The irony in this is that this person accuses of lgf of profiting off of divisiveness when in actuality it profits off of those who oppose terrorism and this one post is profiting off of hating people for practicing their freedom of speech. One is legit, the other is the rant of some random idiot.

Lefty loves to hate.
I see that word all over the Leftosphere. They 'hate' this, they 'hate' that.
They 'hate' just about everything!
I hardly ever see that word bandied about here at LGF. We disagree with positions, policies, and certain ideologies...but rarely do we ever 'hate' someone or something.
Lefty's heart is filled with hate...it must really suck to be them.

Twitter 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous digging.
Or to take arms against a sea of bloggers,
And by opposing end them? To die: to sleep;
No more; and by a dig to say we end
the heart-ache and the thousand natural digs
That flesh is heir to, "tis a diggumation

WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court on Monday ruled against an Algerian convicted of conspiring to detonate explosives at Los Angeles International Airport during the millenium holiday travel rush.
In its 8-1 decision, the court upheld Ahmed Ressam's conviction on an explosives charge, one of nine convictions that resulted in a 22-year prison sentence. At issue was whether Ressam should be convicted of carrying explosives during the commission of another serious crime, in Ressam's case, lying on a U.S. Customs form when he crossed the border in December 1999.

I think this is the first peeing thread I've seen on here...
6:28 p.m. A man who complained that he’d been assaulted and his backpack stolen at an I Street store was no day at the beach himself, with his mohawk hairdo, blue trench coat and verbally abusive comments. He wasn’t helpful in resolving the complaint, and was asked to leave.9:29 p.m. In the same parking lot, two booze-emboldened men harassed passing women, setting a bad example for their canine companion. Then they wandered on.
9:33 p.m. Maybe it was the same free-lance theoretical physicists, who, just minutes later, performed practical experimentation with fluid dynamics against the wall of an antiquarian bookstore in the 1000 block of H Street.
Heh.

Souter, the Gay Priest, and Breyer, the Quilty White Richman, are really intellectually challenged. That is why they constantly stretch the legal envelope to include their proclivities. One related point from Richard Landes (in the books spinoff link above).
"This absolutizing of cultural diversity, in which any criticism of another culture’s values becomes a form of racism is one of the great failures of “progressive” thought, and I do think a significant role can be attributed to Edward Said’s Orientalism in which any form of “othering” is a form of racism. This is particularly true of any discussion of honor-shame culture, which in turn makes any condemnation of honor-killing problematic. And, of course, since no progressive can possibly support honor-killings — especially feminists — it most often elicits a deafening silence."

OK, who's fluent in French idioms?
I just came into possession of a cute tea cup from France that has this phrase on it:
"Le plus fort l'emporte"
Direct literal translations ("The strongest carries it") don't exactly make sense. My best guess is that it is an idiomatic expression that means basically "The strongest prevail." It's a commemorative cup from the French bicentennial in 1989, so I suspect it was a famous Revolutionary slogan from 1789. Hmmm.
Anyway, hoping some native Francophone here can set me straight. My high-school French has failed me yet again.

re: #200 x-ray
Freedom isn't free and the current crop of lefties will only sacrifice others too attain power.
I think that may be why they hate the military so much. Soldiers put their own lives on the line for their ideals. Leftists and Fascists brainwash others to die for their ideals.
The Citizen Soldier of a free nation is living proof that the ideology and worldview of the Leftist is wrong. The Leftist wants to believe that a soldier is an essentially mindless thug who robotically obeys their political masters regardless of the consequences. In fact it is the mindless thug that the Leftists (and parasites in general) needs in order to inflict their will upon their productive subjects.
The Soldier on the other hand must be actively conscious in order to survive on the battlefield and carry out his mission. Every one of them, from the individual rifleman to the commanding general must constantly perform the Boyd Cycle, the Observe-Orient-Decide-Act loop, as quickly as possible in the course of the conflict.
The Soldier, being mentally active as a virtue, can see through the reams of nonsense emitted by the Leftist demagogue. And is thus feared and hated by the Left in general.
The Thug on the other hand may be useful to the Leftist ruler but is utterly useless on the battlefield.
(BTW, I happen to agree with Dr. John Ray that Leftists and Fascists are essentially two versions of the same thing.)

It's about the T and V, but I suppose the same argument could be made about computers.
The argument for computer being like tv only goes so far though. I remember hearing about a study where parts of the brain were measured for use- one area of the brain was used for reading and radio, where another part was used for tv. Tv is more passive, where reading and radio were more stimulating, because the imagination has to be used to visualize what the brain is taking in. To that extent, computers are less like tv, and more like radio. But I suppose if you did nothing on your computer but watch videos from youtube, then yeah- the computer would be not much different than tv.

Nope, good guess though - apparently in the late 1870's or maybe late 1890's a coal miner who's name was Bill Blizzard was working in a union coal mine in northwest West Virginia and had heard about all the deaths, injuries, company stores and shit going on in south east Virgina, where the Owners of the coal mines refused to allow workers to unionize. So he organized a "militia" of about 2,000 union coal miners to go down to the southeast part of the state with the idea of compelling Coal Mine owner's to allow unionization.
Said Coal Mine Owner's hired around 3,000 professional gunmen to stop them at the top of a hill in the middle of a forest.
Blizzard had his men wear red handkerchiefs around their necks so they wouldn't accidentally shoot each other!
Got it from a documentary called "Hillbilly's The Real Story" on the History Channel tonight - about the Scots-Irish who pushed into Appalachia and settled it. Good show, too.

Well, we run into a problem here. If Stupidium is an element, then it can't be composed of other substances. If it is composed of other substances, then it is a compound molecule, and cannot be assigned an element number.
More research required.

Well, Stupidium is a molecule rather than a periodic element. It is comprised of two atoms of nihilism and three atoms of leftism. Thus N2L3.
Also, the numbering of periodic elements is not based on order of discovery, but on their atomic weight.
With all this in mind, I will finally get around to answering your original question:
Full studies have not yet been conclusive as to the exact atomic weight of nihilism and leftism, but it is the resounding consensus of the scientific community that both will eventually be placed on the periodic table somewhere between #0 and #-10, as both carry no weight whatsoever.

I beg to differ. Recent experiments carried out ny researchers at the haakondahl Institute indicate that stupidity is indeed an element, and is present in both Nihilism and Leftism. While theoretically there are configurations of Leftism which contain no stupidity, this has never been observed in nature, and can be found only in dubious media reports and the back pages of advanced University-level texts. Many graduate papers are predicated upon the existence of Leftism without Stupidity, but despite repeated experiments, this remains, ahem! "just a theory".
Nihilism, on the other hand, absolutely implies stupidity.

it was evidently present on the "Long March", but extrapolations from that data are difficult.
The Long March is an excellent example of stupidium. However, because so many subjects in the experiment expired - both during the march and in the several years afterward - it is difficult to determine the value of it.
With one exception - the progress of life on Formossa, aka Taiwan. There is a good example of the fruits of the Great March.

With one exception - the progress of life on Formosa, aka Taiwan. There is a good example of the fruits of the Great March.
i could opine that Formosa is the antithesis of the "Great March" experiment, or the "control", if you will. however, the case could be made that it actually is the experiment, whereas the "Great March" and all that came after, up through today, are the ultimate "control" which proves the validity of the Formosa experiment and it's outcome.
it could also be that i'm a verbose punster who will go to any lengths for a bad one or a scotch & water.

re: #304 haakondahl
I beg to differ. Recent experiments carried out ny researchers at the haakondahl Institute indicate that stupidity is indeed an element, and is present in both Nihilism and Leftism. While theoretically there are configurations of Leftism which contain no stupidity, this has never been observed in nature, and can be found only in dubious media reports and the back pages of advanced University-level texts. Many graduate papers are predicated upon the existence of Leftism without Stupidity, but despite repeated experiments, this remains, ahem! "just a theory".
Nihilism, on the other hand, absolutely implies stupidity.
I am afraid you are arguing your point without understanding the difference between stupidity (a concept) and Stupidium (a compound molecule) Stupidium is composed of* two atoms nihilism and two atoms leftism. Thus the scientific abbreviation N2L3.
However, I must admit that I am no expert in this field. You might be better served by presenting your arguments to Dres. Sharmuta and Syrah. (Peer Review FTW!)

Hee. Is the basis of the experiment "democracy"? If it is, then the Long March failed, and in a monumental way. However, Taiwan succeeded, perhaps because Chaing Kai Shek and his Guomindang brothers and sisters made it so.

their Port goes down very easy with little bits of chocolate. you take a small chuck of something dark & yummy, place it on your tongue to start melting, then take a sip of the port. swirl it around and repeat as necessary. you can reverse the order for a slightly different but equally enjoyable result.
Household 6 doesn't even *like* chocolate on a day to day basis, but will cheerfully consume (for her) mass quantities if there's port involved.

we have both: sales is 8.5 or higher, IIRC: some areas have added additional levies that are *supposed* to fund certain projects, but that's all BS once the legislature is in session. there's no problem so simple that we can't make it worse by throwing more money at it to keep doing the same things that failed previously.

the junta has shown, once and for all, that it it unfit, by any measure, to lead any of it's people. the down side to the hill tribes resistance movements is due in part to this intransigence.

The Karen have been freedom fighters for a very long time now. But some of the factions have forgotten that children are not acceptable warriors to use in the cause. And there are many Karen child warriors out there fighting and dying for their cause, when they should be in school in the city.
I just Skyped a friend in Bangkok and asked what was going on behind the scenes - she said there isn't much, because the Prime Minister of Thailand went over and met with the Junta and then came back and said "The Military government is doing their best to deal with the situation".

problem with all communist countries not just Burma or china is that they don't have an independent civil society to keep the gov't in check. no one to see if the building codes are more than just the paper they are printed on.
example in China no use of steel support beams or rebare in buildings that needed it, thus in major earthquake they fail. One of the reasons that during natural disasters people in communist/islamo fascist countries do so much worse.

No! Wow.
I love Caroline Glick:
The repeated assertion is that once Hizbullah and the Palestinians were placed in charge of territory, and didn't have Israel to kick around anymore, they would transform themselves from insurgents into respectable civilian authorities that would be compelled to abandon war in favor of building economies and keeping public order. The basic problem with this Israeli strategic assertion is that it ignores the basic interests of the other side. Hizbullah and the Palestinians have no interest in instilling order in the territories they wrest from Israeli control.
Preach it. The West's support for the "two-state solution" is predicated on this fundamental error, and that error says more about Western preconceptions and wishful thinking than it does about reality.

It is not cut and dried.
And child warriors are NEVER acceptable! Not 12 year old boys with weapons they struggle to carry, much less shoot!
an AR-15/M-16 weighs a whopping 8.5 pounds loaded. an AK a few pounds more. (never memorized that fact: i didn't carry it). a 12 year old can carry/operate one. shooting them is easy: they're designed to be that way. extra ammo/water/food is another issue, but that's life in the Infantry. so is shooting them accurately, but in combat, that's problematic anyway, as all studies have shown.
i say again: i am against "child warriors", but the Kachin and the Karens have been effectively abandoned by the "free world". that is our disgrace and any issues with "child warriors" pretty much falls back on us.
we didn't support them. we didn't give them the logistic support they needed to survive and defend their homelands. we didn't give them the diplomatic support they needed to get their independence. they, on the other hand, fought and died with us in WW2, when they likely could have just disappeared into the forest and let us sort it out amongst ourselves. where is *our* honor?
instead, we tacitly supported the government that strangled and killed them in their lands, and now, when their backs are too the wall, we should put the boot in because they made a hard call for survival?
i say we pick a side and stand for what this country was founded on, and let the usual suspects bitch. that's all they ever do anyway.

No, that is totally reasonable.
I like Obama a lot more than most people around here seem to, but it is obvious even to me having had a sip or two of the Kool-Aid that Obama married way beneath his intellect to get some needed authenticity. He is after all not only not a decscendent of African Americans who went through the horrors of slavery and Reconstruction and Jim Crow, but a descendent on both sides of slave owners and traders.

Clematis are big beautiful flowers usually 6-8 inches across that grow on a vine. My mother had a purple one (Jackmanii I think) that covered the entire outside of the porch. They look wonderfully festive and tropical but will even grow in Vermont.

May 12, 5/12, is now China's 9/11.

I'd argue that he got off easy compared to what he could have gotten. However, he has a point if you recall another individual who stole classified documents - down his pants - Sandy Berger.

I have to agree. Steve's kid did not impress me at ALL. He seemed like a smart ass and full of himself. But good, bad or indifferent, the kid is long since old enough to vote, old enough to serve in the military and I suspect old enough to drink, since he is a college junior. NOT a kid.
I mostly like Steve Doucey, but on this he is highly symptomatic of one of the biggest problems with the younger generation today. Their parents refuse to allow them to take any personal responsibility for anything, including their own words.

WHAT?! You miss Babba? WTF happened to Babba?
morning all. In the "The UK Is Still Lost and the EU Is Still a Totaliarian Piece of Shit" dept:
Home Office plans to create 'Big brother' database for phones calls, emails and web use
The Home Office will create a database to store the details of every phone call made, every email sent and every web page visited by British citizens in the previous year under plans currently under discussion, it has emerged.
The Government wants to create the system to fight terrorism and crime. The police and security services believe it will make it easier to access important data as communications become more complex.Telecoms firms and internet service providers (ISPs) have already been approached by the Home Office, which would be given customer records if the plans were realised.
The security services and police would then be able to access records for any individual over the previous 12 months by gaining permission through the courts.
Good luck storing that crap, suckers, let alone accessing it in any timely manner.

Same for the Border Patrol. It's disgusting.
Mr. Koran Shooter should be busted a couple ranks and that is all. My reason: You are apparently too impulsive to be a sniper, go back and work on thinking your actions through.
If anything more happens to him, I am going to buy a case of Korans (in Arabic, so they are real) and shoot a hole through each and every one. Just to be fair, I will shoot an equal pile of Bibles. Then I will glue them to a big old piece of plywood and call it art.

Italians bulldoze mosque, build memorial to Oriana Fallaci.
My Italian's kinda rusty, but here's a rough translation:
Goodbye, mosque! In its place, Oriana Fallaci Plaza. This was the decision of the city coundil of Oppeano (Verona) where yesterday, a bulldozer razed a building used by Muslims for prayer, where the Council intends to build a plaza named after the author of "The Rage and the Pride," which inspired a bitter confrontation with Islam. The decision to raze the structure, opened by the organization "For the Success of Muslims," was made by the municipal administration which acquired the land for 70 million Euros with the objective of transforming it into an open space for parking and a green zone. "Many citizens were not in favor of this project," said Alessandro Montagnoli, deputy mayor of Lega Nord, "because it might create conflicts among the residents."

You'd better play it safe and just shoot the Bibles. If you shoot Korans, the Museum Directors will seethe and the National Endowment for the Arts will cut off your funding.

One of the things that really bothers me about this is that there does not seem to be ANY proof that a member of the US military did this. All anyone has said is that the koran was found on the shooting range. It could just as easily been one of the Iraqis with access to that range who left it there.
To the best of my knowlege, I have not seen even one incident like this anywhere in the Mideast that has turned out to be true. And there are at least a couple of incidents of korans being deliberately burned for the propaganda value.

Absolutely. There is not a single line in the US Constitution prohibiting the shooting, tearing, burning or using for toilet paper ANY book. Just as much protected speech as burning the American flag is. The Uniform Code is a little different than civilian law, but still has to conform to the Constitution. There are no grounds at all to haul the kid up on charges on.
And since he has already been punished - which would have required at least a hearing - then any further hauling into "court" is double jeopardy. Specifically prohibited.

Servicemen cannot burn a flag, speak freely, or tear toilet paper if it runs counter to lawful orders they have been issued. Even a blanket order such as "Don't do anything blatantly stupid which a reasonable Soldier knows will just piss off the locals!" would be enough to put this guy in dutch.
So I actually support some NJP for the guy IF he has violated an order of that sort. But there is just no call for this to go the Judicial route (court-martial).
The Army should cast Ehren Watada from its eye before trifling with a mote like this Soldier who shot a Koran.

If you look through the links posted yesterday about this, one of them had a link to the story on al-arabiyeh I think it was. They had pictures. though I really should say picture, since it was just one small picture with 4 or 5 thumbnails that one could not even blow up to examine closely. Matter of fact, if you look through my comments from yesterday, I remarked on that.
What I did see was this - appears to be in Arabic BUT - the holes are very small and very neat. Not at all what you would expect from the hardware our military carries. Might be a pistol, but only officers and the Duty Officer carry pistols. Also, there were two pictures showing the "bullet holes" but the holes on one page did not seem to me to line up with the holes on the other page. No cover was shown, so they book really could have been almost anything in Arabic.

Thanks, I missed all that.
The holes could be very neat using US weaponry. It depends on the range. I would assume standard military "ball" may have been used, which has a full metal jacket. I own rifles in 5.56 NATO (.223 Rem) and 7.62 x 51 (.308 Win) which approximate the standard combat and sniper rounds, and either would leave a nice round hole at 200 yards, maybe 300.

I saw that also and noticed the small bullet holes. As far as I know, sniper rifles are .50 cal. Having fired one of those once upon a time, I can tell you the hole left in that book would have been a hell of a lot larger (the book would not have stopped a .50 cal) - and why were there so many? Did the guy use a .22 just for practice?

Rhetorical musing.
It's a book.
The rest of the civilized world, complains in unison with those so offended by said actions about the book.
Tear down ancient sculptures, desecrate some of the most holy places in the world to Christianity, and consider just a fractional percent of what they have done to Jewish antiquity, but the civilized world is on eggshells because of a book.
Like I said, the world is on a collision course.
Because sooner or later, sane people (who used to be represented by a free press, clear thinking intelligentsia, and rationale academics) will be left to having defend themselves.

The thing is, your ordinary enlisted person would not have routine access to anything other than standard military issue. An officer might and a non-com serving as Duty Officer would have a pistol, but some E3 out on the line does not. And usually ranges are supervised. I've never heard of anyone being allowed to just go out to some military range and fire away.

And since he has already been punished - which would have required at least a hearing - then any further hauling into "court" is double jeopardy. Specifically prohibited.
Not true. The only "punishment" this Soldier has received, to my knowledge, is a transfer and a letter of reprimand. Neither was the result of an Article 15 or a court martial. Those are admininstrative actions.
The Constitution doesn't say you can't be "punished" more than once for the same act. It says you can't be tried more than once for the same crime. Big difference.

I could be wrong on this--a little rusty, and never had to deal with any of my guys making this choice but...
I believe that NJP is actually like a two-party agreement to binding resolution outside of the Judicial process. Anytime a Serviceman is offered NJP, he may decline it and opt for a Court-Martial. But that's typically a stupid idea. Very stupid.
Hidden in that deal is the fact that the Command has offered the NJP, which I believe removes their opportunity (if the NJP is actually carried out) to go the Judicial route.

As others have already mentioned, small, neat holes are exactly what you get from either a 5.56mm service rifle or a 7.62mm sniper rifle.
As for pistols, you'd be surprised at how many Soldiers carry them in Iraq and Afghanistan today. They are in no way restricted to officers.
The Soldier in question is a sniper. Snipers always carry pistols as backup weapons, because you can't shoot someone effectively at close range with a scoped sniper rifle. Same goes for machine gunners. Armored vehicle crew members also carry pistols.
Anyway, I've spent the last four years training units that are deploying overseas, and I've seen as much as one out of two Soldiers in a given unit carrying pistols (often in addition to their standard M-16/M-4).

Not going to happen. He received a General Officer leter of reprimand already, and was returned to CONUS. If he were going to be tried, they wouldn't have already taken those actions (not because they couldn't, but because it would be redundant--no point in putting a letter in the file of someone you plan to put in jail).

The news accounts are that an Iraqi cop found the book at the range.
Again, I don't put it past them to fake something like this (either the incident or the photos), but the evidence seems against it in this case.
As for grouping... well, depends as what range and with what weapon. If he was at 200 yards with a scoped M24, sure, I'd expect better grouping. If he was just spitballin' it with an M4 with iron sights - that's pretty good shooting, actually.

Not going to happen. He received a General Officer leter of reprimand already, and was returned to CONUS. If he were going to be tried, they wouldn't have already taken those actions (not because they couldn't, but because it would be redundant--no point in putting a letter in the file of someone you plan to put in jail).
He should probably start thinking about what he's going to do when his current enlistment runs out, because his military career is over, but I'd be surprised if any other action is taken against him.
That is what I said earlier - he's already been punished. Many news stories, however, are reporting that he is going to be taken into court over it. Reuters, Yahoo and Fox are all carrying this as coming from Bush. So, either the dude IS going to now be hauled into court or all hell is going to break loose because he isn't.

You know, the more I think about this, the more I getting fucking steamed.
How dare this fucker allow funds to come from a country that we have eliminated diplomatic ties with, the same money that can buy air time, ad time, to influence our election?
The same country counterfeiting our currency to purchase weaponry to kill our guys fighting for Iraqis as we speak.
The same country, where American companies have been punished by our own government for doing business?
I better quit now.
I know it will get me banned.

over on the right, under Legal Complaince, it says you have to be a US Citizen or permanent resident. So, I guess you could be an ex-pat with internet access in Iran?
Yea, that's it.

OK, I'll bite -- why do you hate 9 mm?
Ah, here comes the religious war...
Answer: Because the 9mm Luger round wasn't intelligently designed!

So, how is this investigated? Which agency? Can an internet savy citizen do it?
Americans would be very interested to know.

Oh yeah, LOTS and LOTS of Americans living in Iran and Cuba right now and just couldn't wait to get back to the States to contribute to Obama.
My ass - his friends in the M.E. (like that Phone Bank in Gaza that Charles had a thread about) just clicked "American Citizen" - I'd wager a TON of money has reached Obama's campaign coffers through what would be considered illegal means it the true donars were known.
I could not agree with you more. And I think that he should be forced to account for every dime by country of donation.

Okay, I'll take your word for it. Wasn't allowed back when I was a good Army wife.
There's actually a very practical reason for the number of pistols people carry in Iraq and Afghanistan: There's a rule on most FOBs that you have to be armed at all times, unless you're out doing PT.
Many Soldiers have an M-249 or an M-240B machine gun as their primary weapon.
Trust me, when you're walking across the FOB at 0300 to go to the latrine, or going to eat at the DFAC, you do not want to have to lug an M-240B around with you.

Follow the money. We know Hillary had China donating via "Hsu", I guarantee that Mr. Obamessiah is getting a cash flow from Middle East contacts."

I don't think he will be executed, but I think that he is going to be hauled into court on trumped up charges with little or no proof, and then he is going to be thrown in the brig for the duration of the useful part of his natural life, just like the Haditha Marines and the Border Patrol agents. Scape goat for political purposes.
You're joking, right? Nobody could write this seriously.

Don't Trolls automatically become kosher when bbq'd?
I thought I heard that somewhere. As long as they are properly "dressed" of course.
