The Beam in Howard Kurtz's Eye

Thu, May 22, 2008 at 11:51:39 am PDT

In an article about Ted Kennedy, the Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz suddenly lashes out at Michelle Malkin for comments posted at her blog: Howard Kurtz - A Day of Sadness.

(A digression: Michelle Malkin is among those conservatives asking readers to put aside political differences and pray for Kennedy and his family, and most of her commenters did just that. But there were a few, revoltingly hateful exceptions— posters who were reveling in the news and, in one case, talked of celebrating.)

I’ve pointed this out before, but Howard Kurtz is being stunningly hypocritical when he attacks blogs for these kinds of comments—because the Washington Post’s own comments sections are often just chock full of ugly, hateful posts wishing death on people. And they almost never police them.

Their recent article on Ted Kennedy’s misfortune is a case in point. Right on the first page of comments, without even searching, we find this lovely sentiment, wishing death on the President of the United States:

TomIII wrote:

Actually its less than 364 days. January 20 is about 8 months away.

It would be fitting if an angry mob dragged him out of his crappy Crawford ranch and tore him limb from limb.

I think the guy is really low class, taking a shot at Michelle in the article. Shows to me the left is a bunch of obnoxious thugs that have absolutely no personal standards.

The knucklehead even put it in the first part of the article to make a political statement. What a POS.

Exeter explosion at Giraffe restaurant: man injured is suspected Islamic extremist

A convert to Islam no less:

Police sources told The Daily Telegraph the man is a white male, aged 22, from the South West and is thought to be a convert to Islam.

A team from the Counter-terrorism Command at Scotland Yard was travelling to the scene last night as investigations continued.

Devon and Cornwall chief constable Stephen Otter said that a second device was found near the restaurant but refused to comment on a possible motive.

He said: “There were two devices, one on the café and one nearby. We do not know precisely how bad it could have been if they had gone off but it would have been quite serious.

Muslim convert held after nail bomb blast in restaurant

A Muslim convert was being held tonight after two bombs were found in a family restaurant toilet following an explosion at lunchtime.

Police and bomb disposal teams were called in after a young white man apparently attempted to detonate a nail bomb.

Diners heard three blasts which sounded like gunshots go off in a toilet at the Giraffe cafe in Exeter city centre as they were having lunch today.

Eyewitnesses said officers had to break down the cubicle door because the 22-year-old refused to come out.

When he emerged, wearing jeans and a dark t-shirt, blood was running down his face and all over his clothes.

...There were claims the suspect was a Muslim convert and detectives are now trying to determine whether he has links to Islamic extremism.

The battle against the biased, sometimes bigoted MSM is slowly being won. All of the MSM, particularly print media, are going bankrupt.

Media, particularly news, will become more opinionated and partisan. This means that the right -- as well as the left -- will have the means to discuss issues. To the extent that the left continues to rely on the MSM, their fortunes will decline. The right has never relied on the MSM and has depended on small circ. alternative publications/radio/tv.

Thus, in the media, we're ahead and likely to gain traction on the biased MSM. As long as the MSM tries to hide under the figleaf of "objectivity," they'll fail -- when they finally come out of the closet and admit their liberal slant, the battle will be engaged. From the standpoint of the right, we need more time to get our blogs and other media in fighting shape. We're close now. So lets hope that the media dies a slow, deluded and painful death ... as we rev up our own media.

Obama tried to pull a "I care more about veterans than John McCain" and got this in response:

It is typical, but no less offensive that Senator Obama uses the Senate floor to take cheap shots at an opponent and easy advantage of an issue he has less than zero understanding of. ... Unlike Senator Obama, my admiration, respect and deep gratitude for America's veterans is something more than a convenient campaign pledge. I think I have earned the right to make that claim.

...And I take a backseat to no one in my affection, respect and devotion to veterans. And I will not accept from Senator Obama, who did not feel it was his responsibility to serve our country in uniform, any lectures on my regard for those who did.

Newsbusters

The new album from The Eagles, Long Road Out of Eden, is just one long, sustained attack on the integrity of the United States and is as bad as any loud-mouthed Dixie Chicks diatribe. With songs prosaically about Global Warming and the evil American “empire,” seemingly the only one of the band who just wanted to entertain the fans was Joe Walsh, the others too puffed up with their own sense of superiority to bother. Unfortunately, what we have here just another exclamation from pampered rock stars that they are smarter, more environmentally friendly and more caring than the rest of us... but be sure and buy more albums for gifts folks! This album should have been titled “Long Trip to the Bank” because for much of it the band seems to be on autopilot and too much of it seems like a cynically geared ploy to sell plastic as opposed to a solid attempt to entertain. It seems that they consciously wrote this one to appeal to sectors of the radio market -- the country market, adult contemporary -- so much so that the album lacks freshness. Several of the songs are so obviously written to have a country sound in an effort to get airplay on America’s country stations, for instance, that it’s a bit hard to get past the obvious ploy to enjoy the tunes.

This two disc set starts out with a short, whiney little piece that is a blatant plea to appeal to those worried about global warming. “No More Walks in the Wood,” penned on autopilot by Don Henley, from a poem by John Hollander, it ridiculously whines that his walk in the woods ain’t so cool anymore because “The trees have all been cut down.” Hollander’s poem tried to be clever with a globaloney reference, but it just ended up sounding clumsy. “This is the aftermath,” Henley warbles, “Of afternoons in clover fields, where we once made love... where we made our own weather.” Naturally, we ruined it all, man! It laments that “now they are gone for good” as if we could destroy all the clover fields and trees in the world. This little piece is not very subtle, but it is thankfully a short one at two minutes.

Sometimes, I forget how preachy and boring Frey and Henley can get.

I never forgive people who slander my country! Never!

Gorebul Warming Consensus.

We urge the United States government to reject the global warming agreement that was written in Kyoto, Japan in December, 1997, and any other similar proposals. The proposed limits on greenhouse gases would harm the environment, hinder the advance of science and technology, and damage the health and welfare of mankind.

There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate. Moreover, there is substantial scientific evidence that increases in atmospheric carbon dioxide produce many beneficial effects upon the natural plant and animal environments of the Earth.

This petition has been signed by over 31,000 American scientists.

The MSM and the Dems have decided that Obama is the Messiah and he WILL win if they have anything to say about it. For the first time in a long time there is a large youth segment that has absolutely NO memory at all of the Soviet Union, the Cold War or any of the rest and this group has simultaneously been subjected to very leftist historical and social views since day one. They fall for his mumbo-jumbo hook, line and sinker and simply cannot see the illogic of virtually any of Obama's positions.

Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your brothers, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

HYANNIS PORT -- US Senator Edward M. Kennedy said this afternoon that he probably would not give the commencement speech Sunday at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn.

"I think it's unlikely," Kennedy said as he was standing on the dock before heading out for an afternoon sail on his 50-foot schooner.

Senator Barack Obama has agreed to take Kennedy's place, according to a statement released by Kennedy's office this afternoon:

Romney creates PAC amid VP speculation

Former Gov. Mitt Romney is launching a political action committee that will support candidates who agree with positions he took during his failed presidential campaign.

The Free and Strong America PAC believes in a strong military, free markets, low taxes and small government.

In a news release today, the PAC said its first beneficiaries include Rep. Tom Feeney of Florida, Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota and Rep. Connie Mack of Florida.

OT- I was reading up on Bobby Jindal last night. He has two strikes against him.
He is very young and Louisiana doesn't want to let him go.
A huge plus in his favor is his experience in Medicaid and Medicare reform.
He has been in Congress so he knows the score.
He has exceutive experience as La. Sec. of Health and federal Asst Sec Health and Human Services....and (briefly) as governor.
His experience, in other words, is at least as good as Obama's.

To top it off, he is a Catholic...............key demographic there.
He's good looking and so is his whole family.

He could siphon off some youth votes, w/o alienating unyouth like me.

I'm no lawyer, but the way I see this, calling for the murder of the President of the United States is tantamount to treason. That is assuming TomIII is a citizen of the United States.

You know, I felt pretty ambivalent about prayers and whatnot extended to Ted Kennedy in the comments of this site, and apparently Michelle's.

I am not saying that I wish the man any physical harm; I don't, and what he's going through is terrible.

But there are so many people around the world dying from brain cancer. We don't hear of them, we don't know who they are, we don't consciously think of them, let alone pray for them.

The only reason we even know of this one man's tragedy is because he's an infamous politician. He has brought himself in the public eye by political actions/positions, which I think, have been harmful to this country.

But he gets attention nevertheless, and even his opponents pray for his recovery? Out of respect for the thousands+ people I don't know anything about, who die alone in hospital rooms of brain cancer, I will not pray for him (well that goes without saying, I'm not religious) but I won't even cry my heart out for him.

I wish him well, that's that, but no more. No touchy feely.

Leftists should be amazed and learn a lesson or two about human decency for the very fact that the vast majority of users in "right-wing sites" are praying for this guy. You can all imagine the levels of hateful seething/gloating from their camp if say, Cheney had been diagnosed with brain cancer.

Dianna,

I love your phrase -- "kibble war." In all seriousness, though, I have a new twist on "the labor theory of value."

Every object I own requires some sort of upkeep in the form of labor. Some objects are necessary so the labor is, unfortunately, necessary. Many objects take a lot of upkeep for ... little joy.
Clothing, for example. I have rid myself of almost 90 percent of my clothing/shoes/crap. What a relief! I'm selling the big house and moving to something smaller. I'm going to insist that the architect design it in such a way that it is incredibly easy and cheap to keep up. I have two major sins -- books and art. I justify them by claiming they require very little labor.

So, I look at an object and say to myself, "Is this XXXX worth my time, money and effort?" Usually the answer is, "No."

I think I'm winning the war, one kibble at a time!

OT, just a news note for folks.

My area of Colorado has been smashed hard by a number of tornadoes this morning. Many areas well north of Denver and within a few miles of the I-25 corridor have been hit pretty hard. The wost damage appears to be in the Windsor, where a tornado up to a mile wide passed through. From aerial shots, the damage across wide areas is massive, many millions of dollars, possibly hundreds of millions in damage.

This outbreak has been fatal, exact number unknown. From reports, it's possible that hundreds have been injured. A daycare center was evacuated to a bank next door just before the tornado hit, 130 kids were sheltered in the vault and unhurt.

We are under the gun into around 8 tonight, these tornadoes have been moving in the highly unusual direction of northwest. The area of greatest concern includes the entire greater Denver metro area. It may be the most costly outbreak in Colorado history.

Let's look at the comments at WaPo when Reagan died. Or when Tony Snow got cancer. Howard Kurtz is the hypocrite's hypocrite.

This is an excellent example of how the liberal fascist mindset gets baked into a culture. Anyone to the right of Hillary Clinton is expected to abjectly censor themselves on all kinds of subjects because "everyone knows they're 'bad'." If they don't, they are subject to shaming in the public square. Meanwhile, the "right thinking" people have free rein to be total pigs.

Ouch.

I called a friend awhile ago and she was at the game. Behind home plate. I love her, but if she can name more than four of the players I'll be shocked. How she got those seats is a mystery....

Flukes happen. I'm not much of a baseball fan, but went to a few games a year when I was in college. The best seats I ever had for a Baseball game were third row, directly behind home plate at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego sometime in the early 90s. As my girlfriend and I were walking up to the ticket window, a season ticket holder approached us and asked if we wanted a pair of tickets for lower level, and sold them to us for the then current $11 face value. That was a fun day. Don't remember the opposing team, but the Padres won and I got to see Tony Gwynn hitting up close.

RE: [OT] Pray, Brother. Pray

I moved from Denver to Pueblo in 2003.

Our season, over the last two years, has been August. In 2006, a fly-over took down limbs off of two 100+ year-old trees in my yard. No damage to the house. But we had to take out one tree the following year as it was leaning towards the neighbors.

Last August a massive hail storm roared through town.

I heard several 'cracks', like high-powered rifle rounds impacting on brick.

The distaff and I stepped out onto the back porch hearing numerous other impacts and prayed to God for protection from this onslaught. The hail instantly stopped.

For miles in every directly, houses have been re-roofed. But not ours....thank God.

My husband commented once on seeing some guy by the side of the highway picking up cans that at the current price at the time, aluminum was selling for around 50 cents a pound. It takes a lot of cans to make a pound of aluminum so on a good day, you could maybe pick up a half a pound per hour.

He'd add excitement to the GOP ticket.

That's impressive. Sometimes it's just luck, IMHO. In the August 28, 1990 tornado here (Plainfield-Joliet, IL) the high school in Plainfield was completely destroyed except for one hallway - the hallway all the students who where there for the sports practices were in. It wound up killing 29, but could've been much worse had it not been the first day of school when kids are in for only a few hours in the morning.

I don't presume to say what others are thinking, but I believe the particular, known individual becomes almost a symbol of the mortality and pain that is universal to the human condition. In a sense, the prayers & expressions of sympathy for Kennedy are for all who are suffering or have suffered. We are abstracting our common humanity in this case, so the particulars that separate us are, for the moment and in this context, ignored as irrelevant.

Now, I have to admit that if this were someone who, with full malice and forethought, inflicted great misery on others, I would probably dance on the man's grave. I cannot imagine shedding a single tear for Ted Bundy, much less Stalin. Some criminals have put themselves outside the pale of human sympathy simply because they themselves have chosen to be agents of death.

It's interesting to think about, though!

It really doesn't matter if you know anything about the team or sport as long as you have fun and pay attention. Seeing some of the chicks dressed for a nightclub instead of a game and talking to each other or on cell phones instead of watching the game is kind of infuriating.

Best seats I ever had were right behind the batters circle next to the Boston dugout.

re: #223 medaura18586

Being married to a cancer survivor, I pray for all who are suffering with cancer, even Ted Kennedy and Lynne Stewart. Love thy neighbor.

How Israeli fighter pilots threatened to blast Tony Blair’s jet out of sky

Tony Blair came within moments of being killed when two Israeli fighter aircraft threatened to shoot down a private jet taking him to a Middle East conference in the belief that it might have been staging a terrorist attack.

The warplanes were scrambled to intercept after the jet pilot failed to contact air traffic control. Mr Blair, the international community’s envoy to the Middle East, was flying from the World Economic Forum (WEF) summit in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to attend a major conference on private investment in the Palestinian city of Bethlehem.

The Israeli aircraft used to intercept Mr Blair’s plane would have been versions of the F16 or F15, armed with Shafrir and Python air-to-air missiles. Both missiles have proved to be devastatingly effective and versatile. The Shafrir 2 missile shot down nearly 100 aircraft in the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.

Air traffic controllers spotted a suspicious aircraft heading into Israeli air-space from the Sinai peninsula on Monday and made several attempts to establish contact. When the pilot failed to respond to their urgent requests, the Israelis scrambled two fighters to intercept what they feared could have been a terrorist attacker.

The fighters flew above Mr Blair’s civilian aircraft to indicate to the pilot that he was considered a suspect target, at which point he finally made contact. The pilot told them that he was carrying Mr Blair.

During the entire incident, Mr Blair – flying with other delegates from the WEF, who were also attending the Bethlehem conference – was not informed of the situation by the pilot.

House panel subpoenas Rove in justice probe

A US House of Representatives committee on Thursday subpoenaed President George W. Bush's former political guru Karl Rove to testify in a fierce political row over the firing of federal prosecutors.
The move was the latest bid by the Democratic-led Congress to probe the furor over claims the prosecutors were dismissed for political reasons, which contributed to the resignation of attorney general Alberto Gonzales last year.

I think I would like Bobby Jindal for national office no matter what his race is. It would be ludicrous to pretend that his race, which completely nullifies Obama's claim to the race card, is not a consideration though.

Indeed. If he were a blue-eyed blond, we'd still be looking at him as up-and-coming, especially given his work on Medicaid & Medicare reform.
I have no objection to considering race, ethnicity, religion, etc., all other things being equal. It's more or less the same as wanting to pick a Yankee as VP when you're a Southern candidate, or wanting to pick a Protestant if you're a Catholic.
But the key phrase for me is all other things being equal.

re: #322 Ward Cleaver

Being married to a cancer survivor, I pray for all who are suffering with cancer, even Ted Kennedy and Lynne Stewart. Love thy neighbor.

I understand that and sympathize with the position, however it's different to pray for people you don't even know and can't relate to or put a human face to (all the thousands who die every year of brain cancer, they're not much more than a statistic) than for this specific individual, Ted Kennedy.

When one prays or extends sympathies to cancer survivors/fighters in general, it is just paying tribute to a concept. It's not as touching and meaningful as including the names/pictures/life-stories of the actual people who suffer from it.

Ted Kennedy receives individualized prayers/sympathy, and I find it a bit unfair since the only reason we "know" him personally, or enough to offer him such personalized sympathies anyway, is because he is an infamous politician.

re: #296 wolfie

The guy is not Stalin by any means, and not nearly deserving of having people dance around his grave. But he is a corrupt politician who has inflicted harm on people: perhaps unknowingly, and it's hard to trace back exactly how the big government programs he has helped enact have hurt many on various levels (it's the curse of the untraceable which Henry Hazlit wrote about: you see the obvious, the concentrated measure, like the "happy" beneficiaries of public housing, but you don't see in how many ways people that money was taken away from through taxes, are more miserable and poor).

But I am not sure he is a good specimen for us to abstract on the general human tragedy of cancer and pay tribute to everyone suffering from it by praying for HIM. He has been a privileged corrupt politician involved in the death of one woman, that I know of. He's not a representative cancer afflicted average Joe.

Like I said... I'm ambivalent about it.

Here is a terror trial I didn't know about.

Prosecution's Final Witness in Local Terror Trial Testifies

May 22--After offering 22 days of testimony from a confidential informant, various FBI agents, and experts in computers, linguists, and terrorism Web sites, federal prosecutors called the last of its witnesses yesterday in the case against three local men charged with terrorism-related crimes.

Evan Kuhlmann, 29, of New York City testified in U.S. District Court in Toledo about the jihadist Web sites and forums accessed by the defendants.

The testimony was the last by the prosecution witnesses, but not the last of the evidence. The government is expected to present more information before resting its case today.

The defense team for Wassim Mazloum is then expected to call its first witness.

Mr. Amawi, 28; Marwan El-Hindi, 45, and Wassim Mazloum,

26, are each charged with planning to wage a "holy war" overseas using skills they learned on the Internet.

In the indictment released after their February, 2006, arrests, the government accused the three of conspiring to kill or injure people in the Middle East -- including U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq -- as well as providing "support and resources" to terrorists.

Mr. Amawi and Mr. El-Hindi also are charged with "distributing information regarding explosives."

I think lizards will agree that what are offensive about Teddy Kennedy are his leftist politics and his evading of personal responsibility for his drunkenness and his cavalier regard for women. We do not hate his poor soul as it suffers the tribulations of illness and old age. In fact, these tribulations are what connect him to all humans, of whatever political or moral standing.

And so, as he suffers, we commiserate. Perhaps we might wish that he take this opportunity to repent, but we cannot command repentance in anyone. We can only remark the tragedy. And we can only reflect that each of us too has done much that requires repentance.

490 akarra  Thu, May 22, 2008 9:23:30pm

I wish there was a way to keep the issue from getting to the "look at how bad so-and-so's comments section is." Not because I don't believe the comments sections on HuffPo and WashPo aren't bad - they're beyond awful. Rather, I think we can explain the bottom feeder behavior of most Leftists by just looking at what they stand for.

If you believe that values change as technology and society progress, then there's no need for any restraint in putting the forces against change down. What unites those of us who are conservative and some Right and Left-libertarians, as well as those of us who are more centrist, isn't that we oppose progress. Rather, we're merely like "wait a second, what if?"

We hesitate, for the most part, rather than diving into "omg the world can be better right now." For conservatives, the hesitation is built on "hold on a sec. Our ancestors were good people. How come the world wasn't perfect then?" For libertarians, some kind of principle that can be articulated and tested needs to be in play before change is advocated. That principle must increase freedom across the board - if evangelicals feel left out, that's something to consider, if it can't be wholly alleviated.

For more on this "we hesitate" idea, see my even more long winded rant here.
