Huckabee's Idiotic NRA 'Joke'

Fri, May 16, 2008 at 2:57:01 pm PDT

Possibly the stupidest, most tone-deaf remark ever made by a politician (I know, it’s a crowded field), as Mike Huckabee makes a joke about someone pointing a gun at Barack Obama—in a speech to the NRA: “Somebody aimed a gun at him...”

No, he never did. The only thing I ever heard substantially proffered on his account was the fact that he is "Southern." I have never understood why people seem to believe that a Southerner needs to be on a presidential ticket in order to win. Bush/Cheney didn't go that route, and nor did Bush/Quail or Reagan/Bush. To be clear: I don't consider Texas to be a "Southern" state.

55 really grumpy big dog Johnson  5/16/08 3:10:51 pm reply quote

As I said on the previous thread, his off-the-cuff remark was terribly ill-timed and a bad mistake. But I do not think for one instant that there was any veiled threat to it as all.

His "pointed a gun" comment I truly believe was an oblique reference to Bush's speech in Israel and Obama's kneejerk response. Others may disagree with that assessment, but this doesn't strike me as a statement that Huckabee would say, words said to deliver a veiled threat.

But the dems will make big hay about it because it deflects from the smashing that McCain put on him in his rebuttal of Obama's ascerbic response to an address that wasn't even clearly directed at him.

And from that point of view, it was a very unfortunate moment.

That being said, I think McCain's best chance of winning is to bring someone on board who can cement the Reagan Democrats. You can't joke about the assassination of presidential candidates. You can't. It's illegal and will get an average citizen a visit from the secret service. You also can't joke about bombs in airports. Those are the rules and everybody knows that. On the blog. I've got a number of statements on the thread from the other day, and a couple in the "Seattle Times" thread two threads down.

Some have gotten updings, some not, which is not important. Problem is that there are several angles from which the issue needs to be discussed, none of which are religious or "protect traditional marriage"--and people seem unable to be able to get out of their ruts when discussing the topic, and are too avid to see if their position is supported. So the actual issues get sloughed.

It's sad, really.

Everybody got the chance to campaign and to make their case to the voters. Everybody got to choose. They did not choose Romney. Fair and square. Time to move on.

Yeah, but lots of Democrats crossed over in open primary state to hang us with McCain.

Not to mention the coverage certain candidates received from our media betters. That 'selected versus elected' thingy.

How about a protestor outside of the Dem convention dressed like a waffle, carrying a sign , 'Hey Barry Eat Me"

That was a really, really moronic comment. That 'joke' went over like a lead balloon.

I'm struggling and I can't see where or why he thought that WOULD be funny. Moronic comment indeed.

Huckabee got into the race well after Romney. Huckabee had also previously appeared as a keynote speaker at an anti-Mormon convention held in Salt Lake City - then pretended he knew nothing about the LDS faith. Slime.

This latest display of RCI from Huckabee is just further proof (in a long list of proofs) that the man is not White House material. Never has been, likely never will be.

And Republicans did the very same thing to keep Hillary in the race.

Right, but the Dems are still getting their dream candidate & we get McCain

Way to go Huckabee. Time to pack your bags and head back to Arkansas Mikey.

Don't let the screen door hit ya where the good lord split ya!

Which is why open primaries are wrong on the face of it. Pick a party, then vote for it in a primary/election.

My NY may be insane in many ways, but it is a closed primary state.

Fixed for ya.

I'll have to look up those posts. Interesting that you should bring that up. Two male gay friends of mine, who have been together for nearly 15 years, just got word today that the 2 year old special needs child they have been fostering, may soon be able to become their adopted son for good. I am so happy for them. They are wonderful people - and you should see them with this toddler. It's amazing. They are all googly over this child. :)

Interestingly, they do not support gay marriage.

Though I sometimes find her amusing, this is like Ann Coulter calling John Edwards a "faggot".
Some people play too nice with the other side. (McCain, usually, but most elected Republicans as well.)
Some people are just idiots.

There's a large middle ground, of cogent and constant arguement. Get to it, and stay there!
