Racist Ranting Moonbats Verbally Attacking Uniformed Soldiers in DC

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 9:56:46 am PDT

Michael Yon has a copy of a letter to military personnel from the Department of Transportation, warning about incidents in which soldiers in uniform have been verbally assaulted by crazy ranting moonbats while riding the Washington DC Metro.

Washington D.C.
Dept of Transportation Federal Transit Administration sends:

Recently, there have been local incidents in which military personnel have been verbally assaulted while commuting on the Metro. Uniformed members have been approached by individuals expressing themselves as anti-government, shouting anti-war sentiments, and using racial slurs against minorities.

In one instance, a member was followed onto the platform by an individual who continued to berate her as she exited the metro station. Thus far, these incidents have occurred in the vicinity of the Reagan National Airport and Eisenhower Ave metro stations on the yellow line, however, military members should be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times while in mass transit.

Should you be approached by any individuals expressing anti-government/anti-war sentiments, or any other types of direct verbal assault, immediately notify your local police jurisdiction. If riding metro, exit the train at the next stop, distance yourself from the individual, and notify the Metro Transit Police Department. ...

Here are a few friendly reminders of personal protective measures that can help you to stay safe:

- If possible, do not commute in uniform (military members)

- Do not display DoD building passes, “hot cards”, or personal identification in open view outside of the workplace

- Do not discuss specifics about your occupation to outside solicitors

- Always try to remain in well lit, well populated train cars if traveling via metro

- Be vigilant at all times!

Moonbats have the right to rant, yet

it is a PRIVILEDGE to serve and wear the uniform.

Keep your heads up guys, lots of us appreciate you.

The proper response to a close ambush is to immeadiately counter assault with maximum force and fire power.

It's truly a sad day when our fine troops face such disrespect and slander from the very citizens they protect. Especially in the capital of this great nation.

I'd say "shame on the left", but they're obviously devoid of any semblance of shame.

As a foreigner, every time I see a US military personnel during my trips to the US, I go by and thank him/her for their service, regardless of their ranks, their race, their creed and looks. The world, the free world I might say, owes an incredible debt to the USA.

Thank you US military for securing the world. For making the world a better place. Thanks!

So, members of the US Armed Service, whose job is to protect and serve the people of this grateful nation (well at least those who realize what a tough job they do and honor and respect their service), now have to watch their back in DC because a bunch of anti-American [deleted] have taken to verbally assaulting them.

Nice. Stay classy leftists.

As a former member of the armed forces, I find this very insulting and to be told that we have to back down and retreat from this kind of thing in our country that we are fighting and dying to protect is just wrong. People should respect our soldiers enough to leave them alone and take up grievances with the politicians, not the men and women in uniform. I would pity them if they tried this in say - China or Iran, or heck almost any country but ours.

One time I walked up to a lone young sailor in the airport. He was maybe all of 20, wearing his cracker jacks, very dark skinned, tall and lanky. When I walked-up to him, he had this befuddled look on his face like "why is this old white woman walking up to me?"

I thanked him for serving. The expresson on his face was first more befuddlement, then relief than sincere happiness.

I never miss an opportunity to personally thank a soldier. I hope it helps them get thru the times when the moonbats rant.

Same, same as in the Vietnam War era - had several friends who remained in the Active Reserve so they could earn a little extra cash and would travel to their once a month meetings in uniform and would be verbally assaulted and spit on. Of course, this was in New York City, circa 1973.

Must be why we had such a reputation for being violent people when we came back to the U.S.

It was here, at the Port of Oakland, where soldiers returning from Vietnam were spat upon by anti-war activists. The incident received so much publicity that it became a sort of modern urban legend -- that Vietnam vets were spat upon as they returned to the US, all over the country -- but as far as I know it actually only happened here.

The East Bay is ground zero for anti-American/pro-Communist sentiment.

Personally IMO they should augment the SOP sent out with:

Note: If all else fails wipe the metro trains windows clean with the face(s) of the attacker and mention to the arresting officer that it must have been a case of sudden PTSD brought on by the "fighting words" of the assailant. Under these circumstances all PTSD claimants will be sent to the beach for 7 days to rest and recover on TDY with full per diem.

I think you're right on the mark. They'll argue that it's 1st Amendment protected speech, forgetting once again, that those protections are not absolute. Just as one is not allowed to yell 'Fire' in a crowded theater when there is no fire - and has to accept the consequences for such poor judgment, a moonbat getting into the face of a uniformed service member and assaulting them should also expect to accept the consequences for that poor judgment. If not from the service member (who will follow orders), from others who witness the assault.

Meanwhile @ Coast Guard Academy ceremonies today;

Gathering of Eagles vs. Troop Slanderers

Approximately 100 protesters marched from New London to the Coast Guard Academy where Vice President Cheney is addressing Coast Guard Academy cadets at their commencement.

Protesters are lined up across the street from the Coast Guard. The patriotic group called the Gathering of Eagles arrived to counter protest and to welcome the families of the Cadets.

“We’re here to put a stop to this madness,” said Paul Schaffer of Norwich. “I have nothing against the Coast Guard. I’m a Navy veteran. We’re protesting the Vice President.”

Carolyn Van Zorge of New Jersey, a member of the Gathering of Eagles, compared the protesters march to those of the 1960’s. “We believe what they are doing is hurting our troops,” she said.

Jim Bancroft of Bristol is a Marine Corps veteran and a member of the Gathering of the Eagles. “We came to show respect for the families of the cadets and show that there are people that support them. You can disagree with the president all you want but to exercise your right of free speech by disrupting what is supposed to be a celebration is wrong and in a time of war it is giving aid and comfort to the enemy.”

Of course, the moonbats lie when they say they support the troops. More at the Courant;

Their message was countered by the more than 100 anti-war protesters, who gathered in the center of this waterfront city and marched silently to the sounds of a slow drum beat to the academy gates. They carried placards that said, "War is Death" and "Dick Cheney: War Criminal."

Jason Ortiz, a 24-year-old University of Connecticut student, arrived early dressed as the grim reaper.

"I'm against people getting slaughtered so other people can make this money off of it," Ortiz said.

That's right... the Coasties are making money off slaughtering who?

re: #108 Tricky Dick

per response on other thread about the same article:
If, if it makes it into law it will be thrown out by our own courts. While the actions being attacked are illegal under US jurisdiction we cannot pass laws (other than declaring war etc) that force the citizens of sovereign nation, or the nations themselves, to fall under US law while in their own territories.

The only chance that it has is that if somehow it is stretched to the "you come to US soil to do business and own assets here" to make them subject to this. I have a feeling that the high priced lawyers on the opposing side of the first case brought will get it thrown out though as some violation of international law etc. Otherwise it is an unwitting declaration of war against the world for the US to just pass a law to subject other sovereign nations to US law. (not counting UN resolutions etc)

A bill was passed into law during the 1980's that makes all US citizens subject to US law even when not on US soil irrespective of the local laws of other governments (i.e. if a US citizen went to Pakistan and trafficked heroin, or did other nasty things legal where they are but not in the US, the US could prosecute that person for trafficking etc). But there is a world of difference between that and what is proposed there and really is not a precedent for this.

My training says it all depends on the situation.

If you've got time and and the skill and they don't have kevlar helmets, go for a head shot.

If they have kevlar helmets and body armor, shot their legs out and then shoot them in the head.

If I don't have time, nor the skill (due to distance) for option #1, use your approach.

As my memory serves, whenever you draw your weapon, you don't shoot to maim, you shoot to kill.

I always recall, aim for the center of the mass. Vital organs.

As well, on the silhouette, we encouraged to include head shots, another vital shot.

I remember the cardinal rule, if you draw your weapon, you better be prepared to use it.

The training I have watched was for police, not military (Valhalla combat training) and the purpose was to stop the aggressor, not to necessarily kill.

#135 Iron Fist. Good point, the head or legs shot would be the only options in that case, when armed with a handgun, at least.

Admittedly, you might not have the time to make a decision. Then it's a 'hail bloody Mary' and fare-thee-well.

And that might be the most likely scenario, as these situations tend to develop quickly.

I don't work downtown, so I only ride the metro 1-2 times a month and I've never seen this happen. I've seen lots of men and women in uniform during commutes though (mostly the yellow/blue lines).

My guess is these are newbies not used to seeing people in uniform or college people here temporarily. Everyone else has gotten used to see uniforms (not just US military either) that it's no big deal. Everyone probably interacts with military personel, ex-military or US gov't employees on a daily basis.
Word of warning to these morons doing this: This is the DC area - there is a good chance one day you'll be outnumbered and your little "speak-truth-to-power" moment will backfire.

If you're excusing the inexcusable assaults on military people because the offender is a "newbie" or college kid, or somehow not USED to seeing uniforms, that is way too progressive.

Our military have every right to travel anywhere, anytime, without harassment.

The battalion commander, armed with an M1911 .45 cal just shoved the pistol against a German soldier and squeezed the trigger. Worked a LOT better than a

It takes less energy to squeeze the trigger on an M1911 than it takes to stab or slash with a knife.

If you've got time and and the skill and they don't have kevlar helmets, go for a head shot.

If they have kevlar helmets and body armor, shot their legs out and then shoot them in the head.

This differs drastically from any self-defense/combat shooting instruction I've ever seen.

Seems highly risky to me to assume that even a skilled gunfighter can consistently make head shots and LEG shots under combat stress.

Sounds like you need more time on the practice range. All my NRA instructors, of late, have said "Head shots are best." But the caveat that with, "if you're good enough."

My thoughts on dealing with people in full ballistic armor stem from Viet Nam and the techniques employed by the VC; shoot them in the foot and then, when they're rolling around on the ground in agony....put them out of their misery.

Sort of like the way the infantry deal with tanks; immobilize them than kill them.

A few months ago, a fascinating article was published about armed police engagements in which shots were fired.

It went something like this:

In an encounter with an armed perpetrator, a trained police officer firing his department issued hand gun will hit his target approximately half the time from a distance of 10 feet.

I'll look for it, and post if I find. The actual statistics are eye-opening.

With infamy without a name,

And dare decry great hearts who die,
Battling for right and truth.
Woe to the land which, heeding them,
Lets avarice gain the day,
And trusting gold it's right to hold,
Lets manly might decay.
Let us, while willing yet for peace,
Still keep our valor high,
So when our time of battle comes,
We shall not fear to die.
Make love of life and ease be less,
Make love of country more.
So shall our patriotism be
More than an empty roar.
For death is nothing, comfort less,
Valor is all in all;
Base nations who depart from it,
Shall sure and justly fall.

I commute on Metro every day (Orange Line) and have thankfully never seen anyone be disrespectful to uniformed personnel. Nor would I stand for it if I did. It sounds like it's the Yellow and Blue lines (which run out to the Pentagon and Reagan National) that are having the most issues.

Personally, I feel BETTER when uniformed military personnel are on the car. Their mere presence keeps everything calm. Asking our own troops to hide their status in the Metro system in our own capital is just pathetic. Conversely, the absolute worst experiences I've had on the Metro involved convergences of 1) DC inner schools letting out and 2) anti-war/pro illegal immigrant rallies. Awful.

CQB - fighting technique developed by the SAS. The seals were aiming at body and head. The SAS go for what they call (Ithink) *tapping* if they can. This is where you put one round thro the teeth and out the base of the brain (sorry...) This is because if hostages are around a reflex pull on the trigger by a terrorist (or other) could kill them all. By tapping, the base of the brain is destroyed in a fraction of a second and this stops it.

For the last 10 years Blair and Brown have treated the Armed Forces and the Army in particular like shit. We have only heard little pieces in the press because it's all classified.
We have had instances IIRC concerning RAF personnel being verbally abused and that got in the papers. It didnot go down well, to put it mildly.
The only reason Brown is bringing up anything like this is because he is desperate. NuLabour took a pounding in the local elections, and that didn't cover all the councils. There is a bye-election due this week in Crewe so I'm just waiting to see if they get clobbered there *licks lips*.
I think he has been told (and has probably been told before) that unless he sorts out military housing, welfare and pay etc that he will have no Armed Forces at all. Experienced soldiers have been leaving in large numbers for years. It could also be that there has been a backlash from the Silent Majority over Blair and Browns treatment of our troops. We have heard very little in the papers.

I hope Mr. Yon has affidavits from each of these officers, together with video recordings, together with the officers blood type and dna samples because the left simply engages in brazen lies with respect to the hideous conduct of its fellow travelers. These are all 'anecdotal! Remember a year or so ago, maybe two years, the left started the "NO ONE EVER SPAT ON A MARINE DURING VIETNAM OR AFTERWARDS!" threads, where it seemed that anyone who made such an allegation was a liar, that no such reports ever occurred at the time of the incident, that unless you had the name, address, phone number, (serial number) of both the alleged soldier and the alleged spitter, then such incidents were fictitious and below the status of 'urban legends'. Here's a link to an even older article claiming such spitting to be a myth as well concocted in the 80s because we lost the war.

When I was active duty back in the late days of the cold war, we used to have alot of "Ami go home" protestors outside the front gate of the airbase in Germany where I was stationed. Well, we eventually did pack up our toys and go home. When I went back to the area for a visit 10 years later the waitresses and staff of the local gasthauses were wishing that US forces would come back. The economy suffered and believe it or not crime actually went up.
Here in Turkey Professional NCOs and Officers are authorized to carry sidearms off duty. Maybe the US military needs to go that route. I witnessed an incident in which a Turkish Navy PettyOfficer who Iwas speaking with at a pub excused himself to go pistolwhip some extremely drunk English guy who wouldn't leave his fiancee alone and actually tried to put his hands on her.

I suppose that the soldier/sailor/airman/marine you would defend would be a suitable witness.

On the other hand, I've found the camcorder in my Treo 650 VERY effective in catching miscreants at their worst. Caught one guy trying to assault me during his 'conduct' of a Board of Directors meeting. It's rather funny, watching him race from one end of the assembled tables to the other. And at each end, he encounters someone who decided to stand between he and me.

He finally decided on throwing an empty can of Dr. Pepper at me.

If he'd have reached me, I'd have 'cleaned his [proverbial] clock' and used the camcorder recording as evidence of 'self-defense'. Besides there were a score of witnesses to the incident; other attendees of this board of directors meeting of the non-profit corporation we all belong to.

And invite fights?

What then? You get fights. You win them, fair and square. They started it, they lost, case closed, right?

Think again.

It's a liberal city. The deck will be stacked against them. They will be convicted in the court of public opinion. The best of a lot of bad outcomes is that the prosecutor gets caught tampering with the evidence and the witnesses and has to resign. But what if he doesn't get caught? Then they get convicted again, and appeals drag on and on, and even if they win, their ruined.

A policy of avoiding fights between U.S. military and civilian nutcases, is best. That way, if a fight does come despite every effort to avoid it, it'll be much more clear who started it, and much easier to win in court.

We'll just say the moonbat(s) in question made racial slurs. Being Officially Oppressed Native Americans, the cops will probably thank us for not calling the ACLU.

Notice how the term "ISLAMOPHOBIA" has become a radical-Muslim rallying cry?

It's a double-edged sword.

Evidently they need to be reminded of that unforgivable racial crime, "KAFIROPHOBIA".

Then there's also "CHRISTOPHOBIA", "JOOOPHOBIA", "DHIMMIOPHOBIA", "BENEVOLENTOPHOBIA", "GENIUSOPHOBIA", 'FREECAPITALISTOPHOBIA", "HAPPYPERSONOPHOBIA", "ROCKETSCIENTISTOPHOBIA", "COLLEGEGRADUATEOPHOBIA", "DOUNTOOTHERSOPHOBIA", and especially "WOMENSRIGHTSOPHOBIA".

Terribly nasty sins, those, all in need of enforcing. Think we can enlist the help of the ACLU in this worthy cause?

Disgusting. If I ever see anyone behaving that way towards a member of our military I'd be hard pressed not to step in and kick some deserving idiot in the cojones.

re: #184 Warm Mountain

If this memo is true, it's an insult to the entire nation. In plain English, it advises the military to hide its loyalties in the national capital!

I stopped wearing my uniform to the Pentagon after being verbally assaulted on the Yellow line a couple of years ago. I find it interesting they are coming out with this now.

When the cops get there, claim they threw the first punch.

Keep in mind that there are security cameras in the Metro stations so the evidence might be against you.

That being said, I do wish the servicefolks could remove the gloves and start making examples out of some people.

To #87 and in general.
We are allowed to carry our arms, but no rifle is loaded in ANY public
place, and in army bases, they are only loaded by direct order or an
officer....
But carrying a weapon shouldn't be necessary to be granted the minimum courtesy (if not gratitude) granted to any working person. Dissent is a
right, but it shouldn't be abused or miss used.

Same thing happened in the 70's. We were told to be careful when out on leave wearing our uniform. I was commented to only once by a girl who asked how many babies I killed. I retorted "too many to count."

I proudly wear my USMC jacket or shirt to this day. I dare any liberal to say a word.

I'm 52 and can still kick liberal ass all day and never get tired.

#49 Zombie, #68 Real West, #134 LC La Wedgie, and others.

I actually was "spit" on in November 1967 on the campus of Boston University where the USAF had sent me for a course. Before the course, we were told to avoid provocations and wear our uniform only on Thursday.

I say "spit" on because the salivating coed who blocked my path barely got enough force behind her expectoration to hit my chin. Then, she ran away several yards to her waiting boyfriend and both scampered off. I was a bit startled, but it was more comical than anything else, watching then run away. This was before I had been to Vietnam. I guess Boston folks were just trend setters.

I've spent almost 20 years in the DC area, many of them commuting through the Pentagon Metro. I've never seen any incidents and I hope I don't. I think the Left decided they got a bad press during Vietnam and several months started a massive denial of any spitting incidents. I imagine their playbook now has specific instructions not to spit on uniformed individuals. None of the Vietnam era stories got much play beyond local papers. That explains why folks might have heard it in their area and thought just it an isolated incident. I told my Tac Officer and that was the end of it as far as I know.

I'm awaiting the judgment of Snopes and others on the latest. Some comments on Yon's site said it might be a hoax. It however has the sound of the stilted admin, don't play the brute lecture I got in Boston years ago. Time will tell.
