Gadget Watch: IPhone 3G on the Way

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 2:22:28 pm PDT

Looks like the long-awaited iPhone 3G is coming early next month: iPhone 2.0 Worldwide Launch on June 9th. When I say “long-awaited,” I’m speaking about myself. The only reason I haven’t already acquired one of these tin cans is because the current version doesn’t support the faster 3G network.

A June 9 launch date for the iPhone 2? No surprises there, and now it looks like inside sources are confirming the June 9 date, which is also when Steve Jobs’ keynote at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference is scheduled.

But Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz has got wind of the details of the launch, and his source tells him that the Second Coming will be a worldwide event — not just in the United States. He also claims that his snitch, “someone very, very close to the 3-G iPhone launch”, says that the current fixed pricing model will be discontinued in favor of a more Euro-friendly flexible price point, one that can shift subject to the markets and the whims of the telcos.

The last point concerns Spain. As we reported this morning, Telefonica will indeed carry the iPhone, and will be launching it along with its brand new Madrid megastore on June 18.

This seems plausible enough. Despite the odd delay, all of Apple’s hardware ships worldwide immediately upon launch. And the evidence coming in from around the world corroborates Jesus’ story: The million and one one-line press releases from cellphone carriers announcing deals with Apple, for one, and the iPhone drought in the UK, Germany and even the online Apple store, for another. What is amazing is that Apple kept things quiet for so long, considering the amount of people involved.

So far, we count over 40 countries with iPhone deals, and in some of these there will be multiple carriers offering the iPhone.

same here - passed on the original because

a. never buy anything first generation (remember usb 1!)

b. not 3g compatible

I can't wait to grab one of these babies! My cell phone is 6 years old, has a screen the size of a matchbook and has developed an odd habit of shutting itself off - adn random times for no apparent reason. AND the battery on my 2nd generation ipod is at the point where I'm lucky if it lasts 3 hours!

Seriously - the line for ipod v2 forms behind me!

Senator Hagel heartily endorsed McCain's 2000 campaign, had a Presidential Announcement party at his fancy McLean Virginia house in Sept. 1999, celebrated the McCain New Hampshire victory in New Hampshire in early 2000.

When good people go bad, it's so sad. BDS seems terminal.

Ask at the hotel desk.

They find so many chargers, that when Mr. Silhouette would accidently leave his at home, he would often ask at the desk and get one for free. He traveled a lot and ended up with a half dozen.

On average, a pair of sunglasses lasts me between 4 or 5 years, and I usually retire them in unbroken condition. I wear them everyday of the year, the secret is to either leave them on, or place them in a safe place,
the same place that they survived the last time you left them there and
as much as possible, always put them in the same place.

I never lost a cell phone, not even for 2 minutes.

Socks on the other hand..... thousands.

My grandmother had a black iron rotary phone sitting on a table in the hallway. It was wired straight in to the wall. That phone never had a problem. I wish today's phones were built like that. When my mom changed the telephone account after grandma died, the phone company took the phone back.

-Cannot take video. Its frustrating to see someone with an $75 phone take video's while you stand there wondering why I spent so much money.

Charles, a cellphone is cheap insurance/protection. The ability to "reach out and call someone" from just about anywhere is a potential life saver.

And with the proliferation of techno-geeks surfing from their cell phones, you might want to have access to one - for just a while - to check page construction...

My mother still has a rotary phone in the basement that has the dial mounted atop the box with the phone workings. It was on its way out back in 1954 when it was installed, but it fit nicely in the designated place.

That thing is built like a tank, and has never given any trouble.

Amazing isn't it? It was the only phone in the house. Back then that's how they did it. It was heavy...the receiver clunked loud when you put it back on the cradle. Who knew one day we would be able to watch movies on out phones one day?

You could really slam the phone down with those. It's not the same with cell phones by pushing a button.

When you say 'dick around' you mean metaphorically, right?

re: #45 Charles

I often astound people by telling them I have never owned a cell phone. Yet, it is true.

NOW you are my hero.

OT
It's just a gut feeling, probably irrational on my part, but I sort of have the feeling that Ann Coulter may not like Barack [Hussein] Obama:

But in reality, when talking to a lunatic without having first bombed him into submission, the only possible result is appeasement. Any talk with Hitler, or a McHitler like Ahmadinejad, that does not include handing over Czechoslovakia or Israel, like a game show parting gift, is going to be a relatively brief chat. Well since I believe the case involves an Air Force Colonel and HER girlfriend perhaps it was the wrong word to use?

I've never had one either. I think I've only used a cell phone two or three times.

You'd think that the next generation of "I" phone would be called the "J" phone?

They could keep evolving until they got to the "X" phone.

A vegetarian and a non cell phone user. Have you ever lived in Los Trancos Woods above Portola Valley? Or perhaps La Honda above Woodside? You might fit in there very well. (Both beautiful places).

With all the cell phones sitting around my house, there are never any "old maids" when we microwave popcorn. Or incessant junk messages to delete every day.

That's pretty hard to believe now... are you sure?

haha, seriously! Who hasn't used a cell phone ever?

I could have proudly sworn that I never owned one (using one is a different story) until last week. Got a pay-as-you-go little thingie, but haven't used it yet. It's for emergencies, like if I get lost in New York or something (I have a negative spatial IQ).

By the way I responded to you in the thread below.

Shoot! This would make a fantastic birthday gift to myself (it's the day before on the 8th) especially since the iTunes App Store should open the next day as well.

Congratulations, Apple, your media/internet heavy phone finally got a broadband connection.

So will it be 3.5g, or just 3?

121 CptNerd  Wed, May 21, 2008 5:59:15pm

Color me impressed when they make one that works with 3G service in Japan as well as the rest of the world. Of course with Jobs' Reality Distortion Field, even he might persuade the Japanese telcos to make an exception to "The Japanese Exception".

I picked up one of the AT&T refurbs at the end of last week. I have to say that I wish I had bought one months ago. It is the coolest tech item I've ever had or seen in regards to how useful it is and just how frakkin cool it is. The edge network isn't the fastest in the world but it is fast enough for every day stuff and it is a lot easier on the battery than the Wifi or 3g will be on the new iPhone.

I have an iPhone, and will get the 3G. My lucky daughter will get my used one. It's so addicting. I use it on the bus while I improve my global footprint.

By the way, I wear my McCain button everywhere now in Chicago. No one sits next to me, bums don't ask me for money. Sales people are a little nicer to me.

Vote McCain, you'll always have a seat on the bus!

Speaking of phones, if you want to use an old-style Bluetooth handset like the old Western Electric phones, ThinkGeek has them for 30 bucks...

if you want to play flash videos on iPhone get VHamster. Its a bookmarklet. You put it on your safari tool bar and select the video and then vhamster makes it into an iPhone watchable video. Only problem is it takes 10-15 min to work.

128 Carolina Girl  Thu, May 22, 2008 8:04:56am

I received an iPhone as a Xmas present (nice boss I got!) and I have to say, Charles, if v2 is as good as v1 insofar as user-friendly, and as computer savvy as you are (me - I'm the world's great DOS dummy which is why I'm switching to an iMac come Xmas), you'll get more out of yours than I ever did.

Does anyone know if AT&T plans to change their rate plan for the iPhone when it becomes 3G compatible? Currently, unlimited internet browsing, etc. is $20.00 per month for the iPhone, but you can only connect with WiFi; for current AT&T 3G phones (Tilt, Blackjack, etc.) it's $40.00 per month.

re: #123 ploome hineni

Ploome - no, you can't insure the iPhone. AT&T also doesn't offer insurance on a lot of its PDA/pocket PC phones.

130 Ward Cleaver  Thu, May 22, 2008 8:47:39am

They're going to have to improve security on the devices if they expect to see any widespread adoption by enterprise users.
