Guardian Columnist to 'Arrest' John Bolton?

Wed, May 28, 2008 at 10:32:30 am PDT

British über-moonbat “journalist” George Monbiot is apparently going to attempt a citizen’s arrest of John Bolton, after he speaks at a UK literary festival.

George Monbiot, the journalist and activist, is planning the action because he believes Mr Bolton is a “war criminal”.

He said he was surprised that Mr Bolton would be allowed to “swim through the politest of polite soirees – which is of course Hay.”

Mr Bolton, who was the American ambassador to the UN from August 2005 to January 2006, is due to talk at the Hay-on-Wye literary festival at 6.30pm on international relations.

Mr Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian newspaper, plans to detain him as he steps off stage at the end of his talk. He said he was prepared to jump on stage and perform the citizen’s arrest there if necessary.

He claimed Mr Bolton was “instrumental in preparing and initiating the Iraq war by disseminating false claims through the State Department” while he was under-secretary of state for arms control.

Mr Monbiot, who took part in a debate at Hay on Saturday entitled “Defeat: Why They Lost Iraq”, has been a fierce critic of the decision to launch the 2003 invasion. He said he had formally notified police of his intention of performing a citizen’s arrest.

If Monbiot pulls something like this, and tries to physically detain Bolton, he’ll be very lucky if he doesn’t get clocked. Will the British police actually stand by and watch this happen?

I can seriously see Mr. Bolton resisting a citizens arrest. He's not exactly a shrinking violet.

Funny how the left, which always advocates "diplomacy" advocates violence against their political enemies.

Doubly ironic here because Bolton actually *IS* a diplomat (or a former one).

Useless tucking fool, can you back that up? No! Statements made on the best available information at the time, when events and evidence later prove them to be incorrect, are not false at the time they were made.

That's one proposed etymology for the term, actually.

If I were Bolton, I'd have my bodyguard gently educate Mr. Monbiot on the propriety of public assault.

Yep. The only thing Monbiot is capable of arresting is his own development.

16 blueboy  Wed, May 28, 2008 10:37:56am

In the absence of any sort if international arrest warrant, Monbiot's plan to detain Bolton would be a criminal offence. I sincerely hope that Bolton fills the pillock in good and proper.
Guardianistas are (self aggrandising) scum.

Give us the precedent to begin citizen arresting all the real criminals involved with this war: Valerie Plame, Joe Wilson, John Murtha, Harry Reid, Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Ron Paul, Obama, Clinton, Durbin, Schumer, basically every elected Democrat, Cindy Sheehan, Code Pink, MoveOn.org, Kos himself, the list just goes on and on.

Even if the allegations were true as made (which they demonstrably are not), that's still no excuse for some kind of hare-brained "citizen's arrest" of Mr. Bolton.

Which British law did Mr. Bolton violate, and who the heck appointed Mr. Monbiot enforcer?

Well, if Bolton is going to clock this moron, of course. From what I understand, the English abhor violence, and guns and all those things that make American dangerous and scary.

Maybe they will watch the altercation from one of the closed circuit televisions, and ask Bolton to calm down, over the loudspeaker. From far away. Where Bolton can't see or touch them.

I think that sums up the likely outcome here.

Lots of posturing and tough talk from the leftists, but ultimately their cowardice will prevail.

Citizen's Arrest from Wikipedia:

England and Wales

A citizen's arrest (officially called an "any person arrest") is permitted to be made on any person under section 24A of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (as amended by the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005) for an indictable offence (in this section referred to simply as "an offence"). This includes either way offences. It is thus permissible for any person to arrest:

* Anyone who is without doubt in the act of committing an offence, or whom the arrestor has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be in the act of committing an offence

* Where an offence has been committed without doubt.., anyone who is without doubt guilty of that offence or whom the arrestor has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be guilty of it

In order for the arrest to be lawful, the following two conditions must also be satisfied:

* It is not reasonably practicable for a constable to make the arrest instead
* The arrestor has reasonable grounds for believing that the arrest is necessary to prevent one of the following:
o The person causing physical injury to himself or others
o The person suffering physical injury
o The person causing loss of or damage to property
o The person absconding before a constable can assume responsibility for him

Use of the second power above is rather risky, since it relies upon the person carrying out the arrest knowing that an indictable or either way offence has been committed. If, for example, the arrested person is later acquitted in court then it could be concluded that no offence has been committed; thus the arrest would be unlawful. The Act therefore gives a constable three additional powers, to arrest:

* Anyone who is (without doubt) about to commit an offence, or whom the constable has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be about to commit an offence
* Anyone whom the constable has reasonable grounds for suspecting to be guilty of an offence which is merely suspected to have taken place

A constable's arrest power is not limited to indictable offences, and conditions different from the above apply.

In addition to the above, a private person may be authorised to execute an arrest warrant, if the court issuing the warrant has given them the authority to do so, and any person may arrest someone who is "unlawfully at large" (for example, an escaped prisoner).

Mr Monbiot, who took part in a debate at Hay on Saturday entitled “Defeat: Why They Lost Iraq”, has been a fierce critic of the decision to launch the 2003 invasion.

I'm confused. Who's "They" in that title?

Are they seriously stating that the United States has lost the Iraq War? Or what? Because the exact opposite is true: we have already won the war.

It is impossible to even have a conversation with these people because they live in an entirely different "fact-space." A place called Fantasyland.

Does he plan on a citizens' prosecution too? The "crimes" Monbiot accuses Bolton of are vague and no judge would allow it in their court. That usually doesn't stop some folks though - crimes are what they say they are. Only those of true moral purity like Monbiot can judge good and evil apparently.

So I sat down last night and forced myself to watch Lions for Lambs last night. It wasn't actually as big of an anti-war film as they say. Tom Cruise and Robert Redford actually play characters that are able to encapsulate pretty well the thoughts of the American right. Unfortunately, Meryl Streep's character goes off the deep end in the end which leads the whole movie to throw away everything it had been leading up to. So my thoughts are they certainly set everything up pretty well, but as always Hollywood never fails to disappoint.

A McCain loss means an Obama victory.
An Obama victory means:

a. A guarantee of extremely liberal US Supreme Court justice appointments who will contaminate American foreign and domestic policy for decades to come. (The Dem Congressional majority ensures a near walk-though appointment process).

b. Jimmy Carter-like foreign policy that (like his) will have global consequences for decades. Like Carter's utterly failed policy with respect to Iran, Obama's anticipated weakness towards Iran means a high likelihood that Iran will get nukes. . .meaning a bad war later. If Israel intervenes (and that is by no means assured), there will likely be a sooner war; possibly less bad.

John Bolton would kick this guys butt if he came within 100 feet.

Folks -- his name is the source of the word moonbat.

It's not a coincidence.

Courtesy of the LGF Dictionary:

moonbat - An unthinking or insane leftist — in other words, most modern leftists. Moonbat can also be used as an adjective, e.g. a moonbat professor. According to the Wikipedia entry for moonbat, the word was coined in 2002 by the Editor of Samizdata, Perry de Havilland, and was a variation on the name of radical British activist and columnist George Monbiot. Originally, the term “moonbat” was intended to be more politically neutral, and described wackos on the left and the right, but it quickly acquired its current usage of being applied almost exclusively to those on the left. The term also references the moon much in the same way that “lunatic” refers to the insanity-causing powers of the full moon (luna = moon). LGFers occasionally analyze the behavior patterns of various moonbat “species” as if they were actual animals, and even give them satirical Linnaean taxonomical names, such as moonbattus berkeleyensis. According to Charles: “Moonbat was originally coined by Perry at Samizdata, I believe. But LGF probably played a much bigger part in popularizing it.” The entry in the Samizdata glossary indicates that Perry originally coined the full phrase “barking moonbat”; apparently “moonbat” is just a subsequent shortened version of “barking moonbat,” rather than being a pre-existing term that was lengthened to barking moonbat. The term “moonbat” was first used by Charles on Little Green Footballs June 14, 2002.

Since the second thing involves an actual (though hopefully not great) likelihood of a nuclear explosion, its not a trivial thing. Even if McCain and Obama were otherwise identical (and I submit to you that there is a WIDE gulf between them, despite McCain's position slightly to the left of center within the Republican party), that alone would be reason to prefer McCain.

On the first thing, because of the Dem majority I alluded to earlier, McCain is starting off with one hand tied behind his back.

You're absolutely right that McCain is going to have a hard (if not impossible) time getting real Conservatives on the bench.

But you can be damn sure that whatever McCain tries or whomever he picks, that will still be better than Obama, who has ALREADY said (in essence) that he is looking for activist judges, and will have an easy time sliding them into place.

Best tea in the world: PG Tips with a little milk and one lump.

Yummy.

2) Knowing full well the intentions of this RCI sufferer, law enforcement and event staff will make certain he gets no where near the stage, perhaps even refusing him admission.

And then he claims that the Man kept him down, the fascist regime is supporting the war criminal Bolton, yadda yadda yadda. And his chai-drinking fans adore him for it.

(So, if chai is such a big deal, why don't the spellcheckers in LGF or Firefox recognize the word?)

Bolton finishes his speech and exits stage right. Monidiot is of course waiting stage left. He runs around and yells, "citizens' arrest" on put a hand on Bolton's arm. Bolton turns and looks at Monidiot, Monidiot falls to the ground whimpering "don't hurt me."

Gee. Sounds like Che Guevara.

Anyway, I am back and running Firefox. Like it. Page loads are faster and smoother.

From what I understand, the English abhor violence, and guns and all those things that make American dangerous and scary.

What?..... hehehe..... Oh mate, you're giving me a good old belly laugh here. If you think that the English don't like violence or all those guns and toys that the government keeps telling us we're not allowed to have, then I fear your understanding needs to be updated.

Honestly..... Show me the sucker who says they're above violence and prefer instead to follow the higher path of intellectual restraint and I'll show you a victim, every damn time some bugger says 'boo' to 'em :)

In reality it's just petty attention seeking. If he was really going to do that, why advertise the fact beforehand?

My roommate in college broke off a relationship with a guy, who became so upset he punched a window.

Except the whole story is that he announced to everyone that he was going to punch the window, waited for a crowd to gather, wrapped his hand in a shirt, and then punched out the window.

Genuine emotion or attention-seeking, you be the judge.

As for his attack on Bolton, I'll believe it when I see it. As others have pointed out, if he had any intention of actually doing so, he wouldn't have announced it and warned Bolton, his guards, the police, the government, the people in charge of the event, and so forth. It's easy to talk big.

Moonbat is a political epithet popularized in 2002 by Perry de Havilland of Samizdata, a libertarian weblog. Contrary to some speculation, de Havilland has stated it was not originally a play on the last name of George Monbiot, a columnist for The Guardian, regardless of the fact he and Mr. Monbiot have appeared on the BBC together expressing politically opposed views.

212 kuffarharbi  Wed, May 28, 2008 11:29:47am

Actually, Twinings sells a fabulous Indian Chai tea. Much better than the Celestial Seasonings. Also, if you get Mary Twinings' special blend, it is much like the Indian-style chai--they may have even just changed the name, LOL!

I get all my teas from Twinings online. They sell the looseleaf in tins, and it is wonderful.

The Fortnum and Mason's store is on Piccadilly, just a few minutes walk from Piccadilly Circus tube station and it's right opposite the Royal Academy. It's a beautiful building...Georgian I think and has a great food hall and of course superb tea.
