Dear Madam,--

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

Rest in peace, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines.
And don't forget the ones still serving, like a few of my high school buddies in Baghdad right now.
God speed.

One is flying off my front porch, as it does every. Took a while to find a good flag that holds up. Nylon fades in about six months. Polyethylene is the best, twice as costly as nylon but it looks great!

15 6pat6  Mon, May 26, 2008 8:30:59am

That is one reason my avatar here is an American flag, and will be nothing else.

16 MacGregor  Mon, May 26, 2008 8:31:24am

Best wishes and memories for our men and women in service. Thank you for keeping the world from turning into a communist or islamic hell-hole. My heart-felt gratitude.

My grandfather's both served this great country, but came home safe and sound to start families (thank God).

But to the friends they left behind- may God bless them, and may we never forget that our Freedoms were safeguarded by their blood.

I could have done without the image of Carlos Mensia on the right side of this page. That Prick reminds me of Hugo Chavez more than Hugo Chavez does.

'And when the wind in the tree-tops roared,
The soldier asked from the deep dark grave:
'Did the banner flutter then?'
'Not so, my hero,' the wind replied.
'The fight is done, but the banner won,
Thy comrades of old have borne it hence,
Have borne it in triumph hence.'
Then the soldier spake from the deep dark grave:
'I am content.'
// Quoted by Oliver Wendell Holmes, 1895 - The Soldier's Faith.

I was a surface sailor not subs and it takes a special person to go out on those craft. It as near to space travel as you can get without leaving the planet. My thoughts are with your dad and all the other men and women who've made the ultimate sacrifice for us. Thanks for putting this up Charles. Today, and the 4th of July always get me by the throat, and eyes. My boys all gave me a big hug this morning so trying to type through misty eyes is a bit tough. Thank you Lizards for your kind words and prayers for our service people.

My prayers are with the men and women in uniform that sacrifice on a daily basis to keep me free.

Like some here on LGF, I am the only house on my block with my flag flying this morning.

God bless each and every soldier in every branch of service, we all owe you more than we could ever repay.

Because of what I have read on these threads this morning, I realized it is, despite what we thought all these years, proper and okay, to fly the flag that was on my WWII veteran father's coffin 16 1/2 years ago..........so I quick called my son who inherited that flag after my Mom died four years ago, and told him it was okay to fly it on such days as this........so he's putting it up.....

My little one came downstairs all sleepy eyed this morning. I greeted him with a good morning, then asked immediately what today is. He replied that today is the day we remember all the soldiers that died to protect us and keep us free. He’s 8 and he gets it. Today isn’t about beer and barbecue.

I’ve been up early smoking a brisket, but I’ve been reflecting on what a great country we are lucky to live in:

We are here because those that came before us were great men and women that gave. We in America are standing on sacred ground, delivered to us by the hand of God and enriched with the blood of its patriots. From that hallowed ground grows something that we were entrusted to keep alive. Let us not forget that we are the current caretakers for that wonderful freedom, bought at such an enormous cost. A high price that a few were called on to pay. Thanks to God, and to those that paid for our way with everything they had. Let us never forget, freedom isn’t free.

For me, the most moving war memorial in DC is the one that honors Korean War Vets.

I don't feel the same way about Taps anymore after being in the honr guard for a USS Arizona vet who was being laid to rest with his shipmates. We were in Pearl and happened to be the only ship in port and were tasked to provide the Navy honor guard to go with the Marine rifle squad. It was very, very powerful emotionally. Talked to the Sgt. afterwords and he said putting one of the Arizona guys to rest was the hardest thing emotionally for his squad to do.

The letter from Lincoln was the best first post ever. Very touching.

I am not articulate enough to speak about my emotions regarding vets and those who've made that sacrifice. All I can say is that I look differently upon those who have or still do wear a uniform.

I love seeing all the old vets with their ship's hats on at ceremonies (where it notes the ships they served on), the pride is still beaming from within. I cannot image living through some of the things they have.

I just have to say Thank You Vets.

He once told me a story about his time in Casablanca when he had some German POW's in the hospital. They could see from his name plate that he was a Jew and started making antisemitic remarks about him amongst themselves, never dreaming that he spoke German fluently because he had gone to medical school in Vienna. He told those SOB's that if they didn't shut up, he'd make sure that something very unpleasant happened to them. A salute to my Dad, WWII veteran, signal corps in the Pacific, Okinawa, and Japan, who passed away this year.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

And they sang it almost as if it were a hymn; closed all their concerts with it. They (or at least Crosby and Nash) may have been anti-war, but they most certainly didn't blame the warriors for the war.

In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

With apologies to Lt Col McCrae, I add these lines,

In Afghan hills the poppies grow,
Though no cross will dot the snow,
Where our sons and daughters die,
They held that sacred torch on high,
Do we have thanks enough to show?

We stand at a crossroads on this. I couldn't go to one of their concerts due to my allegiance to my fallen freinds and never heard their sentiment. but the "cause" is the soldier's order. the reason for VN was to stop the murdering Viet Cong, 7,500 prior to our commitment. We just poorly pulled out.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "cause" is the soldiers order. OUR cause was each other and quite candidly, if the South Vietnamese had had as much devotion to the freedom of South Vietnam, no where near the number of us would have had to serve and die or come home with ghosts peering over our shoulders.

How'd it work?

btw, just changed my avatar to my favorite pic of the Best Dog that Ever Lived™, taken last Memorial Day. She's looking into my eyes, paw-on-hand, though I've cropped my head out.

Hi Chris!

I LOVE this picture!

Lab-lovers-in-arms...please keep my labbiegirl in your thoughts as we count down the days/weeks/months that are remaining. Tough 'row to hoe' ain't it?

Muchas gracias a ellos y a los USA .

Cool beans, and you're welcome...Yes, I'm making new memories (and pics) with the new Best Dog™, who is sound asleep on the couch beside me after over three hours at the park today playing with other dogs.

I'm getting ready to fire up the grill, get some grub in me, then break out the motorcycle...

101st Airborne, 2/503rd. December 12, 1985.

ARMY SUPERIOR UNIT AWARD

Only one award was approved prior to the revision and it went to the 3d Battalion, 502d Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. Nearly 200 of the 248 soldiers that were killed in the plane crash in Gander, Newfoundland, were from the battalion and were on their way home in December 1985 from duty with the Multinational Force and Observers in the Sinai Desert.

I am proud of my block, there are a lot of flags out. My neighbor and I have a lot in common, his Dad was KIA in Nam, and like me, he scarcely knew his Dad. He is the one who talked me in to trying out for the SFPD, which, even though I did not make the cut, got me to shed some poundage, which is only a good thing.

"About him we may well wonder, as others have: As a child, did he play on some street in a great American city? Or did he work beside his father on a farm out in America's heartland? Did he marry? Did he have children? Did he look expectantly to return to a bride?
"We'll never know the answers to these questions about his life. We do know, though, why he died. He saw the horrors of war but bravely faced them, certain his own cause and his country's cause was a noble one; that he was fighting for human dignity, for free men everywhere.
"Today we pause to embrace him and all who served us so well in a war whose end offered no parades, no flags, and so little thanks. We can be worthy of the values and ideals for which our sons sacrificed - worthy of their courage in the face of a fear that few of us will ever experience - by honoring their commitment and devotion to duty and country."

- PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN at Arlington National Cemetery, May 28, 1984, to commemorate the tomb of the Unknown Soldier who fought during the Vietnam War.

My heart goes out to all those anguished parents, wives, children, brothers and sisters, friends and other family who have lost a beloved soldier. And also to the living soldiers, whose lives are forever altered by their war injuries or experiences -- things we can never fully understand as civilians, though we may humbly offer up our thanks.

This was one of the more moving memorial days that I've spent. Marching with these guys was especially great, two steps and all of us were in step, the shoulders were back and we looked like SOLDIERS.
I later had the signal honor of accompanying a 90year old vet, wheelchair bound, through the rest of the ceremonies.
And yes, Taps made me cry like a babe--always does.
Now, however, it's time to hoist a cold one in salute to those gone before--here's to ya, Dad.

336 IMissReagan  Mon, May 26, 2008 4:00:21pm

I wanted to post this last year but my computer decided to die. This was printed in my apartment's monthly newsletter. It is a poem written by Thomas Holmquist titled 'Twenty One Steps.'

Arlington where our unknown soldier lies
The place to honor those who gave their lives
Those that died that generations be free
May we remember them through eternity

This Unknown Soldier guarded day and night
By the choice of a few and with all their might
To show mankind their respect and dignity
To those who defended our lives and liberty

Twenty one steps, he takes twenty one steps
Eyes locked in honor for the soldier he guards
And twenty one seconds before he turns
To honor the soldiers who never returned

Twenty one steps until the end of time
For our lost soldiers we cannot find
They gave their lives for you and me
The price paid to preserve our dignity

So let's take twenty one steps, just twenty one steps
Lock our eyes in honor for our soldiers that died
And think for twenty one seconds about their sacrifice
To preserve our freedom and our children's lives.

re: #315 J.D. Hey J.D. - that was a great speech; but when I toured Arlington cemetary, somehwere around 1998 or so, the Tour Guide (or whomever he was) told us that the last remains of Vietnam Vets had been identified by DNA testing and been removed to be sent to the families of those men who had died. He also said that there are NO remains of Vietnam Veterans remaining at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

341 Shr_Nfr  Mon, May 26, 2008 5:39:05pm

It is simple. I thank all the people who have served their country. We should not forget those who, though by their actions, never saw combat, but who enlisted and prevented wars through their actions. My greatest respect to anyone who served in the military with a very few exceptions. There are not words that are capable of the profound effect you have had on freedom in this world, but let there be a "Thank You" from this guy. This extends to the people on the "home front" who made it possible for those who were in action to be effective by working their butts off to make the things the guys in combat used.

re: #12 snowcrash

I was a baby when my father was killed on the nuclear sub USS Thresher in 1963. 129 men lost in the blink of an eye. He was 29. I changed my avatar in memorial.

I remember that, even though I was a wee lad of 7 and an AF brat (who loved/loves subs as one of my late uncles served during WWII on the USS Parche (IIRC)). Sorry to hear of the loss of your father. The loss of the USS Scorpion was another sad memory.

I came across a book several summers ago about the incident, titled "The Death Of The USS Thresher". Worth a read if you are up to it. It appears to have been a structural modification/ repair failure that caused the loss. IIRC the Scorpion may have been lost due to a torpedo malfunction.

re: #104 Intrepid

For me, the most moving war memorial in DC is the one that honors Korean War Vets.

Ms. Clutch (who has been my beautiful wife 24 years today) worked for the architectural firm that designed that memorial. We got to go to the groundbreaking; still have the hat, T-shirt and pin from it. Also got to see GHB (he's taller than he's made out to be in the press) & Colin Powell from the stands.

For my dad - he is a WWII vet, had gone overseas to Germany and France, was present at the Battle of the Bulge (lost several men he knew there), lost one of his best friends from his small town in Missouri, he never complains about anything. I've learned so much from him, and he is the best dad ever. I am so lucky to have a dad like him.

349 akarra  Tue, May 27, 2008 1:08:54am

The noblest thing about many of our veterans is how they don't talk down to others, how they firmly believe that citizenship means equality in some sense and their taking bullets for perfect strangers here and the world over is their duty.

It's almost like as if they're implicitly saying: "War is our specific job, peace is all of our work all the time," and placing the heaviest weight on "peace."

I honestly can say when I think through people who have treated me well versus people who haven't, veterans rank high on the list of the former. I do think we can learn from our soldiers - we can learn to be noble and carry ourselves with a dignity and grace that makes everyone better.

Freedom is precious and needs to be cherished and defended, but the cost comes high.
My best to all those who have served and are currently serving.

You are not alone.
