Structurally these sites are designed (like almost all blogs and message boards) to expire topics and discussion threads. Oh, these threads are still there in most cases, but you really have to go digging for them. The fact that things "fall off" the front page creates the impression that these sites have no history. This is reassuring in that members can rant, express their views, and generally be as bad as they want to, and they don't have to worry about their opinions coming back to haunt them.

That sorta defeats the whole idea of a WEB LOG doesn't it? I wonder if the little calendar and the "Archives" list also creates the impression these sites have no history? These gomers sure have a weak grasp of the obvious.

True. I find one of the huge issues the left has is seeing only what they want to see.

Lefties may pretend they are 100% non-homophobic, but this is far from the case. They use this issue when it serves them personally but don't support gay issues, such as the plight of gays in Islam (with a few notable exceptions). They leave the gay activists to do that. A while back, I posted a supportive comment at Michael Petrelis's site, after he got up on a chair at a UN speech by SG Ban Ki-Moon to protest "the unconscionable, murderous silence of the UN concerning continued violence and executions globally" targeting gays at a UN thing in San Francisco. A couple of other Lizards also posted. The only other posts and links were from gay sites. Didn't see any leftie sights lifting a finger to support him.

I don't try to intentionally offend people, but I am sure that somethings I have said may be misconstrued and taken out of context and may cause offense.

Mefi open threads would be a disaster. as you rightly state, but for LGF, where only one person has thread posting rights - CJ - and members may comment, open threads allow him to direct the tone and stay in touch with the base. Daily Kos has OTs too, but also many 'diaries' and many others with thread posting rights.

So, which blog is the most authoritarian?

Someday I'll manage to rein in my Hitlerish tendencies and give other people the ability to post articles and start comment threads.

Gee. I guess I should get rid of My Favorites and delete any and all links to past LGF pages. I wouldn't want to be "haunted" by easily accessible and accurate records of information which I might need in the future.
