Sat, May 17, 2008 at 3:58:22 pm PDT

I'm glad it wasn't a stroke, and I hope he recovers quickly and completely.

Then takes the hint to retire -- I'll happily pay taxes for him to do nothing!

Seizures are scary. I hate to see that happening to anyone.

5 gop_patriot  Sat, May 17, 2008 4:03:04pm

Well I wish him a full recovery, glad it wasn't a stroke, and hope they find out what caused his seizure.

The comments section of this CBS News site is a real cesspool.

You aren't kidding, ewww. From both sides. I am fascinated though, on how people can twist a comment on an article about a democrat senator's seizure and subsequent hospitalization into a diatribe about President Bush and Iraq. Boggles the mind.

6 Catttt  Sat, May 17, 2008 4:03:52pm

Glad it was not a stroke - but seizures are scary. My daddy had one.

Hope they figure out what it was.

Still of course wouldn't vote for him (if I lived in Moscow on the Charles).

All politics aside , I am glad that Teddy did not have a stroke & I wish him a full recovery.
I was hoping that we would be kicking Olbermann around more .
Oh well.

This is what I posted in the earlier thread, and I think it's a good idea to repost it now that we're getting the late afternoon crowd.

I hope everyone realizes that I will not tolerate any mean-spirited comments in this thread. I know most lizards are better people than that, but unfortunately there are always one or two who can't restrain themselves. Consider this a warning -- be respectful here, or you're very likely to lose your account.

I wish him well and hope he has a full recovery.

I disagree with him on almost everything politically, but he's still a human being who has a family.
We can disagree and still be civil.

I don't want to be banned from LGF. I was banned from the official "RUSH" (the band, not the guy) website for saying Neil Peart wasn't the best drummer in the world, although he is one of my favorites. I was banned from a lot of sites back in the day.

So, in response to this news about a Kennedy, no comment. ;)

For some reason this song came to mind:

I am no fan of the Senator's politics, but I will always be grateful to the Kennedy family for their monumental work in regards to Special Olympics. My late brother benefited emotionally and physically from these competitions. When he passed away, we buried him with his Special Olympic swimming medals. He was very proud of them.

We have videos of him losing his swimming trunks in a competition, but that's another story .....

You are the Lizard King.

Free Republic is a sore spot with me. I created an account so I could tout Zombietime in an annual award a couple of years ago (she won, so thank you freepers) that the lefties were trying to steal from her. I hardly ever posted there after that, but one day when I tried to log in, I'd been banned. No clue why. I e-mailed and asked - never got an answer. Here, if a body is banned, a body knows damn good and well why.

No, you're not in error. And the report function can also be used to bring something good or newsworthy to their attention as well, it doesn't always have to be about a negative.

But my #29 was meant to build on what you were saying about not letting folks turn this thread into a kos/huff type cesspool. It was not meant in anyway as a dig at you.

Those comments are amazingly awful. It doesn't look like they have any moderators at all.

It is odd, because they clearly have TOS - here is an excerpt:

There’s legal language nearby. Here's the plain English: no libel, slander, no lying, no fabricating, no swearing at all, no words that teenagers use a lot that some people think aren't swearing but we do, no insulting groups or individuals, no ethnic slurs and/or epithets, no religious bigotry, no threats of any kind, no bathroom humor, no comparing anyone to Hitler, Stalin or Pol Pot. We expect heated, robust debate, but comments should be polite and civil. We consider this to be public space so behave and write accordingly.

Charles, maybe CBS doesn't take the internet side of the news department seriously yet. It's curious that CBS News doesn't seem to care that their comments sections are often full of extremely hateful stuff. Possibly even worse than Kos or DU.

Don't they think that might be a turnoff to people reading their serious news articles?

I don't get it.

I've thought you should add a 'comment' box that pops up when clicking "report", so the reporting party can point out why.. just a sentence or two to indicate why it's being reported..

I too disagreed with Senator Kennedy on political issues, but do wish him a full, speedy recovery.
Seizures are no joke; I suffered two in the space of one hour for simply stopping a prescription medicine (valium) I had been given when I broke my ribs several years ago. Went from 50 mgs a day to 0 simply because I didn't see the need for valium cause I wasn't feeling anxious.
Wonder if Senator Kennedy unwittingly did something similar, medically speaking? If so, then I think the hope for his full recovery is high.
Again, I do wish him a speedy and complete recovery from the seizure(s) that he suffered. They are very scary things to go through.

Sad thing is that Teddy is the only one of the four male Kennedy siblings to live past his mid-40's. His sister Kathleen didn't even make it to 30, and I believe Pat passed away a few years ago... I know Eunice is still living - are Jean and Rosemary, also?

I just bought a Gateway P-6860FX.

Bluetooth!
Gaming!
Webcam!
320GB!
Nvidia, Intel!
Stuff!
Big screen!

I took in my regular comp for repairs, and I had already decided to buy a laptop. Well, my hard drive may be in trouble, so the laptop will be handy. I'm also getting a terabyte of HD storage - everything will automatically back up on it.

I'm kind of friendly - I ended up getting the head geek of the Geek Squad (Becky) and the head of the computer sales department (Kim) helping me. Very nice. I was going to get a Toshiba, but they didn't have the gaming comp Becky wanted to show me (apparently Toshiba is in the process of upgrading it), and this Gateway is better than the Sony Vaio comp I was thinking about, and cheaper.

Where I live, about one third of the people are Russian immigrants. Russians yell a lot. At first, I thought they were fighting, but they're just loud. They are, let me say, terrific people - friendly, very polite (the children too), straight forward. And loud.

I was just kidding - they're probably yelling "What's for dinner!" or "How was your day!" :D

I went to grad school with a Russian. I'll never forget the time that he bitched about going to his daughter's school and they had the kids "singing songs!"

As a parent I had no argument against that one.

I've always preferred to use the more comical "Rick with a silent P".

Ah, but then YOU understand the power of the word. In the two instances that happened, the young men really did not know it meant anything other than "jerk."

In the most recent case, the student wrote the word to describe Friar Lawrence in Romeo and Juliet. I was shocked, but since it was in his journal, I just said, "I'm surprised you used such a vulgar word." He said, in true innocence, "What's so bad about 'pr*ck'?"

I told him (without hyperventilating, I'm proud to say) that he's have to look it up himself but that he shouldn't use words whose meanings he doesn't know.

I've never seen a teenager run for a dictionary so quickly. His faced was fuchsia, and he apologized.

A soldier used the Quran -- Islam's holy book -- for target practice, forcing the chief U.S. commander in Baghdad to issue a formal apology on Saturday.

"I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Hammond said to tribal leaders and others at the apology ceremony. "In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers."

Another military official kissed a Quran and presented is as "a humble gift" to the tribal leaders.

A military investigation found the shooter guilty and relieved him of duty; he will be redeployed to the United States for reassignment away from the 1st Brigade of the 4th Infantry Division, a U.S. official said.

"The actions of one soldier were nothing more than criminal behavior," Hammond said. "I've come to this land to protect you, to support you -- not to harm you -- and the behavior of this soldier was nothing short of wrong and unacceptable."

I agree that it was stupid and was bound to cause trouble between the US and the locals- but to call it 'criminal' is ridiculous. Unless he meant it was a real criminal law there, where it took place. Still... UGH

"The actions of one soldier were nothing more than criminal behavior," Hammond said. "I've come to this land to protect you, to support you -- not to harm you -- and the behavior of this soldier was nothing short of wrong and unacceptable."

After stating the above, Hammond was heard to say: "Dang! Ten out of ten. He knocked the "h" out of Mo."

I got interested in Yiddish in junior high and read a lot about it. I blame Leo Rosten. :D

I had a Jewish BF about 10 years ago who was really freaked out when he realized not only did I know some Yiddish - I knew some Hungarian (his dad is Hungarian, and a Holocaust survivor), courtesy of a Hungarian Romany guy I knew years ago. No one knows Hungarian, except Hungarians, so that threw him. Hee hee hee.

I only know two phrases in Czech (my grandfather's heritage; his grandfather immigrated in 1880), neither of which I can spell. One sounds like "thu-da-la" and means "dummy, bonehead, etc." The other is "Jesus Christ," only used as a kind of prayer in truly exasperating situations. And it sounded really cool.

I once used it in high school in a very stressful situation. Another student turned, glared at me, and said, "That's not a nice thing to say." She was the only other person I ever encountered who knew the term. (I hastily apologized and explained that I wasn't swearing, really!)

Copies of the pictures of the Quran obtained by CNN show multiple bullet holes and an expletive scrawled on one of its pages.

CNN has an interesting dilemma here. The pictures of the desecrated Koran are important to the story, but CNN has chosen not to make them part of the report (at least online). Obviously they are afraid that showing a desecrated Koran will anger muslims, so in spite of CNN's leftist urge to bash the troops, they've chosen not to in deference to the one thing that gives them enough pause to self-censor - angry muslims.

Seizures are never good for whatever their cause. Most often it is mechanical damage to the brain from something, but as you point out chemical exposure long term will cause them too. If its chemical exposure as is likely in his case, it may or may not be reversible. It could also be a very delayed onset of stuff from his plane accident along with chemical exposure. In any event, I hope they get him straightened out. In the meanwhile a bit of Librium would probably not be a bad idea.

OK, you're asking, so here's my opinion. Remember, I'm the Victorian lizard who still wears a hat to church.

1. Telling guests to give money is tacky, for whatever reason. or occasion. Registering for gifts is okay because a wish list just gives ideas--it's not a demand.

2. If a guest chooses to give money, that's fine, but it's got to be the guest's idea.

3. The couple needs to get used to living within the means their incomes dictate. They are not a charity, and your gift is not tax deductible. Of course their parents and close family might choose to make such a significant gift, but to expect anyone else to finance their house is, well, tacky.

4. The purpose of a wedding gift is to help a couple establish their household, not their house.

I remember reading about the cholera outbreak in London in 1854. At the time, people thought cholera was caused by a miasma. Dr. John Snow brilliantly traced it to the Broad Street pump, which they determined was contaminated with waste water from. Many people lived because of Dr. Snow. It's just beyond belief that people in this day and age are being treated the way Burma is treating its people.

OK, I have recommended these two films before, and was rather disappointed at the responses, but I will recommend them here again, and hope for better. These are two of the smartest, and funniest films in the English language, despite the fact that they are both British productions.

The first is the original "BEDAZZLED", written by, and starring Peter Cook, and Dudley Moore. Really great stuff. If you go to HULU.COM, browse the movies, you'll find it there for free. Godessoftheclassroom, I especially recommend this to you.

The second is "THE MAGIC CHRISTIAN" starring Peter Sellers, and Ringo Starr, and featuring the talents of John Cleese, Yul Brenner, Roman Polanski, Raquel Welsh, and a host of others.

A distant third, but still pretty funny, is "Caveman" with Ringo Starr.

Has any one seen any of these films? If not, do so. You'll thank me.

I remember a game that we played many years ago in our old neighborhood. A simple game, "Could you afford to buy your home today with current interest rates, equity requirements, and down payments?" Most everyone (we had all lived there about 10 years at the time) agreed that they could not. The most important purchase that a young couple could make is a home. If the couple is being honest enough with the people that they value enough to invite to their wedding to request what is important to them, why would you let tired old rules stand in the way of their dream? There is a reason that the housing market is in the dumps. Dollars, plain and simple. It takes a ton of dollars to buy a home in todays market. It's your choice, but I can't agree that being honest is tacky.

I have much more experience in the housing market the past couple of years that I have wanted. The costs involved in just putting an offer on a house, having an inspector look it over and deliver a report, appraisal fees, application fees, ad infinitum are unbelievable. Not to mention the fact that most homes now cost at least twice what they did only ten years ago.
While it may be considered inappropriate by some to request money for a wedding present, my wife and I did the same thing over thirty years ago. Almost everyone that came to our wedding agreed that our buying a home was important. Ten months later we were able to close on our first home. I am really grateful to the people that respected our wishes. It's always your choice, but the purchase of a home, IMHO, is currently at an all-time cost in relation to incomes.

I'd rather give money anyway, and let the couple use it for what they want. I'm also pleased that the couple want to use the money for something other than tons of tacky junk to clutter the house up with.

I generally go with a gift cert. when it is an option - It's a personal freaky thing of mine, but I hate buying crappy things other people want, like fricking glassware (I use plastic) and fricking pans that cost hundreds of dollars (I microwave). I don't buy all that junk. I consequently have money to go pay cash for a laptop when I feel like it. :D

Personally, I'm not into housebuying (I like renting), and I think a lot of people buy more house than they can afford and get ripped off on the loan. I approve 100% on more education before buying a first house.

As an Epileptic who lives in PA, I lose my DL for 6 months when I have one. It kinda' sucks not being able to drive, so I don't bother owning a car, or paying insurance on a car I can't drive. If I do ever get my DL after 6 months, I wind up buying a piece of junk to drive and pay for insurance month to month not knowing how long I'll be able to keep it. I'm on Disability, and they help me with rides to Dr and Neuro appointments, so at least I don't miss appointments because I can't get to them. Disability gave me a bus pass, so if I need to get somewhere, I don't pester family or friends for rides. With the price of gas these days, it's almost not worth owning a car and riding the bus! I guess you could call that part of it a blessing in disguise. So goes life, one day at a time.

As much as I dislike the man's politics - I wish him a speedy recovery

Regardless of the huge gap in our politics, I sincerely wish Senator Kennedy a full and speedy recovery. God Bless, Teddy.

The original "Bedazzled" was extremely funny, but looks a bit dated now, even though it still holds up well.
Some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen in a movie.

As much as I dislike Kennedy I hope he has a full recovery. That being said I hope he will see this as a wake up call and retire. No that this is going to happen, but I can hope can't I?

Wow, 434 comments, and only one deleted? Way to go, lizards. Class.

re: #4 capitalist piglet

A friend of mine had a stroke.

Pow!

He could not read or talk or work anymore.

Just like that, and no real significant improvement.

No good, Hope Kennedy did not get anything like that

Oh, money trees and dollar dances are just fun traditions. I don't think they're tacky at all. Giving the bride and groom some cash in hand for their honeymoon is charming; having them ask their guests to fund their residence isn't.

I realize I am coming way late to this particular side-track, but, FWIW, as a wedding guest it wouldn't bother me at all to be requested to give cash towards the conjugal home.

1. What could be easier? Simply write a check for the amount I feel able to give, or put the the folding green into an envelope. Saves me a trip to the mall (a fate worse than death, eh?).

2. The couple are in their 30s. They probably already HAVE most of the stereotypical wedding gifts. Do they need 3 toasters, or 5 waffle irons, or 2 microwave ovens?

3. Think about the big picture. We are in a clash of civilizations with the Muslim world, and they are out-breeding us big time. If, by contributing to this couple's conjugal home fund, I can help ensure that they reproduce with vigor and alacrity, then it is in my best interest to do so.

4. If I can't afford to give a cash gift, then I can't really afford to give them a microwave oven or a chia pet, either. In which case, I should respectfully decline the invitation.

For that matter, I don't want LGF to look like the CBS News site.

Those comments are amazingly awful. It doesn't look like they have any moderators at all.

I know I'm coming to this party late, but wanted to let you know that you're not far off. When the politics gets too much and my brain is going to explode, I post on the CBS Sportsline forums. There are "moderators" there, but they enforce the Terms of Service loosely and inconsistently, if at all. I recall one weekend where someone put up a hardcore porn image as an avatar and posted hundreds of explicit, violent messages. This user had literally hundreds of warnings from highly-ranked forum members (95/100 and up), I know I send several private messages to designated system admins, and nothing took place until mid-day Monday.

I think CBS takes their online presence and reputation about as seriously as they do their news reporting; not very.

Lastly, best wishes to Sen. Kennedy and his family, and prayers for a speedy recovery.

A speedy recovery for Sen. Kennedy -- I'm sure his family and friends are offering great support.

Wow, that comment section at CBS is a disgrace -- people really are sick.

News reports said he displayed strokelike symptoms like slurred speech....perhaps they meant more slurred than usual.

The Kennedy family seems cursed because they often engage in very risky (mis)behavior, only to find that the laws of nature if not of man apply to them just like us normal people.

Get well soon, Swimmer!

I dislike the senator's personal behavior and disagree his politics, but he is a child of God, as are we all. I wish him a speedy recovery, and hope his family can shrug off the venom being spewed elsewhere.

Good news for Teddy, and the family.

Hope Teddy enjoys a peaceful retirement on the Cod.

Teddy, you have served us* a long time, so please take this as Nature's way of saying "step down, take care of yourself and live out your final days in peace". The Union will will somehow muddle along without you.

(*note that I did not say "served us well")

I also didn't say anything about Chivas Regal and embalming-at-home...

Reminds me of an observation about Randolph Churchill, the much unloved son of Sir Winston Churchill, after an operation when a growth was removed and found to be benign.
A wag observed, "Isn't modern science wonderful? They opened up Randolph's body, found the only part that wasn't cancerous and then removed it."

"Teddy, I think I'm pregnant."
Don't worry Mary Jo, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."
