Mars Photo of the Day

Mon, May 26, 2008 at 6:55:52 pm PDT

How cool is this? A satellite orbiting Mars actually got a photo of the Phoenix probe parachuting down to the surface.

PASADENA, California (Reuters) - A sharp-eyed Mars orbiter snapped an image of sister probe Phoenix descending through Martian skies toward a polar landing site to search for water and assess conditions for life, mission managers said on Monday.

Phoenix touched down at 4:53 p.m. PDT (7:53 p.m. EDT/2353 GMT) on Sunday, becoming the first spacecraft to reach a polar region of Mars. Problems during descent doomed NASA’s first polar lander in 1999.

The unprecedented image, taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as a result of careful planning and good luck, shows the small probe dangling beneath its parachute.

The original Mars Polar Lander crashed. This is a replacement, using instruments for another mission that was canceled while they figured out why the first one crashed. So it rose from the ashes of two earlier missions.

A couple of days ago I (a doctor) was running on my treadmill, watching a DVD by Louie Giglio...and I was BLOWN AWAY!

He (Louie) was talking about how our universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder. At this point I am LOVING it (fascinating from a medical standpoint, you know.) .....and I was remembering how I was constantly amazed during medical school as I learned more and more about God's handiwork. I remember so many times thinking....'How can ANYONE deny that a Creator did all of this?'

Louie went on to talk about how we can trust that the God who created all this, also has the power to hold it all together when things seem to be falling apart...how our loving Creator is also our sustainer.

And then I lost my breath. And it wasn't because I was running my treadmill, either!
It was because he started talking about laminin. I knew about laminin. Here is how wikipedia describes them :'Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue.' You see....laminins are what hold us together....LITERALLY. They are cell adhesion molecules. They are what holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart. And I knew all this already. But what I didn't know is what laminin LOOKED LIKE.

But now I do. And I have thought about it a thousand times since (already)....
Here is what the structure of laminin looks like...AND THIS IS NOT a 'Christian portrayal' of it....if you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece of literature, this is what you will see...
[Link: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...]
This definition of laminins is from
[Link: www.fasebj.org...]
'Globular and rodlike domains are arranged in an extended four-armed, cruciform shape..'

Now tell me that our God is not the coolest! Amazing.
The glue that holds us together....ALL of us....is in the shape of the cross.
Immediately Colossians 1:15-17 comes to mind.

'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth , visible and invisible,whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;
all things were created by him and for him.
He is before all things,
and in him all things HOLD TOGETHER. '
Colossians 1:15-17

Call me crazy. I just think that is very, very, very cool.
Thousands of years before the world knew anything about laminin, Paul penned those words. And now we see that from a very LITERAL standpoint, we are held together...one cell to another....by the cross.

You would never in a quadrillion years convince me that is anything other than the mark of a Creator who knew EXACTLY what laminin 'glue' would look like long before Adam breathed his first breath!

I find creation most fascinating and if some want to discovery and wade into the nature of its complexity and propose answers for it that's cool. And if they find objection to God then that is cool as well. They don't have to answer to me, and that is most cool. They must answer to the Creator and for them who deny Him that is most uncool.

Oh well - Rockets

I have little use for militant atheists, despite being a very skeptical agnostic/atheist. Don't know how to categorize myself. Anyway, I don't deny him, and I think there are compelling arguments out there for a "first cause", I'm just not sure that this first cause resembles in anyway the stories of our religious lore. Anyway, I'll trust in his forgiveness.

Great that this should take place on this Day. And I think, because it is still Memorial Day this would be appropriate:

“Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you.
I remember some time ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving to all. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it over his heart.... REMEMBER? And you, I remember you too. Standing there straight as a soldier. You didn’t have a hat but, you were giving me the right salute. Remember your little sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you, with her right hand over her heart.... REMEMBER..?
WHAT HAPPENED? I’m still the same OLD FLAG. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a young boy. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago.
But now I don’t feel as proud as I used to.
When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets and I may get a small glance, then you look away. I see the children running around and shouting... They don’t see to know who I am.... I saw one man take off his hat and then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with theirs off, so he quickly put his back on. Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I have been... Anzio, Guadalcanal, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf.
Take a look at the Memorial Honor Rolls sometime, of those who never came back, to keep this republic free.... FOR FREEDOM IS NOT FREE... One Nation Under God... When you salute me, you are actually saluting them. Well, it wont be long until I’ll be coming down your street again. So, when you see me, stand straight, place your hand over your heart.... And I’ll salute you, by waving back... And I’ll know that... YOU REMEMBERED!
Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but what ever they call me, I am your Flag, the Flag of the United States of America.

--Author Unknown

Mmm... I've never really seen the UN feel urgency beyond a strongly worded letter, except when it's too late (hello, Rwanda!).

But -- and this is a big but -- a report like this one will make it mighty hard to condemn Israel and/or America when they drop a big booger on Iran's facilities. So the report is, at least indirectly, a big deal, and I'm sure the Iranians are concocting a nasty denial in reaction as we speak.

OT: TOS Director Joseph Pevney Dies at 96

[Link: trekmovie.com...]

The director of numerous episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series,
including “The City on the Edge of Forever,” died this week. According to his Desert Sun obituary, Joseph Pevney died peacefully in his home in Palm Desert, California, surrounded by his wife and family members. He was 96 years old.

* Of the religious scientists, however, 15 percent identified themselves as Jewish compared to 2 percent of the religious general population.
* 14 percent of the general population described themselves as "evangelical" or "fundamentalist.” Less than 2 percent of scientists, however, identified themselves as either of these.

Larry Niven was one of the best SF authors ever. "The Mote in God's Eye" was a great collaboration with Pournelle. I also recommend "RingWorld", "The RingWorld Engineers" and "Protector" (Phssthpok the Pak), in that order.

Still is.

RingWorld will someday (?!) be a huge movie.

About a dozen of the Niven and Niven/Pournelle books will be great movies. WTF is Hollyweird waiting for?

Ever read his Warlock stuff, "The Magic Goes Away"?!?!

Mars Science Laboratory will use a radioisotope power system to generate electricity needed to operate the rover and its instruments. Radioisotope electrical power and heating systems enable science missions that require greater longevity, more diverse landing locations or more power or heat than missions limited to solar power systems.

Radioisotope power systems are generators that produce electricity from the natural decay of plutonium-238, which is a non-weapons-grade form of that radioisotope used in power systems for NASA spacecraft. Heat given off by the natural decay of this isotope is converted into electricity, providing constant power during all seasons and through the day and night.

Barack Obama must be the most gaffe-prone politician in memory. Today, he delivered a Memorial Day speech in New Mexico. After greeting the local Democratic Party dignitaries, he began:

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

Memorial Day honors those who have died in our nation's military service. Is it possible that Obama does not know this? Sometimes the things that come out of his mouth defy understanding.

John McCain, while criticizing Barry, invites him to visit the war zone with him. Now that's some sharp politicking on McCain's part. No matter how Barry responds he loses.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Republican John McCain on Monday sharply criticized Democratic rival Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, and said they should visit the war zone together.

"Look at what happened in the last two years since Senator Obama visited and declared the war lost," the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting told The Associated Press in an interview, noting that the Illinois senator's last trip to Iraq came before the military buildup that is credited with curbing violence.

"He really has no experience or knowledge or judgment about the issue of Iraq and he has wanted to surrender for a long time," the Arizona senator added. "If there was any other issue before the American people, and you hadn't had anything to do with it in a couple of years, I think the American people would judge that very harshly."

Providing truth is paramount, even though it has not yet been proven by those who measure things empirically.

Why is that? Don't they have enough by now or will it take more years to study creation?

Those who measure the world are lost within it and see it like a box, while we who know the truth of the matter see it as a box created by someone who knows how to make more than a box.

Let them grapple with the miracle they see around them and come to a conclusion that design is something to be debated.

The movie was good, but when you show up at this type of movie the expectations are higher. I did think that there was about 66% too much comedy relief...and that Indy was too often providing it. The bit with him was that once or twice in a whole movie you would see him do something funny, or express his surprise or fear. Seemed like it was happening every five minutes in this one. Kind of dented the image we are used to.

I think when the martians say "We will destroy your world", you should take them seriously...I see a demand for a view of Venus much like the Sudetenland in the 1930s: an opportunity to stop tyranny.

I hate when they dumb down the hero.

Agree. I can buy that after 20 some years and a World War, that Indiana Jones has changed...who wouldn't be different? Still, he is a hero...not a regular person like you or I, and when he acts, well, human, it doesn't work as well.

Problem is that we all have in our minds a picture of what he is supposed to be...and that will never, likely, change. It makes the movie harder to like.

Then again, maybe I am just too bitter.

re: #471 newsjunkie_ky

I saw on the news that the St. Petersburg group are really pissed about the movie and the portrayal of the commies and have advised the cast not to come to St. Petersburg anytime soon.

I saw that too.

Problem is that the ones complaining consist of about 9 guys in someone's basement still pretending, like in some fantasy role-playing game, that the Soviet Union still exists, that communism works, and that America is the enemy; 0-3 on that score. They make speeches, they march, they even write Putin nasty notes which they send along with a box of Swiss chocolates. They aren't the problem.

Problem is the guys you don't hear from that are working on perfecting fertilizer bombs because some Russian tank leveled their house in Grozny or some other beef.

Another disclaimer: I like RPG, but the bit is right on.

It would be a good thing to set that portion of the record straight.

I do not like "almost exact quotes." They leave so much room for "interpretation" - which strikes me as a synonym for "twisting."

It's in the link, but I think they're investigating water ice and possible life; they think they're more likely to find it at the pole.

I got that part, I'm just curious what season they landed. I heard the principal investigator make the comment that they would like to go beyond the 90 day mission, but that winter would be a real problem since there would be no sunlight for the solar cells and the electronics would be cold soaked. Just curious how far from winter they are.

This would take some brainstorming...and I don't know that I can do justice to the task you have set before me. Still, I think to distinguish between "cougars" and "something after cougars" defeats the purpose of the term "cougar". As far as I am concerned, once a cougar, always a cougar.

And if you get lit up, put on tight jeans and look good, don't ask me to not look. Twice.

Maybe three times...but not more than four, that would be creepy.

It was about Man O' War, by Marguerite Henry.........a famous horse of the 1920's that, btw, traces it's bloodline back to the beginning of the Thoroughbreds: an Arabian colt given as a gift by a Mohammedan Sultan in Morocco, in the early 1700's to the boy king of France.....

(And.....it was quite interesting to learn, the reason for the gift was a hope that France therefore would ignore the extreme bloodiness of the Sultan's rule.....)

Oddly enough, it is the equivalent of Late May in the Martian northern hemisphere, about 75% of the way from their Spring equinox to their Summer solstice. Weird, huh?

Since their seasons are twice as long as ours, Martian northern winter is about an Earth year away.

Let me explain again what Joe Citizen got all wrong, even though when I explained it before was very clear. (He is looking for a fight and chose the wrong corner). He thinks this attitude is similar to terrorists who will kill others to advance Islam. Death in this scope is a means to an end, but it is not what I suggested, although Joe Citizen thinks no better of them than me and jackets those who think like me no better than Stan worshipers. Ask him and he'll say yes. At least before this post.

As a follower of Yeshua I am aware that if it comes to giving my life for others I have in the sacrifice of Yeshua a prime example of what it takes to accept death and its delivery. If it comes to that, and in my case as a servant it very may well be my end - no it will be, I look forward to following in Yeshua's death.

I'm sure Issac would disagree as his head was trust up on the stone as Abraham cocked his arm back with blade in hand, but that is another matter entirely.

I'm so sorry to hear that.

642 Steffan  Mon, May 26, 2008 9:57:25pm

As usual, Thomas Sowell hits one out of the park:

Mascot Politics

William F. Buckley's wife once mentioned in passing, at dinner in her home, that she had been involved for years in working with a school in Harlem. But I never heard her or Bill Buckley ever say that publicly.

Nor do conservatives who were in the civil rights marches in the South, back when that was dangerous, make that a big deal.

For people on the left, however, blacks are trophies or mascots, and must therefore be put on display. Nowhere is that more true than in politics.

The problem with being a mascot is that you are a symbol of someone else's significance or virtue. The actual well-being of a mascot is not the point.

Liberals all across the country have not hesitated to destroy black neighborhoods in the name of "urban renewal," often replacing working-class neighborhoods with upscale homes and pricey businesses-- neither of which the former residents can afford.

In academia, lower admissions standards for black students is about having them as a visible presence, even if mismatching them with the particular college or university produces high dropout rates.

The black students who don't make it are replaced by others, and when many of them don't make it, there are still more others.

The point is to have black faces on campus, as mascots symbolizing what great people there are running the college or university.

It gets better:

A study by Professor Richard Sander of the UCLA law school suggests that there may be fewer black lawyers as a result of "affirmative action" admissions to law schools that are a mismatch for the individuals admitted.

Let's hear it for "diversity."

Ugh. Ignoring the pointless religious firestorm that's erupting around this thread, I might as well dissent on a different common consensus on the blog, and galvanize everyone else against me:

Overall, this lander was a waste of money.

Understand. I'm a guy who likes to see money spent on practical things, or research that has an application in the next ten or twenty years. And I just see no possible application of the information that the probe is meant to gather.

Cool factor? Undeniably immense. Practicality? Low. What're we doing up there? Checking out Mars' geology? Weak sauce. Investigating the possibility of extraterrestrial life maybe? Lame. If this actually contributed to the preparations of a manned Mars landing, it would be less of a waste. You know, the whole "HAHA US ASTRONAUT ON MARS" facotr. (Liberal: "Imperialistic neo-con devil!") Unfortunately, its not.

I'd rather see this money go to a "Lunar Prospecting" kind of thing. A mission checking to see exactly how easy it would be to harvest Helium-3 ([Link: en.wikipedia.org...] from the Moon's soil, and to figure out how we could make harvesting it cost effective. That would advance the possibility of effective, sustainable nuclear fusion, which would get us one step closer to actually harnessing the power of the Stars.

Research on Mars gives us no prestige, or tangible benefits. The only guys that care are the NASA and ESA guys. Most Europeans are probably shrugging at the news, and going back to anti-american seething, the Russians and Chinese are laughing at us for wasting our money, and Ahmehamehamajad is still stuck on the Aristotle-style, the-planets-are-perfect-spheres-and-the-sun-orbits -the-Earth view of the universe and thinks that we're lying. All its doing for us is inspiring a little bit of patriotic pride and a pointless fight over religion.

Oops... Kinda rambled there.

Tax-payer cash should go to crap that'll benefit the nation, and help it out. Knowing the exact composition of a particular patch of the Martian poles, won't. Life on Mars? Probably spark a religious war, and that's about it.

Helium-3 and Nuclear Fusion? Super-efficient power, AND bragging rights. Also the possible military application of a "Moon Base", so to speak. Big benefit.

Still, it is pretty cool, though.

Moon lasers would be cooler. Pewpew. Eat invisible light doom, jihadi.

Surface gravity of Europa is about 40% of that of Mars. Certainly less, but in a much nastier neighborhood, and most of the way down a much deeper gravity well. The jury is still out regarding the presence of water ice at the lunar south pole.

What's this "cougar" stuff?

My husband's 7 years younger (but 10 years old-fogier!) than me.

It started with a "there are two kinds of people in this world...those that like Neil Diamond, and those who don't" post, then I mentioned that while I didn't like ND all that much there was major entertainment (and eye candy) appeal going to the concert seeing "cougars" lit up, wearing tight jeans...I did insert a well-natured remark or two to stir the pot...and it was moved and seconded that it is a good thing for women over the age of, say 30, to have a little less stigma related to "wolfing" after younger men.

That pretty much gets you up to speed.

Spectre was the follow-on to Puff. Cannon plus multiple chain guns, radar aided targeting. Not something you want to be on the wrong side of. Talked to a Guard guy who was a navigator in one, their comment was, "you can run, but you'll just die tired"

Lizards who are upset about Charles' discussion of science are taking it out on the atheists under the delusion that LGF will turn into a Christian right wing blog after the godless Lizards have been purged. They don't have the balls to challenge Charles so they're attacking lizards who believe in science.

That AC-130 bears a strong resemblance to what we used to call "Puff" (as in Puff the Magic Dragon) which was, iirc, a C-130 armed with mini-guns or 35mm cannons and was said to be able to put one big round (20 or 35mm) in each square foot of a football field in one five second "burst".
Badass Mofo's, for sure!

It ruins the sleep cycle, once that is understood the need to jump off a tall building subsides.

Seriously though, it does ruin the sleep cycle. Add that to the attempt to quit an addictive drug as well as break a habit and you have the possibility of serious psychotic reactions. I stopped taking it after a month, some need more time, others less, but it works.

The dreams were nuts, and like I said, the sleep was tough. It was the lack of sleep that made me stop taking the drug, but by then I had set the cigarettes down for good. I know quitting is a personal thing and that no drug is going to force one to quit, but this one worked for me.

I also would not recommend it to anyone that needs to remain on a sleep schedule or has a history of mental issues (is that a good term?). Quitting is important, living is more important.

Really folks, be comfortable in your faith and Trout will mean nothing to you than just a fish to be caught in a stream or upper Sierra lake.

Golden trout are awesome to behold once caught.

re: #735 Dianna

How does a 50 year old female (who certainly doesn't look it - no surgery or anything, just healthy and good skin) with a 38-year-old man (who doesn't look it - lots of gray and rather lined) play out? These were fellow guests at a party, and I didn't know either of their ages prior to them telling me. I was a bit surprised, myself; I actually thought them to be the same age.

OMG! I am a COSMO columnist...AAAAAHHHHHHH!

Dear Dianna:

That might be a close call. Cougar-dom is a multi-dimensional continum. Without seeing the couple interact and learning some facts about them, it would be hard to make a solid call either way. Clearly, one factor is age difference, but there are a whole host of other factors as well.

Honestly, it is hard to tell, but part of making the determination depends on how elsatic your definition of "cougar" might be, and whether it is necessarily a prejoritive term (personally I don't think it has to be, can be, but not always).

So, in the end, assume nothing, act courteously and as long as the older woman of the couple isn't hunting down for the sole purpose of sexual conquest someone you know and care for, don't worry.

Lizards who are upset about Charles' discussion of science are taking it out on the atheists under the delusion that LGF will turn into a Christian right wing blog after the godless Lizards have been purged. They don't have the balls to challenge Charles so they're attacking lizards who believe in science.

Seriously though, it does ruin the sleep cycle. Add that to the attempt to quit an addictive drug as well as break a habit and you have the possibility of serious psychotic reactions. I stopped taking it after a month, some need more time, others less, but it works.

Science!

Hear! Hear!

Science works.

I remember visiting an aura-reading class at the University of North Texas back in the 90s, taught by an earth-mother type complete with Gypsy bangles and other magickal acoutrements. Most of the students were nurses or teachers. I was interested in why this was being taught at a public facility. I was so struck by the instructor's answer that I wrote it down word for word: "Intuition and sympathetic magic are part of a nurturing, life-centered worldview that is just as valid as all this male science of yours."
I told her ok, we would both fly to Chicago. I would get on a plane designed by life-hating male hegemonist engineers and scientists and she could get on one designed by a committee of witch-doctors. We would see who got there safely. (I forebore to suggest that she just saddle up her broom for the trip).
She declared that I had an evil aura.

Some time before that I had briefly dated a most attractive woman who was quite taken with the whole new-age business (and it is a business). Fairly early on, she asked me offhandedly where and when I had been born. I told her Salisbury, England, on June 21st 1949. She nearly went crazy pointing out that I had been born within sight of Stonehenge (8 miles) on midsummer's day. I must therefore be blessed with awesome paranormal powers. She was crushed to learn that I was a rationalist and a skeptic and did not believe in such things. The relationship didn't last long.

This may be an obvious interjection but why does it always have to be "either/or" science or God. Let's suppose there is a God. Couldn't He have given us science, and the scientific method, and a logical, analytical brain by which to deduce fact from fiction? I find scientists, who live and die by the scientific method, to be very spiritual people because they know that with each new discovery they uncover a thousand more mysteries. It's the wonder, the unknown that they seek, and explaining things often leads them closer to deeper mysteries (read "God") than farther away.

Yeah! He made everything from Man all the way down to Bacteria.

And on the seventh day he rested, and some intern in the creation department played with the creation toy and managed to create a life form that is not quite a lifeform on its own but needs one of Gods creations to replicate.

This makes me very sad. The recent debates must make the discovery institute smile- because it has played into their hands. The recent debate has not been about God vs. No God- it's been about teaching science in the science classrooms vs. teaching non-science. I don't know what so hard to understand about that, but here you have it. I for one don't want any child of mine being given a second rate education- I want them to be taught science, and I'll take care of the matter of educating their souls.

(I really wouldn't want a government school teaching any child of mine about their soul anyways.....)

I enjoy theology debates- I find them fascinating. But this ID in the classroom debate getting distorted to the di's delight is just saddening.

Thanks for the response. One of an infinite number of examples would be the photographs of galaxies from the hubble space telescope that Charles has posted from time to time:
null

An instrument of pure science giving us an image of infinite awe and wonder, like the feeling you get when you are in church. The same can be said for the postings that Charles has made of seascapes or music performances. So I really think this either/or stuff is limiting to the soul, and is missing a larger opportunity.

So heretics, in other words...

Uhhh....I'm not positive that there is a God either. I've always said that I'm agnostic in that way. But I don't deny that there is a God either.

But I don't go out of my way to prove that there is no God, and try and use science as my tool to make that assertion - like some people here are doing. That makes absolutely no sense to me.

846 Modgi  Mon, May 26, 2008 11:38:08pm

I love the debate but really don't see how any side can win. I, for one believe God made all and Jesus is who he said he is. That said, the answer can't be known until it is too late to claim victory. just my opinion.

I've come back to add this-

We've all been celebrating the glories of American Science on this thread.

If we allow our science curriculum to be corrupted- you can kiss space exploration, as well as a host of other American scientific achievements, good-bye. I'm not willing to do that.

So again, Lizards- good night.

re: #832 Sharmuta

I agree it's sad. It does play into the hands of those who falsely claim that teaching evolution is the same thing as teaching atheism, and that disbelief in God is the same as "belief in science."
I agree w/ you and share your concerns about what is taught in science classes in public schools. It is unfortunate that people like KT, who claim to love science, lend their support to the talking points of the DI.

btw, science aside. I know myself as an "organism", a man. I am selfish and my instincts guide me toward self preservation. I also have a profound affinity to accumulate stuff and surround myself with people who love and know me and try to know and understand others. I think this is common. Uncommon is a man like Ross McGinnis, with an obvious way out, to lay down on a grenade for men without a way out. Science can't explain this or any of the countless examples of humans rising above instinct. oorah

I am so tired of the same freakin' "What if" or "how come" questions from people who really don't want an answer, they simply want to count coup and say to their admirers, "Well I guess I showed him . . ."

Listen up, enlightened one -- God didn't then (and never will) need an intern.

Short and simple answer to your (cough) question:

God exists (He do, yes He do)
God said that in the beginning it was all good (and He did) until . . .
Stan entered the picture and messed up what was all good (and he did)

Since then, yucky stuff (ie, viruses, rashes, skeeters and flies) has been happening at an ever increasing rate

My belief in this in no way precludes my being overwhelmed with wonder as I look at the Unive
