Guardian Columnist to 'Arrest' John Bolton?

Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:32:30 am PDT

British über-moonbat “journalist” George Monbiot is apparently going to attempt a citizen’s arrest of John Bolton, after he speaks at a UK literary festival.

George Monbiot, the journalist and activist, is planning the action because he believes Mr Bolton is a “war criminal”.

He said he was surprised that Mr Bolton would be allowed to “swim through the politest of polite soirees – which is of course Hay.”

Mr Bolton, who was the American ambassador to the UN from August 2005 to January 2006, is due to talk at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival at 6.30pm on international relations.

Mr Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian newspaper, plans to detain him as he steps off stage at the end of his talk. He said he was prepared to jump on stage and perform the citizen’s arrest there if necessary.

He claimed Mr Bolton was “instrumental in preparing and initiating the Iraq war by disseminating false claims through the State Department” while he was under-secretary of state for arms control.

Mr Monbiot, who took part in a debate at Hay on Saturday entitled “Defeat: Why They Lost Iraq”, has been a fierce critic of the decision to launch the 2003 invasion. He said he had formally notified police of his intention of performing a citizen’s arrest.

If Monbiot pulls something like this, and tries to physically detain Bolton, he’ll be very lucky if he doesn’t get clocked. Will the British police actually stand by and watch this happen?

Funny how the left, which always advocates "diplomacy" advocates violence against their political enemies.

Doubly ironic here because Bolton actually *IS* a diplomat (or a former one).

That's one proposed etymology for the term, actually.

In the absence of any sort if international arrest warrant, Monbiot's plan to detain Bolton would be a criminal offence. I sincerely hope that Bolton fills the pillock in good and proper.

Give us the precedent to begin citizen arresting all the real criminals involved with this war: Valerie Plame, Joe Wilson, John Murtha, Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Ron Paul, Obama, Clinton, Durbin, Schumer, basically every elected Democrat, Cindy Sheehan, Code Pink, MoveOn.org, Kos himself, the list just goes on and on.

I think that sums up the likely outcome here.

Citizen's Arrest from Wikipedia:

England and Wales

A citizen's arrest (officially called an "any person arrest") is permitted to be made on any person under section 24A of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (as amended by the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005) for an indictable offence (in this section referred to simply as "an offence"). This includes either way offences. It is thus permissible for any person to arrest:

* Anyone who is without doubt in the act of committing an offence, or whom the arrestor has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be in the act of committing an offence

* Where an offence has been committed without doubt.., anyone who is without doubt guilty of that offence or whom the arrestor has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be guilty of it

In order for the arrest to be lawful, the following two conditions must also be satisfied:

* It is not reasonably practicable for a constable to make the arrest instead
* The arrestor has reasonable grounds for believing that the arrest is necessary to prevent one of the following:
o The person causing physical injury to himself or others
o The person suffering physical injury
o The person causing loss of or damage to property
o The person absconding before a constable can assume responsibility for him

Use of the second power above is rather risky, since it relies upon the person carrying out the arrest knowing that an indictable or either way offence has been committed. If, for example, the arrested person is later acquitted in court then it could be concluded that no offence has been committed; thus the arrest would be unlawful. The Act therefore gives a constable three additional powers, to arrest:

* Anyone who is (without doubt) about to commit an offence, or whom the constable has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be about to commit an offence
* Anyone whom the constable has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be guilty of an offence which is merely suspected to have taken place

A constable's arrest power is not limited to indictable offences, and conditions different from the above apply.

In addition to the above, a private person may be authorised to execute an arrest warrant, if the court issuing the warrant has given them the authority to do so, and any person may arrest someone who is "unlawfully at large" (for example, an escaped prisoner).

Does he plan on a citizens' prosecution too? The "crimes" Monbiot accuses Bolton of are vague and no judge would allow it in their court. That usually doesn't stop some folks though - crimes are what they say they are. Only those of true moral purity like Monbiot can judge good and evil apparently.

And I suppose John Bolton was responsible for 300+ mass graves filled with pregnant women, mother and their babes in arms, many buried alive. How about the 5000 Kurds who died in one day when they were gassed - why bother with cyanide showers when cyanide works great outdoors?

History will remember John Bolton, it will not remember this twerp- wanna-be.

Sucks to be him.

"If Monbiot pulls something like this, and actually tries to physically detain Bolton, he’ll be very lucky if he doesn’t get clocked."

Monboit, please do it. Please do it, please do it, please do it, please do it, please do it, please do it, please do it!

Following incident in the UK, John McCain is asked what he thinks about John Bolton and how he defended himself. Mr. McCain stated: "When I'm President, Mr. Bolton will be in my cabinet."

Don't hold your breath.

I wonder if Bolton would respond by a citizen's knee in the groin.

I think a citizen's HAYmaker would be more appropriate.

What the hell is chai, any way?

Indian tea with all sots of exotic spices thrown in.

It's becoming fairly mainstream in the US over the last 3 years. Haven't you seen "chai-this" and "chai-flavored that" on your supermarket shelves? Even the big corporate food conglomerates have jumped on the chaiwagon.

No offense, but where have you been?

No offense taken. It was more a rhetorical question. I was a communications major who used to work in broadcasting many lives ago.
