Another Kaffiyeh Wearer Gets in Trouble

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 8:48:56 am PDT

A store employee in Australia has gotten in trouble for wearing a kaffiyeh: Keffiyeh kerfuffle hits Bondi bottleshop.

More overreacting right-wingers, seeing terrorist symbols where they don’t exist?

No; this time a Palestinian customer complained because she was wearing it for fashion reasons, rather than as a political statement.

Ms Tieger said she had “no idea about the politics” when she bought the scarf at the Tree Of Life store.

“I thought it was a nice scarf, a cowboy scarf. I thought: ‘It’s black and white, no-one will say anything to me because that’s all we can wear [with our work uniform]’.

“A Palestinian customer came up and asked me if I’m wearing this scarf as a fashion statement or for political reasons.

“I had no idea what he was talking about because I don’t follow politics at all. I just laughed it off.

“Two days later he called and complained about it.”

Shevonne Hunt, a freelance journalist who has reported on the keffiyeh's popularity in Australia, said many Palestinians were annoyed the widespread use of the keffiyeh for fashion had watered down its meaning.

Depends on if it's fashionable or political to hide your guns and drugs.

Talk to a cop. They LOVE the baggy pants/no belt/boxers hanging out six inches thing.

Why?

Because these fools still keep their wallets in their pants. When they try to run from the cops, down go the pants.

I have a friend who is a Harris County (Texas) sheriff's deputy. He's done at least one arrest where they just drove over to the dummy house and arrested him as he walked up in his drawers.

"No, he's not a soccer player. He's a bad man who liked to kill kids your age for fun."

I bet that would go over really well.

:D

It was for 2011. As I understand it, we will all be floating in the rising ocean, which will be full of drowned polar bears. Whales will rule the world once more, and they will seek revenge. Man, once at the top of the food chain, will devolve back into his primitive swimming ape form, clinging bitterly to guns and religion in the shallows of the Ohio and Illinois seas. Texas will slide back into the Gulf, no longer kept back even by the fact that Oklahoma sucks. Crops will fail, but shrimp will be cheap, plentiful, and tasteless due to shortages of butter and cornmeal. New Orleans will replace Atlantis, and the soggy ape poets will write dirges for the lost welfare paradise as they sit on their bamboo perches.

Supposedly they are a reference to the droopy-drawers effect that occurs in prison, where one is not allowed a belt.

In addition to the straightforward "I'm-tough-'cause-I'm-a-prison-thug" implication, there is also an oblique implication that Mr. Droopy Drawers is so extra tough that he can protect his back passage from the assaults which often occur in prison, despite the fact that his half-mast pants are making it...more available.

sorry, minor and polite correction here
droop drawers in prison means one thing

you are checked in by inmates
given clothes by inmates
if you are given droopy drawers, the inmate(s)
that checked you in, marked you for rape bait
it's not a nadge of honor, it's a target

I think 2012 will be a banner year for Republicans.

First, the 2010 census will be complete and Texas will gain at least four seats. The other seats will go to light red or light blue states, away from dark blue NY, etc.

Secondly, the MSM, at least the print media, will have collapsed. Americans will be getting their news from overtly biased sources. If the left continues to visit only their own lefty sites and hear only their own voices in their echochamber, we on the right will be more broad in our sourcing and info. This will be a huge advantage in elections.

Thirdly, because I'm expecting to win the presidency and lose Senate/House seats in 2008, many of these seats will switch back into the Republican column in 2012.

Fourthly, Republicans have children and more of them than Dems. By 2012, many of our children will be voting Rep. Of all the demographic and other data used to predict voting preferences, the most reliable and accurate indication is how one's family voted. Since we usually vote R, our kids will too!

Fifthly, the stupid opera/play remake of Gore's fantasy science in 2011 will drive the last shivering typical white person(s) into the Republican Party.

They can't pretend they are wearing this as a fashion accessory because to do so would be to offend phakistinians, and it's against libnut ideology to offend any minority or people of color of allegedly oppressed persons. Thus the only way they could wear it is by explicitly avowing phakistinian genocidal political ideology of the phakistinians. This is a red letter day.

Ms Tieger said she had “no idea about the politics” when she bought the scarf at the Tree Of Life store.

On Fox News late show, Red Eye, last night they dumped on those who criticized Rachael Ray/Dunkin Doughnuts; they didn't see the problem. I only barely avoided having a one-way conversation with my TV, knowing that they missed the point, the significance is that it is no longer just a scarf to those who anointed it as a symbol for terrorists. Too many people just aren't paying enough attention to what is going on in the world.

And that's because the kaffiyeh is a fashion accessory used as a political symbol by a pseudo-ethnic terrorist group dedicated to exterminating the Jewish race.

Wow! Now there's a great novelty product idea. Do you remember seeing the toilet paper rolls that resemble dollar bills, so you can wipe your a** with money? Someone should produce a roll of keffiyeh TP, I am certain there is a market for it.

I'm a little concerned about the fringe.

I think the young lady has beautiful eyes and the fact some store sold her a loaded political symbol is shameful.

She seems like a pretty normal person who got caught up in other people' idiocy. The fact the Palestinians' symbol is a mask to disguise who they are is quite apt. All notions of democracy and honorable adherence to the laws of war are hidden by the scarf. You hide your identity because you are fighting outside the normal laws of war.

Ms. Teigan, you are forgiven.

That's why we adopt it. So that it no longer is identified with the totalitarians. Otherwise we can stick to our "symbols" that are in place. Do you have an example of one that has come out of this current war?

Sorry, I'm sticking with my symbols, not the caliphates'.

How's this for an idea - *everyone* start wearing one. Seriously. Turn the kaffiyeh into nothing more than a mildly unattractive scarf until it loses all meaning as a symbol of 'solidarity.' Diluting the power of their symbols might actually work out well.

203 dmjboose  Fri, May 30, 2008 10:05:42am

I dunno, it's times like these where I think mainstreaming the scarf is one of the best ways of belittling the terrorists. Plus, it's one of the things the capitalist machine does best: take what's good (looking) and leave out the rest. While I think it's important to avoid using the scarf as a symbol, I think it's great that we're pissing off Palestinians by making "their symbol" meaningless. I'd love to see a scarf like that that says "horray israel" on the front or something like that.

How ironic.

The kaffiyeh is not a political symbol in the Middle East. Normal people wear it as a scarf when it's cold and windy. Outside the Middle East, however, it has become a a political symbol. And that is only because terrorist sympathizers decided to use it as one.

this is classic. I have an idea. Lets let all the "fashionable" cool people who want to wear the rag go and hang with Hamas for a week in Gaza. I think that with the purchase of these rag they should come with an all expense paid week long vacation in the heart of beautiful GAZA. I think it would really open their eyes, and possibly necks to the real situation over there. I mean what better way to be sensitive than to actually go over there. I mean, since you bought the rag it shows "solidarity" with Hamas and all the "victimized" people.

Then when the cool, fashionably hip people get kidnapped and held for ransom....we just let them stay there. It would be an excellent learning experience for all the kooks in the rags like rachael ray.

Symbols and their meanings. Symbols can lose their meanings, too.

Long ago (man, I'm getting old) I was a rep for a consumer goods company and based in Pine Bluff, AR. Pine Bluff was and is a majority minority city (what I'm trying to say is that it was about 40% white and 60% black) so most of the customers I dealt with were not of my racial background.

There was a TV show called The Dukes of Hazzard, and it probably says something about our society when I tell you that this show was a hit. People loved it. Couple of country bumpkins and a leggy boobalicious girl doing improbable car tricks in a late '60's Dodge Charger with a Confederate flag on it (the red one with the X on it, not the stars and bars). Come to think of it, I believe that a movie may have been recently made so you've probably heard of it.

Annnywho, I'm working in one of my stores one day behind the counter and this little black boy (I'd guess no older than 10, if that old) asked me to hand him one of the toy cars displayed behind me. I did so, giving him a black Charger. He refused my pick, saying "Naw, man, gimme one wit de Duke sign on it."

At the time, I thought it a harbinger of better racial relations that what once was the symbol of a country that had most likely enslaved his ancestors had become simply a 'Duke sign' and meant nothing more to this child than a connection to a popular TV show.

Read the newer posts on this thread, "Justice", the ones about the Moslem who complained about a salesclerk wearing the Kaffiyah as a mere fashion statement, not a symbol of struggle, and the other one, wherein it's stated that the Kaffiyah is a symbol of Palestinian struggle.

It's not Charles who'se being consistent about the Kaffiyah being a terrorist symbol. It's Moslems themselves.

P.S. Well, as I recall, none of the characters in "Dukes of Hazard' advocated terrorism, or killing innocents to get their message (Dukes of Hazard had a message?) across to anybody----unlike Yassir Arafat, and countless other Kaffiyah wearers. If you can show us a contemporary terrorist movement that advocates murdering civilians and spreading terror, and which uses the Confederate flag as their symbol, then we'll all condemn the brain-dead idiots who flaunt it as a fashion statement. (Yeah, I know some bikers and white power types have tried co-opting it---but not to the point that the kaffiyeh's been taken up by moonbat fashionistas. And there is, at this moment, no organized criminal gang with great power, like Hamas or Hezbollah, flaunting the Stars and Bars.)

P.P.S. By the by---as I recall, you never did answer any questions on the other thread, re the "victimization" T-shirt. Or the one before that. Seriously, do you have anything to offer other than snarky snarkisms?

234 TalkinKamel  Fri, May 30, 2008 2:29:25pm

re: #200 doppelganglander

Yes. In Australia a bottleshop is the liquor outlet attached to a pub. For reasons that are unclear you can't (don't) buy bottles to take-away from the bar but from the bottleshop.

BTW Bondi is the Sydney suburb considered to be the heart of the (Jewish) 'ghetto'. Kemenys is a large liquor distributor - wine merchant. It is (or was) a Jewish owned business. Technically I don't think it's a bottle shop but I may just be nitpicking.

BTW When I first visited Israel in 1973 I bought a keffiya in Jerusalem. At that time anyone wearing a keffiya in Sydney was almost certainly a Jewish student who had visited Israel. After a while I stopped wearing it and it gave me several years good service as a tablecloth.

Personally I have to agree with NSW Jewish Board of Deputies CEO Vic Alhadeff from the original article. He said

the wearing of the keffiyeh as a fashion item was a "non-issue".

"It's a non-issue as far as we are concerned. If someone chooses to wear such an item for whatever reason that's their choice."
