About That Huge Obama Rally in Oregon...

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 11:30:22 am PDT

You know that huge crowd that turned out for Obama in Oregon? What many media reports forgot to mention: Obama was immediately preceded by a free concert by a very popular band.

That band, The Decemberists, is known for using the National Anthem of the Soviet Union as an introduction at their concerts. I’m just sayin’.

UPDATE at 5/21/08 12:37:34 pm:

Reached for comment, Barack Obama didn’t state:

This whole notion that ... uh ... you can smear me and my kids by associating me with my associations with bands who ... uh ... associate themselves with the Soviet Union, who had the power to destroy the world 57 times, is ... uh ... offensive, and ... um ... not helpful when I’m just trying to unite this country with a message of hope and change. And change. Now lay off, sweetie. I’m trying to finish my arugula.

UPDATE at 5/21/08 3:30:08 pm:

Wikipedia Removes USSR Anthem Info from ‘Decemberists’ Page.

Well, the Million Man March was about a tenth the claimed number, so Obama's familiar with fuzzy math.

Obama's people have been quite good at getting crowds and favorable media treatment. Experts actually.

They'll get arenas but use only a fraction of the space - and the media reports that it was a full deck.

They'll get monster crowds, but ignore that the crowds were there to see a concert minutes earlier.

And the media willingly laps this stuff up.

Theme song? Check this out:

January 14, 2008 -- PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate's theme song.

As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z's "99 Problems" was blaring. In it, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."

Some listeners took it as a not-so-sly reference to Hillary.

"We didn't know he used that," a shocked Clinton spokesperson said.

Obama has no problem admitting he's a rap fan.

The differences between McCain, Hillary, and Obama:

John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Barack Obama were walking down a DC street when they came upon a homeless man.

John McCain gave the man his business card and told him to come to his office for a job. He then took $20 out of his pocket and gave it to the man.

Hillary was very impressed, so when they came upon another homeless man, she decided to help. She walked over to him and gave him directions to the welfare office. She then reached into John McCain's pocket and got out $20. She kept $15 for her administrative fees and gave the homeless man $5.

When they came upon yet another homeless man, Barack to him to "have hope...change is coming..." and gave him nothing.

That's the difference!

Learned so well from George Bush

The word “silently” is instructive, since it bears on the central liability of the Bush presidency: a horrid inability to communicate. This was so bad that there effectively was no bully pulpit under this president. That failure is not just Bush’s but his entire staff. They allowed the opposition to define the debate and public perception, particularly on Iraq and the Middle East.

You may have heard my opponent calling me old, befuddled, or "George Bush's third term". My friends, my worthy opponent is in political diapers. He makes more mistakes when he goes off-script than a cheap dry cleaner. He can say less with more words than anyone I have ever heard, and I have been in the US Senate. For four years after the invasion, Basra was under the control of British forces, but they were unable to contain the violence and withdrew in September last year.

I was under the impression that pressure to turn over provinces to Iraqis was why they pulled out of the city proper and turned security over to the expatriot Iranians in Basra. In keeping with this thread... the Communist News Network strikes again.

From wikipedia's entry on the Decembrist Revolt

To some extent, the Decembrists were in the tradition of a long line of palace revolutionaries who wanted to place their candidate on the throne, but because the Decembrists also wanted to implement a liberal political program, their revolt has been considered the beginning of a revolutionary movement. The uprising was the first open breach between the government and liberal elements, and it would subsequently widen.

The last part says it all

They should be running a commercial. Video of the group's most repulsive aspects, parse the rally crowd thereafter, Obama lifting Reagan from a previous speech, and the audio of Reagan stating "tear down this wall".

problem #1 - todays Rebuplican party has many things - balls ain't one of them

problem #2 - it would take approx 38 seconds after the first ad ran until the media pointed their collective finger and yelled "racist!"

The Nuclear Baby is real, folks. Didn't you read the article?

The chapter title sounds like something from the
darkest minds of Hollywood, but this is far from
fiction, it’s 100% true.
This nuclear baby was conceived September 12,
2006 and just as with a woman with child, nine
months later the delivery is due, which will bring
us to June 12, 2007. This nuclear baby will actually
kill one-third of man over a fourth part of the earth
in and around the great River Euphrates. This
Prophecy was written over 2,000 years ago, just after
the One called the Savior was killed in Yerusalem
on a stake, which was first prophesied almost 4,000
years before it occurred.
Both Yerusalem and the Temple were destroyed
after the sacrifice of the Savior. Mount Zion was
plowed like a field. There was not left one stone
upon another for anyone to see thereafter that a
city ever stood in that place.
All of these events are in the pages of history for
anyone to verify, proving the truthfulness of the
Inspired Prophecies in The Book of Yahweh.
The nuclear baby is a part of another Prophecy
showing the actual end of man’s governments of
and by the people. That Prophecy shows us the last
seven years, starting with the confirmation of the
seven-year peace plan. In this Prophecy we are given
the actual name of the Prime Minister of Israel
(Rabin), who, Prophecy shows, would be the one
with whom the seven-year plan was confirmed.

Did you click on the nuclear baby newsletter? It's on the left hand side. I downloaded it in PDF form - it's 28 pages of scripture that is so twisted out of context it ought to be yelping.

Not that I know any, but would any American Idols singing help or hurt McCain? Isn't that program on Fox?

Terry McCauliffe & Lanny Davis the Clinton's loyal spokesmen said Fox News was fairest of them all, and that Hillary's followers were watching Fox News.

My dream is leftists wake up and see there's life beyond MSNBC, CNN, etc., and that we can be civil and polite while competing.

Heh:

The fascinating Prophecies concerning the nuclear baby involve a number of Prophecies in the Inspired Holy Scriptures, that when correctly combined, show events leading up to June 12, 2007. These Prophecies cover events that started September 12, 2006 and will end nine months from that date with nuclear war, which will leave a third part of man killed over a fourth part of the earth in and around the great River Euphrates. This is a fascinating Prophecy made up of many Prophecies from several different Prophets whose writings were inspired and placed in the Holy Scriptures

When do we get to the part where he redoes his calculations to show that nuclear war is just around the corner? Say in another 9 months?

That is a vaccine - given to college age students going off to live in the dorm, military, etc. No point in giving a vaccine after the disease has already been acquired.

There are drugs to treat it and kids are pretty resilient.

"Change" vs. Multiculturalism, Part MMMCCLXXIV:

Emma, aged 42, has a birth certificate and a "gender recognition certificate" to prove her legal status as a woman although she is still waiting for final surgery to make her transition from male to female physically complete.

She says she has never had a problem with any of her other pupils and says the complaints made by the man from the Meadowhall area of Sheffield, were: "hurtful, offensive and deeply upsetting".

She is being backed by her boss, Laugh n Pass owner Joanne Dixon, who says the man had called her to accuse the firm of sending a man disguised as a woman because he was a Muslim.

...

"That man accused us of being racist, yet his attitude towards Emma showed prejudice of the very worst kind."

...

Joanne said: "Then the husband rang me and said he was going to sue us.

...

"His attitude and his behaviour was outrageous and has upset me and Emma and everyone else who works here. We are not racist, we are not sexist - if anyone was being so it was that man."

A few light-hearted giggles always brighten the day.

What was that all about?

But then the crowd broke into singing " Barack Obama Superstar". Hillary of course cast as Pontius Pilate. While Obama may very well lose the election I predict his campaign soundtrack will be a hit. Songs like "Barry Akbar !" set to a Middle Eastern tune, and "Typical White Grandmother" with an ironic indie edge will shoot up the charts.

And don't worry about Hillary if she loses. I see her winning a Tony playing Evita Peron in a re-make of "Evita". Art in this case, imitates life.

The British Telegraph has all but buried McCain.

They cite their internet fund raising operation, the grassroots organizing network that secured victory over Mrs Clinton by winning a series of caucus states and hundreds of thousands of idealistic young volunteers as crucial advantages over Mr McCain.
Democrats have attracted colossal numbers of new voters - in just seven primary states in March and April, some one million new party members were registered.
At Mr Obama’s campaign headquarters in Chicago, the focus is firmly on the general election. Even on primary day on Tuesday with contests against Mrs Clinton in Kentucky and Oregon a large sign in the open plan office announced: “Countdown to Nov 4th -167 days”.
Joe Trippi, a Democratic consultant who pioneered some of the successful grassroots and internet techniques when he ran Howard Dean’s campaign in 2004, said that John McCain is already in “deep, deep trouble” because of a poor organization and an anemic fund raising total of about a fifth of the $500 million raised by Mr Obama and Mrs Clinton.
“Obama’s got the strongest organization in history because of what he’s done with the internet and plugging volunteers into the paid organizers operation. McCain’s team is in a shambles. He has no organization and no grassroots fund raising operation.”

Bush won 2004 and the Democrat party was solid behind Kerry,
if just one eighth of Hillary's supporters turn on Obama,
McCain will win.
Money or no money.

The Return of FATSO!

Yes folks, it time for my favourite msm meme...

the Feared Annual Taliban Spring Offensive

You know, the one the media warns us is coming every year, but which never really shows up, only to be replaced with the "Eerie Silence of an Afghan Summer" ...

...never mind the number of Taliban attacks are down this year, the latest cliche infested "report" warns us " Taliban gearing up for spring offensive"

If by "gearing up", they mean the Taliban is getting cut to shit by Canadian troops and US Marines, then yes, the Taliban is "gearing up".

Campaign cash just turns into more TV commercials and radio spots. And very few voters make up their mind based on TV commercials. I think its an overrated metric. It matters more in the primaries where you have many candidates fighting over the same voters, but in the General, not so much. Thats my $0.02 anyway.

It is such a cruel joke that is being played on the Obamanation by the Almighty. Imagine the horrifying coincidences to find your father was a communist, and then the people you know and trust, your best first mentor was a Communist, your best teachers in college, were communists, then you graduate and you find a nice respectful church to marry and raise kids, and the leader is a reformed NOI preacher, whom you hardly understand, and due to your hearing problem you never really hear him correctly until you run for the Presidency, and then tapes of him surface showing that he's really disrespectful to you and calls you an ordinary pandering politician? The nerve. Oh, and he says some mean and bizarre things about the US and whitey, but it's the pandering politician that is over the line. Then the wife goes and says she's never been proud of her country in her adult lifetime, well I mean, thats from the 80s to now, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, is that so far wrong? And I mean Ayres and his wife, well they never blew up me or my family, so, people are just overreacting and distracting. Isn't that just the way the wind blows?

How come I the Obamessiah get blasted for five to ten years with hanging around with domestic terrorists and/or commies, when McCain hung around with alot of Commies just out of Military School, in some place called Hanoi? And he even got to stay out of the war in a Hotel!
Life isn't fair.

Ancient--which is to say, multi-hundred-years-old--Chinese architecture had column capitals that were made of many interlocking wooden pieces, which had the effect of dissipating earthquake shocks as they traveled up the columns, thus enabling the buildings to withstand tremors. OT:

James Taranto, writing about Ted Kennedy in today's Best of The Web Today:

Kennedy was elected to his eighth full term in 2006; his term does not end until 2013. If he resigned or died "a special election to choose a successor would be held between 145 and 160 days" later, the Globe reports. Massachusetts is one of the few states in which the governor lacks the authority to fill a Senate vacancy.

It was not always so. When John F. Kennedy left the Senate after being elected president in 1960, Gov. Foster Furcolo appointed a college roommate of JFK's, Ben Smith, as a "seat warmer" for Teddy, who was born on the 200th anniversary of George Washington's birth and would not be old enough to serve in the Senate until 1962. That year Ted Kennedy ran in a special election for the final two years of his elder brother's term.

When I posted Smith's name yesterday, I didn't realize he was JFK's college roommate, and a "seat warmer" for Ted. Hmmmm...

Has this become the penis thread?

Kasparov silenced by unidentified flying penis

Over the years, chess champ turned politico Gary Kasparov has suffered all kinds of indignity: famously undone at his own game by IBM's Deep Blue more than a decade ago, notoriously arrested and jailed by Russian police for his activism last year. Yesterday, however, he faced his most surreal attack yet.

While making a public plea for unity against nemesis Vladimir Putin, a mysterious dangling object from the ceiling distracted the room, invaded by an airborne penis with a helicopter attached to its testicles [video via sharenator]. Undaunted, a bodyguard advanced on the unwelcome member with a stick, neutering it with vicious abandon.

"I think we have to be thankful for the opposition's demonstration of the level of discourse we need to anticipate," said Mr. Kasparov after the attack. "Also, apparently most of their arguments are located beneath the belt." Someone in the audience shouts, "Finally the political power shows its face!" to which he replied, "Well, if that's its face..."

The iconography - pictures of Obama at a church pulpit in front of a cross used in his ads in Kentucky, the posters of him gazing into heaven with light annointing his forhead, etc.

The language - "healing" "a more perfect union" (many more key words & phrases that come up regularly), rewriting/plagiarism of famous/familiar speeches and writings from the American past. (That was particularly apparent in his first speech on race.)

The fainting women at every event

At least one story (serious story) about "faith healing" that happens at his appearances with the "we keep this very quiet" line

The annointing - literally - by Ted Kennedy. "Passing the mantle" of JFK.

Agenda? I don't know - but I do think the religious connection is deliberate. Opium of the people sort of thing.

The older you get, the more you see things that don't work and the more likely you are to flip to the conservative side.

Young liberals are to be forgiven their folly. That's simple ignorance, and is correctible over time. The older a liberal is, the more likely they are to be dumber than a bag of styrofoam peanuts.

re: #467 akarra

Is there any reason why the youth vote and youth culture is as liberal as it is?

Besides other reasons, frankly, because they are youth.

The young lack experience, by definition. They think that their parents' generation messed things up, and that they can fix it, not knowing that the world is broken because human nature is broken.

There is greed, selfishness, jealousy, and every other vice one can imagine. And no one can change that; one can only deal with it.

For example, yes, it would be better to build more schools instead of more jails, but that presumes that lack of education/money/opportunity alone is responsible for all crime. And that presumption is wrong.

Another example is wanting to take from those that have "too much" and give to those in need. The answer seems so simple to them. Perhaps because they are children to whom things are just given, they just don't think that some things are earned. They also don't think enough to realize that plan punishes success and rewards failure, and moreover has resulted in death, poverty, and misery whenever it is tried. 100-200 million or so last century, but who's counting.

Sixteen military wives
Thirty-two softly focused brightly colored eyes
Staring at the natural tan
Of thirty-two gently clenching wrinkled little hands
Seventeen company men
Out of which only twelve will make it back again
Seargeant sent a letter to five
Military wives, his tears drip down to ten little eye

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da

Fifteen celebrity mimes
Leaving their fifteen sorted wretched checkered lives
Will they find the solution in time
Using their fifteen pristine moderate liberal minds?

Eighteen academy chairs
Out of which only seven really even care
Doling out a garment to five
Celebrity mimes, they're humbly taken by surprise

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-da
La de da de da de-dadedade-da

Fourteen cannibal kings
Wondering blindly what the dinner bell will bring
Fifteen celebrity mimes
Served on a leafy bed th sixteen military wives

Cheer them on to their rivals
Cause America can, and America can't say no
And America does, if America says it's so
It's so

And the anchorperson on TV goes...
La de da de da de-dadedade-da

It is disturbing to me, that in 2008, in the USA, there are apparently entire cities and states that are completely outside "mainstream" American thought.

"Mainstream" being defined as, 1) Loving your country, 2) Respecting your countries military, 3) believing that equality of opportunity exists, 4) tolerance of opposing points of view, 5) tolerance of other religions, 6) respect for your forefathers, 7) private property rights.

It appears to me that these cities and states are subverted from within by university and college personnel (students and academics), that keep extending their sphere of influence until the entire city, and in some cases, states are taken over.

16, 32, 32, 17, 12, 5, 10, 15, 15, 15, 18, 7, 5, 14, 15, 16

The three 15s in the middle all refer to "celebrity mimes" as does the following 5 - those who will get surprise garments from academic chairs.

Note also that the sequence begins and ends with 16 and has 16 numbers in the sequence.

Thought there was something fundamentally odd about that picture of the crowd - it does indeed look like a concert crowd, not a political crowd.

If one had to pick the closest media manipulation in use today to what the Obamanistas are doing, one would have to soberly consider that the totalitarian propagandists are the most similar.

A large percentage of the homeless here have been quoted as saying they like it outside and want to be left alone. Many would rather be in a real home, but through lack of skills, substance abuse, or other bad decisions either haven't got anything to buy shelter with or nobody will take a chance on losing their rental property if the government finds out there is crime there later and decides to seize it.
I see a lot of cries for help, but for the most part, if you are responsible, employable, and just need a leg up there are many programs to help. Many of the chronics have simply squandered the chances they were given.

Usual allowances for exceptions, of course.

I notice this band is from Portland. Which would of course explain the big local turnout for a free concert.

530 JustMyView  Wed, May 21, 2008 3:14:32pm

I don't much about this band, but, on other blogs, I've read that they'd be happy to attract an audience of a few hundred on a good night. They were, apparently, in Washington, DC recently, and they played two consecutive nights in a small club favored by the Bush twins back when they partied locally--not at the Verizon Center, which is where Springsteen played when he was last in town.

Here's a comment from someone who was at the Portland event:

I know this is all in good cheeky fun- but I was at the rally and own a lot of Decembrists records and can positively attest that no one knew the Decembrists were playing. We walked during 16 Military Wives (so yes they did play it Mr Geraghty)and thought it was just canned background music. An entire song passed before we realized that it was the actual band on stage. In fact, never once in the 2 1/2 hours I stood in line was the word "Decembrist" even mentioned and it was nowhere to be found on any of the invitations that brought me there in the first place.

To sum up: I know the Decembrists, I like the Decembrists, but I sure as hell am not standing in a 25 block long line for close to three hours just to see them play at Waterfront Park for free (especially when I don't even know it's an option). Now to hear a 45 minute long stump speech by some politician...

Here's another comment from somebody who knows the band:

I saw the Decemberists' first public performance of the Crane Wife songs at tiny Acme here in Portland. They were billed as the December Brides, but leaked the show through their myspace page, etc. About 50 people hung around outside the club after it reached its capacity of roughly 200--Colin Meloy eventually egged the staff to let the diehards in, after cadging rounds of drinks for the band (and anyone near enough the bandstand) out of each of the local media present.

I'm mainly just bragging about having been at that show. But the Republican media is seriously off its nut here. Most of Portland was at the coast on Sunday, nobody was promoting the rally as a free concert, and the Decemberists would draw about the same for an outdoor concert on a sunny day as Captain Bogg & Salty.

But, hey, why bother with research when outrage is so much more fun than facts?

As a general rule, I don't think it's a great idea to draw huge political points from popular music. As I understand it, the band has had a modest degree of success nationally and is popular locally. Nothing I read suggests that it would have drawn a crowd of 75,000 or even 7,500 on its own. That's the point I wanted to make.

re: #491 galloping granny

Some religion with extra magic thrown in.

But look at the first sentence of that article:

Indie rock titans the Decemberists are gearing up for a spring trek that will hit 1,500- to 3,000-capacity venues across the United States.

So, OK, more than a few hundred, but nowhere near 75,000. A few paragraphs into the article you cite, the writer indicates that, during a two-month period, they played 18 dates and attracted a total of 32,000, about 1800 per concert.

re: #530 JustMyView

I don't much about this band, but, on other blogs, I've read that they'd be happy to attract an audience of a few hundred on a good night. They were, apparently, in Washington, DC recently, and they played two consecutive nights in a small club favored by the Bush twins back when they partied locally--not at the Verizon Center, which is where Springsteen played when he was last in town.

But, hey, why bother with research when outrage is so much more fun than facts?

Hey! You're always ready to settle your debate on just "I don't know much about this..." and "apparently" and "I've read," fortified with more "apparentlys." My favorite club rock band is a group called Electric Six and while they have a lot of critical acclaim and tour around the world, the best crowd they could hope for is a packed house of a maybe a thousand people at St. Andrews Hall in Detroit. Seen them there a couple times this year.

And yeah yeah, the singer always gets around to a political rant/comedy routine (last year he pretended to be a huge Bush supporter and tried to get the crowd chanting Bush! but most the people just laughed ..) and this year he was endorsing Obama because both McCain and Clinton are "crypt-keepers".

I like the band for their music, not the politics. Heck, when we went to see them at the Blind Pig in Ann Arbor last year I proudly wore my LGF T-shirt. Anyways, bands like that don't attract the masses even if their following is very loyal. 60K? No way.

A national tour doing 1500 to 3000 seat halls is a hell of a long way from being a "modest success." And this was more than a year ago.

This band also has 15 recordings listed at iTunes, and is pretty heavily promoted by them and by Amazon.com. Their latest record is listed at #500 in Amazon sales rank.

Well with some radio promotion for the free concert /event along with an appearance by The Obamessiah, its not out of the question. I'm sure he's a bigger draw than the band was especially in a moonbat infested place like that. The dems used the free concert / political speech in the last election cycle and I look for them to do that heavy this time. I'm guessing there are lots of lefty bands who will line up to play for free at events he is appearing at. Its a win-win for the band and Obama.

re: #553 Charles

No, it doesn't.

Since you're a musician, I'll let you characterize what level of success this band is enjoying (i.e., whether it's more than "modest"), but it's inarguable that they are not playing stadium-size concerts on their own. They're just not.

The question, I thought, was whether people came to see them or to see Obama, and the implication was that the media had been dishonest because they did not report that this band had played first. But there is no evidence that this band has ever played for an audience anywhere near this size, whereas Obama has attracted very large audiences on a number of occasions.

Also, here's another quote from the other blog indicating that at least one media outlet did report that the Decemberists played at this event.

I know this isn't a terribly important point, but it's worth pointing out that the original premise -- that the national media didn't report that the Decemberists performed at the Oregon rally -- is untrue.

I was watching "Ballot Bowl" on CNN (ie - the national media) which will often cut to live portions of candidate's speeches. They had a correspondent on site who reported that Obama's speech would begin after local rock band, the Decemberists, were finished playing.

So the national media did in fact report that the Decemberists performed at the rally. The entire premise for this ridiculous series of posts is flawed.

Even so, Charles, that is still less than a third of Sunday's crowd, and certainly part of the draw for the Hollywood Bowl performance must have been the LA Philharmonic. How many sold out performances do they have when Decemberist isn't playing?

"The link Charles provided makes my main point: This is not a band that attracts concert-goers by the tens of thousands."

Back in college in the late 80s, I was friends with a band called "Mata Hari" (I've heard a couple of the members still do gigs under that name sometimes). They were based in Fargo Freaking North Dakota. I attended one gig where they played to 20 people max.

Of course, that was a weeknight in the middle of the winter. In Fargo.

I also attended a gig they had opening in Fargo for a huge national group (part of my memory is telling me it was Slaughter and another part is telling me it was Ratt, but I really don't remember). They played to about 30,000 that night, and the crowd actually SHRUNK after the opening act. And it definitely was NOT free.

Anyway, the point is, they PWNED their hometown, though they also had down nights and I'm guessing when they were touring they didn't draw more than a few hundred most nights. But the stars aligned for them a few times (even without The Messiah speaking afterward) and they got a taste of what it would be like to REALLY make it. They never did, though...more's the pity. Anybody who liked hair bands would have loved these guys.

Take one locally popular band, hire them to do a free gig, order up a sunny 80-degree day in an area where rain/fog is the norm--oh, yeah, and bring in one bloviating politician--and kazing. 75 grand.

Charles, I don't suppose you could stop defending yourself about crowd sizes and other things to actually *listen* to one of their songs for a bit?

The reason I'm asking you to do so is that, once you do, it will become immediately apparent why the Decemberists would use the USSR anthem for an opening piece of music. And it's got very little to do with their politics.

They aren't a 60's hippie band. Not unless you're talking 1860. They use some very, very retro musical arrangements and sensibilities. More often than not, they perform in Civil War era costuming, and the music reflects that time period. A piece of big, operatic music - like the Russians are so famous for - is right up their musical alley.

Here's a promo shot of them in all their "Communist" glory:

[Link: www.aversion.com...]

It should be immediately obvious why they're using the USSR anthem. Note the lack of actual USSR symbols (the hammer and sickle) in the picture, though. This is hardly the focus of their albums - they're just as likely to show up in bowler hats and corsets. The name of the band references musicians who were instrumental agitators in the 1917 Russian Revolution. 1917. Stalinists they ain't.

And here's a quote form the lyrics of "Yankee Bayonet", a song of their latest album:

When I was a girl how the hills of Oconee
Made a seam to hem me in
There at the fair when our eyes caught, careless
Got my heart right pierced by a pin

But oh, did you see all the dead of Manassas
All the bellies and the bones and the bile
Though I lingered here with the blankets barren
And my own belly big with child

Um, I don't think this is an Iraq war protest song.

Hyperventilate if you want about this one, but it seems to me that they're much more interest in the style and look of Lenin/early Soviet costuming and imagery than actual communism. And the early Soviets did have a clear, coherent style that was kinda cool. (It was meant to be. Propaganda's not useful if it's unappealing.)

In other words... you don't need to read so much into this. Really. The USSR anthem has little, if nothing, to do with their politics. It has everything to do with their music.

This part of my post:

Of course, truth in advertising: I like the band. I listened to one of their CDs incessantly while my wife was in the hospital with a preemie. I feel the urge to defend them, for reasons no more rational than that. Go figure.
