You have to read the Daily Mail on Sunday Morning. Here's a sample: Why the police now have to ask teenage muggers: 'Do you eat chips?':

The new questionnaire, known as the Common Assessment Framework (CAF), is part of a £20million programme called Every Child Matters (ECM), ostensibly set up to ensure youngsters are safe and leading positive lives. [snip] Any child not achieving the Government's five "outcomes" - being healthy, staying safe, enjoying life, "making a positive contribution", and achieving " economic well-being" - is now defined as having "additional needs".

I smell a new punk revolution.

Chile is actually good for your stomach. Not so many ulcers among populations that eat chile. And it turns on your endorphins - the "feel good, feel better" chemical. Start with small amounts. You don't have to eat raw jalepeno for breakfast (though I do - picked up the habit in the Southwest) or Thai-hot stuff, which even many chileheads cannot manage.

Well, I said before I was leaving and I must, but thought it might be of interest to raise a new topic.

You like panda bears, probably. Well, most people do. However, there is one guy who doesn't and he is none other than the famous governor of Tokyo:

Tokyo Gov. Ishihara questions 'excessive' rental fee for pandas at Ueno Zoo

Tokyo Gov. Shintaro Ishihara anti-panda crusade continues, with the object of his ire this time being the rental fee for a pair of giant pandas provided by China following the death of Ueno Zoo's Ling Ling.

"Just what does it mean to take money under a banner of goodwill and friendship? I think it's a rather excessive price." Ishihara complained during a scheduled briefing on Friday. The rental fee for the pandas is believed to be about 100 million yen.

"It's the metropolitan government's taxes that pay the money. Do people want to go that far to see them? I couldn't care less about them," he continued.

So, what's behind all of this? Well, for anyone not familiar with Ishihara, he is notorious for his occasional, how shall we say, provincial views. He and others of the right wing of the Japanese LDP party continue to struggle with Japan's growing relationship with China.

As an example, from the Observing Japan blog:
Fear and loathing in the wake of Hu's visit

As Jun Okumura notes, a poll by Fuji TV's Hodo 2001 program found that Fukuda Yasuo gained nothing from Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to Japan last week.

The poll recorded that nearly sixty percent of respondents disapprove of Mr. Fukuda's China policy.

Beyond public doubts, Mr. Fukuda's action (or inaction) during Mr. Hu's visit have driven conservative commentators into paroxysms of rage over Mr. Fukuda's supposed pusillanimity in the face of Chinese outrages, especially poisoned gyoza and human rights violations in Tibet.
[...]

So there remains plenty of open wounds in East Asia...

36 galloping granny  5/18/08 4:00:35 am reply quote

re: #35 freetoken

I'm not sure I would chalk his Panda objections up to any anti-Chinese feelings. Zoos that keep Pandas here in the US pay a cool million dollars per panda per year for them. China retains all ownership and ultimate say over virtually everything. Even the pandas that have been born in US zoos are named by the Chinese. Usually the zoo is given a list of 3 names to pick from. The world panda population is VERY managed.

Well, I guess that is my point... Ishihara is complaining about something that is just standard operating procedure. So, the Chinese are very possessive about their pandas... Be that as it may, zoos still cater to them.

When the last panda (in Tokyo) died recently (which is what set all of this off) there was plenty of press coverage and little kids lamenting, etc. Obviously a popular attraction, and thus the zoo wants replacements.

Ishihara's comments about the panda have nothing to do with the species... it has everything to do with the fact that they are Chinese.

And so the world turns... I just thought it was an interesting example of the existent tensions that underlie east asian relations.

Yes, I do understand about the little kids and all that jazz. The thing is, though, that ONLY the Pandas are rented out so to speak. Any other animal a zoo might have they have either purchased, been given as a real gift or have made a home for because the animal is injured in some way. Paying for Pandas is pretty controversial here too because they divert a huge amount of resources and take a huge chunk out of the zoo's budget.

I don't think it is about China. People would still find the $$$ controversial and perhaps not the best of investments (most zoos are lucky to stay afloat these days) no matter where the pandas were from. It is about the money.

Afghan journalist appeals death sentence

KABUL, Afghanistan - An Afghan journalism student sentenced to death for insulting Islam denied the charges before an appeals court Sunday, saying he only confessed to questioning the religion's treatment of women because he was tortured.

During an hour-long hearing, a judge read aloud a transcript of the Jan. 22 proceedings against 24-year-old Sayed Parwez Kambakhsh at the primary court in northern Balkh province.

It was the first time the public and the media heard full details from the closed-door trial, which highlights the influence of conservative religious attitudes in post-Taliban Afghanistan's still-nascent justice system.

Apparently Barrack Hussein Obamessiah is not only challenged geographically in knowing the simple number of states(hint Obama - there are not 57, 58 or 59 or them), he also apparently does not know where most of them are.

Why should American spend our blood and our treasure to free the downtrodden only to allow them to be instantly even more downtrodden in the name of "democracy freely chosen and voted on.?" That is sophistry, pure and simple.

U.S. soldier uses Quran for target practice; military apologizes

"I come before you here seeking your forgiveness," Hammond said to tribal leaders and others at the apology ceremony. "In the most humble manner I look in your eyes today and I say please forgive me and my soldiers."

Another military official kissed a Quran and presented it as "a humble gift" to the tribal leaders.

For the love of God, kissed the damn thing ?

A tribal leader said "the criminal act by U.S. forces" took place at a shooting range at the Radhwaniya police station. After the shooters left, an Iraqi policeman found a target marked in the middle of the bullet-riddled Quran.

Criminal act. Of Course. The UN will investigate.

Michael Moriarty is a down on his luck lawyer, who becomes a Nazi, and joins the SS. He (Moriarty) has dealings with the Weiss family, through the father, who is a doctor. It has been a while, so some of the info is a bit hazy, but I know I know more, just have to get that info from back of brain to front.

As mentioned in other post, the movie/book was powerful.

I would say no, but then again, I'm not sure what 12 year olds are seeing these days. From what I remember, there were some powerful scenes of the camps, and the portrayal of the massacre of Babi Yar, along with other parts.

Sounds positive.

You really are rather naive. Do you truly believe that we let Nazi Germany dictate their new constitution? Or Imperial Japan?

Why should American spend our blood and our treasure to free the downtrodden only to allow them to be instantly even more downtrodden in the name of "democracy freely chosen and voted on.?" That is sophistry, pure and simple.

I'm not naive granny, I know exactly what we did in Japan and Germany. Yes, we really did let them choose their own constitutions. The concept of freedom has apparently been missed by you. If we dictated their constitutions to them they would not be their constitutions nor would we have brought them freedom, we would have in fact simply made them our vassals.

re: #84 Shaky Louie

It is my understanding that, after the close of the war with Japan, the US decided for them what their constitution should be.
Perhaps we should have taken that same approach with regard to assisting the Iraqis in forming their own government.

Your understanding is wrong. The Japanese chose their own constitution all we did is impose a time limit on how long they had to ratify it.

True. But there is no point at all in even bothering to study the Holocaust unless you truthfully portray the camps in all their ugliness. There really is no way to sugar-coat the subject, which is why I have left it so long as it is. I don't think I'll introduce her to Sobibor, but she lost relatives at Babi Yar. And I don't want to leave learning about the Holocaust much later.

But then I first learned about the Holocaust about the time I was 3 via a book about WWII that my parents had and an uncle that liberated one of the camps.

Better go grab yourself a history book. We dictated - quite literally - the Constitution of Japan that stands today.

You are not completely correct, but mostly.
The Emperor was forced to renounce his claim to deity. The occupying U.S authority would never have stood for the reassertion of the Emeror as God in the new constitution.
I am sure that ther were other caveats.

Hi Dorian!

It sounds like you're in agreement that they could choose (except for the women, who could/would not know anything except to choose oppression/fear/sharia law) to have such a constitution; that, in spite of what we did for them, that we should NOT have a say in this.

Wikipedia - Japanese Constitution

Much of it was drafted by two senior army officers with law degrees: Milo Rowell and Courtney Whitney. The articles about equality between men and women are reported to be written by Beate Sirota. Although the document's authors were non-Japanese, they took into account the Meiji Constitution, the demands of Japanese lawyers, and the opinions of pacifist political leaders such as Shidehara and Yoshida Shigeru. The draft was presented to surprised Japanese officials on 13 February 1946. On 6 March 1946, the government publicly disclosed an outline of the pending constitution. On 10 April elections were held to the House of Representatives of the Ninetieth Imperial Diet, which would consider the proposed constitution. The election law having been changed, this was the first general election in Japan in which women were permitted to vote.

The MacArthur draft, which proposed a unicameral legislature, was changed at the insistence of the Japanese to allow a bicameral legislature, both houses being elected. In most other important respects, however, the ideas embodied in the 13 February document were adopted by the government in its own draft proposal of 6 March. These included the constitution's most distinctive features: the symbolic role of the Emperor, the prominence of guarantees of civil and human rights, and the renunciation of war.

While the final draft was drafted by the US Army, it was revised by Japan before being adopted or so, you both are right?
