Tech Note: Internet Explorer 'Adjustments'

Mon, May 26, 2008 at 6:39:35 pm PDT

Actually, they’re “regressions,” not “adjustments.” Versions 6 and 7 of Internet Explorer have bugs that prevent our new comment reporting and user profile features from working correctly; it appears that these versions of IE get very cranky if you try to create an IFRAME via Javascript that fills the entire page, when the page is larger than a certain size. (This is necessary to create the user interface “blocking” effect.) In our comments threads, we seem to hit the limit at around 200 comments. At that point, the background turns black instead of graying out, and I’ve even had IE6 crash on some longer threads. Ooch.

Those features are now disabled for Internet Explorer; if you click a user’s icon you’ll see the old familiar profile page in a new window. If you click the exclamation point icon to report a comment, you won’t get the choice to ‘Recommend’ it.

So the features still work in IE, they’re just not as majestic. This is called “degrading gracefully.” If you use Firefox, Safari, or any other browser, you can still breathe in the majesty.

For now, the spinoff link exclamation points still use the new Javascript reporting method; it gets slow in Internet Explorer, but doesn’t have the same problems as the long comment threads.

And by the way, I’ve also been Ajaxifying the administration back end, and not to blow my own trumpet or anything but it’s getting really really cool. I can now edit any front page entry in place, set its options (comments on/off, spinoff link auto-open, Digg JS link, etc.), title, tags, and more without ever reloading the page.

If you ever want to retire, you could market a template-ized version of the LGF blog engine, to corporations and media sites. You could make a pretty penny indeed.

Can I make a non-technical comment (why yes of course I can). I had a great day today. I got to psychologically torment someone who was a total jerkoff at work. Such fun.

Years ago, a colleague and I jokingly decided to create a Windows-like OS that actually worked. We were talking about Paneless and another "programmer" on the team actually freaked out, unable to believe that an OS other than Windows existed. And he was the one who conned management into thinking he knew what he was doing. Quiting that job was one of the happiest days of my life.

Charles, you're a good man for trying to make things work in IE. I suppose.

But why on earth would anybody use IE? When I installed Windows on my mac (via Parallels) the first and last thing I did with IE was to download Firefox. This was at the suggestion of a Windows IT guy at work.

Actually, he said that beyond downloading Firefox I should only use IE for manually running software updates. Seems that Micro$oft depends on some bugs features in IE to make those work.

Flash is another problem; it breaks Safari and Firefox as well. Good thing NoScript can keep Flush scripts from running.
Adobe software. Do you know the Flash server (used to serve Flash videos) creates a new copy of itself every 20 minutes to 2 hours, and then the old one goes away when all the connections are gone. This is because it will run out of memory or otherwise crash after a while Whereas Windows Media Server actually is quite reliable.

Actually I remember the Internet from the 70's. It was still called ARPANET and connected a few mainframes at major universities and government research sites.

re: #27 clgood

Unfortunately, where I work, the enterprise management software (that includes various time-reporting and other accounting features), SAP implementation requires that we use IE. They coded for Msoft's bugs and also did so for some of the other enterprise software like our web-based travel expense system. Oh, and only IE6, apparently Msoft added new bugs in IE7 that even our enterprise people have not yet figured out how to exploit and that break the existing software. The good news is that FireFox has a plug-in that runs these applications under IE in FireFox tabs. So, I'm running Firefox with IE tabs when needed. At work

Linux doesn't do IE. Sometimes that's good, and sometimes that's bad depending on the web site one is trying to view.

two months ago I was having lots of problems with IE on LGF so I tried firefox out--it worked a lot better but when I try to go to a link posted it says I need some kind of plug in and when I try to download them--it fails so If I want to be able to listen to any songs or any links posted I have to use IE--If I just want to read and everything run smoothly I have to use firefox---what is a person to do?---I just switch back and forth---LOL!

Oh my yes. I remember growing up one of the AM radio stations had a contest in which listeners were supposed to guess which song would be played the most in a certain period of time and the number of times it would be played. Yep, Debbie Boone, "You Light Up My Life". I can still here the winner's vocal entry and her somewhat interesting accent, (Can't do it justice in type), but, "Debbie Boonnn, Yooou Light up My Liffe" was kind of how it sounded.

/too bad, it was a nice song -- just not so nice after the 12,555'th time we heard it!

Have you checked out the add-ons for FF? There might be something to help ya. Also, go to Tools and then to Options then Content - that's where you can set how certain file types are handled by FF.

In our comments threads, we seem to hit the limit at around 200 comments. At that point, the background turns black instead of graying out, and I’ve even had IE6 crash on some longer threads.

I have used firefox and ie6. Odd, I have never experienced black backgrounds or crashes on threads with over 1000 comments – using ie6. I’m currently using ie6 (2900 series) on and the os is 5.1.2900. As other posters have noted ie6 - 7 is mandatory for some programs and sites – so I gotta use it.

Compatibility With Old Add-Ons - NOT SO GOOD - like NO PLUG-IN FOR WINDOWS MEDIA 11, Not Compatible with "Foxy-Tunes." This is LAME!

Glad I left FireFox 2 in the machine for as required usage.

I'll never understand why the world tolerates MS, and everyone just doesn't go to Mac.

I work with both, and there's a world of difference. Is it because people can't admit they just spent $1000 on an un-intuitive, malware riddled, piece of PC garbage?

Ahh, you sound like a rabid Apple fanatic...the problem with your type is that you tend to look down your nose on those who use Windows (either by choice or not) and ignore any shortcomings with anything coming out of Cupertino. My general view on PC vs. Mac is use what you like and what you need it for. Some people need or want a Windows PC for things they do, likewise with Macs, people who run Linux, etc. Personally, while I love my iPod and covet the upcoming 3G iPhone, I wouldn't buy a Mac if you paid me, because I like to tinker my machine, hardware and software.

For the record, I triple-boot Vista Ultimate, XP Pro, and Mandriva Linux...and I like it ;)

Do Safari and Firefox use some of the same code/engine/whatever? Just wondering. They seem to have some similarities.

58 jas88  Mon, May 26, 2008 11:52:14pm

talon: speaking as a Mac-using Windows and Linux sysadmin, who spent 3-4 hours yesterday trying to clean up the mess IE had managed to get itself into on the company Chairman's home PC over the weekend (two days after I spent the same amount of time scraping the viruses etc off it), the trouble is that the Mac fanatics do have a valid point: it infuriates me that people tolerate junk like IE. I'm not saying Safari's perfect (I've had it crash on me quite a few times as well), but it and Firefox are so far ahead of IE it's ridiculous to have to cripple websites and systems to hack around MS's bugs and insecurities.

Uncle Joe: It's not that they share code — Safari is based on the open-source WebKit engine, Firefox on Mozilla's Gecko engine — but that they actually make an effort to implement standards, which makes them a lot like every other browser and very different from IE. I can write a standards-compliant web page and test it on 50 different browsers, and in almost every case the only anomalies will be on IE due to Microsoft failing to implement the standards properly.

Charles: Just creating the IFRAME the size of the viewport, rather than the full size of the page, should get around this particular bug. I know, we all hate the idea of putting in hacks specific to one browser's defects, but this looks like just another case where we have to clean up after MS.

(Then again, perhaps if more websites go this route, giving IE users an inferior experience *and telling them about it* these bugs will become extinct sooner...)

re: #60 astronmr20

Well, IE7 did fix some of the most glaring and irritating bugs of IE6, and apparently IE8 actually makes an effort to comply with standards instead of ignoring them completely to impose their own agenda, so for the last two versions it has actually been moving in the right direction. Still a huge amount of distance to cover to catch up with the modern browsers, of course, but at least they're making an effort at last!

My wife (an expert programmer) also finds that things work in every browser (EXCEPT) IE. Microsoft has long ago lost any pretence of competence in creativity, reliability, or security. Period. Thanks to my spouse, we're now an Apple household, with a Linux machine there to add to the fun. Oh, there is an XP machine (forbidden to connect to the net) there to confirm that IE programmers should be sent to Yugo school in order to step UP to Yugo quality.

Unfortunately, that won't work; the IFRAME has to be the full size of the page in order to properly block interaction.

re: #65 Charles

Speaking of Iframe... Does anyone else remember when this was used to infect computers? Some Russian crime syndicate under the name "Russian Business Network" was behind it, and they got some pretty major sites infected like the Bank of India and Beer.com, and all you had to do was to browse the site without the latest updates to get infected. Essentially, all you had to do was view a banner containing the exploit, and you would be infected with whatever they wanted to infect you with.

68 TheUnrepentantGeek  Wed, May 28, 2008 10:24:50am

I just started teaching myself HTML and CSS (yeah I know, I'm coming late to the party) and I've already developed an abiding distaste for Internet Explorer. I'd been using Firefox for years just to rebel a bit, and only now am I realizing how much better it is...
