Obama: Hello, Sunshine!

Sat, May 24, 2008 at 11:30:23 am PDT

Look! Up in the sky, wearing a halo, immune from media criticism—it’s Gaffe Man!

At four different points during the speech, Obama referred to the town as “Sunshine,” as opposed to “Sunrise.” Amazingly, the crowd of 16,000 played along and no one corrected him. Sunrise is a city in Broward County, possibly best known for its role in 2000 presidential election.

Michelle Malkin posted a great compliation of this guy's notable gaffes, something I wouldn't count on seeing in the MSM anytime soon. Someone needs to ask him how to spell "potatoe." (sic)

I really can't believe these two are the best the Democratic party can come up with, speak volumes to that party's rapid devolution.

18 MamaWolf  Sat, May 24, 2008 11:37:39am

22 Roentgen  Sat, May 24, 2008 11:38:20am

A better gaffe was when Ted Kennedy tried to pronounce B-Ho's name and kept spitting out something like "Osama" instead. It sounded like vintage Ted Kennedy, but if there is a chance that the gaffe was the result if his medical condition, then this post would be in poor taste.

Right, the man who married his own cousin did such a great job convincing NO ONE to vote for him in the primaries, much less Florida, but he will surely win national office.

52 Sharmuta  Sat, May 24, 2008 11:46:45am
If the 16,000 in attendance noticed, they didn't make it known. There was no dropoff in applause as Obama experienced recently when he opened a speech in Sioux Falls, S.D. by declaring, "Thank you, Sioux City!"

But it's just flyover country, so who cares.

Some of my favorite Quayle-isms:

Mars is essentially in the same orbit... Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe.

...

What a waste it is to lose one's mind. Or not to have a mind is being very wasteful. How true that is.

I believe we are on an irreversible trend toward more freedom and democracy - but that could change.

In case you missed it, here is a partial list of things you can't talk about when it comes to Obama.

Don't talk about his wife
his pastor
his friends
his associates
his mother
his father
his grandmother
his religion
his liberalism
his ears
his name
his plan for "Change"
his flag pin
his education

his economic strategy
his intentions for discussions with lunatic heads of state
his dealings with Rezko
his links to Farrakhan
his experience in management
his appeasement
his gaffes
or his campaign staff.

Quayle was pretty much vindicated, in my mind, when I read an article by Barbara Dafoe Whitehead titled:

Dan Quayle Was Right

Divorce and out-of-wedlock childbirth are transforming the lives of American children. In the postwar generation more than 80 percent of children grew up in a family with two biological parents who were married to each other. By 1980 only 50 percent could expect to spend their entire childhood in an intact family. If current trends continue, less than half of all children born today will live continuously with their own mother and father throughout child hood. Most American children will spend several years in a single-mother family. Some will eventually live in stepparent families, but because stepfamilies are more likely to break up than intact (by which I mean two-biological-parent) families, an increasing number of children will experience family breakup two or even three times during childhood.

What he adds to McCain's ticket:
Catholic-------very important demographic
expert in Medicaid/Medicare reform------big issue
excitement-----not old & lily-white; good-looking & young
conservatism-----shore up the ranks by not picking a clear RINO

He's the man.
The media will try to focus on his age, but this could backfire. McCain too old, Jindal too young? They could spin out of control. And if they talk about inexperience, what about Obama?

I see many references to Dan Quayle. But what I'm thinking is this;if Quayle can misspell "potato" and it be a sign that he is unfit to be president on the tragic event the V.P were needed to take over the office, why isn't it also a sign for a man who doesn't even know the name of the town (in one of the 57 states) he is speaking in at the moment?

I see a HUGE double standard at work here. If the gaffe's by a conservative are proof they are unfit for office, the same standard of fitness should apply to a liberal as well.

Jindal is not that much younger than Obama is and he has nearly the same or better quantity of government experience but in a more responsible way. You're correct, it was not over a GAFFE. It was over soemthing much more important to the 'liberal" cause at the time. ANTI-FAMILY and ANTI-VALUES. They were trying, succesfully it has turned out, to make the point that a "family" does not need a mommy and a daddy. One (preferably a mommy) would do. His opening line was: "I am so glad to be in Florida. I am so glad to be in Sunshine." Wexler (D-FL) said Obama could have been speaking metaphorically about Florida's sunshine. Quayle was visiting a school class that was doing spelling practice. He sat in for the teacher and asked the kids to spell words that were written on cards. When a child spelled POTATO, he corrected the child because on the teacher's card it was written POTATOE.
Quayle assumed the teacher was right, I guess, which makes him kinda dumb.
But the real scandal was that the teacher was wrong. Needless to say, the media never reported this, although it should have been obvious that he was asking them question from a written source.

I've seen several references to Jindal in 2016. Sorry, after eight years of Dhimmicrat control a huge number of the new 'immigrants' will have been naturalized and a sufficient number of judges named to virtually guarantee one party rule for a long time. Then everyone can go to sleep and wait to suffer Europe's fate.

Some unforeseen event may temporarily put off this scenario but we've seen from what has happened since 911 that these only provide a temporary halt to the advancement of multicultural lunacy.

I remember reading the story behind the POTATOE gaffe. I'll try to find it. (I mean, I'll try to get one of my kids to find it, seeings how I'm a cyber-dunce. It was in an article about the state of education in the US.)

"Wolfie" -

Never knew that - QUAYLE just might have been sandbagged!

Obama draws rock-star-size crowd at Sunrise rally

SUNRISE — It was still dark outside Friday when the Young family got in line for an afternoon event in a 20,000-seat arena.

The mother and daughter did the same thing in the 1980s for Michael Jackson tickets. More recently, they woke the kids before dawn on the day Nintendo Wii hit the stores.

Even his sycophantic followers deal in the same empty platitudes as their hero:

His message resonates," said Pershonda Gadson, 36, daughter of Jeanette Young. "It's a message of hope, that you can do whatever you put your mind to. It's inspirational and it's unifying."

Oh, my god," Shanique Wilson, 17, screeched Friday as she was let onto the floor of the BankAtlantic Center.

"I'm going to tell my children and my children's children about this," she said. "This is the most exciting moment of my life."

Change! Hope! Errr, Stuff! Like, OMG, girlfriend!

For those of you who think it's "too soon" for Jindal, check his resume at Wiki.
Then remember that sometimes someday never comes.

What he adds to McCain's ticket:
Catholic-------very important demographic
expert in Medicaid/Medicare reform------big issue
excitement-----not old & lily-white; good-looking & young
conservatism-----shore up the ranks by not picking a clear RINO

He's the man.
The media will try to focus on his age, but this could backfire. McCain too old, Jindal too young? They could spin out of control. And if they talk about inexperience, what about Obama?
I think the plusses are bigger than the age thing.

No way should Jindal join McCain. Jindal's day will come, but not if he gets involed with a McCain lose in '08.

Panel 2 Pointy haired boss announces that the company has hired a guy to walk arround waving his arms to eep the lights on since the engineers don't move enough.

At first, it seemed as if Barack Obama might just be speaking figuratively, as is his wont sometimes. "How's it going, Sunshine? Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you everybody. It's good to be in Sunshine!" ... Or perhaps it was a term of endearment, similar to his recent (and later regretted) use of "sweetie" in speaking to a woman reporter.

But then he said it again, and again -- "When we are unified sunshine, nobody can stop us!" -- and it became clear: Obama thought he was in Sunshine, Fla. But he was not. He was in Sunrise, the name given to this particular swath of South Florida palm trees, bungalows and outlet stores.

What more do you want? Pitchforks at midnight? The dude screwed up the name of a town in Florida -- let's keep our heads, here.

"Oh and he says he wants to marry me, but he's against the formality of marriage and doesn't believe in wearing a wedding ring."

At which point the parents look at each other and the mother starts to tear up, and dad is trying to remember if they have the lawyer on speed dial.

re: #313 Cognito

It really wasn't a big deal. The annoyance lies in imagining that, with another candidate, the mistake would have been reported and commented on as evidence that he was stupid, or senile. Looking at your links, the reporters offer reasonable excuses instead.

From the first link, straight reporting with no critique or speculation
(would we have seen the same restraint with another party's candidate?):
"We've had a great three days campaigning here in Florida. But I regret that we couldn't campaign here earlier. But I promise you we're going to make up for some lost time," said the presidential hopeful, who initially referred several times to Sunrise as Sunshine.

From the second link, a list of helpful excuses:

"Perhaps Obama was thinking of one of the many songs thatinvolve sunshine, or perhaps he was just hot and tired. It's been a busy week for him in Florida, and it's very warm and humid. More than 90 degrees. Too much sunshine."

From the third link, the report offers an excuse from a Democratic ally:

U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, a Democrat who represents north and central Broward and is co-chairman of Obama's Florida campaign, said the candidate could have been speaking metaphorically about Florida’s sunshine.

From the fourth link, the excuse is right in the headline: Too Much Sun For Obama?

Perhaps all the sunshine here in the Sunshine State is getting to Barack Obama. On his third day of campaigning in the state, Obama notably flubbed the name of the city where his campaign rally was taking place. “I am so glad to be in Florida, and I am so glad to be in Sunshine,” Obama said at the top of his remarks. Unfortunately, the name of the city is “Sunrise.”

From the fifth link

At four different points during the speech, Obama referred to the town as “Sunshine,” as opposed to “Sunrise.” Amazingly, the crowd of 16,000 played along and no one corrected him.

Obama is forgiven by the crowd! Amazing! He must be quite a guy.

I think the reason that many criticize the media here is that in most of the coverage the reporter offers explanations and excuses of his/her own for the gaffe. I don't need their mind-reading in a report.

Otherwise, I have no problem. These gaffes are to expected from anyone who is giving so many speeches, and I'm all for cutting candidates a lot of slack. In itself, it's a little story of no importance.

Nevertheless, I can't help but read these things without the certainty that, if a Republican did this, the media would be all over it as evidence of stupidity or "being out of touch."

Confusing the name of a town in Florida is no big deal.

Reporters participating in establishing a mood, a forgiving stance toward one party candidate, his gaffes and his policies, and setting up a much more critical stance toward another party and its policies, is what lies under the surface of this 'Sunshine' incident.

I don't think he expected to be the front runner this year, though. I think he started out just jockeying for VP or in preparation for 2012.

Those aren't excuses. They're just making fun of the guy -- "Too Much Sunshine For Obama" is a barb, not a pass.

Perhaps Obama was thinking of one of the many songs thatinvolve sunshine, or perhaps he was just hot and tired. It's been a busy week for him in Florida, and it's very warm and humid. More than 90 degrees. Too much sunshine

speculative and making excuses

U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, a Democrat who represents north and central Broward and is co-chairman of Obama's Florida campaign, said the candidate could have been speaking metaphorically about Florida’s sunshine.

Attack would likely come from terrorist group X, Y or Z. All of whom, it would be safe to assume, would be supported by axis of evil partner A, B or C. Any President, I think, would be compelled to bring the full fury of a US response to one or more of the ABC menu items. I am not so sure that it will require a full courts finding before such a retaliation. On the contrary, there would be no innocents among our adversaries.

I do not promote willy nilly attack on enemies on the USA. But use of a weapon of mass destruction on the American people will demand a clearing of the game board. The people will demand it, as they should.

(Washington, DC) Congressman Robert Wexler issued the following statement in response to President Bush’s speech earlier today in the Israeli Knesset:
“I strongly reject President Bush’s politically calculated attack on Barack Obama in the Israeli Knesset today. It is clear that President Bush was directly attacking Senator Obama while at the same time unconscionably using the horrors of Nazi Germany and the Holocaust for political partisan gain.
I am disgusted by the President’s statement which was politically divisive and does nothing to address the security threats posed to Israel’s by its enemies Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah. The President’s words are hypocritical given that his own Administration is currently negotiating with Iran and our closest allies France, Germany, United Kingdom are directly negotiating with Iran on America’s behalf.
It is unprecedented that a sitting American President would stoop to this level and launch a deliberate attack on Barack Obama who is a staunch supporter of Israel.”

I hold McCain in the same contempt that you do. He was arrogant & insulting during the primaries to the party base.
He & his pal Huckabee ganged up on Romney, like two schhol yard brats that were jealous of the accomplished kid.

Reporters participating in establishing a mood, a forgiving stance toward one party candidate, his gaffes and his policies, and setting up a much more critical stance toward another party and its policies, is what lies under the surface of this 'Sunshine' incident.

Maybe...

I don't see any sign of slack being cut for Vice President Quayle back in 1992:

Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel - June 16, 1992:

HOT POTATOE: STUDENT IS CAUGHT UNDER QUAYLE'S SPELL
Dan Quayle puzzled elementary school students Monday in Trenton, N.J., at a spelling bee he held for them when he misspelled the word "potato."

On the second word he chose, Quayle made a young boy misspell the word.

Deseret News - June 16, 1992:

QUAYLE IN PICKLE OVER WAY HE SPELLED `POTATO'
Vice President Dan Quayle was in a pickle Tuesday over a potato, specifically over whether he can spell the humble vegetable's name as correctly as a 12-year-old.During a visit to Trenton's Rivera elementary school Monday, Quayle insisted at a spelling bee that 12-year-old William Figueroa spell it P-O-T-A-T-O-E on a blackboard, despite the youngster's protest that there was no final ``e'' in the word.

Various outlets published this AP story, under these headlines:

QUAYLE MASHES 'POTATO' SPELLING
SPELLING BEE PARTICIPANTS ABUZZ AS QUAYLE STUMBLES ON 'POTATO'
QUAYLE ERROR SPELLS CONFUSION
(AP) Vice President Dan Quayle puzzled elementary school students at a spelling bee during a visit to Trenton, N.J., on Monday when he misspelled the word potato. A boy went to the blackboard in a classroom at Rivera Elementary School, wrote "potato" and then was told by Quayle he was missing a letter. When the boy added an "e," making the word "potatoe," Quayle praised him.

I haven't seen him reach out to Conservatives or Christians yet. If he had he'd have fired Juan Hernandez as his La Raza Atzatlan outreach coordinator and some of the other characters he's got working for him.

As useless as this is, here goes.

The issue here is not that the press sort of noticed the gaffe. The difference is in how the press covered it compared to how it covers gaffes made by republican or conservative candidates. The "too much sunshine" comment by the one reporter is hardly a dig, particularly when compared to the incessant coverage of the Quayle "potatoe" incident. The Miami Herald, while mentioning the incident, only did so 3/4 of the way into the story and then made it a single sentence that could easily be overlooked.

This, along with the 57 states comment, the lack of Arab translators in Afghanistan, his lack of understanding of economic principles, as well as others don't point to a very good candidate. What is annoying is the pass this guy keeps getting from the press.

I SURELY HOPE SO...

re: #83 hermeneutics

A Newsweek poll had Obama's favorability at approximately 55 percent and unfavorability at 45 percent. Interestingly, McCain had identical numbers.

Wonder why.

Hard to understand Newsweek havin Obama at 45% negative. And, having McCain the same. I would have thought they would have McCain 68% negative...

Dick Cheney has done much as our VP, shoring up support, encouraging parts of the American electorate that routinely are the laughingstock of US media.

Why would you want to saddle us with a naive, inexperienced number 2?

Apparently, you know nothing about Bobby Jindal. As the attached editorial states, "he has more executive and legislative experience than both Clinton and Obama combined"...

Sunshine go away today
I don't feel much like dancing
Some man's gone, he's tried to run my life
Don't know what he's asking

He tells me I'd better get in line
Can't hear what he's saying
When I grow up I'm going to make it mine
But these aren't dues I been paying

How much does it cost, I'll buy it
The time is all we've lost, I'll try it
But he can't even run his own life
I'll be d*mned if he'll run mine, Sunshine

Why don't we have our lawmakers take IQ tests?

My guess would be because IQ has little or nothing to do with common sense, which is what is really needed. Me, I'd rather have lawyers forbidden from becoming lawmakers, and have folks who have to deal with real life instead. You know -- farmers, mechanics, truckers, housewives, others who have to have common sense simply to survive.

Those who want to defeat Obama in November should stay away from this kind of criticism. It's like accusing Obama of not knowing how many states there are (as has been done). What is relevant is the fact that if McCain had made a similar unimportant mistake they would say he is too old. If that's the slant here, ok; otherwise, it takes the people's eye off the ball (the issues).

re: #410 sattv4u2

Here's another "media lesson" There are a couple of places for humor in newspapers. The comics, obviously. The other is editorials, where people can express OPINIONS (be they humorous or serious). the NEWS part of the NEWSpaper is reserved for that. NEWS!

There are two old "newspaper" sayings

#1, if it bleed it leads

#2, you can have your own OPINION (hence the OP/ ED pages) but you can't have your own FACTS

Now instead of filing those away READ them and you justre: #416 LeePro

Excellent points. Unfortunately, folks like Cognito are too busy "doing their own thing" (whatever that is!) to actually LEARN from such actual i.n.f.o.r.m.a.t.i.o.n.

It's gotten to the point of being sadly disgusting!

Um, let's see, Hussein Obama won't wear his American Flag lapel pin, he won't put his hand over his heart during the National Anthem, at least when he's in the company of moonbats, which is nearly all the time, and he thinks there's 57 states with two to go.

The issues are, he is incompetent to be in politics first off, look at his record, he has done nothing but vote to tear down the Constitution, in fact, if he has his way, he will abolish it, for the sake of the world.

"We can't drive SUV's, eat anything we want, keep our homes at 72 degrees and expect the rest of the world to say, OK"

Barack Hussein Obama.

Sheesh!

re: #438 Independent Voter123

We have already seen McCain slammed for everything from saying rude words which he didn't say to his wife; of being senile; of making gaffes-- and lest you forget the constant CONSTANT derision of Bush and Quayle.

What's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

It's not criticism, it's merely looking at him without swoon-a-vision.

CRITICISMS of BHussein can stand alone based solely upon his MORONIC policies and his pandering tactics.

But...he holds himself as above it all-- but he's not.

And frankly, his SELF-IMAGINED DESTINY as the free world's benevolent Messiah of the unwashed and ignorant gun-toting, God worshipping, bitter whitefolk, has evolved into him standing high above the madding crowd on HIS pedestal of "righteous lord above all" and he needs to be reminded that he is not, afterall, a messiah.

He's a bungling, bumbling, Marxist socialist, America-hating LITTLE MAN with a big-mouthed, hate-filled wife and a race-baiting hate-filled "spiritual advisor and mentor" along with numerous Chicago-political-machine sleazebag associates.

Finally, lelt me quote #431 AZfederalist above:

"The issue here is not that the press sort of noticed the gaffe. The difference is in how the press covered it compared to how it covers gaffes made by republican or conservative candidates. The "too much sunshine" comment by the one reporter is hardly a dig, particularly when compared to the incessant coverage of the Quayle "potatoe" incident."

Stick your "independentvoter" head in the sand and the rest of us will remain on task exposing BHussein for what he is without losing one night's sleep that you will find our diligence to be irrelevant or even offensive.
BHussein will agree with you, though,100%. But he'll use the term "distraction" instead of "irrelevant."

442 6pat6  Sat, May 24, 2008 5:50:12pm

I remember when V-Pres Quayle screwed up the word "potato"...the prickless press dogged him for YEARS over one simple "gaffe". B. Hussein makes many gaffes every time he opens his mouth in public, and gosh! no one in the press notices.

Of course, no double standard exists.

443 spynverzyon  Sat, May 24, 2008 5:50:57pm

Obama just wanted to make sure people knew he wasn't lip synching.

444 republic  Sat, May 24, 2008 5:52:55pm

And another thing about this total hypocrite, anti-American punk Barack Hussein, he lectures Americans about "eating anything we want", while he's at $100,000.00 a plate dinners, eating $6000.00 caviar at about $800.00 a cracker full, sipping $1500.00 a bottle champaign, while being chauffeured around this country, jetting from city to city, leaving a "carbon footprint" equal to a million Americans, and he lectures us about "luxuries"?

The fact that some of this country even sees him as a legitimate candidate, means that those who support him, deserve what will come if he wins the Presidency.

I'm surprised tha "media' doesn't employ the effect of when one looks through a foggy area, in that everything appears ethereal and has a halo about it. The way they swoon over this dangerous fool is simply amazing. If all of the psychiatric profession weren't a bunch of screamin' Lefties, you'd think one of them would study the effect this asshat has on his flock of sheeple followers and acolytes.

Wait until election night, November, the msm will be telling people west of the Mississippi to not even bother voting, Obama is winning in a landslide, like Jon Cary, 2004.

re: #393 ashan
From the article you linked:

In the past few weeks, however, the O-gaffes have been proliferating....
"His campaign's almost impossibly high level of activity, mental and physical...is incredibly hard to maintain.... The temptation to maintain it psycho-pharmacologically is great, especially for someone with a history of drug use. The drugs of choice would be amphetamines or cocaine, which can cause amazing mistakes, errors of incredible stupidity."

In other words, perhaps something unnatural is keeping Obama malapropped up on the campaign trail.

This reply has to be a joke, right? You are making my point! By the way, if you really beleive Obama doesn't know how many states there are, you SHOULD NOT be allowed to vote (we all know he does). Keep it to the issues. Smarten up! The issues will defeat him.

#449 spynverzyon

Yep. He seems to be on something. You can be sure that he won't submit to a drug test. He should, however, make his medical records public like McCain did. Actually, I think that if he did that, he would make sure that it was "edited", just like his fake-o birth certificate. We don't know if he's actually born in the US - and I doubt that he was. He lied about Selma and a whole host of other stuff. Someone out there should have access to birth or hospital records.

4 change how we address him no middle name
