A pre-emptive apology for killing the thread as I'm wont to do sometimes.

OK....any lizards here purchase stocks through that company's direct purchase program? If so, how did that work out for them?

I found out rather belatedly that several of the companies I've been tracking for the past few months do in fact offer direct stock purchases to the general public, eliminating the need for a broker. I don't have alot of $$$ to work with, so that method seemed better suited to me than going through a brokerage (at least until I'm interested enough in a stock that doesn't offer a direct purchase plan).

Also, is there any truth to the 'Commodities Bubble' rumor? The dot.com bubble was one thing, but I just can't see people not needing oil, copper, wheat, coal to the point where those commodities would bottom out.....

My post was also comment #49- Tim Wakefield wears #49 and is starting for the Red Sox tomorrow....could this be an omen?

Two WS Championsips later, I still think the Red Sox nation is the most superstitious fan base out there

56k a house. Mind you that's no interest and they have to meet an income requirement so they can pay for electricity and water, but...that's a far cry from free. Really good program.

Even with the lower fees, it still adds up....especially when they require you to trade X amount of times each month or the fees go up. I'm just looking for a brokerage that won't charge me for not trading a stock....

And 'direct' is something of a misnomer, since a broker is still involved. The company just pays whatever fee there is on the purchase....

All you old-timer classic rock types don't realize how lame your music sounds to sober people. ;)

Seriously, there are tons of songs from the 70s that go on and on and on with lame solos and long stretches of meaningless playing, and I realized one day that they were like that because the audience (and probably the musicians) were all high...

On oil... currently there is sufficient supply of low quality crude on the market, but the buyers (e.g., refineries) prefer not to buy it.

E.g. Iran has (supposedly, there were news reports this week on Bloomberg, for example) about 20 million barrels currently floating in VLCCs but no buyers (the US companies are not allowed to buy, and the usual buyers from Japan, South Korea etc currently are not predisposed to buy it probably because the market in the US is rebelling against the rising gasoline prices.)

The so called "crack spread" is, according to reports, really squeezing the refiners.

KSA supposedly has the same problem with their spare capacity - it is mostly very low quality oil and they have a hard time finding buyers.

Later on this year the Thunderhorse platform in the GoM is supposedly finally going to come on line, which when ramped up should bring about 250,000 of decent quality oil onto the US market.

Anyway, you can search the newswires and get links to the above stories and more...

My take on all of this is that yes, there is reason for oil prices to fall (very slightly curbed demand in the US, adequate low quality oil supply, additional supplies coming online later in the year.)

I am not an oil analyst and don't play one on the internet, but this note is just to say that when you hear an analyst say that oil will come down later in the year that it makes sense.

Food prices on the other hand....

I agree that market forces will bring the price of oil back down, as the $50 barrel oil consumption rates are not feasible at $120 barrel oil.

BUT the Fed had better not move to bail out the oil speculators whoever they are when the bottom falls out. Thats my fear. That the investors who get stuck with $125 per barrel futures when the glut happens and prices crash will go begging to the US Government for a bailout.

It always seems to work like that. The speculators pocket the cash when prices go up, but go begging for a bailout when prices fall. And they usually get one. Fuck em. Gamble with your own chips.

Saw that one coming during the 'Ethanol Boom'....not that I really had the funds to act on that. Sure...fuel from corn or sugarcane sounds nifty and dandy, but what happens when it's the same stuff you're using to feed livestock and dairy cows?

Something I didn't anticipate was how this would affect the railways. Since ethanol can't be transported via pipeline (at least right now) the most efficient way to transport it is via dedicated unit trains on class one carriers in the Midwest like Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Union Pacific or Canadian Pacific. And this is coming from someone who likes to think he keeps pretty good track of railways in general...
