Tech Note: Unusual Robot Surge Detected

Tue, May 20, 2008 at 3:25:19 pm PDT

All day I’ve been watching the online visitor count suddenly jump way up, but without the referrals that would indicate a link from a high volume site. It’s happened four or five times, and the cause in each case has been a web crawler trying to load every page at the site as quickly as possible, with dozens of hits per second. I’ve been blocking them as they happen, and so far the IP addresses have traced to:

United Arab Emirates
China (a whole block of addresses)
Vietnam
Netherlands

The China bot was using powerlineblog.com as a referrer, probably as a weak disguise.

Something’s going on out there on the innernut.

The ones from China are likely bots looking for security holes.
There have been a lot of web sites hacked with malware in the past few months.
But they'll be looking for holes in common software, not custom software.

New at zomblog:

Anti-John Yoo protest at Boalt Hall law school graduation

On Saturday, May 18, U.C. Berkeley’s School of Law held its graduation ceremonies. As graduates approached Boalt Hall for the reception, they were greeted by protesters.

In fact, more than just “greeted” — they had to run a gauntlet of demonstrators just to reach the entrance to the party.

Why would anyone protest a law school graduation? Because Boalt Hall is home to controversial law professor John Yoo, who in 2002 co-authored memos which theorized that the President of the United States would not be liable under the War Crimes Act if under times of national emergency he sanctioned “enhanced interrogation techniques” to get information from terrorism suspects. Setting aside whether or not “enhanced interrogation techniques” count as torture, and whether or not Yoo’s opinions were legally sound, it should be noted that the Bush administration formally repudiated the memos, and the Supreme Court rejected some of Yoo’s arguments, so the memos’ actual importance seems to be wildly overblown. Yoo’s opinion seems to be based on the argument that Al Qaeda terrorism suspects are unlawful combatants and thereby are not protected by the guidelines of the Third Geneva Convention, which they themselves violate — so they would have no legal basis for complaint if they were mistreated in custody. I’m not going to get involved in the cacophonous debate over the significance of these papers, which have come to be called “torture memos” by Yoo’s detractors. The internet is awash in information — and even greater amounts of misinformation and disinformation — about Yoo’s opinions, so if you’re interested you can Google his name for an avalanche of conflicting claims. This photo essay is just a report on the protest of May 18, not a legal brief.

Most of the protesters seemed to be members of various communist groups — primarily World Can’t Wait, but also (as seen here) the Spartacus Youth Club, among others.

Also present was a large contingent of 9/11 Truthers.

...etc.

From Strategy Page:

The Russian attacks against Estonia were the result of Estonia moving a statue, honoring Russian World War II soldiers, from the center of the capital, to a military cemetery. The Estonians always saw the statue as a reminder of half a century of Russian occupation and oppression. Russia saw the statue move as an insult to the efforts of Russian soldiers to liberate Estonia, and enable the Russians to occupy the place for half a century. The basic problem here is that most Russians don't see their Soviet era ancestors as evil people, despite the millions of Russians and non-Russians killed by the Soviet secret police. The Russians are very proud of their defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, ignoring the fact that the Soviet government was just biding its time before it launched its own invasion of Germany and Europe in general.

It was a statue of Josef fucking Stalin. I don't see what the "insult" was, since the Russians were knocking down lots of their own Stalin idols not that long ago.

Zombie...if you are in the neighborhood of UC Davis...

May 31, Saturday -- Via videoconference from Sudan, three former Guantanamo Bay detainees will talk for the first time to a U.S. audience about their prison experiences at a May 31 benefit for the Guantanamo Testimonials Project, a UC Davis-based effort to catalog accounts of prisoner abuse from print and broadcast sources around the world.

The event will take place at 8 p.m. in the Sciences Lecture Hall at UC Davis. Tickets are $10.

The former detainees -- Adel Hasan Hamad, Salim Adam and Hammad Ali Amno Gad Allah -- will be interviewed by Amy Goodman, executive producer and host of the independent news program "Democracy Now!" Goodman has won numerous journalism awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Prize for International Reporting.

The statue in question is of an anonymous Red Army soldier.

Hillary Rodham Clinton, you’ve got a friend in Dirty Harry.

Though a longtime follower of John McCain — dating back to the Arizona senator’s 2000 run against George W. Bush in the GOP primary — Clint Eastwood thinks Clinton deserves some serious respect. And enough already with the calls for her to quit.

“Everybody’s trying to talk her into folding, but it doesn’t seem like the spirit of Americana,” Eastwood told Politico before heading to France’s Cannes Film Festival, where his period kidnapping drama “Changeling,” starring Angelina Jolie, had its world premiere Tuesday. China's got over 70,000 dead - probably more, and a generation of children in one region nearly wiped out - and those are IT. One child policy and the communists didn't build the schools right that the families had to put their only heirs into. China's population is close to imploding, from collapse of the upcoming generation. One child families losing that child through accidents, disease, bad medicine, poor justice system (dying in jail wrongfully accused) now mass casualties from earthquakes. Just how much of this spiritual abuse can families endure? How long will it be until the dead-ended population revolts? The Chicoms have taken erverything from them.
But, nooo. Spend time cyberhacking the Men of the West.

re: #82 wanumba

I don't fear the so-called "China century" the experts say we are entering. I think they've just about peaked. You are correct -- their demographics are a mess, the "elderly bomb" of the next few decades will hit China harder than even the worst nations of a depopulating Europe. The unfunded liabilities of the upcoming retirement of China's baby boom [yes... they had one too] are supposedly greater than the entire projected GDP of China by 2020. They opened up their economy two generations too late, and are consequently too far behind the curve to catch up.

85 hazzyday  Tue, May 20, 2008 6:42:47pm

re: #82 wanumba

My experience in China. A lot of nice people seriously abused by a politically correct power system. A total lack of safety and health standards. People were afraid of offending the government. The food there was much better than anything you can get here in the US. Huge cities that we have never heard of. Pollution that is probably 100 times worse than anything you ever saw in Los Angeles. The air in places was choking. There was a certain distrust of foreigners.

I can see how the Chinese economy is essentially a rube goldberg machine that dumps it's waste into the oceans. I was warned not to get any Yellow River water on me because of parasites. The locals brushed their teeth in it. A river is an easy garbage drain to float stuff to Hawaii.

They can make money off this botting and have no real consequences. A very polluting country.

re: #84 stevieray

re: #85 hazzyday
Yes! Let's expand for the general readership more, along the lines of what you both mentioned ...
A US school was explaining that they wanted to pick up a different foreign language and mentioned Chinese. Like for what? It's excellent if one wants to work in China, a necessity of course. But a global language? Noooooo waaaaaaay. These MSM/Progressive Left pumping of China as the next great economy ignores the internal stresses. They make a similar mistake with India for different reasons - totally uncomprehending as to the ball and chain that's India's rigid caste system on their national progress/expansion/growth.
China cannot get very far with a majority of their population over 45 - and older than that, with a declining number of babies.
See how long it took China's military to "hike into the worst-hit earthquake zones?" Hike? Hike? How many Chinese have died who could have lived IF rescue had arrived in a timely manner? We know it's in the thousands.
Pollution? Egads. If they don't care enough to build a decent school structure in an earthquake zone, what care do they have for pollution? But shut the USA down!
In New Delhi - in December, the impenetrable smog blanket over the city is suspended hardly above head height, coal fired electrical plants, wood fires and ugh! cremetoriums! And that was AFTER a big improvement of shifting public vehicles from petrol to CNG (Compressed natural gas).
Go back to the USA, see blue skies, view all the buildings - even to the top floors, no trash about, but yell yell yell at Americans while the rest of the world, especially and particularly, the communist regimes pollute as if there was no tomorrow. They do not care about human life and it shows in everything they do.

The China bot was using powerlineblog.com as a referrer, probably as a weak disguise.

The PowerLine Forum has been repeatedly hit by counterfeit-goods spammers lately. Every one traces back to Beijing. I've been filing complaints with their state-side upstreams and webhosts, as well as making reports to the FBI. No apparent results as yet.

A couple of weeks ago, Lucianne.com was brought down by a chinese attack. Don't know why they did it, don't know why they're doing it. But they are.

As long as none of the robots build models that look like Tricia Helfer that go into your mind and tell you that God loves you, you are OK.

Relax. It's just those Carnegie Mellon folks doing more research for their blog-analysis project.

Of course it's a fake. Worse, it's an obvious fake; these idiots think everyone is as stupid as they are.

Today's crop resolves to a registrant in Shanghai. But both are accessing the U.S. network via service providers - Beyond the Network and AKANOC Solutions - that are known to be havens for offshore spammers and scammers. Just do an ask.com search and read the results.

Compare Electricity Prices in your area. Texas Electricity is deregulated; you have the right to choose Texas Electric Rates from among many Texas Electric Companies.

A sane moral compass.
