Mars Photo of the Day

Mon, May 26, 2008 at 6:55:52 pm PDT

How cool is this? A satellite orbiting Mars actually got a photo of the Phoenix probe parachuting down to the surface.

PASADENA, California (Reuters) - A sharp-eyed Mars orbiter snapped an image of sister probe Phoenix descending through Martian skies toward a polar landing site to search for water and assess conditions for life, mission managers said on Monday.

Phoenix touched down at 4:53 p.m. PDT (7:53 p.m. EDT/2353 GMT) on Sunday, becoming the first spacecraft to reach a polar region of Mars. Problems during descent doomed NASA’s first polar lander in 1999.

The unprecedented image, taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter as a result of careful planning and good luck, shows the small probe dangling beneath its parachute.

The original Mars Polar Lander crashed. This is a replacement, using instruments for another mission that was canceled while they figured out why the first one crashed. So it rose from the ashes of two earlier missions.

A couple of days ago I (a doctor) was running on my treadmill, watching a DVD by Louie Giglio...and I was BLOWN AWAY!

He (Louie) was talking about how our universe creating God ALSO knitted our human bodies together with amazing detail and wonder. At this point I am LOVING it (fascinating from a medical standpoint, you know.) .....and I was remembering how I was constantly amazed during medical school as I learned more and more about God's handiwork. I remember so many times thinking....'How can ANYONE deny that a Creator did all of this?'

Louie went on to talk about how we can trust that the God who created all this, also has the power to hold it all together when things seem to be falling apart...how our loving Creator is also our sustainer.

And then I lost my breath. And it wasn't because I was running my treadmill, either!
It was because he started talking about laminin. I knew about laminin. Here is how wikipedia describes them :'Laminins are a family of proteins that are an integral part of the structural scaffolding of basement membranes in almost every animal tissue.' You see....laminins are what hold us together....LITERALLY. They are cell adhesion molecules. They are what holds one cell of our bodies to the next cell. Without them, we would literally fall apart. And I knew all this already. But what I didn't know is what laminin LOOKED LIKE.

But now I do. And I have thought about it a thousand times since (already)....
Here is what the structure of laminin looks like...AND THIS IS NOT a 'Christian portrayal' of it....if you look up laminin in any scientific/medical piece of literature, this is what you will see...
[Link: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...]
This definition of laminins is from
[Link: www.fasebj.org...]
'Globular and rodlike domains are arranged in an extended four-armed, cruciform shape..'

Now tell me that our God is not the coolest! Amazing.
The glue that holds us together....ALL of us....is in the shape of the cross.
Immediately Colossians 1:15-17 comes to mind.

'He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
For by him all things were created; things in heaven and on earth , visible and invisible,whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities;
all things were created by him and for him.
He is before all things,
and in him all things HOLD TOGETHER. '
Colossians 1:15-17

Call me crazy. I just think that is very, very, very cool.
Thousands of years before the world knew anything about laminin, Paul penned those words. And now we see that from a very LITERAL standpoint, we are held together...one cell to another....by the cross.

You would never in a quadrillion years convince me that is anything other than the mark of a Creator who knew EXACTLY what laminin 'glue' would look like long before Adam breathed his first breath!

I find creation most fascinating and if some want to discovery and wade into the nature of its complexity and propose answers for it that's cool. And if they find objection to God then that is cool as well. They don't have to answer to me, and that is most cool. They must answer to the Creator and for them who deny Him that is most uncool.

Oh well - Rockets

I have little use for militant atheists, despite being a very skeptical agnostic/atheist. Don't know how to categorize myself. Anyway, I don't deny him, and I think there are compelling arguments out there for a "first cause", I'm just not sure that this first cause resembles in anyway the stories of our religious lore. Anyway, I'll trust in his forgiveness.

Great that this should take place on this Day. And I think, because it is still Memorial Day this would be appropriate:

“Something has been bothering me, so I thought I might talk it over with you.
I remember some time ago people lined up on both sides of the street to watch the parade and naturally, I was leading every parade, proudly waving to all. When your daddy saw me coming, he immediately removed his hat and placed it over his heart.... REMEMBER? And you, I remember you too. Standing there straight as a soldier. You didn’t have a hat but, you were giving me the right salute. Remember your little sister? Not to be outdone, she was saluting the same as you, with her right hand over her heart.... REMEMBER..?
WHAT HAPPENED? I’m still the same OLD FLAG. Oh, I have a few more stars since you were a young boy. A lot more blood has been shed since those parades of long ago.
But now I don’t feel as proud as I used to.
When I come down your street, you just stand there with your hands in your pockets and I may get a small glance, then you look away. I see the children running around and shouting... They don’t see to know who I am.... I saw one man take off his hat and then look around. He didn’t see anybody else with theirs off, so he quickly put his back on. Is it a sin to be patriotic anymore? Have you forgotten what I stand for and where I have been... Anzio, Guadalcanal, Korea, Vietnam, and the Persian Gulf.
Take a look at the Memorial Honor Rolls sometime, of those who never came back, to keep this republic free.... FOR FREEDOM IS NOT FREE... One Nation Under God... When you salute me, you are actually saluting them. Well, it wont be long until I’ll be coming down your street again. So, when you see me, stand straight, place your hand over your heart.... And I’ll salute you, by waving back... And I’ll know that... YOU REMEMBERED!
Some people call me Old Glory, others call me the Star Spangled Banner, but what ever they call me, I am your Flag, the Flag of the United States of America.

--Author Unknown

Mmm... I've never really seen the UN feel urgency beyond a strongly worded letter, except when it's too late (hello, Rwanda!).

But -- and this is a big but -- a report like this one will make it mighty hard to condemn Israel and/or America when they drop a big booger on Iran's facilities. So the report is, at least indirectly, a big deal, and I'm sure the Iranians are concocting a nasty denial in reaction as we speak.

OT: TOS Director Joseph Pevney Dies at 96

[Link: trekmovie.com...]

The director of numerous episodes of Star Trek: The Original Series,
including “The City on the Edge of Forever,” died this week. According to his Desert Sun obituary, Joseph Pevney died peacefully in his home in Palm Desert, California, surrounded by his wife and family members. He was 96 years old.

* Of the religious scientists, however, 15 percent identified themselves as Jewish compared to 2 percent of the religious general population.
* 14 percent of the general population described themselves as "evangelical" or "fundamentalist.” Less than 2 percent of scientists, however, identified themselves as either of these.

Larry Niven was one of the best SF authors ever. "The Mote in God's Eye" was a great collaboration with Pournelle. I also recommend "RingWorld", "The RingWorld Engineers" and "Protector" (Phssthpok the Pak), in that order.

Still is.

RingWorld will someday (?!) be a huge movie.

About a dozen of the Niven and Niven/Pournelle books will be great movies. WTF is Hollyweird waiting for?

Ever read his Warlock stuff, "The Magic Goes Away"?!?!

Mars Science Laboratory will use a radioisotope power system to generate electricity needed to operate the rover and its instruments. Radioisotope electrical power and heating systems enable science missions that require greater longevity, more diverse landing locations or more power or heat than missions limited to solar power systems.

Radioisotope power systems are generators that produce electricity from the natural decay of plutonium-238, which is a non-weapons-grade form of that radioisotope used in power systems for NASA spacecraft. Heat given off by the natural decay of this isotope is converted into electricity, providing constant power during all seasons and through the day and night.

Barack Obama must be the most gaffe-prone politician in memory. Today, he delivered a Memorial Day speech in New Mexico. After greeting the local Democratic Party dignitaries, he began:

On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong.

Memorial Day honors those who have died in our nation's military service. Is it possible that Obama does not know this? Sometimes the things that come out of his mouth defy understanding.

John McCain, while criticizing Barry, invites him to visit the war zone with him. Now that's some sharp politicking on McCain's part. No matter how Barry responds he loses.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Republican John McCain on Monday sharply criticized Democratic rival Barack Obama for not having been to Iraq since 2006, and said they should visit the war zone together.

"Look at what happened in the last two years since Senator Obama visited and declared the war lost," the GOP presidential nominee-in-waiting told The Associated Press in an interview, noting that the Illinois senator's last trip to Iraq came before the military buildup that is credited with curbing violence.

"He really has no experience or knowledge or judgment about the issue of Iraq and he has wanted to surrender for a long time," the Arizona senator added. "If there was any other issue before the American people, and you hadn't had anything to do with it in a couple of years, I think the American people would judge that very harshly."

Providing truth is paramount, even though it has not yet been proven by those who measure things empirically.

Why is that? Don't they have enough by now or will it take more years to study creation?

Those who measure the world are lost within it and see it like a box, while we who know the truth of the matter see it as a box created by someone who knows how to make more than a box.

Let them grapple with the miracle they see around them and come to a conclusion that design is something to be debated.

The movie was good, but when you show up at this type of movie the expectations are higher. I did think that there was about 66% too much comedy relief...and that Indy was too often providing it. The bit with him was that once or twice in a whole movie you would see him do something funny, or express his surprise or fear. Seemed like it was happening every five minutes in this one. Kind of dented the image we are used to.

What if the Martians still want a clear view of Venus?

I think when the martians say "We will destroy your world", you should take them seriously...I see a demand for a view of Venus much like the Sudetenland in the 1930s: an opportunity to stop tyranny.

I hate when they dumb down the hero.

Agree. I can buy that after 20 some years and a World War, that Indiana Jones has changed...who wouldn't be different? Still, he is a hero...not a regular person like you or I, and when he acts, well, human, it doesn't work as well.

Problem is that we all have in our minds a picture of what he is supposed to be...and that will never, likely, change. It makes the movie harder to like.

Then again, maybe I am just too bitter.

One of my good friends got back from fishing today. He was going to his usual fishing spot at a bridge with his boat and he was stuck in back of an entourage of black SUV's.

Dick Cheney and his 40+ secret service men were in front getting the boats out. Some were in the bushes on the side of the river etc.

That's really cool. Although it almost looks like a black-and-white photo of a coniferous forest they're descending onto. Halliburton's super-top-secret-Martian-strip mine operations must still be working their way over to that side of the planet.

I'm going to point you to the problem that jumps up and down, waving bright semaphore flags at the words, "almost an exact quote". SADM has - on occasion - expressed his conviction that he will meet his savior with joy. He's never once - that I have read - expressed a desire to die. Or said he can't wait to die.

I can't really comment on the movie outcomes without spoiling it for someone, but there are a few digs against America in the 1950s that are predictable...still when one sees the movie, you get the sense that there is a reason to be very afraid--not of the U.S. Government, but of the Russkies.
