Microsoft could F up a wet dream. Sorry.

it's no surprise that they can't get an OS correct that's been in development and the market for over 10 years.

This means that inevitably, someone at at least one of the 37 locations I manage will have downloaded service pack 3, killing the productivity of the rest of my job and subsequent week that's not even supposed to include I.T. work.

Same here. As long as we are on the topic of XP, the best machine to run it in my experience, seems to be a Mac. Vista, too.

Of course a mac with OSX blows it away in efficiency and stability... hands down.

I installed the other fixes, but I tried SP3 on a sacrificial system. It was slow to begin with, but seems even slower.
I'll get back to the system to see if it is usable, or back out SP3 or just wipe and reinstall.
Meanwhile, the other 4 Windows machines at home are not getting SP3. (One is XP on a Mac under Parallels)

48 Frank Veracity  Mon, May 19, 2008 7:26:23pm

If you notice at the end of the article it says the problem is on some HP computers. I'm not surprised. Whenever a client calls me and tells me they are having problems with updating their computer (hardware or software) and I find out it's an HP or Compaq I know it's going to cost them a lot more to have me work on it because HP systems are non-standard for hardware and they have some really goofy proprietary OS extensions that makes it almost impossible to upgrade or port onto another system.

I really don't like HP computers!

If Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 is working well for you, you may want to think twice before doing the SP3 “upgrade:” Users Report More Trouble With Windows XP SP3.

This will be the upgrade that srews your pc, so that you *have* to get vista, because that particular evil (read: selfish...brazenly trying to monopolize you where they can)empire doesn't want to deal with paying for support anymore...eventuallly, they'll *hide* the upgrade/service pack/code library...forcing you to go to some off-brand website, sign up and get 5 downloads free kinda site...in seven years, your perfectly fine audio hardware on that laptop will become a bitch to get the driver for....

One of the problems is with AMD CPUs and the MS SP3 doing something that AMD doesn't need. The other issue is that before you do the SP3 upgrade, make a backup of your drive. DriveImage XML is a great little package for doing just that. Oh, and did I mention that it is free? I've got a Dell, installed SP3 and lost some parameters that allowed me to run some Siemens software (work) and some other specialized software. Reinstall the backup and all is well. Won't be attempting that any time soon.

OT: Now this is funny: The National Director of the KKK attacks Ben Stein for historical revisionism....

The Trap is Set (warning KKK site)

Ben Stein (left) is a Jewish celebrity and actor of sorts and he has set a trap for Christians. It’s the old bait and switch scam.
...
Ben Stein takes this opportunity when Christian young people have lowered their defenses and begins to explain that evolution is the foundation of racism. They are told that Darwin’s theory of evolution is the foundation of racial hatred, segregation and prejudice. And as an example he uses Hitler and the National Socialist government of Germany as a perfect example of what can happen when racism gets out of control. According to Stein, Hitler embraced Darwinism and spread the teachings of evolution throughout Germany. Everyone has been taught to hate Hitler and now they are told that at the core of his teachings was white racism which came about through the teachings of Darwin. But just the opposite is true. The teachings of Darwin were rejected by Hitler and schools were not allowed to teach Darwinism or evolution. The teachings of Darwin were spreading in Germany (as they are in this country) but when Hitler was elected chancellor he encouraged the rejection of Darwinism and books which promoted evolution and Darwinism were destroyed.
...
The message of the movie is not about creationism but to trap Christians into accepting, tolerating, promoting and engaging in interracial relationships and marriage. After all as Christians we don’t want to promote the evils of Darwin - do we?
The trap has been set - don't get caught!

I did Capitol Reef when we hit Bryce and Zion's Kolob Canyon (the less traveled part) along with Cedar Breaks and Vermillion Cliffs

What's so impressive is that when you're up at Capitol Reef and driving down to each of the lower parks, you literally see the whole thing unfolding - the ground literally splitting and contorting into each of the national parks before you with the Grand Canyon at the low end.

You can smell javelinas before you see them, Sarge!

I have almost an acre enclosed with a ten foot stucco wall and much more property unenclosed. Strangely, the critters -- at least the small ones -- find their way inside my wall. I've killed rattlers every couple months and scorpions almost as frequently. Javelinas and coyotes stay outside the wall, though a bobcat once jumped the wall and drink from my pool! Another bobcat became a quasi-pet. We let him in the house, accidently, when he came through the screen door to eat cat food. After that, he'd come to the door and wait for food.

Oh, and a mountain lion came down my long driveway.

Oh yeah. My Monday started Friday night when the dog found a rattler in the back yard. Big sucker, about 30" with 2" rattles. Ticks me off because I thought I had the backyard snake-proofed. Dog's great, she has a distinctive bark so you know she's got one, problem is that she is getting way too brave and grabs the body and runs around with it, shaking it, after the head has been separated. I'm afraid she's going to try taking one on one of these days

i'm taking six teenage boys to Breckenridge, Bob. Camping. They're bringing their bikes and racing. The only problem is food -- they eat, on average, about 8000 calories a day! And when its cold, their calorie consumption goes up another 1000 or so.

I only asked so I could give you a few suggestions.

Anyway, quite a few restaurants have 2 for 1 meals during the spring/summer. Get a copy of the Summit Daily News, our free local paper, and look at the ads since most all restaurants with 2 for 1's advertise in it.
They're available all over the county, in the light blue newspaper boxes, or just ask in any business you walk into. They'll almost certainly have one.

29 June -- Park City UT
11-13 Jul -- Snowmass CO
17-20 July - Mt Snow, VT
1-3 Aug -- Sol Vista CO
6 Sept -- Breckenridge CO

Great stuff, that. The mountain lion's a little on the scary side, though. They've been known to track and attack small children. There was a flurry of that at Mesa Verde back in the mid- to late-90's.

I really appreciate the wildlife, and have a healthy respect for it. Before we moved here, we heard horror stories about the bark scorpions, and I have a friend that was stung by one, but we haven't had any encounters like that yet. But we live in a pretty densely populated area, though. The javelinas live in a wash behind our complex, and used to come through every so often.

Gosh, I hope not. I'm worried about that kind of thing with my pooch, too. She was a stray before we adopted her, and she has a thing for wildlife. She got a taste for doves, and is almost uncontrollable when she sees them on the ground. Hopefully I'll spot any rattlers before she does.

A lizard suggestion -- those of us with teenage daughters/sons may want to try these mountain bicycle races. Its good, clean fun. Just great for kids. There are races, too, for the very young as well as geriatric races for ... YOU.

Seriously, the race categories start at beginner, progress to sport, then expert. After that one is either semi-pro or pro. Kids can't get higher than expert.

Adults can race just for the fun of it. The age groups go by decade or sometimes in five year increments -- 40-45, women, for example.

Anyway, get out and try it with your kids!

Billionaire investor George Soros has given his gloomiest assessment of the state of the US and world economies.
He told BBC business editor Robert Peston that the "acute phase" of the credit crunch may be over but effects on the real economy are yet to be felt.
He warned the "financial bubble" of the last 25 years could be drawing to an end and the post World War II "super-boom" era could also be over.
He predicted a "more severe and longer" US slowdown than most people expect.

Have you been down to the stores to buy the deer repellent items? Some of them might work! Or you can buy one deer repellent item, a rifle, and learn to prepare venison!

Sorry to butt into your conversation, but I have a dog that HATES (this should be bold, underlined and in blood red) snakes. He's been bitten twice by copperheads; the second time almost 'done him in,' and he goes berserk over anything even remotely snakelike. He, too, has a distinctive bark to indicate when he's located a snake. He will bark and wait for us to come help, and if we don't, he'll take the snake on himself. So far he's killed roughly 30 snakes, mostly copperheads. He's a big dog, so a copper would have to be huge to kill him, but we don't have the big rattlers here, TG! Keep an eye out and try to teach the dog to wait for you. Praise lavishly upon discovery, but then take over! You're the pack leader, so it's your right. If you can cement that idea in the dog's head, you can be a little more confident of safety.

So people are starving in Sudan because anorexic druggies in Hollywood are screwing with the food supply?

Maybe. Sudan is so screwed up that there are a hundred reasons that people there aren't eating. More the point however:

The Economist (no right-wing rag) and several other papers/mags have discussed the impact on international food prices that bio-fuels have had. Clearly bio-fuels are an development primariliy intended to battle environmental changes (although some people do see it as an "energy independance" issue...) Given the orgy of "green" emphasis out there and the fact that commodity prices are being driven up by, in part, bio-fuel expansion and subsidy, it makes life harder around the world for places that already struggle. For instance, there have been riots in 30 some contries about these food price/availability issues. In Haiti (no bastion of stability) they caused the collapse of the official government.

I think it is reasonable to calculate that there are people going hungry because of foppish rich libs and the policies they advance.

Not in Sudan but the ethanol craze has caused or contributed to starvation and food riots in Haiti, Egypt, and the Philippines. In Sudan people are starving because the genocidal muslims in charge of the country refuse to let food get to Christians, animists, or blacks.

It works fine for me...like usual. Microsoft supports a lot of hardware and legacy software...unlike Mac. Apple works in a closed loop by tightly controlling the software and the hardware...go ask Psystar how their Mac clone business is going.

Somehow it's fine and dandy when you have to replace your computer and "upgrade" your software every 3 years if you are a Mac user, but Microsoft is the villain for trying to cover all the bases.

People whine and complain about Microsoft all the time, but they still don't buy Mac or Linux machines in any large numbers. I think people just like to complain. Either that or they feel stupid that they can't do the easiest tasks with a PC and feel better about themselves by bashing the company.

I've moved since then, but the coyote pee works well. Deer hate that smell (and so do I).

I love venison, but that particular patch of woods was private, and obviously houses encroached it. I'm not sure, but I think the landowner could still allow hunting during season - I saw a hunter early one morning, but he looked sneaky to me. Of course, hunters need to be sneaky, don't they? Actually, I was in the yard one morning and my dog pointed to the woods, which gave me the willies, so I went inside and looked out the upstairs window. There he was, a few yards off my property, which kind of creeped me out.

Most of our snake days are over now. We moved from the farmhouse next to the woods into town. Some advantages to that, but oh boy! do I miss the quiet! Sitting on the porch watching a storm come in, listening to the spring peepers and the owls, the wind in the trees and the creek running... ah, much better than brakes and roaring engines and the thump-thump-thump of overcranked bass speakers. FUCK YOU, 9th Circuit!

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday ruled against an Algerian convicted of conspiring to detonate explosives at Los Angeles International Airport during the millenium holiday travel rush.

In its 8-1 decision, the court upheld Ahmed Ressam's conviction on an explosives charge, one of nine convictions that resulted in a 22-year prison sentence. At issue was whether Ressam should be convicted of carrying explosives during the commission of another serious crime, in Ressam's case, lying on a U.S. Customs form when he crossed the border in December 1999.

SNIP

The San Francisco-based 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had set aside Ressam's conviction on the explosives count. The appeals court said the law required proof that the explosives were carried "in relation to" the underlying crime of filing a false form. Prosecutors established no such relationship, the appeals court said.

I immediately jumped up as fast as I could and the snake wandered off down the slope.

You'd have to pry me off the moon after something like that. I'm not afraid of snakes in general, but I ain't ashamed to say that the deadly poisonous ones scare the stuff outta me.

This one time (no, it wasn't at band camp) I was out in the Nevada desert drinking alone (won't get into the details, but I was REAL angry about something).

Anyway, I went out there at about 1am, picked a comfy spot to sit, and started drinking my warm beer. It wasn't until the sun came up, and it was time for me to get moving, that I found that I had been sitting on one of these all those hours.

On a side note, everyone would spend a clear night out in the desert, miles away from any city lights, and just stare at the sky. It is truly a wonder to behold, a humbling image I will never forget.

The sunrise wasn't too shabby either.

re: #359 Sarge1984 It is! The museum I mean! Tombstone is now just a tourist trap. But my dad actually graduated from Tombstone High School and I was in Tucson maybe
10 years ago for a good friend's wedding and decided to take a day trip there. Much of the "original" Tombstone burned to the ground in the early 1900's but was faithfully restored (they say) cause they bring in so many tourists with little brains and lots of cash to see where the Gunfight at the OK Corral took place! And that's a ripoff too, cuase it didn't take place in the OK corral, but in an alleyway about a block away off what's now called Allen Street.
Anyway, we got stopped by Border Patrol Agents - who had a line of nearly 50 cars held up, walking along and asking folks in the car if they were American. Smart ass that I am (I wasn't driving) I said something like, damn it honey, we're headed Toward Mexico, I told you to take a right back there! The BP agent was not amused.
Anyway, my Dad's highscool is - according to a very nice vice-principal, exactly the same as when he attended in during the 1930's - and the Boot Hill outside of town is in fact the real thing!

tarantula?

Yeah, a tarantula burrow. That picture is not a good representation, as most burrows have a lot more webbing around the outside. That type of tarantula uses that webbing to detect prey that is walking above. When some small critter walks across the webbing the tarantula springs from the hole and drags its prey back inside.

I guess mine was to full to bother, or just didn't want to get a taste of the Behemoth. I probably would not have thought to look under my rear for one had it not been for the MANY other ones all around that became obvious when the sun came up.

re: #382 Bob in Breckenridge

Here's a description.

We had them in Jersey when I was a kid. My mom loved the sound of them, but had never seen them. One time, my brothers collected some and put them in a coffee can and brought them home for her, thinking she'd love to have them around the yard.

Well, Mom's a little phobic about snakes, or anything that resembles a snake. And these little guys look like tiny snakes when they poke their heads out of a coffee can.

Anyway, Mom moves a lot quicker than normal under the influence of a "thought I seen a snake" induced adrenaline surge....

To this day, my brothers feel badly about that.

I apologize in advance for going "on-topic"

I had clients calling all last week to ask me where their icons went.

I can't swear that it was SP3 that messed up their machines, but something had corrupted their profiles. One just restarted and everything was okay, the others had to have a system restore done on their machine (some, primarily those who didn't use Outlook, just lived with it and put the icons back on their screen).

405 mfarmer1  Tue, May 20, 2008 2:38:37am

Can't run 16bit DOS programs through RDC anymore...not sure what that has to do with terminal services/RDC, but they're not working. Removing SP3 didn't solve it either. Had to wipe out and reinstall XP Pro on the host machines with SP2. The "updated" interface version of RDC sucks too.

406 Tamron  Tue, May 20, 2008 3:00:44am

Re: SP3 upgrade......

MS recommends getting all your system drivers updated in conjunction with your SP3 install, which is sensible. I upgraded to SP3 on 2 home machines (an AMD and an Intel) and had some glitches (3 non-repeating Blue Screen of Death on the Intel), almost all of which disappeared after upgrading from 1GB to 2GB of RAM as well as downloading and upgrading all of the latest hardware and software drivers for my system, which I should have done long ago anyway. Some of them were really outdated and I didn't even know it.

Easy driver-fix solution: I got the Driver Detective program, and really love it because it scans your system, checks all drivers, and on your specific command it downloads and installs the latest individual drivers for your system, one at a time. Driver Detective grabs these updated drivers from DD's personal website storage area, where they evidently have previously gone thru the trouble to acquire and archive a pot-full of all the drivers you can ever need, from a vast range of companies.

Slick and easy -- sure beats me trying to go to each company's website and finding the latest drivers myself, especially if I don't even know exactly what model of video card, audio card or network card etc. that I have installed. DD takes a little time to use because understandably most important drivers require a system reboot after install, but that's not Driver Detective's fault. Wish I'd have found DD a few years ago. Five stars.

SP3 still has some slowdowns with Windows Explorer (carryovers from SP2, incidentally) that I haven't yet pinpointed, but otherwise it's like MS advertised, staying in the background doing its job. The other night my (Intel-based) computer was running OK, but it curiously refused to shut down via the normal means so I had to hold the power butten down for 5 seconds to shut it off. Started up fine the next day. Haven't a clue what that one was about.

By the way, whenever you do any significant un-installing and installing, make sure that you regularly save your System Restore information as you go (to Undo what you've done, if necessary), and also run a registry-cleanup program like Registry Mechanic to clean up loose ends in the registry. I un-installed some not-needed programs before installing the SP3 upgrade, and made sure that I ran Registry Mechanic at that point so as to give SP3 the cleanest registry possible, as a foundation. You'd be surprised at what kind of 'loose ends' are still hanging around in your registry after you remove or un-install programs.

I keep good backups using Acronis TrueImage and/or XXCOPY, and I also use Sunbelt Software's recent new Beta VIPRE combination antivirus/spyware product, plus their firewall. They work well with each other and notify me of anything suspicious, but I like it that way versus having Obambi or Pelosi-style security programs that dish out blind permissions behind my back, stuck in appeasement mode.

Everything seems to be running well now, except after my last Firefox upgrade it doesn't want to start sometimes, when I click the icon. I don't know if that's SP3 or Firefox's fault. Firefox's version 3 upgrade might take care of that, I just don't know yet. Not a biggie.

One last thing -- plug your computer(s) into a battery-backed power supply. They're cheap these days, and if your house gets even a 1-second power 'hit' at the wrong time, crashing your hard drive, the labor it might take to get your data back could cost you a lot more than the cost of a good UPS (Un-interruptable Power Supply) battery system. It's a pleasant reward now, when my house lights flicker and my computers are sitting there still happily humming away without rebooting.
.

409 Clutch  Tue, May 20, 2008 5:56:38am

Installed SP3 on three of my machines with no issue other than some complaining about an older, unused wireless driver (which has since been deinstalled and the moaning went away.) Kinda miss the 'address' bar that I had in the taskbar, but I didn't use it all that much, plus there is a freeware fix. So far, so good...

I had more problems with Ubuntu 7.xx doing an automatic upgrade to 8.04. I have an older Dell laptop that I use for Ubuntu testing and had the wireless working fine in U7. The upgrade to 8.04 broke the wireless setup and I was unable to get the recommendations in the forums to do anything to fix it (short of the suggestion to do a complete reinstall. How Microsoft-ish... :-( ; in fact it broke 8.04 so bad that I yanked the hard drive out and stuck in another drive from the laptops dead twin that had XP SP3 and got it back up and running. Looks like I might have to wait a while for Ubuntu to get its act together with the wireless on 8.04 before I try Ubuntu on a laptop again. As far as a desktop alternative, 8.04 is fine.

Of course, the only system that "does not play well with others is"....guess. I shall throw a party when Microsoft finally goes the way of the Yugo. (Same quality)

Granted Vista and driver mfgs had a rough first year, but it runs fine now.

I'm sorry 'bout yous guys who've had probs. I've posted a few spinoff links to sp3 issues in hopes users would wait a few weeks for a bug shakeout.

416 Uncle Joe  Tue, May 20, 2008 12:30:11pm

I installed SP3 about a week ago and have had no problems at all. In fact, it's made a voip phone I've got more stable. I have no doubt that some people have had problems with SP3 considering there are millions of users downloading it but there are few things the tech press and Microsoft haters enjoy more than dumping on the latest release of any kind by the e-e-e-vil Microsoft. (This isn't aimed at Charles, BTW, I'm just sayin'...no problems here and I don't think they're as widespread or chronic as some would have us believe.)

It is an upgrade. Charles hates everything about Microsoft, he is not a un-biased source of anything Windows. This and the link is just typical anti-Microsoft FUD.

I've had some problem with XP SP3 in regard to network printing to a HP LaserJet 4100n. It saw the printer, but nothing ever came out, except immediately after running the HP diagnostic, then it stopped again. Upgrading to the latest (4-1-08) HP Universal driver mitigated the problem.
