Sunday Night Video: Tom Waits

I’ve always thought this is one of Tom Waits’ best songs, and the video’s pretty good too. It’s about heartache, and holding on.

Someone said once that Waits vocal chords had been ripped out, stomped on, soaked in bourbon and steeped in cigarette smoke, then put back in.
Just love his stuff.
Tom Traubert's Blues is my favorite.

I'd rather hear Susan Estrich sing.
Yep. The blues, come November. : )

Just stick around. I am so much smarter with this site than without it. Don't agree with all the music, but love to clicky clicky some real gems pop up.
But it's music. And in music, there is not wrong or right. There is just what speaks to you.
Except Song and Dance Man. He is so wrong about Tom Waits. (duck and run!)

I've heard him, all too many times.
It may have been a bit gruff, but to each his own in the realm of music. I will admit he's a good songwriter, but as a singer...I'll pass.
Honestly, I don't know what appeals to me about Waits. But I stop and listen every time he's on. But, I also love Barry Manilow's music. Does that make me odd?

I'm with SNDM. Tom Waits is an acquired taste. Back in the day I had a girlfriend who was a Waits fan, so I gave him a shot...never dug him...and the gf turned out to be a raving moonbat. Hmmm...wonder if there is a connection. I will ponder that.

No sarcasm intended. Just a comparison. Maybe Tom Waits will be as much of an icon of the music world as Frank. Maybe he won't. I have heard about Franks Zappa and listened to his music on the radio since I was a youngster.
Here is another one that I would not have heard of if it were not for LGF. Our MSM would never have covered this group. Here, it gets a post.

I'd say Tom Waits is every bit as respected ,if not more, than Zappa by the people who really count..his songwriting peers.

Certainly melodic as far as he goes. Aside from Frank's Wild Years, I've never been able to get into Tim Waits.
Whenever I've heard him before, he's reminded me of a mad tramp with emphysema.
Believers have assured me that I'm missing the point. I argue that I shouldn't have to struggle to find the point of popular music. I should know where I am instantly. The first time you hear the Ronettes, you don't have to struggle with the fact thay they sound totally unpalatable.

While I have not followed his later career, I enjoy his real early works and one of the best live albums ever is Waits's "Nighthawks At The Diner". First heard 'Emotional Weather Report' on an AM radio station out of Baltimore in the mid-late '70's (I was/am a Steely Dan fan and had started listening to more jazz due to the Dan, so my ears were quite receptive to Wait's smoky blues). The man's vocal prowess puts rappers to shame, as he paints vivid pictures with that wrecked voice of his.

Do not blaspheme the sacred name of Waits!
He captures a certain dark, melancholy mood better than just about anyone.
Here's another song about heartache. I swear Bob Mould had just finished weeping when he recorded it... his nose even sounds a bit stuffed up.

I love every song on Rain Dogs. That was on endless loop for probably three months when it first came out.
Rod Stewart's cover of Downtown Train qualified him for eternity in the hot place. I won't go into his other TW cover. I can't even bear to think about it.

Well that just proves that TW is good to cover if you can't really sing. But it also proves she can sing better that she can act.

Yup - no one comes close to Waits. He has one of the worst voices on the face of the earth - but just as surely, he is one of the best singers ever. One of my favorites has long been "Soldier's Things", and this one Charles has up is great.

Tom Waits is REAL MUSICIAN.....real lyrics, real life to back them up & a voice that has the 'journey 'carved into it. Tom Waits is also one of those musicians who cut the men from the boyz as far as followings go. He is a master craftsman w/words...a long ago forgotten art form thoroughly trashed by a bubblegum industry....may it DIE!......a master story teller & scene painter....& a legend like Frank.
Thank you Charles, great way to start the morning. This is a flawless video, beautifully shot, & deep.
