Actually, I doubt it was written that way though the innuendo was certainly there. Lots of double entendre stuff during the era. That is how we all heard it at the time. Really fun. Yes, I am that old.

Same here, at about 1:46 or so, it is amazing. I don't play an instrument, so someone playing like this is just mind boggling to me. :) My son plays but he's just turned 18, not quite in this guy's league yet. lol

45 zombie  Fri, May 16, 2008 5:54:21pm
Tommy Emmanuel is some kind of freak of nature.

Dang, he certainly can play the guitar! I see the definite influence of Joseph Spence in there -- playing the bass line and the treble melody simultaneously, and slapping the guitar3 for the drum parts -- one-man-band style, which Spence sorta invented.

But upon watching the whole video:

Tommy Emmanuel may be some kind of freak of nature, but Paul McCartney and John Lennon are just basically deities. Their songwriting skills transcended "talent" and created a new category for human ability that describes only them. Their tunes and chord changes just never get old, never fail to thrill.

Thank you, Charles. First time I've ever been impressed by a Beatles cover.

Shar- When I was in the Navy stationed in San Diego, we'd take the trolley down to San Ysidro, walk across the border to the tourist trap that is Av. Revolucion. There was a storefront bar that was open-air (no wondows), and they always had a Beatles cover band that played all the songs in spanish, and were they great! Plus beers (Tecate, Dos Equis, Sol, etc.) were 3 for $2, and shots of tequila were 50 cents. For $5 we'd get hammered and entertained!

55 reno911  Fri, May 16, 2008 5:59:55pm

Good stuff Charles. The way Tommy attacks, he better tune in the middle of the song, otherwise he would be out of tune for the rest of the song.

I'm still wondering how that jam would sound with Tommy playing a semi-hollow Telecaster (or ASAT if you like G&Ls) through the clean channel of a good tube amp...shit...run it through the dirty channel with the gain way up...probably sound killer no matter how.

Currently at Google News, the top 20 US news aggregations make no mention of McCain's rebuttal of Obama's kneejerk comments today. Not one of them.

But of course, the Obama scathing of the GOP for lies and fear-mongering is the #1 news story, both in combined news, and US news.

Oh, and the Huckabee gaffe is being squashed by Google News. Apparently they don't want it to clutter Obama's "brilliant" attack on the party of the bushitler.

/obviously, they're not there yet

97 Sharmuta  Fri, May 16, 2008 6:29:53pm

re: #92 song_and_dance_man

The Beatles defined many genres of music and whole groups of musicians made their sound from individual songs. Not that they innovated it all, but they took what they heard and expanded the sound to another level.

The Beatles are and were the greatest pop group in our generation.

/sorry Celine fans

Funny you should bring that up. I was just thinking of how George's infatuation with Indian music led the band to experimenting with the sitar- the first time they used it was for Norwegian Wood, when the other George (Martin) felt the song needed something more. They and Martin certainly weren't afraid to try something new, and the music world was enriched for it.

re: #88 The Shadow Do

I'm with ya dog. All this means in this election is that conservatives and others who give a rip about America will need to find one or two nails and then just pound them. And pound them. And pound them. And pound them.....

This present manufactured controversy may well determine the election. Is The Obama an appeaser or not? The GOP needs to grab this one by the heel and not let go, just like a pack of hounds. Bring this bastard to bay say I.

Obama operatives were quipped about his comments today and said that they thought that his statements linking Bush and McCain were worth more than millions of dollars of ads and three months of campaigning. Since they own the MSM press monopoly, it's hard to argue with that statement AND have your voice heard.

It's time to take off the gloves, and get this bloody bareknuckle fight under way. Obama's a lightweight, and that will be revealed in the pummeling he's about to receive.

Thanks I have never heard of him. Very nice. Bob Marley-ish...

Can't believe you haven't heard of Nasio Fontaine. Few have, to be sure. But I figured you'd have heard of him.

Sometimes, the best things in life are impromptu. Right now, my wife is upstairs playing "The Man That Got Away" on the piano. I am spoiled rotten.

113 bosforus  Fri, May 16, 2008 6:46:08pm

Reminds me that last time Charles put up a video of Emmanuel there was some commenting about his pinky resting on the guitar. Then I discovered Wes Montgomery who plays only with his thumb.

You better hope she's not actually thinking about the man that got away. :)

So here is a thread to confound the Carnegie Melon researchers.

In it is a large part of the secret of how this community works.

re: #87 Syrah

Here is one that I first heard aa few years ago from a clip posted by Charles.

The Mighty IZ.

I clicked on that - I've never heard of that guy, he's got a voice from heaven! (I clap on 1 and 3, but I know and envy true talent when I hear it)

A voice from heaven. That pretty much is it.

OK, I'm REALLY gonna throw my guitars away, now... As if Jerry Douglas and the late stevie Ray Vaughn were'nt enough, now this guy! Anyone want to buy a Martin SP-JSC real cheap?

126 guitarguy  Sat, May 17, 2008 10:06:55am

Here's some more stuff that will make us guitarists weep:

'Avalon', as played by John Jorgenson Quintet with Tommy Emmanuel
Tommy's picking style is so percussive...a right-hand of doom!
John and Tommy 'noodle around' before launching it at 2:08

Tommy playing 'Classical Gas'.............with some 'Ventures' thrown in for good measure.

Tommy demonstrates his harmonic technique backstage......his guitar sounds like a harp!

127 guitarguy  Sat, May 17, 2008 10:13:47am

.....and if you're a fan of great acoustic guitar, you have to check out the numerous 'gypsy jazz' vids on Youtube.

Like this one...

.....and this one...

re: #127 guitarguy
Thanks alot! (Really)
only a little sarc here...
I really am amazed at his work and love his style.
My style (such that it exists) is a hybrid finger style, thumb plucking combination... but this guy..sheesh!
And to add insult to injury, I love to pull out the real early Beatles tunes...

129 guitarguy  Sat, May 17, 2008 10:38:03am

.............just one more (I promise!)....

I've watched this vid so many times I've lost count.
And each time I just sit there shaking my head in disbelief........the tune is 'Que Alegria"....

130 lanmaster  Mon, May 19, 2008 8:22:16am

Wow!

Definitely a freak of nature.

LOVE IT!
