Tech Note: New Comment Reporting Features

Thu, May 22, 2008 at 6:13:15 pm PDT

To help us keep track of what’s going on in our comments, tonight we have some new features in our “report” function.

The first thing you’ll notice is that there’s no longer a text link labeled “report” in the top line of each comment. Instead, there’s an icon that’s supposed to be an exclamation point (although some think it looks like Stinky Beaumont’s clue bat) and it’s been moved over to the right of the top line, next to the “Favorites” button.

When you click it, you’ll see one of those cool Web 2.0 “masking” effects (the background will be grayed out), and a dialog box will ask whether you’re “reporting” the comment for offensive or painfully inane moonbat content, or “recommending” it to us—as something we may want to cover on the front page, or for some other non-offended reason. You also have the option to cancel and forget the whole thing.

This new feature uses jQuery and the very compact jQuery BlockUI Plugin to mask out the background and display the custom dialog box.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

Charles,
Is the new button supposed to work even when logged out? Seems like that would be an easy way for a troll to harass you anonymously with endless baseless reports. I know I probably shouldn't give them any ideas.

I grew up in the Bronx, and there was plenty of weird sh-t going on. I was pretty streetwise at a young age and knew when and where to tread. The last place I would ever go was into some old guy's place looking to get drunk.

Guys who did stuff like that usually wound up on the wrong end of a beatdown.

I asked about that on the nail bomber thread, and thought it might be what it actually is, but wasn't sure, and didn't want to just click it to find out without knowing what it did.

Yes, you do get the dialog box first. That's because the dialog box happens in the Javascript layer, which doesn't know whether the user is logged in or not. All of the authentication stuff happens on the server.

Okay I have a question.

I just received an interesting bit of spam e-mail:

Hi {First_name},

I work for Wikio and I'm writing to you because {Site_title} is number {Top_blog_ranking_by_category} in our Politics rankings.

Wikio is the number 1 news aggregator in Europe, indexing over 55,000 English-language sources. We have only recently launched our Top Blog rankings, and many blogs are adding their badges. We have designed our rankings so as to make them the most comprehensive on the Internet - you can check them out in full and get more details on how they are compiled at http://www.wikio.com/blogs/top/politics

Would you be interested in the badge for your site?

Kind Regards,

Lisa Craig

It would have been nice if Ms. Craig had taken the trouble to actually fill in the blanks on the form letter. But I was curious so I checked my own blog's ranking on this site and found it ranked at 267 as a political blog.

Has anyone else received the message and what do you think?

LGF mentioned on Frontpage today. In case noone's seen it.

Kennedy's Illness, and the Left's

Immediately upon learning of the diagnosis, Kathryn Lopez posted a blog on National Review Online headlined “Oh No,” adding, “Our prayers obviously...” The May 19 edition of National Review Online carried an article entitled, “Praying for Senator Kennedy.” As of early yesterday morning, the post on Little Green Footballs announcing his illness had 1,036 comments. Here are a few representative samples:

“Well I wish him the best. If a cure is not possible, then as many quality months with his family as are possible.”

“I disagree with Senator Kennedy's politics, but he is a fellow American and a fellow human being so I sincerely pray for his recovery and wish his family well.”

“Prayers for the Ted and Kennedy family. Much strength and peace for them in the coming days.”

The Soros-funded Media Matters, try as it might to find evil right-wingers celebrating, found only a clip from Michael Savage. The average conservative, however much he disagreed with Ted Kennedy, wished him well.

I met a family living in Wheaton, Illinois who had converted an old church to a home for a family of seven. Two levels: upstairs was a gigantic living room with a piano area, pool table, pingpong table and nice gathering of sofas; the downstairs was the kitchen, dining area and bedrooms.

Each kid got a sunday school classroom as a bedroom.

It worked for this family.

Listening to Bob Grant, the callers are particularly passionate, I have the feeling that the correct people, including us, are soon going to stop accepting the unacceptable. Our nation is in danger, and the B.S. is flying all over the place. The people who are now, and may soon be in charge are by no means up to the task, or at best, unwilling to do what needs to be done. The people with the loudest voices, the biggest media coverage and the most dangerous and stupid ideas get their way almost every time. They have set our side up so that even the most common sense, purely solvent solution to any issue is shot down as radical or "cowboy." Every problem we face today is either a direct result or an "unintended" consequence of yet another abysmal liberal policy or idea, and yet seemingly the country is falling over itself to insure that even less qualified and more radical people are elected. This would be completely unacceptable if times were good, look around folks, things are not.
I know everyone here knows this, it is just a good idea to take a reality check from time to time because we tend to belittle things ourselves without realizing it, for instance, if a fauxtography incident happens, we will read about it, analyze it, discuss it, even laugh at it, all the while forgetting that the rest of the world believes it. That one f**king picture of the baby with the blue pacifier essentially allowed a rag tag group of thugs to neutralize a modern military power, thus leaving them to gather strength and making it far more costly and dangerous to beat them the next time. So basically, by doing it the liberal way, the problem is prolonged and the pain is increased. When we do it their way it fails, and then based on that failure they convince everybody they could do it better.
I do not know what to do, but I do have water, canned goods, ammo and Pop-Tarts. I am ready for anything.

I feel for you, Savage. Our oldest Daughter got married at 18 to a 30 yr old she was dating. He convinced her to do it and not mention it to us. After they did it, he came to hubby and asked permission, which was denied, as they had only known each other for 3 mos. My grandma had just taken a reverse mortgage on her home, close to a mil, and my daughter is her absolute favorite. She let the kid spend, unbeknownst to us, like a drunken sailor. Jackass son in law thought Dau had money, and wanted to get his grubs on it. When we figured out what was going on, we found out that he had hired a lawyer to try to get power of attorney over my grandmother, who is now 90,. Hubby left the house with a chain saw. Our daughter had no idea he had done this, and immediately filed for divorce, as she loves her great grandma. Only thing good about it is our beautiful 2 yr old granddaughter. He has never seen her, and refuses to. When Dau went to court for support, he turned his head away from the baby, and refused to even look at her. The judge was not impressed, and took a grand a week from him. Dau is now engaged to a wonderful man, who just graduated in March from US naval training in Chicago. Back to packing...

Daughter, looked at me and laughed. He tittered a bit.

First, magic is a matter of psychology. It doesn't actually work, and I've looked hard.

However, ritual is powerful stuff. It reassures us at a level that rational thought doesn't touch.

And, when dealing with one's own superstitions, it's best to take them on their own terms. The deep, dark, deadlies don't respond to rational argument at all well.

Oh, and, on the subject?

Altars in Catholicism are the site of a deeply magical transformation and contact - whenever the numinous touches the mundane, no matter what you think you believe, it's magical in a deep sense - and if one wants an altar to be holy, embedding relics of a person who has achieved sanctity is a sound magical practice.

Ten Simple Rules for
Dating My Daughter
Some thoughtful information for those who ARE daughters, WERE daughters, HAVE daughters, INTEND TO HAVE daughters, or INTEND TO DATE a daughter.
Rule One:
If you pull into my driveway and honk, you'd better be delivering a package, because you're sure not picking anything up.
Rule Two:
You do not touch my daughter in front of me. You may glance at her, so long as you do not peer at anything below her neck. If you cannot keep your eyes or hands off of my daughter's body, I will remove them.
Rule Three:
I am aware that it is considered fashionable for boys of your age to wear their trousers so loosely that they appear to be falling off their hips. Please don't take this as an insult, but you and all of your friends are complete idiots. Still, I want to be fair and open minded about this issue, so I propose his compromise: You may come to the door with your underwear showing and your pants ten sizes too big, and I will not object. However, in order to ensure that your clothes do not, in fact, come off during the course of your date with my daughter, I will take my electric nail gun and fasten your trousers securely in place to your waist.
Rule Four:
I'm sure you've been told that in today's world, sex without utilizing a "barrier method" of some kind can kill you. Let me elaborate: when it comes to sex, I am the barrier, and I will kill you.

re: #341 Killgore Trout

I just wanted you to know about that, in case you do consider it more. Back when I watched tv, I saw a couple shows about people renovating older building into homes- from old gas stations to churches. There are resources out there....and- I think it would be so you.

359 CapeCoddah  Thu, May 22, 2008 8:03:50pm

Rule Five:
In order for us to get to know each other, you may think we should talk about sports, politics, and other issues of the day. Please do not do this. The only information I require from you is an indication of when you expect to have my daughter safely back at my house, and the only word I need from you on his subject is "early."
Rule Six:
I have no doubt you are a popular fellow, with many opportunities to date other girls. This is fine with me as long as it is okay with my daughter. Otherwise, once you have gone out with my little girl, you will continue to date no one but her until she is finished with you. If you make her cry, I will make you cry.
Rule Seven:
As you stand in my front hallway, waiting for my daughter to appear, and more than an hour goes by, do not sigh and fidget. If you want to be on time for the movie, you should not be dating. My daughter is putting on her makeup, a process that can take longer than painting the Golden Gate Bridge. Instead of just standing there, why don't you do something useful, like changing the oil in my car?
Rule Eight:
The following places are not appropriate for a date with my daughter: Places where there are beds, sofas, or anything softer than a wooden stool. Places where there are no parents, policemen, or nuns within eyesight. Places where there is darkness. Places where there is dancing, holding hands, or happiness. Places where the ambient temperature is warm enough to induce my Daughter to wear shorts, tank tops, midriff T-shirts, or anything other than overalls, a sweater, and a goose down parka zipped up to her throat. Movies with a strong romantic or sexual theme are to be avoided. Movies, which feature chainsaws, are okay. Hockey games are okay. Old folks homes are better.
Rule Nine:
Do not lie to me. I may appear to be a pot-bellied, balding, middle-aged, dim-witted has-been. But on issues relating to my daughter, I am the all-knowing, merciless god of your universe. If I ask you where you are going and with whom, you have one chance to tell me the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have a shotgun, a shovel, and five acres behind the house. Do not trifle with me.
Rule Ten:
Be afraid. Be very afraid. It takes very little for me to mistake the sound of your car in the driveway for a chopper coming in over a rice paddy outside of Hanoi. When my Agent Orange starts acting up, the voices in my head frequently tell me to clean the guns as I wait for you to bring my daughter home. As soon as you pull into the driveway you should exit your car with both hands in plain sight. Speak the perimeter password, announce in a clear

Just wait until she's been in labor for a couple hours. I had one friend, very much a believer in natural childbirth until the actual labor pains started.

Considering that she completely panicked and went all whimpery and whiney with her Higgs contractions, I was unsurprised when her doctor had the epidural ready.

re: #394 savage_nation

One friend was placed in a warm water bath because she was having a hard time with labor; she was also violently allergic to a whole bunch of medications, which meant she had to go through it without any pharmaceutical aid. It relaxed her so much she refused to get out, and had the baby there.

The baby was fine, mom was fine, and unless there's a serious reason not to do it (consult the doctor!), it seems to be a good thing.

Though I had a green-stick fracture in my hand afterwards. Her husband had fainted, so I was doing the hand-holding. It's amazing how hard a woman in labor can grip.

When I had them removed, after time was up, I had my tubes tied at the same time, but they have never been able to find that last one, I still have it somewhere...that was 13 yrs ago (removal) I have never had a problem, but, Who knowh where and how it will show up. When they came for tha baby that night, his arm was cramped from holding it so rigid while he stared at her. Its a bitch, but so worth it, and as I said, after the baby is born, your daughter will not remember most of the pain. She will leave the hospital sayin it was not so bad after all. I cannot describe that feeling to you, it must be experienced to fully comprehend the fact that there are no words adequate enough to describe the feeling of that brand new life, that is a part of you.
