Global Terrorism in Sharp Decline

Wed, May 21, 2008 at 8:59:17 pm PDT

As the Democratic Party continues to hammer away at their message and insist that the Bush administration’s policies “have not made us safer,” here’s news that directly contradicts their defeatism: Iraq figures distort terrorism statistics: study.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A study released on Wednesday reports a decline in fatal attacks of terrorism worldwide and says U.S. think-tank data showing sharp increases were distorted due to the inclusion of killings in Iraq.

“Even if the Iraq ‘terrorism’ data are included, there has still been a substantial decline in the global terrorism toll,” said the 2007 Human Security Brief, an annual report funded by the governments of Canada, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and Britain.

For example, global terrorism fatalities declined by 40 percent between July and September 2007, driven by a 55 percent decline in the “terrorism” death toll in Iraq after the so-called surge of new U.S. troops and a cease-fire by the Shi’ite militant Mehdi Army, the brief said.

“We have concluded that the expert consensus (on terrorism) is probably misleading,” Andrew Mack, director of the Human Security Report Project, told a news conference.

What .. shock .. horror ?

Dont say it ..

Maybe we are actually ... winning?

2 yesandno  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:02:26pm

However, eco-terrorism is on the rise...particularly as it affects public policies.

3 Kosh's Shadow  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:02:49pm

Don't forget the wall between the paliterrorists and the Israelis. That cut down the number of terrorist attacks as well.
Oh, wait. The UN doesn't consider that terrorism; it is the wall (fence, actually) and checkpoints that are the terrorism.

The only terrorists to the UN and Democrats are "white" Americans and those that think like them. It is understood that capitalism, Democracy, the Middle Class, and pesky US Constitution are the font of all the world's problems.

Dang, two new threads at once! What to choose, what to choose?!

9 Globular Cluster  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:05:10pm

The Leftists will spin the results no matter what. If there is an increase in terrorism, it "proves" that Bush's policies have been innefective and need to change. If terrorism has decreased, it "proves" that we no longer need to spend as much money on counter-terrorism and that we should withdraw from Iraq.

If only they wordprocessed in Helvetia and Comic Sans .. the world would be a safer place.

I think the problems started when typewriters went from Pica to Elite.

It's also a U.N. study, consider whose side they're on.

This is exactly what is to be expected, when we kill them.

17 LEGION  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:22:04pm

Yep, and you won't hear it from the MSM. They are worse than Pravda was during the height of the Cold War in Russia. Phtttt.

18 laxmatt1984  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:29:40pm

Well, at least until the Obama Presidency.

But whatever, the Sears Tower is an eyesore anyway.

19 Ojoe  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:30:28pm

Well. Perhaps we have learned the lessons of the 1930s.

Let us not stumble now by electing Obama.

(Oh, and eat all you want)

Goodnight all.

20 Yankee Division Son  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:32:30pm

Bush's fault.

21 Irene NYC  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:33:59pm

Why are all these supposed "experts" so stupid? Global terrorism declined? Well, that might partly be due to the fact that the terrorists have now morphed into government officials, e.g., Gaza and Lebanon. The "terrorists" have also figured out that they can achieve their ends a little less violently through our legal systems or just by threatening violence. Or, they may be concentrating their efforts on one huge operation, like Iran hoping to nuke Israel.

They still have the same goal, however. Their means just adapted to changing conditions on the ground. But it's still jihad and they're still terrorists.

22 swamprat  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:38:29pm

"so called surge"......Whenever this phase is used, I never understand what is being implied. .....Not a real surge? A neo-surge? Surge-lite? Maybe;... I-don't-like-it-but-I-can't-think-of-a-valid-way-t o-denigrate-it-surge? Anybody get this?

26 realwest  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:53:15pm

re: #8 Intrepid Hey Intrepid, as great as this thread is, the next one over is really GREAT! BUT you truly have to read the article by Mr. Cooper (in Charles' link) to really appreciate it all and, for me at least, that took some time.
But it was time well spent!

27 29Victor  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:54:38pm

Hmmmmm. Government agencies whose funding and authority rely on the threat of terrorist attacks say that terrorism is increasing despite evidence to the contrary.

I say again, hmmmmmm.

28 A Kiwi Infidel  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:54:53pm

Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Or, as terrorism and that "j" word have fallen into the basket marked "do not use under any circumstance", of course it has dropped, but that ties in with point 1

Or, its the calm before the storm.

29 realwest  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:55:23pm

re: #21 Irene NYC Hey hi there Irene! You left out one point in why global terrorism MAY have declined: we have been killing terrorists/jihadists by the truckloads over in Iraq and Afghanistan and the worst news an Al-Q officer can hear these days is "You've been promoted to number three in Iraq!". LOL!

32 realwest  Wed, May 21, 2008 9:59:56pm

re: #30 A Kiwi Infidel I'm sure he simply forgot the sarc tag, but having watched, in person, the second World Trade Center tower to fall, I just kinda wanted to remind him, ya know?

33 least  Wed, May 21, 2008 10:23:08pm

Never. Never. EVER forget the left's capacity for self-delusion.
They will see what they want and will hear what they want.
If it conflicts with their world-view -- it don't exist.

To the left, the only terrorist is US/BushCo.
And US/BushCo is a wholly owned subsidiary of Cheney/Haliburton.
And Cheney/Haliburton owns a whole bunch of Caterpillar products, so they're obviously Zionist tools.
And you know how much control they have in the mass media, so that's obviously why Chris Matthews has become such a Reich-winger and aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!
It's way too easy to write like them.
*spit*
*cleansing breath*

34 profitsbeard  Wed, May 21, 2008 10:40:11pm

I blame Bush for all of the terrorist attacks on the U.S. since 9/11!

Right, Barry? Right, Michelle?

35 markie  Wed, May 21, 2008 10:44:28pm

Goebbels' Big Lie.

36 docremulac  Wed, May 21, 2008 10:54:08pm

Off topic,

In case anybody thinks the cold war is over, might want to check into Pravda online every once in a while. The publication covers topics ranging all the way from America being the most evil place on earth to America being the most evil place in history. And yes, all the articles are about how America sucks.

Here's a fun fact from the country that brought you government created famine and mass starvation.

7 million people starved in America during the great depression.

Ignorance bordering on superstition. No wonder these people have been ruled by tyrants since time immemorial. A brief gasp of freedom after Cold War I, then right back into the clutches of Stalin 2.0, aka: Mr Putin.

Hopeless.

37 astronmr20  Wed, May 21, 2008 11:14:52pm

DEAD TERRORISTS DON'T TERRORIZE.

38 Egfrow  Wed, May 21, 2008 11:30:33pm

The decline in violent terrorism is no longer needed because most western nations have politically capitulated without a struggle.

39 Yehudit  Wed, May 21, 2008 11:52:37pm

1) this contradicts the conventional wisdom that our actions only "create more terrorists" and that's a great talking pt.
2) this will be spun as "we can leave Iraq now" and "rightwing" fearmongering is overstated"

40 philosoteric  Wed, May 21, 2008 11:56:26pm

Note that they credit the ceasefire individually, and do not link it to the fact that American troops forced Mookie's hand on it.

45 Tigger2005  Thu, May 22, 2008 3:46:23am

Unfortunately, a lot of this decline may be due to the fact that terrorism has been so effective, that now merely the threat of terrorism is sufficient to get governments to cave. Not to mention how effective terrorist groups and terror supporting governments have become at media manipulation (not that it takes much effort to manipulate the media if you're a Leftist, an Islamic terrorist, or an anti-American dictatorship or totalitarian government).

Oh, I'm pretty sure it is sarcasm. I've never been to New York, but I'd always heard that the WTC was not well liked by NYers, especially when it was initially being built. Heard that it was a scar on the skyline. Thus, he's backhandedly referring to another "ugly" building that will be a target should the Obama-rama get elected. Besides, I believe that it was in the original plans for 9/11 prior to being scaled back to just four planes. I'm late for work, so can't check.

But I don't doubt for a second that everybody who thought that they were ugly would love to see them standing today.

Well, maybe 'cept some moonbats and twoofers.

49 Ben F  Thu, May 22, 2008 6:49:36am

Of course terror attacks and terror casualties are up in Israel thanks to, among other things, Hamas control of Gaza (stemming from American insistence that Hamas be allowed to participate in the 2006 elections), Israel's abandonment of the Philadelphi Corridor (again under American pressure), America's arming of Fatah (some of whose arsenal fell into the hands of Hamas, and other of whose arms are used to kill Israelis), and reduction of West Bank checkpoints (at the behest of, well, you-know-who).

re: #47 DirtyDog

I'll concede that the Sears Tower isn't a particurlarly attractive building. But the implied reference to 9/11 elicited in me a mental image far uglier. Ask any New Yorker if they think the pile of smouldering rubble at ground zero looked more or less offensive that the twin towers did when they were standing. The idea of another pile of smouldering rubble where the "eyesore" Sears Tower stands is repellant to me and over the top as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure the implied message of the post was something along the line of: If Obama is elected then there might well be another catastrophe like 9/11. This I agree with. But I remember the twin towers, how they looked both before and after 9/11. Invoking the image of a similar fate befalling any building (even an ugly one) is, IMHO in poor taste, even if it supports a position I'm in agreement with.

54 Ward Cleaver  Thu, May 22, 2008 8:55:40am

Suck on that, Barry.

55 n2stox  Thu, May 22, 2008 9:41:13am

Isn't it a bit amazing how killing terrorists really does decrease terrorism?

It probably is a great deterrent when a house in Pakistan blows up from missiles launched from a Predator. (Gadahn + al-Libi)

Bystanders ask "what was that?" Answer: "Oh, that's where some Al Qaeda guys were staying."

56 anotherindyfilmguy  Thu, May 22, 2008 10:27:17am

Of course there will be a surge in terrorism now that Hezballah has taken over Lebanon...

But congress/house doesn't need to worry about that sort of thing when there's oil company executives to pillory... (and it's even funnier, in a sad tragic way, when the oil exec's point out that the dems have blocked everything that would actually lead to lower oil prices-but hey reality is as defined by dems right?)

57 Thanos  Thu, May 22, 2008 10:55:13am

The past two months have been exceptionally low --- I do a morning terror round up and post them in spinoffs almost every day, and reports of terror anywhere are becoming harder to find. Typically you see an uptick in the Spring. While the Tamil Tigers, Naxalists and other groups are risining in numbers of terror attacks, Islamist terror is decreasing. Everywhere but Pakistan and Afghanistan, where it's on a ramp up.

58 littleO  Thu, May 22, 2008 11:59:16am
