And pious action we do sugar o’er

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars but in ourselves...

From yesterday

Prince Charles: Eighteen months to stop climate change disaster

As an American I have little warrant to comment on the British succession, but since Charley himself does not hesitate to run his mouth about things that are not his affair, I feel free to do so as well:

If it were my call, he could still be king if he does the following:
-Gives away his Arab costumes
-Gets Camilla's teeth fixed
-Makes her promise not to wear a weed in her hair again
-Dresses in sackcloth and ashes and conducts a pilgrimage; barefoot and carrying a cross; to the site of Winston Churchill's grave at Chartwell, there to lie prostrate for 40 days and 40 nights as atonement for his many acts of adultery, dhimmitude, and general moonbattery.

After that, we might talk about the crown, assuming his mum does not outlive him, which is actually fairly likely given the family history.

I have heard for almost 8 years how the GOP plays the "politics of fear" with terrorism.

Obama warns seniors on Social Security

[Link: news.yahoo.com...]

Yep, it's just Republican. Donks have been playing the fear card with senior citizens since the first time they saw how easily old people were frightened.

10 Rookie  Mon, May 19, 2008 3:51:28am

I don't know if this was pointed out, but there is a news flash floating around regarding some terrorist minors (minors according to western laws) being arrested in Iraq.

500 youths [sic] detained in Iraq

Of course, those criminals are "youths" for Associated with terrorism Press. The fact that they planted IED and shoot at American soldiers seems to be of no importance to ACLU. I bet if some American "youth" will throw a bucket of red paint on one of their offices they will scream all over denouncing this heinous act. But arresting murderers of 16-17 years old (which by no means are "kids") is "abhorrent'. director for ACLU Human Rights Program is Jamil Dakwar. Go figure, a guy - educated in Israel - who probably will stab his daughter if she's sleeping with the wrong guy is giving the world some advice. STFU.

"We can't drive our SUVs and eat as much as we want and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times ... and then just expect that other countries are going to say OK," Obama said.
A scientist has proven that people forced to smile have longer-lasting stress that may harm their health.

The Donks are trying to save our lives,
I'm not smiling.

Speaking in Oregon BHO said, "WE CAN'T DRIVE OUR SUVS AND EAT AS MUCH AS WE WANT...and keep our homes on 72 degrees at all times...and then just expect other countries are going to say OK."

I see trans-fat bans coming - Oh wait, they're already here. Government regulated thermostats? They're already here.

Reminds me of the good old 'Carter days when we were supposed to put on our cardigan sweaters. Better yet, I remember when Carter pushed for windfall profits taxes on the oil companies. Hmm... where am I hearing that?

Not surprisingly, the MSM has completely ignored this. G-d help us all!

What exactly are the left wing fanatical kooks talking about when they rave on and on about the evils of "Zionism?" This post from yesterday is a perfect example. I always thought that "Zionism" was just the Jewish state of Israel. Am I naive? For the life of me I have no idea what is in the minds of these moonbats!

As a guy who travels a lot, and I just came back from Asia, I can assure anyone that in cities all over Asia they drive as many cars as in any other country. Maybe even more, as the public transport is unreliable in many places. The difference with the West is that the price of petrol is symbolic.

As for air-cons - hardly any home is missing it, but the insulation of those homes is zero. So you just have to run the air-con all day long. Again, the price of electricity is just a fraction of what we pay in Europe or US, so it works for them.

Oh... and in Asia they started to eat as much as they can, but unfortunately they found out that their production is way to low to feed so many people. I bet Hussein Obama will be happy to lend them some grain.

We can watch his limousine and motorcade speed past us, as the bus is halted at a temporary security roadblock. Michelle will give us the finger from the back window of the Town Car.

/That really is an extraordinary quote, when you think about it. Can't eat as much as we want without permission from overseas. Maybe the teleprompter was out of order again. He needs a teleprompter chip implanted in his brain for full coverage. Obama is so -- pedestrian. Yet another run-of-the-mill rich left-wing hypocrite, a la Gore, Edwards, most of Hollywood, etc. I don't begrudge wealth. I begrudge this kind of talk from a wealthy man. Just say, "Yeah, I'm rich. Where in the world is Adam Gadahn?

*snip*
"For those who are carefully following the ongoing saga of Adam Gadahn, it is worth paying close attention to one upcoming calendar date in particular: the seventh anniversary of 9/11. Gadahn has demonstrated a past penchant for making grandiose public appearances on 9/11, triumphantly gloating over Al-Qaida's latest "victories" over its enemies. His continued unexplained absence from As-Sahab releases as this date approaches will only add further weight to the argument that Gadahn was indeed "martyred" alongside Abu al-Laith al-Liby in the far northern reaches of Pakistan. For Gadahn, it has been a long journey and a strange ideological transformation from his younger days in California spent promoting recycling and environmental conservation. If ultimately proven, his death will serve as a lesson for what happens to naive individuals lured into believing there is honor in playing foolish games with guns and bombs."

When he gets out of the mile long limos and stops eating $99 a pound ham, moves out of his million dollar home and sends his kids to public school then Barack Hussein Obama might gain a smidgen of credibility that gives him the RIGHT to tell all the rest of us what to drive, what to eat and how warm to keep our homes.

Lots and lots of people and there is Barry all decked out in his best charcoal suit & tie, with the little woman standing proudly beside him in front of all those people, begging them to make her First Lady of our land. What was she wearing. . . . . . . . dark colored sweat pants and a dark red velveteen zip-front sweat jacket. The SINGLE most "presidential" outfit I have ever seen on a first lady or potential first lady from anywhere at all. Even the Russian first ladies.

I don't think he is "afraid" - I think that he has done this deliberately so that nobody can point to his voting record like you could with Kerry's. Of course it is every bit as telling - maybe more so - that he refuses to vote on those subjects. That tells me that when he talks about healthcare or abortion or any of the other subjects he steadfastly refuses to vote on, that he is lying through his teeth.

We happened to look up Vermont's Senator Bernie Sanders by way of comparison. Very socialist as I am sure you know. In all the time he has been in the Senate Bernie has missed just FIVE votes. That is altogether - just 5.

France Admits to Contacts With Hamas

By STEVEN ERLANGER
Published: May 20, 2008
PARIS — France confirmed on Monday that it has had contacts with the leaders of Hamas for several months to try to better understand the positions of the radical Islamic group that is running Gaza.

Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner emphasized that there were no negotiations with Hamas, labeled a terrorist group by both the United States and the European Union.

“These are not relations, they are contacts,” Mr. Kouchner said on Europe1 radio. “We are not the only ones to have them,” he said. “We must be able to talk if we want to play a role.”

Mr. Kouchner confirmed a report in the daily Le Figaro, quoting a retired French diplomat and former ambassador to Iraq, Yves Aubin de La Messuzière, saying that he had met a month ago in Gaza with Ismail Haniyeh, the Hamas prime minister, and Mahmoud Zahar, among the most important Hamas leaders in the Palestinian territories.

I have the day off today, so I picked up a tall coffee at the local beanery and the dog and I went for a walk out on the pier.

It's chilly, but it sure is a beautiful day along the lakeshore.
See?

Springtime has clearly arrived in my little resort town. The RV's have begun arriving in earnest, and the lakeshore campground is starting to fill up. I was joined this morning by quite a few morning doggie-walkers, including a guy with a beautiful matched pair of bassetts.

I've decided that there are two long-neglected loves that I'm going to add back into my life over the coming summer: book reading, and fishing.

Toward that goal I'm off to the bait shop in a while to pick up my 2008 fishing license (the Lake Perch will be running soon, and they are some damned fine eating). I've also begun my summer reading list for those lazy afternoons at the beach, and I'm already halfway through my first pick: "Water For Elephants", by Sarah Gruen.

As long as its' an open thread... what's on your summer reading list?

Exactly. It would not be fair game at all to drag his children into things - even when their "concerned mama" does it.

It's not the kids--it's her statements about them.

Just talked to my mom. She's all up in arms about BHO's comments re: driving and eating and the thermostat. "Since when did we need ANYONE's permission to live our lives?"

The Yellow-Dog Democrat is now voting Republican.

"Lay off my wife"?

A-hole, you're running for what is arguably the most important job on the planet - nothing about you, your family, your friends, or your personal history, is off-limits, except perhaps the tawdry details of your sex life (yuck), unless those details are proveably known to intrude into the affairs of your workplace.

I love this. A President of a supposedly free society who has the nerve to say anything is "off limits"? Replace "wife" with "legislation", "negotiations", (name of current scandal), pick one.

"Don't ask me any tough questions, just fawn over me and pimp my agenda, or I'll get angry."

Why should she apologize? Apologizing will not change the fact that this is how she feels about America - that she has never been proud of our country and that she thinks we are a mean country. That IS how she feels and how she has felt right along. Why should she get a pass?

If she was a convicted thief who "felt bad" and apologized, would you then put her in charge of your bank?

No, I don't think that she deserves a pass. However if she did apologize it would at least give Barry some kind of theory to be upset.
It is hypothetical. No apology will be forthcoming therefore the vulgar Michell remains fair game.

130 lbs? My brother's yellow lab is 110 lbs and he is HUGE. Can't imagine 130....

Good morning Mandy! I think in principle you're correct, but remember he's running against John McCain who wants to take the "high road" in the campaign and that Obama has the support of the MSM.
Who will be first lady is incredibly important (as we discovered when Bill Clinton is President and the boxes and boxes of materials on White Water which had been missing for months suddenly appeared on Hillary's desk). IMO Obama's just trying to define the "rules of the campaign" for everyone cause he's NOT proud of how HE will look if anyone looks closely at his wife - she has been as far left as you can get without suddenly becoming right (assuming a political continuum here that's spherical) and if that gets out, at the very least Obama's judgment is gonna be called into question.

Vermont Girl Scouts was more traditional, but national came down with the pronouncement that they would combine with New Hampshire to make just one council whether they liked it or not. Nobody in VT is really happy about it, starting with the fact that the NH council charges $100 more a week for camp and rewrote the age groups.

I think John thinks most Americans are nice people and will vote for the candidate who is perceived to be the "nicest". Sorta the Dole approach to campaigning.
IF Obama is the nominee, and IF the two of them debate the old fashioned way, with each asking the other questions, replying and rebutting, with a moderator who is only a "time-keeper" then we'll see how "nice" John is really gonna be in this campaign; that slam on Obama over appeasement was the FIRST time I remember John JUMPING on Obama with one foot; if he makes it two feet and more frequently, then I think McCain will not only win, but help keep Republican congressional losses to a minimum.
Otherwise, with the MSM firmly in his pocket, Obama wins, hands down and going away cause not enough folks get their news from Blogs yet.

BEIJING - Three giant pandas are missing from the world's most famous panda reserve after the earthquake and five staff members were killed, a Chinese official said Sunday.

All the pandas at the Wolong Nature Reserve were first reported safe Tuesday, but an official with the State Forestry Administration now says three are missing, the state-run Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.

The reserve's other 60 giant pandas are safe, forestry spokesman Cao Qingyao told Xinhua.

Wolong is the only place in the world where pandas, among the world's rarest animals, can be seen in such large numbers.

The reserve is 18 miles from the epicenter of the May 12 earthquake that has killed more than 32,000 people. The government has said it expects the final death toll will surpass 50,000.

He's going to declare that the negotiations have failed - even though the Palestinians haven't actually changed their negotiating posture in decades - they want Israel's destruction and haven't been dissuaded from that. So, Abbas will declare the negotiations failed and... wait for it... blame Israel for the failures.

Never mind that the Palestinians had no intention of real peace with Israel, or that the Palestinians themselves couldn't agree on who'd run their thugocracy - given that Hamas controls Gaza and Fatah nominally controls the West Bank areas ceded to the PA under Oslo and successive agreements. Hamas has no intention of recognizing Israel's peaceful coexistence, so peace isn't going to happen unless and until Hamas changes its tune, which is a near impossibility given that Hamas is religiously and ideologically motivated to destroy Israel. Decades of indoctrination also shape that view - reinforced on a daily and weekly basis with videos and sermons calling for Israel's destruction.

BTW, did ya notice Hillary's quote in that link about Obama, SUV's, 72 degrees and if the rest of the world approves?
"Senator McCain said let's give everybody a gas tax holiday but doesn't want to pay for it. I think I've got the best plan. Let the oil companies pay it out of their excess profits," she said.
Uh huh.
Well this here's a jump ball question for all three wannabes - how come France - France! - gets 70% of their electrical power from nuke reactors and we get what - 5%? Would somebody PLEASE GET SERIOUS about energy Independence for the US?!

real, only about 30% of our electricity comes from fossil fuels here in the US - and that is mainly coal, not oil. The rest is mostly water generated. France does not have the water resources that we do. That is why they get their power from nuclear energy.

But heating oil is different than electrical generation. Virtually all housing anywhere in the Northeast is oil or natural gas dependent for heating and as you know, we cannot do without heat for at least a full 6 months a year. Nuclear power stations would not solve that problem, unless there was a huge investment in converting all of the existing housing stock to electric heat - a project that would take years.

Dangerous Idiocy

I apologize for not having a lot of time to day so quick and dirty:

"[Bush and Republican nominee John McCain have] got to answer for the fact that Iran is the greatest strategic beneficiary of our invasion of Iraq. It made Iran stronger, George Bush's policies," he said.

"They're going to have to explain why Hamas now controls Gaza, Hamas that was strengthened because the United States insisted that we should have democratic elections in the Palestinian Authority," he added.

......
"They're trying to fool you, and trying to scare you, and they're not telling the truth. And the reason is because they can't win a foreign policy debate on the merits. But it's not going to work,"

.....

Speaking to reporters after a speech, Obama said if elected president he would meet, with preparation but without preconditions, leaders Bush has avoided - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, North Korea's Kim Jong-il and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

"I would engage in direct talks," he said.

You can look it up. He said it.

Appeasement is offering implacable totalitarian dictators carrots and inducements to remain enemies. It is giving the contemptible dignity and conferring your honor and respect to them by meting with them as equals.

North Korea operates the largest system of concentration camps in the world. Like it or not, Bush's diplomacy has forced them to divulge the extent of their nuke programs and agree to their dismantlement. We needed Chinese help to do it. But even an ugly win is a win. The Israeli air strike that killed Syria's North Korean aided nuclear program was a huge humiliation and a demonstrated violation of the six party talks. They finally complied, late but complied with the required disclosures now we move on to dismantlement. If this is failure give me more of it.

As for Hamas' electoral victory; actually it was a glorious victory for Israel, the more Palestinians destroy themselves, the better for Israel.

As for Iran, nothing more shows Obama as the tyro he is than his thinking he can sway these barbarians with American blood on their hands. Nothing other than a gun pointed at their heads is a communication they understand.

Churchill

once quipped: “Neville Chamberlain looked at foreign affairs through the wrong end of a municipal drainpipe”

And here is why:

"We should seek by all means in our power to avoid war, by analyzing possible causes, by trying to remove them, by discussion in a spirit of collaboration and good will. I cannot believe that such a programme would be rejected by the people of this country, even if it does mean the establishment of personal contact with the dictators."

Obama is wrong are for the same reasons Chamberlain was wrong:

He does not understand what happens if he is wrong; his policy could lead to Iran getting the atomic weapons; he does not understand the inner nature of the Iranian regime, the obsessive burning Islamist fanaticism that are the key instructions to the Regime's operating system; lastly, and he does not see Iran's regime is not content to be just to be located in within the confines of their current borders. What can he offer to men who only seek power? What will they do with it if they have it?

Note also that, like many Harvard educated men of learning, Obama implicitly sees no need for other people to have elections and be responsible for their choices.

Keep this man out of my White House!

It currently costs about $9,000 to convert a single house or apartment to electric heat. I know this because I had advised a friend who owns several apartments to look into converting as a way to combat the $1000 a week oil bill. Most apartment dwellers and many families do not have close to that kind of money, so who would pay for this? Some tax credit scheme would not work because you have to have the cash up front to get the work done.

And who exactly would do all the installations and removal of the old equipment? Most states you have to be trained and licensed.

This just isn't a workable plan. Sounds nice - but it won't work.

The natural gas we use comes from either the US or Canada. I, for one, would not like electric heat. I pay enough to that bastard of a utility, Communist Edision as it is. The more I pay to ComEd, the more that winds up in the Illinois Combine's pockets, and I do not want that.

Anyway, IMHO, gas-forced air is the best form of heat, and uses the same vents and ducts as for air conditioning.

Thank you for your prayers for my uncle and his family. About 10 days ago my uncle went to the hospital in severe pain. On Monday my aunt was told that he had inoperable liver cancer.

My uncle died Saturday night. He was able to spend some good quality time with my aunt and my cousin this last week. They had a lot to talk about. He did have a few days of lessened pain and I believe prayer was responsible for that. Saturday was a tough day for him and while we are all sad, we are thankful that for him, the suffering is over.

Taking a moment today to remember Canadian Gordon Sinclair, who passed away on May 17th, 1984.

Sinclair, you may remember, angrily penned a bold editorial called "The Americans" that shamed Americas' critics all over the globe.

His editorial is just as relevent today as it was 24 years ago, and more so (someone needs to send a copy of this piece to the Obamas, I think)

Here's an excerpt, I encourage all of us to read through it again today, listen to the audio, and take pride in being American citizens.

.... this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtse. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Misssissippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help... Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped.

The Marshall Plan .. the Truman Policy .. all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans...

Iraq party: Punish U.S. soldier who shot at Quran

Iraq's most powerful Sunni Arab political party on Monday said a U.S. soldier's desecration of the Quran, the Muslim holy book, requires the "severest of punishments," not just an apology and a military reassignment.
...
But the Iraqi Islamic Party -- which said it reacted to the news "with deep resentment and indignation" -- wants the "severest of punishments" for the action to serve as a lesson for the future.

"Such assaults have recurred over the past few years; therefore, the apology alone is no longer sufficient," the party said in a statement. "The U.S. military should take preventative measures considering the feelings of Muslims."

The statement added, "The Iraqi Islamic Party demands the U.S. administration deal firmly with these violations. We also demand our government take an appropriate stance (or position) towards the enormity of the humiliation."

Of course they're asking for the death penalty.

Yup. However, he is a member of the United States military. He likely is guilty of willful disobedience of a lawful order and they might perhaps get him on dereliction of duty, but shooting up a koran is not a crime in the United States of America and it is American law that applies to the American military, since George Bush was smart enough to keep us out of that international court mess. re: #435 Honorary Yooper

The cost of electric heat is dependent on the generating source, the cheapest being hydro-electric where available. Many electrical systems use forced air which is best if you wish to integrate heating and cooling.

An underused energy source is geothermal which has the disadvantage of being very expensive to install in existing facilities. It can do both the heating and cooling and even works in the Canadian climate.

Iraq party: Punish U.S. soldier who shot at Quran

Of course they're asking for the death penalty.

Because those pious and honorable Muslims would never, EVER do something as horrific as as destroying a religious object that is associated with someone elses' faith... right? They are so respectful towards other cultures and religions that I'm sure that it would never even cross their minds.

You have to wonder how many Korans and Bibles have been ripped apart, shot at, blown up, crapped on, and pissed on by the very same fanatical hypocrites who are now screaming about respect.

Ah good morning Rose! Doncha know it's ok if Muslims desecrate the Koran, but not if Infidels do it!
I mean, if it's Sunni's blowing up a Shiite Mosque and a zillion Korans go up in smoke, that's ok. But if one Infidel sniper (who, if he did do it, is one helluva shot!) shoots up a couple, why that's worse than blasphemy.
Death to the Infidels who are protecting us, feeding us, rebuilding our infrastructure, paying for this in the loss of life of American Infidels and money!

re: #562 Annar

The cost of electric heat is dependent on the generating source, the cheapest being hydro-electric where available. Many electrical systems use forced air which is best if you wish to integrate heating and cooling.

An underused energy source is geothermal which has the disadvantage of being very expensive to install in existing facilities. It can do both the heating and cooling and even works in the Canadian climate.

Geothermal also has the disadvantage of only being feasible in a few places too. The nearest hot springs to the Midwest (and Chicagoland in particular) are a long distance away. I'm not sold on nuclear to generate electricty due to the fact that Illinois has more nuclear power plants and anywhere else in the US, and also has the highest electricity rates.

I'm well aware of the evils of "Commonwealth" Edison since I used to live in Illinois and my parents stayed there until they died.

No nuclear facilities have been constructed in the U.S. for many years and those that exist were each constructed on individual designs. A standardized design along with modern techniques could significantly reduce costs. However, with all the regulations on the books, I'm quite sure that we'll all be back living in caves drawing pictures of spotted owls before anything gets done.

Um..........my son is there right now....in "Memphis" at least.....waiting for his transfer plane home from Georgia.....is the AIRPORT okay......? ? ?

It's as safe as any domestic airport these days. Chances are, he'll make it home to you.

You must worry- it is your job- but save the big time worries for when (God forbid) Obama is the one to pick our national security advisers.

In a sane world... your post would be...

LOL!

But for some reason (Obama) it chills me to the bone.

More like about *164* times!

Leaving out Obama's brain lapses, his ideas and all of his other negatives, the simple fact is that he isn't even doing more than a half-assed job of what the state of IL HIRED HIM to do!

If I wasn't doing the job I already had, I wouldn't be promoted to a higher paying position in my government agency. (I work for a state agency.) So why in the name of peas and rice does this goof think he should be hired for PotUS? He's not doing his job as a senator!

The contrast between him and McCain--from a work history perspective--couldn't be more obvious. The state of AZ kept sending McCain back--first as a congressman, then as senator--since the early 1980s. I was watching Filmation cartoons then, and the US--through four presidental administrations and several Congressional session--is still standing, w/or w/out Senator Obama.

We the people must scrutinize the candidates records(work histories, performance, character, criminal record)--the same way our managers/supervisors/bosses do to our records for any job in this country. If you want to work at McDonald's, you have to submit to a background check. Obama pitches a fit when we--his bosses--do the same when evaluating him for the ULTIMATE promotion: leader of the Free World.

As if we needed another reason not to vote for Obama; but for those in management positions on this board, this is a good one to pose to any employees when they talk politics at the water cooler.

From that same VOTE SMART website: McCain's voting record has over 220 "NV" entries. Not impressive. With that said, he did spend a lot more time in the Senate. I leave it to you to decide if he gets a pass.
