Update: Verbal Assault Memo a Hoax?

Fri, May 23, 2008 at 8:49:30 am PDT

Bob Owens investigated that memo about soldiers being verbally assaulted on the Washington DC Metro, and discovered there was less to it than meets the eye: Pajamas Media » Are Soldiers Really Being Assaulted on the DC Metro?

Every single thing must be fact checked.

2 Sharmuta  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:54:27am

There's enough crap working against our soldiers, and some asshole somewhere thinks they have to make stuff up? Come on- if you're going to make an effort to support the troops, leak something real.

3 lawhawk  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:55:02am
There is no pattern of verbal abuse against uniformed Department of Defense personnel in the DC Metro system. The memo sent to Department of Defense security managers was authored at a high level, and exaggerated the number of verbal assaults from one confirmed event into an apparent outbreak, while attempting to shift authorship to another federal agency.

Soldiers are not being systematically targeted by aggressive anti-war protesters in the Washington D.C. area, but someone within the Department of Defense is willing to stoke those fears, without merit.

It will be interesting to see where that goes. Wonder if Congressional Democrats will demand an investigation and hold hearings? I don't. It's pretty much a given that they'll do something along those lines, especially if they can embarrass the Administration or the Pentagon.

4 Intrepid  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:55:22am

There's enough dishonoring of our troops going on with Code pink and Winter Soldier II without stuff having to be made up.

The truth is enough.

5 madisonsfriend  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:56:11am

Well, a woman could certainly be harassed on Metro. there are plenty of incredibly awful kids(I mean teens) who ride metro- loud, rude, potty mouths.

6 RedSoxNation  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:56:27am

Any chance that it was leaked so that the story could be later reported as a hoax; this would allow future legitimate reports to all be questioned as potential hoaxs...boy this conspiracy stuff is easy and fun...and another thing, did you know that steel had melted for the first time on 9-11...

Calculated witlessness or moby at work?

14 OldLineTexan  Fri, May 23, 2008 8:58:12am

I watched a soldier accidentally get verbally abused in a hotel elevator in New Orleans in 2006. I was attending a convention with a "costume dinner" that usually includes military and pseudo-military dress (for you children of the '80s, think G.I. Joe, Real American Hero).

This particular soldier was in full dress uniform when the elevator was boarded by two kids from an ICYPAAS convention in the same hotel.

One kid remarked to the other about "baby killers".

The soldier asked him if he would like to be beaten in the elevator, the lobby, or on the street.

Both kids fell remarkably silent, and cleared the elevator pretty quickly when we reached the ground floor.

Moral: I think most if not all of our service people can handle it.

No need at all for a memo, especially one that appears to have no basis in truth.

Not that I am there very often (a few times a year), but the times I have been on the yellow line in DC I have never seen discourtesy extended to troops. When I saw that story the other day, I simply assumed things had deteriorated quite a bit.

22 lurking faith  Fri, May 23, 2008 9:04:27am

If whoever sent this out hadn't implied more than a single incident, and hadn't faked the source agency, they could have issued a perfectly appropriate "be aware" memo.

I'm very ticked off, and I do think somebody deserves a serious reprimand for this obvious PR fiasco.

34 Diamond Bullet  Fri, May 23, 2008 9:12:38am

As I said in the prior thread, I live in DC and commute on the Metro daily. I see uniformed troops all the time, and have never seen anyone give them any problems. In fact, at least during the commuting hours, it is very rare for anyone to talk to anyone else, we all just want to get moving and get to work. I might buy it if the claims of harassment were based on weekend travel (lots of tourists and protestors show up on weekends in DC) but then you don't have many uniformed personnel traveling.

There's also the matter that the notice tells people not to travel in uniform to avoid harrassment. That's suspiciously overboard.

Actually I wouldn't want to see a moonbat do something that stupid. You need to remember that to the moonbat (or any other barbarian) refusing to submit and fighting back are life threatening crimes that must be punished severely. It is an absolute certainty that the moonbat (or it's mother) will file an assault charge against the service member with the local prosecuting authority. Who will with close to absolute certainty be a barking moonbat themselves.

I got calle the embodiment of all evil on Earth by a moonbat simply for suggesting that we should shoot back at the self-appointed overlords.

I came back from VN in 1968, at Oakland Army Terminal, we weren't told anything one way or another about wearing uniforms. Back then, you had to be wearing the uniform to get a discount from the airlines. I walked all over San Francisco, Oakland and Seattle wearing the uniform, hippies all over, nobody bothered me. A few older people offered to buy me drinks. The hippies left me alone, although the fact I was carrying a captured rifle, which I still have, might have had something to do with it.

I see uniformed troops all the time, and have never seen anyone give them any problems.

With so many military/government employees in the DC area we should have been more skeptical of this story. Pretty much everybody in DC rush hour is going to a government job, the harassment does seem pretty unlikely.

62 LEGION  Fri, May 23, 2008 9:23:16am

Anyway- I remember during one of the anti-freedom/security marches (anti-war) - The Gathering of Eagles was down in DC counter protesting- and a wounded vet who spoke out against them reported on a talk show about how 4 or 5 big healthy but stupid Anti's followed and menaced him. Gee they are so brave. He came upon a traffic cop and the sissies backed off. Don't our uniformed troops supposedly have orders not to engage in replying to comments from 'citizens' anyway? We fellow citizens must step up and back them- especially us former military members. I remember hearing about how a Marine was being attacked by a gang on a subway- he called out asking for any other former Marines- a 76 year old passenger threw down his cane and stood by him and the gang backed off!

My middle school son (who revels in his conservatism compared to his classmates BTW) came home and told me that the teacher was leading a "discussion" on current events and told the kids that the soldiers in Iraq are really victims who were tricked into going there. He was mad-we've had discussions before about the bravery and altruism of people in the military and he's very proud of his great-grandfather, grandfather, uncle, and cousin who have served. I told him to ask the teacher and the kids how many people they actually know in the military. I bet the total sum is a big ZERO.

Whidbey bomb disposers pay high price to protect troops

WHIDBEY ISLAND NAVAL AIR STATION -- Six brass plaques with the names of six fallen sailors face visitors entering the headquarters building.

They are unusual in the way they were created -- by detonating a thin sheet of explosive over a plastic template, imprinting the names and design on the brass. The only sailors who make them are explosive ordnance technicians.

This is the headquarters of the Navy's Explosive Ordnance Detachment Mobil Unit 11, more simply called the EOD. The six were fellow bomb disposers, all killed in Iraq.

This highly select, perpetually tested band of 160 sailors are known for their cool under pressure. Their training never seems to end: underwater diving, parachuting and practicing ground warfare. They test themselves constantly to outthink bomb makers.

Exeter explosion: 'bomber' Nicky Reilly received text instruction

Investigating officers suspect Nicky Reilly, 22, who has learning difficulties, planned to commit suicide but do not think he could have constructed the bombs without help.

He received a message on his mobile phone on the day of the attacks which officers believe amounted to a "message of encouragement."

“He has a very low IQ and has received treatment on more than one occasion for mental illness. He would be very easily led," a police source said.

“This really does mark a low point for Muslim extremists. We are all horrified by what has happened here."

The comments came as armed police investigating the bombing arrested two men outside a cafe today.

Eyewitnesses said the arrests took place this afternoon in Old Town Street, in the centre of Plymouth, Reilly's home town.

Both men were reportedly searched and put into paper suits before being placed in unmarked cars

I don't think so Mandy. The draft was over the and that took a lot of the steam out of the protesters. My brother came home in 1969 and I asked him if anyone bothered him, he said no, just a few dirty looks. Most all of the vets I've asked said they had no trouble either. The moonbats might actually be worse nowadays to troops than they were then. I can say one thing for sure, I personally was in any mood for nonsense from hippy dippys and would have ended up in a major confrontation if any had bothered me, ditto for every vet I know. I don't think any service member would tolerate too much pushing.

re: #73 Ward Cleaver

Yeah, what was it? AK?

AK-47 would not be allowed. Selective fire weapon; counts as a machinegun under GCA 68 and would require a Class III "tax stamp"/license (there's a technicality in there somewhere that I don't comprehend, since I don't have one).

The closest you could have gotten to an AK would be an SKS-45 (Soviet) or the Chinese Type 56 (copy with different bayonet).

Sweet, although I am surprised they allowed it. There were plenty of American weapons in enemy hands; the M1 carbine from WW2 was passed out freely to "militias", which would lose them through combat or intimidation to the VC et. al.

I never understood the reasoning for harassing someone who's just got back from combat. Why not just leave them the hell alone?! But, we're talking about irrational assholes so logic doesn't apply.

My surprise was that they would allow an American weapon as a capture trophy, that's all. My uncle served four tours in VN and applied to bring back two captured pistols after his last tour, an FN Hi-Power and a 1911 Colt (WW1 vintage, apparently, without the A1 mods). The FN was allowed, the Colt paperwork was rejected and he left it in-country.

In the latest poll in Mexico about which institutions Mexicans trust more, the first two places were:
The Church and
The armed forces.

Some commenters seem to be astonished, but I think that many people respect loyalty, commitment, unselfishness, all the wonderful characteristics that service brings to individuals and country.
Actually, I was happy to see people appreciating those characteristiscs.

Two of the lowest in the list were:

They would have to make a revolution in those African countries, and a revolution that has as one of the few important demands the non-reelection of the president, as it was in Mexico.
One million dead between 1910 and 1922, and Obregon shot, a big chunk of it over no-reelection.

Actually all official documents carry the motto "No reeleccion" in Mexico. At least the federal documents.

And that goes for congressmen, mayors, governors.
No reelection for anybody.

Radical! lol

The mind boggles. *If* it was done for their protection, why not let them change on the bloody plane? Why not let them wear their uniforms in the first place and have them escorted by air-port employees?

Anyone who would attack them should never be allowed in an airport again, and put on a universal no-fly list. Except for one flight back to their country of origin; if they weren't British.

Truth be told, there is enough crap that military personnel put up with from moonbats that we do not need exaggerated stories to fly around the Internet. However, that being said, when I was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and attended university in my home state, I was repeatedly spit on and called baby killer by other students. The only ones that seemed to appreciate my military service were students from Israel. At the time, I did not know that I qualified for Israeli citizenship, otherwise I might have gone to Israel instead of Canada.
Be that as it may, I stayed in Alberta, Canada for almost 25 years before even considering returning to the United States. Canadians seemed to appreciate my U.S. military service a lot more than my former fellow students, and there seemed to be an underlying resentment against the draft dodgers from the U.S. I also met other former U.S. service people in Canada, one who was in the Parris Island series behind me. His series drill instructor was my former lead drill instructor, so we had a lot to talk about. He absolutely refused to return to his home country under any circumstances, but I decided to give it another shot ...

Interesting about your experience in Canada. A lot of people don't know that around 40,000 Canadians served in the US armed forces then. We got 40,000 first-rate soldiers, Canada got our draft dodgers, they got the worst end of the deal.

The Canadian Vietnam Veterans Memorial Association was created to recognize the efforts of those Canadians who chose to serve with the United States Forces during the Vietnam War. Between 1959 and 1975 approximately 40,000 Canadians did embark on a journey that would forever change their lives. Some never returned. Today we exist to promote awareness, support veterans, peacekeepers and to honour and remember those that lost their lives while serving in Vietnam.

He should have just done what my dad did and boxed it all up and sent it back in a crate labelled "Truck Parts".

And then he worked with Al Gore to invent the Internet!

Hmmm... I wish a moon bat would harass me verbally when I get back home.

It would be fun to listen to the ignorance. Stupid people amuse me, I would carry a tape recorder to record it and send a clip to the Lizards at LGF.

Hearing them rant, rave and demonstrate a lack of knowledge is always amusing and must be preserved for dull days when some moon bat suggests that Liberals are intelligent.

It would be even more fun to get a video of the confrontation and send it to Zombie.

I'm surprised we have not heard the Senator from Ohio crying about the poor treatment of troops...and the need for them to come home, if only to avoid the abuse...

Well me and a buddy heard a fella make disparaging remarks about some men in uniform in a restaurant. We both tensed because he looked like he wanted to approach them a couple of times.

Looks like I get to close another thread. I commented on the original story a few threads back. I got spit on at Boston University in November 1967. Not that big a deal really, just a dumb coed probably put up to it by her boyfriend who was 15 yards away. Might have felt/acted differently if it was a guy screaming at me, face twisted in rage.

About six months or a year ago, the Vietnam spitting incidents got some blogosphere play. The LLL were vigorously denying that it had actually happened back then. They based this assertion on the fact that few spitting incidents were ever actually reported in the press/TV. Thus, any reports that such incidents happened were greeted with hands clasped over ears. "Lalalala", you know the drill. Nevertheless, there was a lot of harassment of returning military personnel.

I was a bit leery of this current report also. I think the LLL know they are tarnished in the public eye for their Vietnam activities. So, they've removed that tactic from their training manuals. I talk to a lot of troops, mostly in airports. I've never had any of them speak of anyone spitting at them, although a few have mentioned other male relatives of the Vietnam era having such an experience. I suspect any incidents that might happen now are just moonbats who have failed to meet their CPE requirements.
