Speaking of A.C.O.R.N. .....when it first came to my neighborhood, 7/06, I read about it in our neighborhood "newspaper", and couldn't get a handle on what it actually stood for......so, I culled the e-mail address of the lady in charge, from the article, and asked her.......after three back-and-forths, I realized she was not intending to get specific, so I invited her to tea, hoping to find out with a face-to-face.....then the thought dropped into my mind, duh! I oughta just do a web search, so I did, and immediately un-invited the lady to tea.......

Lincoln was famously quoted as saying, "If General McClellan does not want to use the army, I would like to borrow it for a time." Despite this, he was the most popular of that army's commanders with its soldiers, who felt that he had their morale and well-being as paramount concerns.

General McClellan also failed to maintain the trust of Lincoln, and proved to be frustratingly insubordinate to the commander-in-chief. After he was relieved of command, McClellan became the unsuccessful Democratic nominee opposing Lincoln in the 1864 presidential election. His party had an anti-war platform, promising to end the war and negotiate with the Confederacy, which McClellan was forced to repudiate, damaging the effectiveness of his campaign. He served as the 24th Governor of New Jersey from 1878 to 1881. He eventually became a writer, defending his actions during the Peninsula Campaign and the Civil War.

Runs in the family, I guess.

Chertoff: Hezbollah Makes Al Qaeda Look 'Minor League'

JERUSALEM — Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff warned Thursday that the radical Islamic group Hezbollah "makes Al Qaeda look like a minor league team," and poses the greatest threat to national security.

"Someone described Hezbollah like the A-team of terrorists in terms of capabilities, in terms of range of weapons they have, in terms of internal discipline," Chertoff told FOX News. "To be honest, they make Al Qaeda look like a minor league team.

No doubt that's true. Here's what he said so you don't need to listen to it:

They pulled the ad? Because of the possibility of misperception? By the right-wing equivalents of jihadists -- the people in this country who most closely share the mentalities of the terrorists. Who act the most like Middle Eastern nutjobs. Who rail against diversity, try to murder dissent, and care more about flags than about people. You know, the Michelle Malkins of the world....How about the rest of us boycott Dunkin' Donuts, for giving in to fascists like Michelle Malkin? And for giving weight to perhaps the most absurd idea the lunatic fringers have ever belched forth: that there are terrorist scarves! Terrorist scarves!

Study finds for centuries Stonehenge was a burial site

WASHINGTON - England’s enigmatic Stonehenge served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings and for several hundred years thereafter, new research indicates.

Dating of cremated remains shows burials took place as early as 3000 B.C., when the first ditches around the monument were being built, researchers said today.

Suicide bomber kills 16 people in northwestern Iraq

A suicide bomber blew himself up Thursday in a crowd of police recruits in northwestern Iraq, killing at least 16 men and wounding 14 others, an official said.

Police closed the recruiting center due to the threat, but a crowd of desperate jobseekers still gathered at the center in Sinjar. Those killed included 14 recruits and two policemen, while 14 other people were wounded, Qassim said.

"We told them that there (was) no more recruiting for security reasons," Qassim said. "But people gathered at recruiting center anyway hoping that some official might register their names."

in other news

a new special interest group was created to counter the gay/lesbian/transgender lobby and to give rights to basically everyone else on the planet not covered by some other special interest group

this new group "PSX" is aiming to get special hate crime treatment for thought crimes and other discrimination against it's practitioners

they have an acronym, like the TV/CD lobby has:

PSX - (calling themselves peeksies) are devotees of plastic sex toys (from dildos to blow up dolls)

they want the right to carry sex toys around at work/public places
much like breast feeding women get to breast feed in public
and like gays get to bash straights (aka breeders) without repercussion) and engage in sex acts in public (at least in SF)
and like blacks get the NAACP, Sharpton and Jackson
to hustle race and demand reparations/shakedowns

also, they want the right to call a sex doll a legitimate passenger to use the carpool lane
and lastly, the coupe de grace - the right to marry said objects
like California recently granted rights to gays to marry

so if you are confronted by some hate-spewing mecha member
whip out your dildo and cry for the hate-crime police to protect you
wield it like a sword but carry it around for "protection"
no CCW permit required as it can't just go off (pun intended) by itself

The death penalty -- the actual carrying out of an execution -- has real value in such situations. Despite what some condemned men claim, they don't want to die that way. The only reason the death penalty has lost deterrent value is that it isn't applied consistently, frequently and quickly enough.

Before 9/11 and the Cole attacks, Hizbullah was always considered the bigger threat - precisely because they were a proxy army for Iran. Their bombing of the Marine barracks in 1983 showed their deadly intent.

It's interesting to see how we've taken down AQ to a degree where we're back to considering Hizbullah the bigger threat - but that may have more to do with Hizbullah's ongoing support by Iran and Syria and the terror masters busy trying to get in a position to box in US interests in the region .

German far-right party, in disarray, still could face ban

The leading German extreme rightist party is on the ropes, because of financial mismanagement, criminal investigations and fierce competition from the left for the populist protest vote. The debate among the authorities here is whether to try to ban it or to allow it to self-destruct quietly.

Hajo Funke, a political scientist at Free University in Berlin who studies rightist extremism, says that the National Democratic Party, or NPD, is certainly a neo-Nazi organization, and that German neo-Nazis, to whom he attributes more than 150 murders and 15,000 violent crimes since reunification in 1990, remain a significant threat.

Rightist coalition formed in Belgrade

Serbian nationalists and allies of the late president Slobodan Milosevic signed a coalition agreement Wednesday to form the city government in Belgrade, making it very likely that an extreme-right politician would become the capital's powerful mayor.

The agreement among the ultranationalist Radicals, Milosevic's Socialists and the Popular coalition of the outgoing prime minister, Vojislav Kostunica, would see the pro-Western Democrats forced from power in Belgrade for the first time in more than 10 years.

The death penalty -- the actual carrying out of an execution -- has real value in such situations. Despite what some condemned men claim, they don't want to die that way. The only reason the death penalty has lost deterrent value is that it isn't applied consistently, frequently and quickly enough.

I couldn't agree more. But the liberals in this state are unwilling to place a value on the lives of police officers over the scum that kill them. So the cop killing goes on.
My point is financial - if they have no intention of carrying out the death penalty anyway, why go through this prolonged legal charade? It doesn't benefit the taxpayers one iota.

Pelosi Credits Iran’s “Goodwill” for Surge Success

In an interview yesterday with the San Francisco Chronicle, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi claimed the U.S. troop surge failed to accomplish its goal. She then partially credited the success of the troop surge to “the goodwill of the Iranians,” claiming that they were responsible for ending violence in the southern city of Basra.

Asked if she saw any evidence of the surge’s positive impact on her May 17 trip to Iraq she responded:

Well, the purpose of the surge was to provide a secure space, a time for the political change to occur to accomplish the reconciliation. That didn’t happen. Whatever the military success, and progress that may have been made, the surge didn’t accomplish its goal. And some of the success of the surge is that the goodwill of the Iranians-they decided in Basra when the fighting would end, they negotiated that cessation of hostilities-the Iranians.

The stuff that goes on in academia every single day -- it simply boggles the mind.

Ever heard of the concept of "meritocracy"? To the average person, meritocracy is without question the self-evidently only method for the organization of a fair society: it means that the best people for any particular job, task or role be allowed to assume that position, regardless of social class or race. What could be fairer than that? Isn't that the dreamt-of goal, a perfectly fair society, free of nepotism and racism? For example, we have presidential elections, in which we search for the "best" possible president. We have top-flight graduate schools, where the best students in engineering, medicine, law, and so forth study to become engineers, doctors and lawyers. We hire people with good driving records to drive school buses; we let people who are good cooks become chefs in restaurants. Etc.

Why, zombie, you buffoon, why are you wasting our time with this? It's so obvious that it doesn't even merit discussion. Of course meritocracy is good. No one questions that.

Here's why:

Because in academia, the latest villainous mechanism of oppression that must be destroyed is -- the meritocracy! Yes, our schools are teaching that meritocracy is bad. It used to be that they would try to undermine meritocracy euphemistically, because only a madman would overtly state his opposition to the meritocracy. Only a lunatic would insist on having the slowest runners on the nation's Olympic track team, on having blind people drive school buses, on having clumsy oafs become brain surgeons. And yet more in more in academia, they are overtly attacking meritocracy as a concept.

For example, this speech is being given right now at U.C. Berkeley:

Challenges to Meritocracy: A Study of Student Admission and Progression at the University of Oxford, UK

I looked into it: the lecturer's point is that it's a BAD thing that the best students get admitted to Oxford graduate school, and we need to expand (the British equivalent of) "socio-economic affirmative action" and have as the primary criteria for admission: what social class you are from. If you are from the lower or working class, you get admitted to Oxford. If you are from a well-off family, you get rejected -- even if you have the best grades and are the best-qualified student.

This is nothing but bald communism, wreaking revenge on successful people by punishing their children.

The more you look into this, the more common it is.

The moonbats have taken over the asylum.

In the early 1980s, the Ohio Division of Travel and Tourism announced a new state tourism slogan: “Ohio, the Heart of It All”. This slogan takes on several new layers of meaning now that international hate sheikh Khalid Yasin has decided to continue his “Islamic Hatred in the Heartland” tour by spending this week delivering his message of hatred, bigotry and violence in mosques all around Central Ohio.

If the death penalty is formally abolished (again), do you think for one minute that the advocates for cop-killers will simply throw up their hands and say, "Oh, well, that's okay then -- just as long as the State isn't going to execute my heroes, we'll be content to let the matter drop"?

Magically, the number and cost of appeals will either remain the same -- or rise, as the principle of abusive appeals spreads from Death Row to the general population.

You are obviously equating phallo-centric, logocentric, capitalist, white middle-class values with merit. These values are merely the superstructure of an economic system of exploitation. Class, color, and gender are the only realities.

What you call "ability" is defined by socio-economic class. The values of the "privileged" classes cannot be understood as some supernatural, absolute standard by which a chimerical entity called "merit" can be measured.

Since the system of late-capitalism is grossly oppressive, the only HOPE is to CHANGE to a new system of values that counter the superstructure of the ruling rich.
If you dispute this, you are obviously a pawn of the rich, white, phallocracy.

A court in French-Flanders annulled a marriage since the bride turned out not to be a virgin, report French newspaper Libération. The judges came to the conclusion that the bridegroom was deceived concerning an 'essential characteristic' of the bride, who had assured him before the wedding that she was still virgin.

The judges therefore decided to apply a law which is seldom used.

President Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, on Thursday, gave less than 24 hours (until last week Friday) ultimatum to homosexuals, drug dealers, thieves and other criminals, to leave The Gambia or face serious consequences if caught.

"Any hotel, lodge or motel that lodges this kind of individuals will be closed down, because this act is unlawful. We are in a Muslim dominated country and I will not and shall never accept such individuals in this country".

He stated that a law is in place regarding this unlawful acts tougher than the Iranian laws and warned those involved in this infamous activities to desist from them. He maintained that foreigners are highly welcome into The Gambia, but not bad elements.

re: #238 wolfie

Iran Arrests Suspected Converts to Christianity

Amid a growing crackdown on religious freedom, Iranian police reportedly have been rounding up people they suspect have converted to Christianity.

On May 11, police arrested eight people in the southern city of Shiraz, according to Carl Moeller, president of Open Doors USA, a Christian organization that fights religious persecution.

Converting from Islam is a crime in Iran; converts can face jail and other penalties.

"Other penalties" meaning death. Come on, fox- don't sugar coat it.

Uh oh, look for more activists (read Terrorists with AK-47s and RPGs) to hold protests (read kill people) in Lebanon.

Lebanese president reappoints prime minister

The Arab League-brokered agreement gave the opposition veto power over all government decisions. However, the parliamentary majority was able to push through its candidate for prime minister over the opposition's objections.

The opposition — composed of the militant Iranian-backed Hezbollah, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri's bloc and the group of Christian leader Michel Aoun — quickly signaled its displeasure with the majority's decision.

The opposition considers Saniora a provocative figure who has rejected power-sharing in the past and they have often accused him of serving U.S. interests in Lebanon.

Aoun said after talks with the president that Saniora was not acceptable as premier, claiming he would stand in the way of reconciliation.

Mohammed Raad, leader of Hezbollah's 14-member bloc in parliament, said Saniora failed to meet the "necessary requirements" to head a national unity government. He indicated Hezbollah wanted another candidate who would reassure the group it could hold on to its weapons.

Hillary’s Rhetoric vs. Obama’s Hypocrisy
by Tammy Bruce

My disappointment with what is at least Hillary’s sloppy, and tasteless rhetoric was mitigated when I heard Obama’s speech on Sunday to Wesleyan graduates. He warned the 700+ undergraduates and 120 doctoral students of the “poverty of ambition” and essentially encouraged them to not pursue the American dream–

“You can take your diploma, walk off this stage and chase only after the big house and the nice suits and all the other things that our money culture says you should.” He continued, “But I hope you don’t.”

This from a 46-year-old man who is running for president, who made over $4 million last year, owns a nice home and wears plenty of great suits.

I was only trying to create a broad spectrum of symbols having meaning, and wanted to include a subject that was dear to liberal individuals that would have claimed that the Kiffeyah is "just a scarf".

In hindsight however it probably would have been better to just stick with the horrible symbols as they are more a kin to the Kiffeyah in so far that by themselves they are nothing more then what they are but when the symbolism is attributed to them they become horrible symbols of racism, hatred, violence, murder and intolerance.

A wise man knows his limitations. While I've been described as fairly smart, recent evidence does not indicate wisdom.

While most all my money was made with my mind, true enjoyment and satisfaction has come from working with my hands. I can raise a roof, frame a house, lay tile, run cable, even wire a house (if someone with better attention to detail will make sure that the electricity is turned off).

So when my darling bride expressed an interest in having another bathroom, I thought "What could possibly go wrong?" After all, water naturally runs downhill, so all you have to do is wrap a pipe around it and there you are. Thus began a comedy of errors reminiscent of a Three Stooges episode, minus two.

Did you know that there are at least three types of pipes that can be used under a house? True, dat. There is the old standby hard copper, soft copper or compression pipe, and plastic or PVC. Don't ask about melding these three, because they all use different connectors of different sizes. Did you know that hot water plastic pipes are different sizes than cold? Or that inlet pipes and waste pipes are just different enough not to interchange? Did you know that the possibility of a pipe leaking is best expressed as the inverse of accessibility?

Did you know that a good plumber costs roughly what a good doctor does? Did you know that they are both worth what they cost?

This is really, really disgusting. Kind of like how feminist champion abortion as women's rights, indeed a fundamental human right, when globally it is used to eliminate girls in apalling numbers to please their wretched fathers rather than make any mother's life easier.

I will tell you what, any father on this thread that has a daughter will know what I mean.

I believe that you are right. It also has the negative effect of giving those who wish to discredit the statement an "out" (no pun intended) of discussing the real statement being made.

ie: instead of discussing if a "scarf is only a scarf" they will point to how this right-wing-hate-filled-Bush-loving-McCain Voting-wackjob hates homosexuals (I don't. Best Friend since pre-school is gay), and thinks being gay is like being a Nazi.

I would request then that if anyone is going to use the code in #183 that they remove the section that includes "just a button"....

...and just use this code here: (hit "quote" function and the code is placed in your "comments" box. From there you can copy & paste)

re: #328 Silhouette

I read that first thing this morning. I was going to link it here, but got pulled away into other things.

The dismissal of living girls as unwanted trash is just evil.

Were you here when mommydoc used to post? She said that behaviour was common among her islamic patients, typically the man. One "father" left the delivery room ("Oh, it's just a girl") and didn't return even to pick up mom in 2 days. The previous birth, when it had been a son, he stayed the whole time.

This has been disturbing to me for some time, but it is particularly so now that Mrs. Hawk and I are no longer able to have kids. We have one son, and we really wanted a daughter as well and we tried for years.

I wonder if the West should just accept these 'unwanted' girl children from all those cultures that do not want them. In fact, provide a very easy way for them to 'give (us) their poor, their tired, their huddled daughters.' Then I wonder what will happen when they all face the same unbalanced population that China is now dealing with when the boys all want wives.

Next time some idiot talks about 'Hussein' particularly some elderly Jewish idiot (a subsector who unfortunately have been coming out in droves in the last few weeks), you might point out that he also has a first name that is the same as the last name of the Defense Minister of Israel.

If you don't want to go to the link, it is on how Jews in Florida are afraid (no sh*t) that Barack will be bad for Israel.

Now it isn't Obama's name that bothers me, it is his advisors, and statements he made over the past year or so.

Just got this in an e-mail. Sometime you just can't make this stuff up . . .

In United States v. Dedman, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit has issued a False Claims Act opinion that opens with with this description of the facts:

"This unusual case arises from the marriage between defendant Darlene Dedman’s (“Dedman”) adopted daughter (who was actually Dedman’s cousin) and Dedman’s adoptive father. Dedman appeals her conviction on the counts of conspiracy to defraud the United States Department of Defense, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 286, and making material false statements to a federal agent, in violation of 18 U.S.C. § 1001. For these offenses she was sentenced to 27 months of imprisonment and ordered to pay over $200,000 in restitution. The government alleged that Dedman orchestrated the marriage as part of a plan to collect her adoptive father’s, John Watson’s (“Watson”), military pension. Dedman argues that she could not be guilty of conspiracy because the marriage between her adopted daughter and her adoptive father was valid and, therefore, there was no false claim. Furthermore, Dedman asserts that if the marriage was statutorily invalid, then the marriage law is unconstitutional."

Another Kossack comment:

If you don't want to go to the link, it is on how Jews in Florida are afraid (no sh*t) that Barack will be bad for Israel.

Now it isn't Obama's name that bothers me, it is his advisors, and statements he made over the past year or so.

Does anyone think this comment shows any latent anti-Semitism from a dyed-in-the-wool moonbat? Or just the typical blind moonbattishness?

Doesn't typical blind moonbattishness go hand-in-hand with latent anti-semitism, in all cases?

Boryspil Airport Hotel is a place where you are most likely to feel Home Comfort at the Cross airlines. Advantageous location together with high standards of service makes it extremely attractive for various groups of visitors - tourists, businessmen and other guests willing to get real Slavonic hospitality.

So... did you feel Home Comfort at the Cross airlines?

Not sure what that means, but the translation to English is not so good there. In the hand book in my room it said, "Place all rubbish in a bin for dust". I kid you not. Each floor has a den mother who is responsible for room cleaning and doing your laundry. Sometimes the den mother would send you away with a wave of her hand when you brought your laundry. :( We did have security priviledges at the airport, somewhat, so I got to see a really cool old building that was supposedly occupied by the Germans in WWII. That was the highlight of the trip.

I'd agree with you, except that the numbers don't play out. Homosexuals account for 6%, and Christians 85% of the population.

And the funny thing is, they are not mutually exclusive either. Some of the 6% are in the 85%, and vice versa.

Outlook is part of Office; Outlook Express is part of Windows, although it was replaced with something else in Vista.
OE is less sophisticated, but has some advantages, such as keeping each folder in its own file.
Outlook has a calendar, notes, address book, etc; OE has a more limited address book. Outlook integrates with Microsoft Exchange, used by companies for email and calendars.
That's a start.

Scanning documents into Outlook? I wasn't aware of Outlook as scanning software. If you have a scanner, just scan into a file, and send it as an attachment. If it's too large to attach, get a decent and inexpensive program like WinRAR that can break it up in pieces that will auto-assemble for the person receiving the document. Outlook works with an existing email account, and most of them have attachment limits that vary but are usually around 1 MB.

The Minister started crying at that point. You get the drift. In any case, the link can still be there - even after all of the survivors are gone. The point of the Minister's talk was that Jews need to be at the table in order to tell their story. Nobody else can do it for them.

Regarding Pelosi:

Pelosi Credits Iran’s “Goodwill” for Surge Success

Well, the purpose of the surge was to provide a secure space, a time for the political change to occur to accomplish the reconciliation. That didn’t happen. Whatever the military success, and progress that may have been made, the surge didn’t accomplish its goal. And some of the success of the surge is that the goodwill of the Iranians-they decided in Basra when the fighting would end, they negotiated that cessation of hostilities-the Iranians

Thats a brilliant story - and its now our generation which has to tell what we 've been told.
After all - Israel kept the faith alive over thousands of years, in exile.
And yes, it is high time that Christians grasped the fact that Jesus is the continuation of the story and the covenant of God and Israel, that there is no break, that we are all included now i n this ongoing story.

No anti-Semitic comments; I don't know if the way my status on the project was affected.
When they were added, it got re-designed, and about the only reason I have an important part anymore is that my version worked, and their idea didn't pan out. This might just be a backlash to the earlier version, or the typical attitude of techies deciding their approach is better.
Or a combination.

They're gloating over polling numbers for Obamathotep outside my cube now, although that is because another conversation was going on with my neighbor and they joined in.

As yet, force projection is beyond the ChiComs. They can only fight where they can walk to. Not so good for their neighbors, I'll admit, but there you are.

The reason that the USA is the only remaining superpower is that we are the only folks around that can load up an army and drop it off on your beaches. Or cities.

Assuming that a ground force is thought necessary. Otherwise the navy will stand off and pound you, or the air force will rain ruin upon you.

Well, unless we listen to those 'proportionate response' types. That total war thing does seem to be a relic of the past.

I have also used sendspace.com for very big files that would otherwise flood an inbox...it's excellent.

I'm sure there are myriad options to solve wrath's issue. I can combine WinRar with QuickPar to send documents gigabytes in size with no chance of error without even bothering with an online file parking service. The problem with sending very large files over the internet is that they are likely to become corrupted during the journey, which can result in fatal error, especially with compressed files, which is the only way I will send large documents.

Any good program that can reliably split large files into smaller parts, when backed up by a quality par file program, can mean guaranteed 100% accurate data transmission.

You have to be comfortable enough in your own skin, and in this country especially, realize that your success is not based on others.

There is no reason for me to hate them, they aren't causing the problems in this country, the politicians are. There is some guy at my gym I speak with occasionally that is somehow involved in Porn-type entertainment, and his wife is some type of porn star. She comes in sometimes, and the other guys tell me she's flat out gorgeous (I'm trained never to mention I noticed such details).
He talks about these wild parties they go to, drives a Mercedes and has a home here near Reading PA and one in CA.

Being a Bible-thumping happily married man, he deserves more wrath for allowing his wife to be exposed to that shit than Homosexuals do. My primary role as a Christian husband/father is to protect my 4 princesses from that garbage.

my point is merely that we can see in the operation of society that secularism divorced entirely from the grounding of religious belief goes adrift.

Your words "divorced entirely" are well said.

Secularism, like bureaucracy, has acquired a bad reputation because it is recently being used as a tool by diverse interests to further their parochial goals. It has become fundamentalist whereas if applied moderately it would be a cooperative agent of a diverse and democratic society.

I do not know how a complex, modern democratic society such as the USA could thrive without moderate secularism. So how do you moderate secularism in such a society? By the promotion of religion?

re: #432 Kosh's Shadow

I don't think the Kos comment is antisemitic. The Kos person appears to be trying to "normalize" Barack Obama's first name...(Here's the problem -- as I see it -- some religions have naming conventions -- so, say, if you're religious and Jewish, it's a good thing to choose the appropriate name for one's child -- and it'll be a Jewish/Hebrew name; something similar occurs with Islam -- you won't (typically) find non-Muslims with Muslim names (such as "Mohammad" -- a very, very common name given to male Muslim children)...Ditto for the name "Hussein" -- for Muslims the name "Hussein" identifies the person (with the name "Hussein") as another Muslim. I believe this, in part, explains why (around the Muslim world), they're all celebratory and excited about Obama's campaign for President (they are convinced -- also because his father was Muslim -- that Obama is a Muslim.) Now we in the west know that Obama identifies himself as a Christian...and that Obama is not a Muslim. It's just that that's not the way many Muslims view Obama. (One can only speculate about what consequences this would have on an Obama presidency...) but, i do believe it's a variable that should be taken into consideration.

Even then they substitute "Fearless Leader Worship" because their "fearless" leaders for life have life&death power over them, literally.

Remember North Koreans fainting & blubbering when Kim Il JOng's father the previous Fearless Leader died? He was their God figure.

Same with Lenin, exhibited in his clear casket in Red Square, which millions of Communists forcibly worshipped like some sort of spiritual leader.

Che, Fidel, [insert current favorite totalitarian leader here] all are celebrity worshipped by this cult of supposedly NON-religious dupes.

I think buzzsaw was referring to *cultures*, not individual lives. And "as an atheist" [hate that formulation] I have to admit, explicitly atheistic *cultures* don't have a terribly good track record.

You're right on the track record. All those cultures were forced into atheism though, and I tend to think suffered for it, much as a culture suffers when a religion is forced upon them.

I cannot see a time in the near future when there will not be a significant part of any culture made up of religious people, and the people do, after all, define the culture. (Unless you are in France, where they try to legislate it) So it seems a bit of a moot point.

I wonder, does the American Western culture appear to be secular as a result of the multitude of religious expression that is tolerated, creating a situation where no single one dominates it, leading to a prevalence of secular symbolism? I know that Christianity is really the majority religion here, but with so many flavors of it, is its effect somewhat diluted?

Oops, I have to get back to work and test some software in the lab. Later all.

CPS was way out of line. And more of it comes to light every day. Did you see this article? I can't find anything else about this black woman who supposedly made the hoax phone call and I don't know anything about the website. If true the woman is 32 not a teen. Have you seen anything?

Obama Delegate Behind Texas Polygamy Hoax

The hits keep coming in the media meltdown at the Barack Obama campaign. As local police, the Texas Rangers and the FBI investigate the hoax phone call that lead to the massive raid on the Texas polygamist compound, word emerges that the woman arrested for the hoax is ... a pledged delegate to the Obama campaign?

Thirty-three year-old Rozita E. Swinton was arrested in Colorado Springs, Colo., and “charged with false reporting to authorities in connection with the Fundamental Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints case in Texas,” reports the Houston Chronicle. Swinton is listed as a Precinct 269 state delegate pledged to Barack Obama, according to the El Paso (CO) County Democratic Party, a fact first reported by some conservative blogs.

Investigators say Swinton, who is black, is “obsessed” with the polygamist cult.

But consider; how'd you like to be on one of those slow troop carriers trying to dodge the US navy all the way to California? Or maybe you fancy your odds better in an airliner making it all the way to US airspace without those pesky flyboys noticing your entry?

Look, I'm not trying to minimize the menace. It is there, and growing every time we buy one of those cheap electronic doodads we're so fond of. But were I a Russian, I'd be more worried about China casting covetous glances Siberia way. India and China have fought hot little engagements not so long ago. Vietnam and China don't really have much love lost. And when I heard that China had requested help from the Japanese armed forces regarding the latest earthquake, I was shocked.

And it's not exactly like our economy and capabilities are going to stand still. I mean, regardless of what the MSM are preaching, that ol' devil recession is taking his own sweet time appearing.

I like our chances. It's not going to be all skittles and beer, but I like our chances.

Speaking of the radical secular unmooring of cultures -- I think Britain is an instructive example...On the one hand there's the rampant binge drinking (it's reached epidemic proportions), along with the elites in Britain OK'ing the use/creation of human-animal embryos (along with the creation of a fetus so as to be used for spare organ parts, if need be for other siblings); seemingly a zero reverence for human life or anything else to be held sacred (a kind of strident atheism)...and that's at one end of the spectrum...And at the other end is the rise of rampant fundamentalist Islam (complete with honor killings, head-to-toe veils, etc.) yeah, the UK --..nice place to visit, perhaps (but I wouldn't want to live there).

Breaking -

S. 3036 Lieberman-Warner Climate Security Act of 2008

Sean Hannity was just talking about this a few minutes ago, calling it the energy version of McCain's amnesty bill. In english, this bill proposes a cap-and-trade system to limit CO2 emissions. Wall Street Journal is calling this the biggest reorganization of the US economy since the 1930s. It goes up for vote NEXT WEEK.

Does someone have the link to the Wall Street Journal article?

Also interesting - Montana Sec of State proposes secession over 2nd Amendment.

Just a note here. On Monday Mark Steyn/Macleans Mag is being hauled before the court in a lawsuit that does not bode well for another country based on freedom of speech. Technically, this is an even bigger case than that which has been brought against Ezra Levant.

3 Muslim law students are trying to compel Steyn's magazine to print a rebuttal.

FREEDOM!

Court (donwtown Vancouver courthouse) hears the case at 8:00 a.m. on Monday.

FLDS ARE CREEPS, and polygamists problem the CPS used too broad a brush they should have taken there time and did it right there were plenty of cases were there was statutory rape, Just read the one girls account of were she was force to marry at 14 which in Texas is rape.

The one thing islmo fascism and FLDS have in common is there oppression of women, were FLDS is only harmful to themselves the islamists aren't so picky.

Bahrain names Jewish woman as ambassador to US

Bahrain's king has appointed a woman believed to be the Arab world's first Jewish ambassador as the country's envoy to Washington.

Lawmaker Houda Nonoo said she was proud to serve her country "first of all as a Bahraini," adding she was not chosen for the post because of her religion.

A French high court decided last month to annul a Muslim's marriage because he discovered that his wife was not 'pure' - i.e. not a virgin. It's causing a huge scandal in France as it's the first time the high court has enforced a religious edict.

From the article:

"Women's rights group, 'No Whores, No Submission" said that this decision was a regression and they expressed sadness that in France virginity could be considered an "essential quality" of a woman."

Bad translation of it here

re: #682 paxnhymn

my feelings exactly!GMTA.

Afternoon, all. Taking a break from watching vid of the humungous condo complex fire over on Rtes 128/1. Wondered what tied up the traffic so bad driving home.

If we are outraged by 9 year old girls being sold into "marriage" in the Muslim world, why should we be less outraged when it happens in a fundie Mormon sect in Texas? Those little girls are US citizens and entitled to the protection of their government. Why were the authorities unable to take action until that spurious tip was called in?

Because it's a RELIGION. Do you think that if the residents of a dozen square blocks of some average US city or town formed an organization, designated a leader, and proceeded to conduct on a regular basis marriages under the age of consent because the pervert adults invovled grooved on the idea it would take this long before intervention occurred?

But no, as in almost all things cult, the presence of a belief system incorporating a huge ancient invisible old man in the sky giving the orders means there has to be free pass after free pass for these creeps before something can be done, and of course by that time what is done is almost as bad as the crime to which it is a response.

I have been atheist since I was 19 years old. I am now 64. I know that makes me the object of disdain, dislike, selfrightreous outrage, pious pity, and moral suspicion by many, including many here. Yet I have never invoked the authority of a god to try to harm someone for my own pleasure. I spent many years fighting against people who were doing just that. I'm stuck with spending too damn much of my time fighting another crew of them now.

Yes, the brainwashed mommies and lordly "daddies" of those kids will get them back, and the "daddies" will go on screwing those 9 year old girls because Mr. Jessup the rest of them like it. And are eager to tell us all how much God approves of it.

Can't be moral without religious faith? Well, since I don't have any I guess my opinion counts for nothing anyway. I'm sure Patrick Buchanan thinks so. And we've all just gotten a taste of where his moral rudder is pointing lately.

When you talk about whether man can be moral without faith you are not discussing pure abstractions. There are, in fact, quite a number of us in this fight against who lack religious faith. If some of you genuinely think our morals and commitment must be suspect because of this, what would you prefer we do? Go away and fight as our own little pariah cell? Volunteer to be human shields for the faithful should the need arise? Rise to the altar call to make you feel better?

Do you truly respect freedom of conscience or only when it is expressed through religion?

Hey, I ALREADY know what I think, and I speak vociferously on topics regarding freedom of speech.

What an organizer is requesting is a friggin' catchy phrase. While I embrace sarcasm, you have no need to stoop so low as to think we need someone to "think" for us.

Steyn's plight, in case you did not know, has an impact on American political discourse as well. And, yes, I am concerned that Steyn will lose and only 5 or so Canadians will even have any idea about the case.

Slow down, relax. I thought the point of the tagline was to show sarcasm at the idiots perpetrating this BS against Mark and others. And as I said good luck with the rally at the courthouse. It doesn't seem to me that the magazine should have to print any rebuttal. Personally I wish I could be there. Unfortunately I'm typing from the wonderfull (/sarcasm) republic of Kalifornia. We have our own set of people here who love to cut off all free speech but thiers.

Anyway, have you guys thought of making your slogan "We are all Mark Steyn" into a shirt via CafePress or similar? It'd be a great way to spread your message beyond Canada - I'd certainly buy one to contribute to a legal fund if they have it.

re: #740 infidelia

I don't believe the cult is about "Freedom of Religion" -- rather, it's about the State demonstrating that the age of the girls is, in fact, under age. There are no birth certificates. The State couldn't prove its case. (I think that in itself is worrisome -- why is it that a cult can have members born into the community without bothering to register with the local state/government authorities? and what about death of cult members? -- are there no records there either? It raises all sorts of disturbing questions -- such as the formation of States within States -- which go far, far beyond merely "Freedom of Religion" issues....) No vital statistics being kept by the legitimate government authorities sounds like anarchy to me...
