Tech Note: User Profiles Now with Ajax

Sat, May 24, 2008 at 3:07:23 pm PDT

As we continue to Ajaxify the LGF Blog Engine, the latest new feature is the user profile display, which appears when you click on a commenter’s personal icon. (Or if they haven’t uploaded a personal icon, the tiny green football.)

Instead of opening a new window with the profile data, it now uses an Ajax-driven dialog box, letting you check out a profile without leaving the page or opening a window. (Note: you’ll need to be logged in to your LGF account to see profiles in the comment threads.)

UPDATE at 5/24/08 4:10:43 pm:

If you prefer to view the profiles the old way, you can still do that too, by right-clicking on the user’s icon (on the top line of their comment), then choosing ‘Open in new tab’ or ‘Open in new window’ from the popup menu.

UPDATE at 5/24/08 5:35:57 pm:

Internet Explorer is the odd browser out again; version 6 is crazy slow with the new feature, and version 7 isn’t much better. So for now, the new Ajax profile is disabled for Internet Explorer users.

So does yours, Charles. Then I can't close the profile because I can't see the 'close' button. I have to close the tab, which knocks me off LGF.

Mine, too - my intentionally bloated original graphic is too big for the room, and the close button doesn't have an underscored shortcut - don't know if it can, in Ajax.

Did that. It's the size of your avatar which makes the dialog box push below the screen. Clicked on my own profile and it's fine. It's just a crapshoot for those who may have an avatar which renders larger.

And I'm comfortable with the size of my window. ;)

I noticed that but couldn't get the new pop out window to close.

Gonna try it again now.

Same thing here. Using Safari for windoz and Vista 1024x600 screen res.
Had to close Safari to get out of the new view.
Not good at all....

Can you make 'close this window' the default focus so that hitting enter will close the window?

Without the ability to scroll down it's not going to be very useful.

It's a good start, but needs more work.

Idiocy/stupidity is a permanent state, something that follows one from cradle to grave, with no known cure. I do not think you're an idiot.

His avatar is a perfect example of a key element of graphic design, particularly when designing logos.

You can make the original logo any size you like, but for it to be effective it must be graphically simple enough that it can be shrunk to 1" square and still be recognizable.

Charles, I tried the right-click new window on Sharmuta (random choice!), it worked fine. The whole time my pages/second perfmon indicator was pegged. IE6sp2. Yeah, I know, it's just about time to upgrade!

Ajax window worked fine, a few hours ago, except on the largest avatars.

#308 addendum

Britain's most prominent Muslim politician last night called for the return of the death penalty for extremists who urge the weak and vulnerable to carry out terrorist acts.
....
Lord Ahmed said: ‘Decent law-abiding Muslims are outraged that people who claim to be followers of Islam should prey on the mentally infirm and encourage them to murder people on a large scale. We should consider hanging for this type of crime.’

Now there's a good idea.

SAW/M-60E4 Free-for-all combo. Red dots on both. Perk 1:Bandolier. Perk 2:Maximum overkill (dual primary weapons). Perk 3: Steady aim (increased accuracy from the hip).

Our custom server doesn't allow the maximum overkill perk so I usually use the M-60E4/Red dot with bandolier, double-tap (doubled rate of fire), and UAV jammer.

I prefer maximum authority at maximum range for maximum duration - crushing the ego's of snipers everywhere.

But...

When the server is short handed (3vs3 or less) I run an M-1014 (shotgun)/Desert Eagle combo with 3 frags, UAV jammer, and dead silence. Using the Desert Eagle as my primary and the shottie for up close and personal.

Budwig is the name of a German doctor who studied nuclear physics in the body and understood what happened to various kinds of fats at the molecular level (this back in the 1930s!). She adapted her studies to medicine. You have to consume a fair amount of flaxseed oil (3-6 tablespoons a day) and cottage cheese, blended together to emulsify the oil, and then add all fruits and vegetables. Many things are prohibited which makes it hard for some people (meat, sugar, white flour, soda pop, beer). I figure my life is worth more than cake.

God save you from this disease forever, amen. I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

this is the first time i have seen a bear walking around and checking things out. my neighbor, who i called immediately says we have 3 bears roaming the area. a huge 8ft. one, a med. size one and a mother w/ 2 cubs.
well, it did run off when my dog started barking and i opened the window and hollered at it. i'm going to get the bear pepper spray.

Yup, I use IE7, and cannot understand FireFox at all. NY Grampa gave up trying to teach me. And my computer pro son, who has had infinite patience, actually had the nerve to laugh mercilessly when he threw his hands up in the air.

*snuffle* *snuffle*

Will there be a fix for the ever-recalcitrant IE7?

Even IE7 understands a slug from .45!

Prayers for your dad, too, {Sarah} In addition to the stuff I have to do for the cancer, I have end stage renal failure and have to do dialysis three days a week. But, sometimes there's an internet connection so I can surf. It's not all bad.

Now THAT is beautiful Zonie! REALLY! I was an ICU nurse for almost eight years, and I can tell you personally that some of the most whiny people in the world are dialysis patients. Granted, they have so many restrictions on them just to live (I don't really now what'd I'd do if I couldn't have a glass of water whenever I wanted it.) but there are a ton of them that are vocally whiny and hard to deal with! GREAT ATTITUDE especially with the other things you're going through! Way to go!

When I checked it earlier, before you defaulted it back to the old format, it was working fine in IE6 here. And not slow at all. I thought it was cool.

Ah, well...

FWIW, when I'm using Firefox here, it logs me out every time I go to another thread. It can get annoying, to say the least.

It works fine on smaller pages. The problems start to show up when there are a lot of comments and the page size and complexity increases. Internet Explorer 6/7 is horrible at traversing large HTML pages.

re: #407 Zonie

What's in your soup? I'm coveting it! Do you mind sharing.

Hope Charles doesn't mind...here it is:

ANTI-C SOUP

NOTE: IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU RUN THIS BY YOUR DOCTOR(s) FIRST! SOME OF THE INGREDIENTS MAY INTERFERE WITH CHEMO.

These ingredients make 5 HUGE servings (like a cereal bowl ¾ full).

You can delete any ingredient obviously that may cause gas or any other discomfort (like cabbage or broccoli). My review on the internet shows that the MOST IMPORTANT ingredients for fighting “c” are....
Shitake mushrooms, yellow onion, green onion, miso (light), and cabbage or a form of cabbage, turmeric, cumin, and cayenne.

Of course, all of these measurements are to MY taste. Please obviously adjust to yours.

I added and figured calories -- each serving is approximately 275 calories.

Use a 5-qt. Pot with lid. And use a baking pan (I use the throw-away aluminum)(small one 1” sides to bake the chicken)

Spices: 1 tbsp. Turmeric
2 tbsp. Cumin
Cayenne to taste (I use just a “splash”)
2 Bay leaves, whole
1 tbsp. Chopped basil leaves
Sea salt, ground
Black pepper (I like fresh ground!)
Paul Prudhomme vegetable seasoning for chicken only.
Paul Prudhomme poultry seasoning for chicken only.

Foods: 3 large chicken breasts, boneless and skinless
1 cup Shitake mushrooms, chopped but not too small.
1 cup broccoli (I used frozen, flowers only)
1 cup chopped cabbage (I used the packaged cole-slaw)
1 cup cut-up carrots (I used the “little” pre-washed ones that come in package, cut to small bite-size)
1 cup chopped yellow onion
2 tbsp. Grated ginger root
3 cloves garlic, diced
1 bunch green onions, chopped (green part only -- chives)
1-½ boxes of low-sodium, organic broth. I use Swanson
1 box vegetable and ½ box chicken
4 tbsp. Soy sauce (I buy from Asian market or health food
store)
3 tbsp. LIGHT miso (Can buy in Asian market or healthfood
store)
¼ cup of GOOD red wine (this is totally up to you to use
or not)
Good extra-virgin olive oil

NOW...TO PREPARE!

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees.

Trim fat from chicken. Spread olive oil over both sides and sprinkle the Paul Prudhomme vegetable seasoning and the poultry seasoning on both sides.
Bake at 375 degrees for 30 minutes.

In the pot, add

Broth
Soy sauce
Wine
Mushrooms
Broccoli
Cabbage
Carrots
Yellow onion
Ginger
Garlic

SAVE MISO AND GREEN ONIONS FOR THE VERY END TO GO IN WITH
CHOPPED UP CHICKEN.

Add ALL seasonings, EXCEPT PAUL PRUDHOMME STUFF! That Was ONLY for the chicken!
Stir really well.

Bring to boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer til carrots are done (about 20 min.)

By this time, chicken should be done, out and rested for 5 minutes or so. Cut up the chicken to bite-size.

When carrots are done -- add chicken, green onions and miso.
Stir and simmer for about 3 minutes (just long enough to warm everything).

Remove bay leaves! Enjoy....

Obviously, don't use chicken if doing vegetarian.

Me! 'Cept, the huge, wild, black cat that looks like a panther, and lives under my shed, might not like it..... ):

Heh. My old cat (RIP) was like that.

The mother cat is so protective of the babies that she's all but evicted the other two cats from the house (they were here first!). They have to sneak in when she's sleeping to get food.

The local Humane Society said they'd take the kittens when they're 8 weeks, but they weren't quite sure about the mother.

Big yes on the turmeric as an anti-inflammatory for auto-immune problems, but that's as far as I can speak. Actually, the onions, too.

And you know what works synergistically with them - mustard and/or horseradish, which are supposed to have pretty much the same active ingredient.

But these are for auto-immune, I can't speak to cancer for any of these.

There used to be a picture of him on the web but I'm having trouble finding it. There was another young soldier who coordinated the whole thing. He'd have us send our letters and packages straight to his home so they didn't have to go through the postal screening process, then he'd take things over to the hospital daily. The young man didn't have much in the way of family so I guess we became his family. It was a great feeling to be able to help him in some way.

Here, in the desert, we have desert rats. They construct huge, messy-looking mounds that can be several feet in diameter. Usually, I see them in the desert between huge boulders. Anyway, if you "dissect" their mounds, you'll find "rooms" approximately one-foot square. In each room is ONE object: a piece of foil, nut, old can, etc.

Grandpa Cracker's dearest friend was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma two years ago. He had all the *western* medical tests and was presented with a not-very-optimistic prognosis. He did some research and opted for treatment in the Bahamas that is not permitted in the US. His blood protein levels are now normal and he is asymptomatic.

This is just his experience, of course. Purely anecdotal.

They create a serum from his own blood somehow...sorry, not sure the exact procedure, even though I've been to the clinic with him....

He injects the serum several times per day, like a diabetic with insulin. He also takes lots of supplements, but no real dietary restrictions.

Here is a link to the web site. If I were diagnosed tomorrow, this is the first call I would make.

Both Hegel and Orwell understood that freedom was the highest social value. True, Orwell was a bit of a lefty, but when he lived, socialism did appear to be a path of liberation. Christopher Hitchens believed so; that is why he is so critical of what the left has become.

Yes, Bergen does his homework. This story is amazing. But I think the real message is Al Qaeda is dead, & the Jihadi movement is leaderless for now, but it will come back. How it comes back is unclear. Perhaps lead by Iran. Certainly if President Obama gets his way, the mullahs will take over.

Sharmuta, don't let the other lizards know [nudge, wink], but now and then I still read GoV. The kind of retreat to "blood and soil" in which you and I can see fascism is, to many Europeans, the only thing that can resist multi-culti socialism and its fawning attitude toward the jihadis. Europe's main problem is that it never had a Thomas Jefferson.

You and I can see that a true, classical liberalism wedded to a military determination to defend national sovereignty is the only salvation, but the overwhelming majority of Eurpeans cannot appreciate this middle path. It's going to be very, very nasty over there, when left and right take to the streets. And this time I doubt whether we Americans are going to pull their chestnuts out of the fire--certainly not with Bambi at the helm, and probably not even with McCain.

Which means that the repudiation of Al Qaeda's leaders by its former religious, military, and political guides will help hasten the implosion of the jihadist terrorist movement. As Churchill remarked after the battle of El Alamein in 1942, which he saw as turning the tide in World War II, "[T]his is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. me too. tho i do love meat, my husband only eats fish and chicken, whatever.
so i usually only make steaks for me and the dog. (usually he gets a beef or chicken stew)

Grandpa and I had steak tonight. I grilled a 12 oz steak, roasted some baby potatoes and tossed some humongo salads. We split the steak and still had about 5 ozs of trimmings left over for the dogs.

Tomorrow I will cook a whole chicken on my rotisserie. We'll eat it for a week.

I think it might be hard for the euros to admit *gasp* that the Americans might know a few things from which they could actually learn. I think until they get a grip on their anti-Americanism, they'll continue to repeat their own history.

Very true.

How sad it is how we humans so habitually resort to projection, to blaming somebody else for faults that are our own. We see it on the personal, the local, the national, and the international level. Perhaps this is our original sin, that we act wrongly and blame others for the results.

Does Obama own up to Wright's own racism? No, he tries to put it into the "context" of black as victim. Does a leftist European protest against Islamic honor killings? No, he waxes indignant over colonialism. As my father used to say: Is this a system?

Well, I am not competent to expound on theology, but I can sure sniff the danger that is coming our way. I am an old guy now, and I can hide away. But I am guessing you are young and still entangled in the necessities of getting a livelihood, perhaps raising a family. My son is 28. He just finished his schooling and must now embark on a career. He is married, and I hope he and his wife will give me a grandchild soon. But for him, for you, things must look dicey. Unfortunately, unlike you, he is somewhat hypnotized with this Obama fellow, and I can't find the way to wake him up without appearing like some kind of tyrant. ... Well, I didn't mean to load that onto you. I suppose that although on one level I am safe, I cannot escape what will face us all.

Happy Memorial Day, Sharmuta, and lizards all.

Yessiree. The plan is to soft-land with thrusters at about 68° N. latitude. It would be roughly equivalent to landing in ANWR on Earth. I believe NASA is 2 out of 3 for successful Mars softlandings (not counting the airbag landings). I hope they make it 3-for-4 tomorrow.

Yeah, it's a weird thing. We don't like it because we're told we don't like it. It's actually flavorless and just absorbs the flavours it's cooked with. It's very good for you.

Well, no one tells me what not to like, and that goes double for food. I'll try anything once (excluding organs blech!), and have liked about 90% of everything I've tried. The only downside to that is now I like so many things that I have a hard time making up my mind on what to eat.

A gal I used to know made me a dish w/ crumbled tofu, pasta, salsa, and some other stuff. The tofu reminded me of scrambled eggs (which I like very much).

One thing I'd like to eat more often if I could afford it is Emu: the other red meat.

Can't say I like any of the rock music that came out after the 80's, but some of the bands are OK. 3 Doors Down is a very pro-military rock band, hence my appreciation.

I actually have a wide range of musical taste.

Motown any day is great. I like country, and have been on a doo-wop kick as of late. Pretty much anything.

797 Noam Sayin'  Sat, May 24, 2008 8:23:42pm

Sitting in the back yard, the fire crackles over the chit-chat of the neighbor's garden party; motorcycles, recycling day, the herbs from the local market. A steady breeze blows from the southeast, carrying the smoldering aroma of rose brush and ironwood, and the remnant's of Noam's scooter crate. A siren wails in the distance; the dutiful cop on his way to a traffic accident. Noam peers over the screen of his laptop, past the newly planted tomatoes to the aberrant maple trees peering out under the trumpet vine as it wrestles the chain-link fence to the ground, patiently, year after passing year.

'It's chilly,' he thought to himself, taking a slow sip of bourbon, noticing he was almost hunkered down close to the fire for warmth, rather than enjoying the flickering flames gently consume the one-by-fours.

The prattle next door inevitibly turned to politics. Being good liberals, and making certain to establish their liberal bona fides, George Bush was quickly blamed for everything. Noam was tempted to jump the fence and introduce himself, 'Good evening, everyone. I'm Noam Sayin', and you wouldn't belive the shit I know.'

Then the sky opened up with a crack of lightening, sending the crowd indoors.

oh man, that was almost the beginning of a really great story..I was, frankly, waiting for the ass pounding etc...which COULD be the story of my life (if I was of a different, shall we say,persuasion)..okay..

Yeah, the rain ruined my fun, too. I had to gather up some stuff that shouldn't get wet and kind of lost my muse, there; went for the cheap applause.

Uh, it says I'm forbidden. But it also says something like 'SaraEvansCleavageBig', so I think I'm fine with missing it.

in fact,I think everybody should be having sex but I dont wanna buy some other cats girl dinner so he can..nor do I think that in a country ravaged by disaster should we be particularly concerned with controlling the birth rate, which in light of the circumstance should prolly be allowed to flourish...but that's just me..

It's not about just birth-control. It's also about disease prevention.

The Pistons are just toying with them..... giving them a false sense of security.

Youngster! I remember 61, I think...but being 70 is better, as we now have 3 grandchildren!

The oldest is 8, and she actually believed me when I told her I was at Plymouth Rock, and had been a Pilgrim! She now knows it was a bad joke on my part, as she told her teacher about it, and my daughter in law got an email about it, as she told her whole kindergarten class. Now she is going into third grade. This past Thanksgiving she was joking about it.

The sooner my son and his wife realize what the purpose of their marriage is--to give the old man his grandchild--the happier we all three will be! Time's a-wastin', you know.

Well, Nana, you are a Pilgrim, wending your way through this rocky road of life, trying to make sure the jihadis and lefties don't barbarize the highway.

re: #829 NY Nana

While I generally hate Boston sports teams (big time Yankee and Giant fan), I am rooting for the Celtics this year. All around good fundamentals, and they play like a team as opposed to a collection of selfish individuals. (The Knicks will be bad for a few more years)

re: #830 ContraJihadi

The kids will do this their way...ours are late bloomers, but it was worth the wait. I would have loved to be a much younger Nana, but all has turned out well. My Mum zt'l was so happy that I had my kids in my 20's and 1 in my early 30's, as she became a Nana in her mid-50's...but having a grandchild in your 50's, 60's, and even 70's? The connection is breathtaking.

I hope that you will get some wonderful news soon! I was an 'only', and I think that our 4 were a bit overwhelming, at first for my parents, but they loved every second. I am getting near to their ages when we lost them...

That zt'l. That's a Hebrew abbreviation for "deceased," no? My dad was Jewish (well, Hebrew anyway; he called himself an agnostic). My mom was gentile. As for me: I'll have a bagel with lox and cream cheese. More than that, I'll have my grandchild as soon as possible, thank you.

re: #835 savage_nation

Get thee to Canters! :)

I know, I know, Savage. I have to talk to my brother when he comes down from the Sierras. He's the one who has kept up the contacts.

But too trip on from Thursday: I don't think my Dad ever took us to Marine Land, but he loved going to Exposition Park, to the old museum. It was a less difficult neighborhood in the 50's, and I remember an exhibit of old WWI biplanes. I took a picture when I visited with my aunt in 1975. If I can find it, I'll try to upload it. He road around there back in 1941 when he was courting my Mom. They married shortly after Peal Harbor. ...

And I'll have that fresser on dark rye with mustard and sour kraut, with a green tomato on the side, thank you.

The Unraveling
by Peter Bergen and Paul Cruickshank
The jihadist revolt against bin Laden

A must read essay at, of all places, The New Republic. Although they don't actually come out and say it, the strategic response by the Bush administration to the 9-11 attacks has succeeded. The jihadi movement is dead & Osama bin Laden is blamed for it.
