra'anan's admission, the figure 254 was circulated by Palestinian Arab leader Hussein Khalidi. His claims about Deir Yassin were the basis for an article in the New York Times claiming a massacre took place--an article that has been widely reprinted and cited as "proof" of the massacre throughout the past 57 years.

Meanwhile, there have been numerous exposes of the lies that have been invented surrounding the battle for Deir Yassin and these have largely discredited the Peil "eyewitness" report.

A massacre did take indeed take place, following the events in Deir Yassin, which had occurred on Friday morning April 9, 1948. On Monday morning, April 13, 1948, an Arab mob, chanting "Deir Yassin", massacred a bus convoy of Jewish doctors and nurses who were headed to Hadassah hospital on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem. Seventy-eight members of Hadassah's medical staff were murdered in cold blood. Only recently was it revealed that some of the Hadassah nurses had found refuge in the nearby compound of the British consul, only to be turned over to Arabs by the Brits, and the Arabs proceeded to slaughter them in "revenge" for what they thought had occurred at Deir Yassin.

Both sides used the symbol of "Remember Deir Yassin" in 1948 during the war. There were Jews who intimidated Arabs with the slogan and there were Arab commanders who rallied their populace with the same adage. Meanwhile, what has fanned the flames of Deir Yassin has been the United Nations decision to confine more than three million Palestinian Arabs to refugee camps, promising them the "right of return" to Arab villages that no longer exist.
In recent years a group of pro-Arab propagandists in the US have stared holding annual "memorials" for the "victims" of the
"massacre" in Deir Yassin. The late Edward Said had been a member and the group includes such people as anti-Semite Norman Finkelstein, Saudi-financed ex-congressman Paul Findlay, and PLO propagandist Hanan Ashwari. These are people who have never denounced Arab massacres of Jewish children (or unarmed women, teenagers or men), which massacres were committed not by poorly trained irregulars in the heat of a crucial battle, but by Islamofascist terrorists awash in money and under the direct personal command of the PLO.

When terrorists attacked America on 9/11,the MSM blamed United States foreign policy over the years as the culprit. When terrorists attack Israel, the MSM blames Israeli foreign policy.

When terrorists kill Americans, the MSM calls them "Freedom Fighters" or,at the very worst "insurgents",but never terrorists. When terrorists kill Israeli's the MSM calls them "Freedom Fighters" or "insurgents",but never terrorists.

When terrorists kill women and children with suicide bombs in Iraq, the number of people killed is not mentioned as a reason to denounce the murderous actions of the terrorists,it is mentioned as a reason for America to surrender in Iraq to the demands of the terrorists. When terrorists kill women and children with missiles fired into Israeli cities, the number of people killed is not mentioned as a reason to denounce the murderous actions of the terrorists,it is mentioned as a reason for Israel to surrender Her land to the terrorists and cave in to their demands.

Do I need to continue on with this or do you see the obvious pattern?

Refugee Problem Persists:

Today, according to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), at least 5 million Palestinians and their descendants are registered as refugees. The figure includes hundreds of thousands who became refugees as a result of the Six-Day War in 1967, when Israel occupied the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. As refugees, those living in other countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria, are not recognized as citizens and have few rights, despite living there for decades. In effect they are stateless unless and until a Palestinian state is created.

The fate of the Jaber family is typical of many Palestinians. They lived in Jordan for two years, then moved to Jericho and after five years moved to Jerusalem, when the sisters’ mother wanted to be close to what was once their home.

Many have given up hope of returning to the homes they lost in 1948; instead, they watch with bitterness and sadness the celebrations for Israel's 60 years of statehood, which they feel came at their expense.

"I feel ashamed to be a refugee," said Zeinab. "Three months ago we went to Deir Yassin; our house is used as a storage place for hospital workers. I want my family house back," she said.

And as the U.S. struggles to keep Israel and the Palestinian Authority committed to making an arrangement that will lead to the creation of a two-nation state, it is the plight of the refugees – most particularly, whether they should be allowed to return to their original homes or what is sufficient compensation – that still proves to be one of the biggest obstacles for a lasting peace.

"How can Israel celebrate when we still have this refugee problem?" said Fatima, who is the mother of 11 children."

You can't make this stuff up.

So we have Obama complaining about "false arguments" today, yet he fails to speak out on what is an obvious false argument - that the founding of Israel PRECLUDED the founding of a Palestinian state.

That is the story told, yet two states were established by the UN. One decided to try to get their Arab buddies together and destroy the other and ended getting gobbled up by the said "Arab buddies" in the process.

The real story is about Arabs screwing the Palestinians - not the Jews.

I truly believe that we (again) have a misunderstanding. It was never really my intent to make either "sniping" or "needling" remarks towards you. I fully respect any decisions you make regarding your site, LGF. I really did not mean anything more than what I have posted. Which is that you do not believe that certain things should be posted at your site. It is not my intention to make "sniping" or "needling" remarks, and thus when I realized that you felt that I was, I only asked that you explain to me what you interpreted as such, so that I could do my best not to continue to do that on your site.

It is unfortunate that we are having so much trouble understanding eachother on this issue. It is not, and was not, my desire to cause a flare up.

I now realize I must be wrong, but it was my understanding that throughout my time on LGF, individuals were told specifically not to mention, or advocate anything by Rabbi Meir Kahane (including his books) as groups founded by him are on the U.S. Terrorist List, and that type of advocacy (rightfully so!) would not be tolerated on LGF, and doing so would result in non-negotiable banning.

In hindsight, I now realize and should add, that since I believed this to be true, I should have just let the whole thing alone altogether. But, I didn't. For that I sincerely appologize.

McCain's response to Obama's hissy fit:

“I think Barack Obama needs to sit down and explain why he wants to talk with a man who is the head of a government that is a state sponsor of terror, that is responsible for the killing of brave young Americans, who wants to wipe Israel off the map, denies the Holocaust. That is what I think that Senator Obama ought to explain to the American people,” he said while on a bus to the airport.

“It is a serious error on the part of Senator Obama that shows naivet%uFFFD and inexperience and lack of judgment to say that he wants to sit down across the table from an individual who leads a country who says that Israel is a stinking corpse, that is dedicated to the extinction of Israel. My question is what does he want to talk about?”

This is an incomplete quote loppyd. I heard the entire comment. Matter of fact, it looks completely rewritten. Let me see if I can find the video of it.

Oh, now I see. This isn't just about a book, is it?

And that's right, I'm not going to allow support for the terrorist group Kach or their founder Kahane to be expressed here, for the reasons you listed.

188 Maine's Michael  Thu, May 15, 2008 3:39:36pm

The Jews are, for all intents and purposes, the aboriginal people of the littel patch of earth bordering the eastern Mediteranean called Israel.

I have long felt this, and said this.

I was very gratified to see Irwin Cotler, former Minister of Justice for Canada and one of her most principled politicians, make this case in the JPOST yesterday.

Here is the link.

The gathering storm, and beyond

Israel, then, is the aboriginal homeland of the Jewish people across space and time. It is not just a homeland for the Jewish people, a place of refuge, asylum and protection. It is the homeland of the Jewish people, wherever and whenever it may be; and its birth certificate originates in its inception as a First Nation, and not simply, however important, in its United Nations international birth certificate.

The State of Israel, then, as a political and juridical entity, overlaps with the "aboriginal Jewish homeland"; it is, in international legal terms, a successor state to the biblical, or aboriginal, Jewish kingdoms. But that aboriginal homeland is also claimed by another people, the Palestinian/Arab people, who see it as their place and patrimony.

Much more. Please read it.

Without going into Kahane himself, he was murdered by the same group responsible for the 1st world trade center bombing. Materials gathered in the investigation of his murder lead directly to those responsible for that blast, Unfortunately the police, for a variety of reasons, did not bother to translate most of the gathered papers till AFTER that 1st world trade center blast.

The only reason I didn't at that time is because I thought that if I had said "Hey 'Mandymanners' you should read "They Must Go!" by Kahane" its got a great history of how Jews were treated by the British during the Mandate Period", it would have fallen under "advocacy of Kahane" (which it was not intended to do) and I would have been banned.

While MSNBC lobs big wet ones for the Palestinians over the supposed Naqba (which actually occured years earlier when France and Britain carved up the Ottoman empire much to the chagrin of the Syrians who thought everything should belong to them - and not much has changed since), not much ink about how the Arabs rioted in 1929 in Hebron, killing all the Jews they could get their hands on.

Hebron has had a continual Jewish presence since antiquity.

And yet, the massacre survivors were ultimately displaced and never compensated for their losses.

Where's that in all this petulant wailing about the Palestinians, who continue murdering and plotting to murder Israelis to this very day.

Oddly enough, until a couple of years ago the PA had an archive of old photos of Israel available online, many of Jerusalem. Well over 1/3 of those photos (dated from about 1870 or so through the early 30s) contained Jews. Jews at the Wailing Wall. And there were also pictures of the Dome of the Rock. Here is the correct bit of McCain's comment about Obama's desire to talk to Ahmadinnerjacket -

"What does he want to talk about with ahmandinejab who called Israel a stinking corpse, who wants to wipe Israel off the map. . . ."

Fox has rewritten the quotation in their news article.

Re. # 227. True, there are questions there, but for an overall idea of sequence and rough population, and what the British were doing, I have yet to find a book that's as good for a "beginner," yet still has academic credentials.

Yes. i agree.

This "third most sacred site in all of islam" was literally deserted and in ruins in every single picture.

Here's an archive of historic photos of the Holy Land, 1831-1910

How about "The Rape of Palastine" by Ziff written in 1938.

It's not very well written. But it is very fascinating and informative. Really shows how the British messed things up in a major way for Israel.

re: #226 Alouette

When at first they can't get anywhere on settlements, the fallback position is right of return.

Both are integral part of the Palestinian terrorist/appeaser agitprop.

Again, the issue of settlements can be rebutted with the following:

Gaza was unilaterally handed to the Palestinians in 2005. Israel has not occupied it since - and yet the Palestinians have seen fit not to create a livable country or viable economy, but to launch a rocket war against Israel with the express purpose of killing and maiming as many Israelis as possible all while forcing still more concessions and withdrawals.

Israel handed civil administrative control to the PA over most of the West Bank, and what has the PA done? Used those areas for terror ops as well.

They are not partners in peace, but seek Israel in pieces.

246 yochanan  Thu, May 15, 2008 4:16:04pm

I think Rabbi Kahanne understood the Arab hate esp the diff. between hamassholes and the more cleaver ones like abass. that being said does not mean you have to agree with his solution. there is a world of a difference between believing there is a peace process and saying it will fail and supporting Kach positions in total. When I was young i was involved with Kahanne j.d.l. mainly because of there demo's in suport of soviet Jews. When I met him I figured out he wanted to be King of Israel and did not support the idea of Israeli democracy. At that point I figured out there were other ways I could support Israel and that there were other activist org. and or Jewish groups supporting Israel.

If you were never in power and not likely to get this power you really never have to worry about what it takes to be a gov't.

So, according to MSNBC and the rest of the MSM, the 60th anniversary of Israel's independence is not an occasion to celebrate Israel's accomplishments, or remember the Holocaust, or mourn all the Israelis who have been lost to terrorism, or to thank Israel for their steadfast support of the United States.

Instead, it's a time to trot out Palestinian anti-Jewish propaganda, and to paint a liberal democracy with the best human-rights record in the region as a monster.

Evil is good.

Wrong is right.

Down is up.

ON APRIL 9, 1953, the Jordanian daily al-Urdun quoted a refugee, Yunes Ahmed Assad, formerly of Deir Yassin, as saying: "For the flight and fall of the other villages, it is our leaders who are responsible, because of the dissemination of rumours exaggerating Jewish crimes and describing them as atrocities in order to inflame the Arabs ... they instilled fear and terror into the hearts of the Arabs of Palestine until they fled, leaving their homes and property to the enemy."

CNN is also in full propaganda mode. They have a special nakba report featuring all the Palestinian propaganda talking points and tricks. Black balloons. Old rusty key held by an old man waiting to return to his stolen home. Siren (shamelessly ripped off Israel memorial days; nice touch that). Marching on wrecks of an old Arab village. You name it, all there.
Historical facts are "Israeli narrative" (the words of the reporter) now while Palestinian lies, exaggeration and inversion are presented without reservation. The reporter empathetically observes the tragedy of "millions still waiting to return after 60 years" as if it's the logical and realistic course of action. The anchor woman introduces the report using the word catastrophe neutrally without attribution (no "so-called", "what they claim.." etc.)

265 lazypadawan  Thu, May 15, 2008 6:12:21pm

Disgusting. The left sees Israel the same as it sees the U.S.: a bulwark of alleged Western imperialism and racism. This is why it blames Israel for everything and the Palestinians for nothing.

No wonder the Palestinians think Israel's days are numbered. When the little Satan is out of the way, the Great Satan (us) is next.

266 opinionated  Thu, May 15, 2008 6:53:54pm

More nakba

Israel protests UN chief Ban Ki-Moon's use of term 'nakba'

The Israeli mission to the United Nations is seeking clarifications after an official communique released by Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's bureau made specific reference to the word "nakba," according to a report broadcast on Israel Radio early Friday morning.

The report said the UN chief telephoned Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to express his solidarity with the Palestinians on the day they mark the "nakba," the Arabic word meaning "catastrophe" that is used in reference to the founding of the state of Israel.

You'd think the Leftist MSM would LOVE Israel

But Jews are criminals for the left-wing anti-Semites not because they do something wrong, but because they are Jews.

270 norar  Thu, May 15, 2008 11:37:18pm

Just Googled 'Nakba' and got "about 471,000" and 'nakba' gave "about 500,000" results.

I fail to see how Israeli existance is a catastrophe for the Palestinians. If anything it is Palestinian birthday as well. If nor for Israel there would be no such thing as Palestinians. There would be only Syrians, Jordanians and Egyptians.

More correctly 1967 is Palestinian birthday, when they stopped being Egyptians and Jordanians and became "Palestinians", though there is no letter 'P' in Arabic. My Syrian aquitance explained me years ago that, if not for Israel, Syrians and Egyptians would forever be in each other throats fighting for the territory each think belongs to them, i.e. what is now Israel, Judea, Samaria and Gaza.
