Nail Bomb Attack at British Restaurant

Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:28:41 am PDT

Man injured after TWO ‘nail bombs’ are found in busy city centre restaurant.

A city centre was evacuated today after two bombs were found - at least one of which exploded - at a busy lunchtime cafe.

A man, who is believed to have set off the explosive device, was injured and has been taken into custody. At least one of the devices was believed to be a nail bomb.

The Chief Constable of Devon and Cornwall, Stephen Otter, said tonight: “We can now confirm there were two explosive devices found at the scene.” He said they were both in the same area of the Giraffe restaurant at the Princesshay shopping centre, in Exeter, although he would not give exact details of where. He said they had both been made safe. He could not say what kind of devices they were.

The 22-year-old man was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and the area was sealed off by police. Officers said he suffered lacerations to his eye and some facial burning.

They are trying to find out what sort of device caused the explosion and whether there are any others still live.

Forensic experts have been called to the scene and a Royal Navy bomb disposal team from Plymouth are on stand by. At least one device is thought to be a home made nail or letter bomb which may have exploded while being assembled or primed in the toilets of the restaurant.

Eyewitness Peter Lacey, who was in the restaurant with his wife, said: “There were three explosions. ”They sounded more like gunshots than a bomb, like a lightbulb exploding. They came from a locked toilet.“

UPDATE at 5/22/08 12:21:56 pm:

To my great surprise, the perpetrator does not appear to be a Buddhist: Muslim convert held after nail bomb blast in restaurant.

At baggage check in and when you go through the metal detectors they'll sometimes run a piece of cloth over over your luggage or carry on bag. They put the cloth in a little machine to sniff for explosives. I work with solvents and chemicals sometimes and if a have tools in my bag they'll test positive. It's happened to me twice now.

re: #107 Aldamir

I live in the UK and this story has not even featured in the TV news that I just watched (Channel 5). It is hidden on a dark corner of the BBC website. Most people outside Exeter may not even be aware that this has happened. For a significant terrorist incident the reporting is virtually non-existent. Of the few reports that there are only the Daily Telegraph mentions the possible Islamic element.

Well, we had a gangster shooting at a park where the neighborhood kids play and it was sort of hid away too. I heard about it from a teen who was skateboarding in the ditch there when it happened and he ended up hiding under a car. One dead. But lucky for us, even though random people get shot occasionally, the gangsters just shoot their drug deal adversaries, not "civilians". A police friend of mine said the motivation (drug deal gone bad vs. points in heaven for killing) makes all the difference in dealing with them.

143 jjag  Thu, May 22, 2008 1:00:40pm

Anyone else noticing that "terrorists" are getting less and less competent?

They've always had an element of "clumsiness" (if you will) as with the dope who couldn't light his shoe up on the plane, the bombers who lit themselves up after crashing their car into the airport in Scotland, the recent attempt to drive a bomb laden truck into Israel and now this episode.

The trend seems clear; they've never been able to recruit too many bright fellows (like the guy involved in the first WTC attack who went back to the truck rental place for some stupid reason). Now they not only have dopes but don't even seem to be able to get much explosive "bang" going for these increasingly futile, efforts (thankfully).

So if you've started with dopes and have exhausted the supply of "reasonably" intelligent dopes and now are forced to use complete dopes it doesn't seem to bode too well for the future of your organization, does it (happily)?

I mean, what's left? Who wants to be a part of a "revolution" where nothing "big" seems to happen anymore? Who wants to die just to set off a nail bomb? Yes, maybe the odd dope will still go in for this but doesn't it seem clear that the terror "movement" is in big trouble?

If you can't recruit people of even modest intelligence and skill what hope do you have of ever achieving the goal of "terrorizing" anyone again?

Blast suspect was radicalised

Police have named a man arrested in connection with an explosion at an Exeter restaurant as 22-year-old Nicky Reilly from Plymouth.

Deputy Chief Constable Tony Melville from Devon and Cornwall Police said Mr Reilly has "a history of mental illness" was a recent convert to Islam.

He said Reilly suffered serious facial injuries following the explosion.

Anti-terrorist officers and security services have been called in to assist police in their investigation.

The device exploded at 1250GMT on Thursday in the Giraffe restaurant at the Princesshay shopping centre.

Bomb disposal experts attended the scene and made safe two explosive devices.

Mr Melville said: "Our investigation so far indicates Reilly, who had a history of mental illness, had adopted the Islamic faith.

"We believe despite his weak and vulnerable illness he was preyed upon, radicalised and taken advantage of."

After the arrest police officers searched an address in King Street, Plymouth which was linked to Reilly.

They confirmed that he travelled from Plymouth to Exeter by bus and are appealing for anyone who may have seen him over recent weeks to contact them.

Second device

After the device exploded police officers evacuated the city's bus station and extended an exclusion cordon 100 metres around the scene.

Chief Constable Stephen Otter from Devon and Cornwall Police said one device exploded in the restaurant and another was found nearby.

The second device was made safe by a bomb disposal team.

Mr Otter said: "The injured man had one of the explosive devices on him, which partially went off.

"The other, in the vicinity of the restaurant, did not go off."

"The Devon and Cornwall force was working with the Metropolitan Police as we do with any explosion where we cannot understand why it happened. "

well duh!

164 TS  Thu, May 22, 2008 2:24:22pm

The old 'mentally ill' excuse. No shit, you'd have to be mentally ill in some form to convert to Islam.

And true to the religion of peace, he targets a restaurant geared for people to bring their children too.

I hope the bastard got a nail in the eye...talk about sweet justice.

I also hope the police and gov't do their fucking jobs, which is to protect the public, and find out where he was converted (in jail?), who converted him, what mosque he goes to, and what they teach there and prosecute the mosque leadership for incitment to murder and conspiracy to commit murder and whatever the hell else they can charge them with! HATE CRIME? Or is it only a hate crime when the person perpetrating it is a white, non-Muslim male?

Oppressed muslims are merely lashing out against the injustices heaped on them when they attack infidels las the korananimals were ordered to do so by a primitive tribal brigand and pedophile.
Notice how little response there was from the korananimals to Geert Wilders film. The lslamaniacs 100% supported what the mullahs in Fitna were saying and took pride in the news reports Wilders cited regarding the killings of infidels.
The only ones upset by the movie were the cowardly useful idiot Euroweenie pols. Europe is a goner.

Let me ask this question, drawing on your notion, then: if the first years draw on all the reasonably intelligent believers to blow themselves up, and the so-called "leadership" of movements like Hamas and Hezbollah shies away from committing these things themselves or keeps their children out of the line of fire, then isn't the sane long-term strategy to just tighten up your security, throw up a wall, and use "decap"-type strikes, and wait a few years or so for the dummies to show up as your precursor to winning? Maybe this has been Israel's scheme, as they have followed this notion from about 2001 or so. Mentally ill or a devout muslim? What's the difference?

Seems Giraffe is owned by a Jew and his sister is active in the anti jihad.

Purely a coincidence i'm sure

Reports in the UK put his mental age at about 10.

Sounds about right for a follower of Mo

Explosion: Pair Arrested In Plymouth

Armed police have arrested two men outside a cafe in Plymouth, the home town of a man held over an explosion at a restaurant in Exeter.

Eyewitnesses said the arrests took place this afternoon in Old Town Street, in the centre of Plymouth, the home town of bomb suspect Nicky Reilly.

Police said Reilly carried a home-made bomb made with a mixture of chemicals and nails into the Giraffe family restaurant in Exeter on Thursday lunchtime.

He was slightly injured when it exploded but no one else was hurt.

Eyewitnesses said two dark-skinned men were arrested during the operation in Plymouth.

Rebecca Pope, 25, said she was looking out of a window above the Bagatelle Cafe when she heard shouting.

She said armed police pointed weapons at the men, who were sitting at a table outside the cafe with a child in a pushchair. "Everyone was screaming."

She said both of the men were searched and put into paper suits before being placed in unmarked cars.

The pushchair was taken away by a policewoman.

Another eyewitness, Paul Marples, who works in the HSBC bank across the road from the cafe, said he saw around 10 armed officers descend on the cafe.

He said they pointed weapons "point blank" at one of the men sitting outside. He said the first he knew of the incident was when "everyone came rushing into the bank".

I read a bit about this on Thursday -
My first thought: terrorism
My second thought: who would want to blow up Exeter?
Friday - more info in the papers, Daily Mail has a piece on it.

re: #81 karmic_inquisitor

You know, I am trying to learn facts of this incident before calling it an "attack" or a "bombing" or "terrorism".

How do we know that the "nails" in the "nail bomb" aren't finger nail clippings? I will need more facts before deciding whether this is something other than a typical occurrence at a typical London Restaurant.
