The Kaffiyeh: More Than Just a Scarf - Update: ANSWER Calls for Dunkin' Donuts Boycott!

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 1:49:14 pm PDT

Any more questions about whether the kaffiyeh is “just a scarf,” or a well-known symbol of Palestinian “resistance?”

An article by Mafaz al-Suwaidan in the very leftist, pro-Palestinian Toronto Star makes the point beautifully: More than just a chic checkered scarf.

“The kaffiyeh is a visual extension of our struggle, a way to be a thorn in the silence,” says Ahmad Habib, Iraqi refugee and a member of the Arab Cultural Resistance music group. “Everywhere, from the Arab world to Toronto, people dress up to paint the world with conformity and indifference. The kaffiyeh stands in the way of that.”

The transition of the kaffiyeh from the Middle Eastern version of a baseball cap to a symbol of solidarity came with the occupation of Palestinian land. The kaffiyeh became a symbol of national identity for Palestinians. From the ‘60s on, Palestine Liberation Organization officials and members, such Yasser Arafat, wore the kaffiyeh everywhere they went.

International coverage of the first intifada often showed pictures of Palestinian civilians throwing stones with kaffiyehs around their faces or necks. But afterward, the kaffiyeh was popular only amongst activists and Palestinian refugees.

During the second intifada in 2000, sympathy for Palestinians began to grow and the kaffiyeh became a way of displaying solidarity.

“Ideally, I want everyone to wear the kaffiyeh,” says Habib, “but if it’s just worn for the aesthetic value, without the spirit of resistance wrapped up in every thread, then they might as well not wear it at all, and if it becomes appropriated by commercial interests, then that’s even worse.”

(Hat tip: Peter.)

UPDATE at 5/30/08 3:07:50 pm:

And yet, none of this stops the usual suspects from screaming, “Racism!” Boycott US doughnut chain for halting scarf ad, activists urge.

US activists have called for a boycott of doughnuts-and-coffee chain Dunkin Donuts after it pulled an online ad that a conservative commentator said promoted jihad.

“Dunkin Donuts has capitulated and withdrawn an advertisement for its products following the allegation... that the spokeswoman in the ad was wearing a kaffiyeh, a scarf which is a staple of clothing traditionally worn by Palestinian men,” the ANSWER Coalition said in a statement.

ANSWER, which groups hundreds of anti-war and anti-racism organizations around the United States, called for a “worldwide boycott of Dunkin Donuts... to send a powerful message to corporations that engage in racism or pander to anti-Arab and anti-Muslim racists.”

Of course, normally International ANSWER is the very first moonbat group to stand up and proclaim their “solidarity with the resistance!” But in this case, it’s “just a traditional scarf,” and anyone who objects to it is a “racist.”

“Ideally, I want everyone to wear the kaffiyeh,” says Habib,

I'll wear a burqa before I wear a kaffiyeh- which is to say "never".

“but if it’s just worn for the aesthetic value, without the spirit of resistance wrapped up in every thread, then they might as well not wear it at all, and if it becomes appropriated by commercial interests, then that’s even worse.”

Perfect- then it's settled. I'm never wearing one.

5 Israel4ever  Fri, May 30, 2008 1:52:16pm

well that's it you know. As soon as the kaffiyah becomes "mainstream" and worn by the likes of Paris Hilton, it will no longer be considered cool by white hippie libs.

so there's that at least. I learned all about white libs from this site:

Mafaz Al-Suwaidan, 20, is a Kuwaiti citizen studying journalism at Ryerson University. Accustomed to seeing the scarf used as a political symbol, she was taken by its use as a fashion statement in Toronto and decided to investigate. This article is the product of her curiosity.

She was 3 when her country was liberated. She still is.

My point was, the article is about symapthy growing for palestinians, internationally, while--so because?--they were deploying suicide murder tactics.
I know it's just among ignorant leftist idiots, and it only takes a few ignorant leftist idiots to start a trend, but still, that's just saddening.

Don't worry, though, I'm happy to do the fighting what needs be done.

Thank you, there's a lot of re-educating to do amongst our hipster friends who only think of coolness & sympathize with murderers instead of their victims.

re: #170 Honorary Yooper

It can be broken down to (a) guilt, (b) victimology, and a resulting subconscious need to feel superior.

They consider themselves victims and relate to "victims" and maintain a large amount of guilt for any success or privilege, and this just creates more guilt. Because of all this guilt over their successes and the belief that everyone who doesn't have their exact success is a victim, their need to feel superior puts them in a position where they think they are going to save them.

Just a random thought...

Liberals, for the most thought, IMHO, dislike the US since it is a sucessful country. They would dislike any country that is the country that has amassed the most power. In the middle east they root for the underdog Pal's, since Israel has been powerful and won for the most part each and everytime it has been invaded and attacked.

So... my question. What is it about the "liberal mindset" that is so defeatist?

Speculation of a bitter, gun-toting, Midwesterner:

In my experience, you can achieve prosperity by hard work, honesty, focus, and dedication. On the other hand, if your only experience is one of prosperity and influence gained by deceit, dishonesty, and deflection, you might feel a certain amount of guilt. OT- Pfleger taken to woodshed by Cardinal George:

Chicago's Cardinal Francis George on Friday said that Rev. Michael Pfleger, who mocked Sen. Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of her opponent's South Side church last weekend, has promised the cardinal he will "not mention any candidate by name" in the future.

"To avoid months of turmoil in the church, Father Pfleger has promised me that he will not enter into campaigning," George said in a statement. "[He] will not publicly mention any candidate by name and will abide by the discipline common to all Catholic priests.

"Racial issues are both political and moral and are also highly charged," George said. "Words can be differently interpreted, but Father Pfleger's remarks about Senator Clinton are both partisan and amount to a personal attack. I regret that deeply." [Link: www.chicagotribune.com...]

Interesting quandary for democratic super delegates. These hacks want their patronage and jobs via a democratic President next year. Problem is, is that Obama is being trashed poll-wise in the swing states, and Clinton is their stronger, head-to-head candidate with McCain. But african-americans comprise 10% of their party, and they might stay home in November if it is Hillary.

So the choice is to go over the cliff like lemmings with Obama, or spur racial war within their own party if they choose Hillary.

Bet this is why Al " Mr. Ethanol" Gore is also keeping a low profile.

Then perhaps we need to have it appropriated by commercial interests. Dilute it's value as a "symbol of resistance". If we continue to scorn anyone that wears it then we simply increase its value to the "Palestinian resistance".

re: #245 Desert Dog

You are correct. There is no unique "Palestinian" culture. But the point of the speech was that wearing a Kiffeyeh was to "preserve" the "palestinian" culture against Zionist destruction, and culture cleansing.

Thus this adds more dimensions to the wearing of the Kiffiyeh.

1. Wearing a kiffiyeh "preserves" the culture. Well, this actually means that it supports the belief that there was a culture, and thus a Palestine, and thus the Zionists stole it. Also, since there really wasn't a "palestinian" culture, wearing a Kiffiyeh in a way creates one. If futhers the big lie that is "Palestine". The mainstreaming of this "cultural symbol" contributes to the repeated lie, and as we all know (and as Goebbles taught) the more you tell a lie the more it becomes taken as true. Thus, every idiot wearing a Kiffiyeh is just another propagandist for the lie that there was unique Palestine, with some sort of unique culture etc.

I know a man that owns 4 DD's back in the Boston area. Knowing him as I do, if ANSWER were to ever picket outside his place he would do one of two things, depending on his mood of the day

1),,set up a table outside with free coffee and donuts

or

2) lets just say someone would get the jelly beat out of them

Once again, the LEFT will be hurting the ones that they claim to care about the most. Dunkin Donuts are by and large individual franchises. Small business men and women working 14-16 hour days, employing both young and old people. The "donut maker" in each store gets a pretty good salary, but all others (counter people) for the most part are minimum wage and pool tips.

The keffiyeh's shifting symbolism is confused because the people who support the 'Palestinian Cause' still can't figure out what will work best to remove Israel. Should they support western-style palestinian nationalism, pan-arab tribalism, or dar-al-islam supremacism? What a quandary.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday ruled out his alleged support for the US presidential candidate Barrack Obama.

"I did not support Obama. I just gave the message (in an interview with Spanish daily `El Pais' that the American ruling system will not let Obama be elected. Even if all Americans vote for him, the US ruling system will not allow Obama to be president," Ahmadinejad told reporters after cabinet weekly session when asked about his statement on Obama in an interview with El Pais.

I know the following has been articulated on this thread ad nauseum, but apparently the dolts in the story don't get it.

Arabs are not members of a "race." They are members of a linguistic group. Indonesians certainly are not racially identical to Arabs, though both groups share the Muslim religion.

I am so sick of hearing this "racist" garbage. We are anti-terrorist. We are not anti-semite or anti-malaysian.

The lazy "thinking" of these people will never cease to amaze me. How is it that they're even still alive? Their continued existence disproves the theory of survival of the fittest, not to mention evolution.

Serving Up Support
Chains and franchisees help servicemen and -women over the holidays and beyond. By Jamie Hartford

The holidays are a time to give back, and this year, many quick serves have chosen a worthy cause: the military men and women serving our country abroad.

More than 500,000 service members will be away from their families over Christmas, according to LTC Jonathan Withington, a press officer with the U.S. Department of Defense. To recognize their sacrifices, quick-service chains and franchisees alike are finding creative ways to help them celebrate the holiday while away from home.

Dunkin’ Donuts is partnering with Soldiers’ Angels, a volunteer-based non-profit that aims to provide comfort to deployed military personnel and their families. In keeping with the organization’s motto, “May no soldier go unloved,” Soldiers’ Angels includes a personalized holiday card with each care package sent to a serviceperson. Dunkin’ has helped out by sending holiday cards to franchisees, allowing each store to get involved and have customers help sign the cards.

“To date, we have signed more than 5,000 cards,” says Margie Myers, senior vice president of global communication for Dunkin’ Brands. “The drive will continue through the month of December.”

The company kicked off its support with the Gingerbread Express event held at New York Waterways. Celebrity spokeswoman Rachel Ray unveiled and announced a one-ton donation of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee to Soldiers’ Angels, and New York city shoppers were invited to sign holiday cards. Donations can also be made via [Link: www.ServingHeroes.com,...] an online effort from Dunkin’ Donuts and the Dunkin’ Brands Community Foundation to recognize individuals who have helped emergency response organizations to better serve their communities.

The original Dunkin' Donuts opened in Quincy, a Boston 'burb, in 1950, when I was 12.

We also had one not all that long after, IIRC, in Brighton, where I lived the first 13 years of my life.

A very different world.

OT

I always did like Bob Dole

[Link: www.foxnews.com...]
Bob Dole says Bob Dole is mad at Scott McClellan.

The former Senate majority leader and 1996 Republican presidential candidate sent a nasty e-mail to McClellan calling him a "miserable creature" for his latest book blasting the Bush administration, FOX News has learned.

In the e-mail, Dole basically describes the former White House press secretary as a traitor looking to cash in on the "liberal" media's distaste for President Bush.

"There are miserable creatures like you in every administration who don't have the guts to speak up or quit if there are disagreements with the boss or colleagues," the five-term Kansas senator wrote to McClellan. "No, your type soaks up the benefits of power, revels in the limelight for years, then quits, and spurred on by greed, cashes in with a scathing critique."

He continues: "When the money starts rolling in you should donate it to a worthy cause, something like, 'Biting The Hand That Fed Me.' Another thought is to weasel your way back into the White House if a Democrat is elected. That would provide a good set up for a second book deal in a few years."

LOVE Dunkin' Donuts. For the record, I am 6' 0" and 185, not bad for a 56.7 year old "GrayBlond," Square it at the Shoulders, guy. Their only flaw as far as I am concerned is to have banned SMOKING in the store. Smart as they are, however, seems all locations with enough real estate have outside "Bistro" tables - problem solved as long as it doesn't rain. As to the 185 - Blame Simi's cooking - was 175 before that, and the 'tabolism does slow down a bit after 50.

Evidently not since our own politicans want to cease calling the Global War on Terror just that. How are muslims mentioned there? How is islam mentioned in this war. We may all know it - but it's not specifically mentioned. Terrorism is a tactic and not just islam uses it. Yet they want to stop using this term because it offends and alienates islam.

I'd say CAIR et al is doing a mighty fine job of forcing us to change our language. I mean - just WHAT are we supposed to call it? hhmm?

Many L.A. area fast food restaurants have a 2" thick bulletproof plexiglass barrier at the front counter. There is a small window to exchange money for food. They got tired of losing employees to crack-head / gang violence.

I did not know this...

In an opinion piece in Maclean's last month, Steyn attacked the "totalitarianism" of the Human Rights Commissions, noting:

It's true that "hurtful actions that undermine freedom" and lead to "unspeakable crimes" usually have some fig leaf of intellectual justification. For example, the ideology first articulated by Karl Marx has led to the deaths of millions of people around the planet on an unprecedented scale. Yet oddly enough, no matter how many folks are murdered in the name of Marxism-Leninism, you're still free to propound its principles at every college in Canada.

He goes on to say:

Ah, but that's the Good Totalitarianism. What about the Bad Totalitarianism? You know, the one everybody disapproves of: Nazism. Isn't it obvious that in the case of Adolf Hitler, "hateful words" led to "unspeakable crimes"? This argument is offered routinely: if only there'd been "reasonable limits on the expression of hatred" 70 years ago, the Holocaust might have been prevented.

There's just one teensy-weensy problem with it: pre-Nazi Germany had such "reasonable limits." Indeed, the Weimar Republic was a veritable proto-Trudeaupia. As Alan Borovoy, Canada's leading civil libertarian, put it:

"Remarkably, pre-Hitler Germany had laws very much like the Canadian anti-hate law. Moreover, those laws were enforced with some vigour. During the 15 years before Hitler came to power, there were more than 200 prosecutions based on anti-Semitic speech. And, in the opinion of the leading Jewish organization of that era, no more than 10 per cent of the cases were mishandled by the authorities. As subsequent history so painfully testifies, this type of legislation proved ineffectual on the one occasion when there was a real argument for it."

The Croissant might have been invented to annoy Muslims.
Croissant From Wikipedia

Origin
Fanciful stories of how the bread was created are modern culinary legends. These include tales that it was invented in Poland to celebrate the defeat of a Muslim invasion at the decisive Battle of Tours by the Franks in 732, with the shape representing the Islamic crescent; that it was invented in Vienna in 1683 to celebrate the defeat of the Turkish siege of the city

Couple of things-
I don't really care about RR or SS; they are dopey celebs.

When I was in Baghdad -from Apr 2003 - Nov 2004, lots of soldiers wore then to keep dust out of their faces, and the sun off their necks. Nice Iraqis showed me several ways to tie them. They have been co-opted by Palis, but are a normal part of ME life. Each tribe - Arab, Sunni, Shia, Kurdi, and some Christians tied them all differently, as did the Kuwaitis. This is an attempt by Palis to make their cause universal by using a commom motif.

So, if everyone wore them, it would lose it's cache, if you see what I mean. NOT one Iraqi described it as a Pali symbol. It's just a practicl piece of fabric.

re: #401 mardukhai

I'm a (yuck) professional journalist and I'm collecting a top ten list -- of favorite pro-Palestinian media hoaxes of all time for an article I'm writing.

IMHO, the biggest Palestinean hoax is that the Palestineans are a people who had a homeland before the creation of Israel. Gazans are Egyptians and West Bankers are Jordanians. The creation of the Palestinean myth is one of Arafat's greatest PR coups.

Another big hoax is the 'holocaust' being carried out against the 'Palestineans' by apartheid Israel. As has been said here many times, some holocaust when the Palestinean population increases Lord knows how many fold from 1948 numbers.

Of course, another hoax is that Palestineans are still 'refugees' all these 60 years later (thanks UN!) -- after they voluntarily got out of the way of those big, bad Arab armies from Syria, Jordan, and Egypt who promised to push the Jews into the sea. What other group of displaced people are still considered 'refugees' after 60 years?

Well, you said media hoaxes, not specific journalist hoaxes. To whit: Which specific media member is responsible for us losing Vietnam when we were winning when Tet occurred? There's quite a list, starting with Uncle Walter, but he wasn't the only one. So when our media are complicit in pushing 'Palestinean' propaganda which are outright lies, why nitpick over specific names of members when mostly the whole bloody group are guilty. BYMMV.

I think Dunkin Donuts must have done a national retrenchment strategy sometime not too many years ago. Boulder had one forever, and it suddenly went away not all that long ago. I checked, and there's not a single DD within 50 miles of Denver, and more than 2-1/2 million people live within that space.

I always thought that Dunkin Donuts had OK donuts, but Daylight Donuts put them to shame. But DD's coffee is just spectacularly good, really their signature product. That's what I grieve with them not being around here any more. As far as donuts go, Daylight makes Crispy Creme seem like a poor imitation by comparison.

Why do they find any criticism of Islam to be racism, but never find bigotry in boundless hatred of Israel?

And I'm an economic leftist myself - but find most leftist attitudes loathsome.

549 InternationalObserver  Fri, May 30, 2008 7:00:31pm

Nor will the left allow free debate. EVERY post on the HuffPo Gaza thead condemns Israel for not allowing Fulbright scholars out. But if I try to post a comment defending Israel, it's pre-moderated.

I've never had a conservative site moderate a comment, even ones they disagree with.

Leftists are b-stards.

I saw the CEO of Dunkin Donuts being interviewed today. The man was in tears. Literally, crying his eyes out on national TV. He said:

"This boycott will kill us. Can you appreciate how much the "Islamist-sympathizing Trotskyite Nutcase" market is worth to us annually? An Intl ANSWER Boycott will mean thousands of staff around the world will be laid off . Back onto the dole queues- their dreams in shattered pieces on the floor around them"

551 uptight  Fri, May 30, 2008 7:08:42pm

or not

552 Cognito  Fri, May 30, 2008 7:21:18pm

My, my.

Some gossipy little old folks, on this thread.

The truth, of course, is harder to find. Right, 'republic'?

553 InternationalObserver  Fri, May 30, 2008 7:27:04pm

Another example of the left's anti-Semitic obsession:

Geraldo criticises rabbis and NOT ONE HuffPo poster disagrees.

Dunkin Donuts has capitulated and withdrawn an advertisement for its products following the allegation... that the spokeswoman in the ad was wearing a kaffiyeh, a scarf which is a staple of clothing traditionally worn by Palestinian men,” the ANSWER Coalition said in a statement.

It was peachy keen, however, when Burger King capitulated and withdrew their ice cream lids due to whining and seething from The Muslim Council of Britain who claimed a design on the lid looked like the word Allah.

555 Timbre  Fri, May 30, 2008 8:34:09pm
ANSWER, which groups hundreds of anti-war and anti-racism organizations around the United States...

Too bad they're not anti-idiotarian...

Best diaper rash cream ever is named (no joke)
' Boudreaux's Butt Paste'.
Great stuff.

No leftist would eat at Dinkin' Donuts anyway, at least not unless they have an organic tofu donut variety....

my 0.02 and I'm out...

I saw some of that at my local Wal-Mart the other day.

Something tells me Dunkin' Donuts won't even notice ANSWER's "boycott".

560 kahall  Fri, May 30, 2008 8:56:10pm

I really would not have any problem with what ANSWER is doing if they would just stop throwing the R word around like that. Jeeez! Grow up and call me a NAZI already.

561 Idle Drifter  Fri, May 30, 2008 9:08:52pm

ANSWER, which groups hundreds of anti-war anti-military and anti-racism race baiting organizations mobs around the United States... Fixed.

Donuts are more useful than ANSWER.

re: #39 livefreeor die

How would they feel about kaffiyeh thongs or bikinis?

I think that would make a great website.
Somebody talented with photoshop could whip up a bunch of girlie
models and show how the kaffiyeh should be worn.

It's pay back time. Anyone wanna have some fun?

This is how you fight back...

563 hitnrun  Fri, May 30, 2008 9:49:20pm

So let me get this straight. On one side of this fight, supporters of Israel should buy donuts. On the other side, supporters of the Palestinian freedom-from-life movement must try to not buy donuts.

Gee, I wonder who's going to win this fight?

564 Student of Objectivism  Fri, May 30, 2008 9:53:49pm

lot of moonbat responses to Malkin's piece on this on stumbleupon

help?

565 dmjboose  Sat, May 31, 2008 1:27:41am

I'm going to have to put myself on the pro-mainstreaming side. From the way you're writing, Charles, I think you've got this one wrong. Let Rachel Ray do her "Hip" thing, and let the Palestinians seethe over it.

566 der_ich  Sat, May 31, 2008 1:39:25am

I've found this letter from a guy called Alfed Kluge, a representative of the Order of St John, who writes 1938 about the time when the Kaffiyeh was introduced in Jerusalem:

"Almost every morning one could find new placards, calls and orders by the insurgents. Within in a few days they enforced that the red Tarboosh [Fez, der_ich] completely disappeared as a headdress and only the scarf with a black rope circlet was worn. This is the headdress of the fellah, while the Tarboosh is the pride of the townspeople. (...) Many urged me also to wear hatta and agal. But I could not decide to do so (...). But as a distinctive mark for a German I started to wear the swastika. That satisfied most of them. (...) The police force for the enforcement of those provisions were the school boys and adolescent youngsters. Naturally they were easily enthused to do something like that, they appeared in flocks in the streets, they hit the tarboosh so they fell on the floor, burned it like a torch on a stick or destroyed the good of the shopkeepers if they did not want to close [on fridays, der_ich]. No body dared to crack down on them."

From that we know two things:
1. Well: Not all happy and peaceful with the Kaffiyeh, is it?
2. Nazism is pretty much ok for the dear Palestinians

567 eaglewingz08  Sat, May 31, 2008 4:21:46am

How about khaffiyah toilet paper and diapers. After all it's not a religious symbol, but a political symbol and the people who wear it are full of crap anyway. And if the people who wear it are a race, then Americans are a race and it would be racist for people to then burn the American flag! under this logic. But we have been told time and time again that muslims aren't a race, until it's convenient for the left to contradict itself. Moreover, I still can't see the alignment of godless atheists with muslim imperialists each supposedly would execute or outlaw the other once either got in power.

Buy che shirts.

569 BaronVonOttomatic  Sat, May 31, 2008 10:28:58am

Honestly, I can't see that the scarf RR was wearing is all that similar to the 'do rags Arafat, et al. wear. Sure, it's black and white but the pattern looks totally different.

Has anyone unfurled RR's scarf next to one of those jihad bandanna for a detailed comparison? I'd like to see a side-by-side photo of the two.

So what we need is Dunkin' Donuts to do a new ad. Imagine Mark Levin in one of his rants:

Hi, Mark Levin for Dunkin' Donuts. We've noted that International ANSWER has threatened a boycott of our products for responding to concerns by those offended by what they considered "terrorist chic" in our previous ad. Dunkin' Donuts would like those activists who are considering participating in International ANSWER's boycott to know that we welcome their participation in our democracy. But as far as our donuts go, if you're a socialist, a communist, an anarchist, an apologist for despots and dictators as many of International ANSWER's members are, we implore you--JOIN THE BOYCOTT! Our donuts are TOO DAMN GOOD FOR YOU!

Had a medium coffee, a chocolate coconut and a toasted coconut this morning on the way back from the dentist.

And I left the young man a nice tip.
