On the Coattails of a Dead Man

Sun, May 18, 2008 at 8:07:21 am PDT

Here comes another audiotape in the long-running series of posthumous releases by the world’s most talkative dead man: Islamist Websites Announces Soon-To-Be-Released Osama Bin Laden Speech.

On May 18, 2008, the Islamist website Ikhlaas (www.ek-ls.org) announced that a new speech by Osama Bin Laden would be posted in the near future on the Internet. According to the announcement, the “very strong” speech, produced by Al-Qaeda’s Media Company Al-Sahab, would be an address to the Islamic nation.

# 21 rawmuse

I'm none of those three I just don't know whether he's alive or not. I haven't heard this latest speech but haven't the others that have come out recently contained current events that would indicate that he's alive? I could be wrong about that. If this is just a general "Death to America" speech without any current events being mentioned then I may hop onto your bandwagon and believe he's dead. Until that happens then I'm going to have to wait and see. Although I would love for him to be dead that won't make it so.

A special Jizya will be collected from the infidels who do not convert to Islam before the inauguration to help pay for the construction of the National mosque and remove all public infidel religious icons from the District of Columbia. Further details will be announce in the State of the Umma address.

A "speech" was broadcast just last week. No current events, no video, just generic "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" screed, per usual.

Like I said at the time, the year is 2008, every cell phone can make a vid, those little Flip cams are a hundred bucks, every laptop has a web cam built in. If he were alive, he would have a video.

In any case, like W said, he isn't leading any parades...

Well that is pretty convincing that there are no current events mentioned by OBL. Also I seem to remember that there were several videos showing OBL looking just terrible...graying hair, haggard appearance, yellow and gaunt. This was a few years ago. There was a rumor that he was getting dialysis for a kidney problem and that would fit with how he looked. So here's hoping that he either died at Tora Bora or disease took him. Now if we could only get his #2 Zawahiri (spelling?) then I would truly rejoice because he seems just as evil or more so than OBL.

I clicked on the link and saw that Osama is going to yadda yadda yadda. But to the right of that news is this article which makes me have a grain of hope:

Egyptian Author Sharif Hatata Talks about Life with Egyptian Feminist Nawal Al-Sa'dawi, States: The Hijab Symbolizes the Claim that Women Have No Brains

"We Are Regressing, Rather Than Moving Forward... Women are the Only Ones Ruled By Islamic Law in This Country"

"If we compare Islamic teachings in the days of the Prophet Muhammad to this day, we see that we are regressing, rather than moving forward. There was more freedom and more openness back then. I oppose Al-Azhar as an institution. I oppose those in charge of it. In my view, they spread backward and reactionary Islamic ideas, and they play a role in reinforcing the fundamentalist ideas in society.

[...]

"When society is ruled by religion, no one can speak out. Why? Because whenever you say anything, they respond: 'God said this. You are a heretic.' This is what is happening now. Anyone who expresses an opinion that differs from what is prevalent in society - especially with regard to the ideology of the fundamentalists and Al-Azhar - is immediately considered a heretic."

Interviewer: "But Egypt is not a religious state, you must be referring to the Muslim Brotherhood."

Dr. Sharif Hatata: "It is a religious state. It is written in the constitution."

Interviewer: "Do you support changing the article in the constitution that considers Islamic law as the main source for legislation?"

Dr. Sharif Hatata: "Our main source for legislation is not the Islamic religion. This is a lie. The main source for our legislation is the French law. Our civil laws have nothing to do with Islam and the Koran. Only marital laws are connected to Islam and the Koran. Women are the only ones ruled by Islamic law in this country.

Dr. Sharif Hatata: "Our main source for legislation is not the Islamic religion. This is a lie. The main source for our legislation is the French law. Our civil laws have nothing to do with Islam and the Koran. Only marital laws are connected to Islam and the Koran. Women are the only ones ruled by Islamic law in this country.

the “very strong” speech, produced by Al-Qaeda’s Media Company Al-Sahab, would be an address to the Islamic nation.

"Produced" is the right word.

Just a question. Do you think that Osama bin Dead gets more respect from the Dems than the President of the United States?

There is no question they consider him a deep thinker. Roads, schools, orphanages. Wish the USA knew how to do that stuff.
Do you think Obama would like to talk to him?

re: #83 Skepsis

Skepsis, do you think they are really not doing this?

I have a theory, and there are others that share my rationale.

If Al Gore had been President during 911, we would have responded, much in similar fashion after Saddam kicked the inspectors out in 1998, and lobbed a few cruise missiles as a result.

We would have claimed Bin Laden dead, any subsequent recordings declared propaganda, and the world is much safer.

Only problem, is this did not work in Somalia, nor the first attack on the WTC in 93.

In did not work for the bombing of our compound in Saudi Arabia, nor the Embassies, or the Cole.

I truly think, there are folks in the chain of command who see an existential threat for what it is, and not just a law enforcement issue.

We eliminate the command and control center, or actually let them know how far we have dug into their network, we lose operational superiority.

Think for a minute.

Recall from a couple years ago in Yemen?

The drone taking out a car with a Hell Fire?

Or the procession of of "leaders" found in Iraq?

Never show all of your cards, never.

Nothing has been released since Tora Bora which could actually be used for a voiceprint- quality is utter trash. If bin Laden were alive, he'd be making a new 5-minute video every day holding the New York Times and maybe reading 20 seconds of the nastiest anti-American commentary from it as part of his address.

Being any sort of effective rabble-rouser requires constant public presentation. Winston Smith's 1984 was replete with Big Brother images for damn good reasons of psychology and marketing. Osama's failure to do this satisfies me that he's dead.

So why doesn't Bush announce this? Several possibilities- the corpse might be under a thousand tons of rock or otherwise unavailable. Bush's advisors may fear establishing Osama as a shahid- right now, those who say he's alive have to explain his apparent cowardice. Maybe most important, the Democrats have lacked the big picture for decades. An Osama bin Dead'un would become a weapon against continuing the War on Terror, no matter how many terror cells and terror leaders are still out there.

As humans gain power over their environment, we become better fed and healthier. Unavoidably, perversion of these powers allows individuals to become more dangerous. We as a species need to start addressing severe socal pathologies more aggressively, before someone with a grudge against the human race acquires a vial of super-smallpox and blows it into the air vents at O'Hare. This leaves us with two choices- we can address such problems proactively, while they're still small, and run the risk of narrow minds with no future vision calling us warmongers, or we can wait until the nihilists and lunatics have almost won to blow them into a glass parking lot for all eternity.

The Democrats keep insisting on the latter, so that even fools are satisfied that there was a serious threat and no other choice. I look at that strategy and wonder how many innocent people will get vaporized because their leader was a madman. The typical Hiroshiman wasn't guilty of anything.

Bush is almost certainly saving millions of Muslim lives by acting now and in this way- we should make a point of saying so. The War on Terror is much bigger than any particular leader, even if he's still wanted dead or alive.

Dave

Let me get this straight:

Lives in Cave
No modern conveniences
Wipes butt with hand not paper
Has Media Company to produce films which he directs from cave while dead
Likely to be a dried splat on wall...
What exactly is the "Islamic" nation? Another cave?

And I should be waiting for him to tell me what?

I guess it's hard to release videotape when all they've got left by now is black-and-white home movies from the '60s.

128 Sacred Plants  Sun, May 18, 2008 10:43:40am

Over the course of the recent years, the brand has been transformed from a saucer eyes stimulus to an assertive voice in the dark, from a man of the year appearance into a carrier of timeless soundbites, from a nearly individualistic personality cult into an intransparent pulpit allowing for a rotation of speakers.

Recently, whenever the dead saint propaganda machine talked it had little insightful to say... last time it said blasphemic cartoons were worse than civilian casualties (such as the publication of the Abu Ghraib pics was seen as worse than the depicted events), a statement leaving only one thing more puzzling than its psychology - its purpose.

Empty announcements like this might be a sign that the brand has run out of ideas and is now beginning to actively look out for something the dead saint propaganda machine could be saying just to continue to exist as a brand.

129 markie  Sun, May 18, 2008 10:57:24am

Thinking that perhaps it's only purpose now is to give the Left a pretext for screaming how come Bush hasn't committed all our military from Guam to Georgia to hunt for Osama Bin Snipe Hunt Laden.

131 Sabraguy  Sun, May 18, 2008 12:05:41pm

They got their idea from the movie El Cid. You know, where the Spanish strapped Charlton Heston's dead body to his horse, and he rode out at the head of his army to defeat the Moors.

Now if al-Quaeda could arrange something like that, instead of a boring old audio tape, it would be pretty cool.

132 Mats  Sun, May 18, 2008 2:55:51pm

Charlie,
Really, what makes you think that old Binnie is dead? I am not saying that he isn't. I would just like to see the evidence you have.

Thanks

133 Shay4l  Sun, May 18, 2008 3:52:35pm

re: #132 Mats

Why prove he's dead? What benefit is there to trying to dig up a million pounds of rubble, to possibly find some DNA, out of distant mountains to prove a death? The question your type evade is what evidence is there that a man is alive.

You know? Press conference...written letter...video holding a recent newspaper...camera phone snapshot....

Why is the onus on strangers thousands of miles away to prove a death when the living person can show he's alive so easily?

134 So?  Sun, May 18, 2008 4:00:30pm

Let's see Finnerjacket can have a conference on whether the holocaust ever happened and scholar and politicians actually attend.

And every other week, we have anothe "WORLD ANNOUNCEMENT FROM BIN LADEN" broadcast & published by the MSM around the world.

The one thing none of these idiots ever ask the muslims who post these pronouncements or Al Jasneerah for that matter is:

PROVE BIN LADIN IS ALIVE!

Let's see some contemporary footage that cannot be refuted.
The MSM continues to play the Bin Ladin cash cow anoouncements.

WHERE'S THE PROOF HE'S ALIVE?

HEY JIHADIS, PROVE BIN LADIN IS ALIVE.

Dinnerjacket, have lunch with Binny lately?

135 gman  Sun, May 18, 2008 5:25:17pm

re: #134 So?

I agree. From the flimsy audio and video I have seen so far, someone is going to have to prove to me he is alive. Otherwise, like you mentioned above. why wouldn't Osama be taunting us every single week, trying to make Bush look bad.

re: #130 wanumba

Thinking that perhaps it's only purpose now is to give the Left a pretext for screaming how come Bush hasn't committed all our military from Guam to Georgia to hunt for Osama Bin Snipe Hunt Laden.

Even though it may have resulted in little more than rattling the cages up to now, the Bush administration has initiated the most significant revolt against the House of Saud since the end of the gold standard.

The Saudi order to their American janissaires to hunt down the terrorists without touching the autocracies that produced them has been resonating this inherent contradiction all along. Whenever the war on terrorism had to overcome the old order, the royals and their useful idiots were screaming distraction. Saddam had incorporated Kuwait as refreshment for wiping out Israel, so these bigots only wanted it to be removed from his claw but let the aggressor continue to exist.

My impression is a major reason why the brand´s continued existence is secured by a lasting demand is that it is scarcely rivaled in the ambition to get the House of Saud unplugged from power, and that family´s private name removed from the nation´s public one. This is why the brand will continue to be able to sustain attractivity, even though the original business idea - finishing off the janissaires would create the preconditions for unplugging the monarchy - did not work out up to this point.
