it was very heartening to talk to regular hard working people who still have pride in their heritage. they don't think being liked by jihadis is the most important thing. (i hope the tide is turning).

A new job, which keeps me busy. Don't get in here very often.

How did the Cinderella Ball go (many weeks ago)?

How sweet of you to remember!

Getting ready for it was actually more fun that the event itself. The dinner was great, but there wasn't dancing after all, and that was the whole point of going as far as I was concerned.

Still. the friend I went with, who has never paid me a compliment on my appearance as long as we've know each other, did say I looked "amazing," so that was some solace!

Anybody have any spare luggage?

{VegasRick}

I'm so sorry.

This week was my Baby Lizard's last elementary band concert, 6th grade farewell program, and 6th grade brunch for students, teachers, and parents at the country club.

It's been an emotionally wrenching week because of our immediate family's circumstances, but my dad's absence was the most noticeable. He would have been so proud of the Baby Lizard.

It made me even more aware of how much of a fool my EH is for walking away from his kids. He has not made any effort to follow up on arranging supervised visitation, and he has had NO word of them (nor they of him) for nine months.

I was a single parent for 5 years (1 girl 20 months, 1 boy 6 months) and then I met my wife, she is the most amazing person in the world. We have twin boys that just turned 12, life is so great. I am truly blessed.

{pre-Boomer Marine brat}

Thanks. All three of us are working through the issues, and we are getting better.

We live in a fairly small university town (he's a professor, and his girlfriend is a former student, half is age, who just graduated). He has lost the respect of most of our friends and acquaintances.

His girlfriend (and I'm assuming they're still together) will be going to grad school in Ohio.

She has a man who chose her over his commitment to his wife and children. He has a girl (practically--she's six years older than the Lizard in Training) who willingly slept with a married man and actively sought to break up his family.

May they be happy in the life they have chosen. They deserve each other.

Since I see the inimitable Byron at the top of the thread ... here's a great sonnet by Byron's contemporary Keats, sure to win the heart of any literate lady with its "give me love or give me death" intensity ... (notice also how this is all one single sentence ... Keats was a wizard with words) ...

Bright star, would I were steadfast as thou art--
Not in lone splendour hung aloft the night
And watching, with eternal lids apart,
Like nature's patient, sleepless Eremite,
The moving waters at their priestlike task
Of pure ablution round earth's human shores,
Or gazing on the new soft-fallen mask
Of snow upon the mountains and the moors--
No--yet still stedfast, still unchangeable,
Pillow'd upon my fair love's ripening breast,
To feel for ever its soft fall and swell,
Awake for ever in a sweet unrest,
Still, still to hear her tender-taken breath,
And so live ever--or else swoon to death.

He's such a Romantic!

Very sad life, though...

Please allow me to share a sonnet story.

Two years ago, in my American lit class, we read Longfellow's "Cross of Snow," [[Link: www.hwlongfellow.org...] about how much he missed his late wife (it was published posthumously). I challenged my students to write a sonnet in the same style: Petrarchan, some connection to nature, and three labeled examples of figurative language. To earn all the bonus points, they also had to read it to the class.

One of the goofy sophomore guys desperately needed the points. He got up to read his. I was so amazed and had chills--his sonnet was beyond reasonable expectations. It had all this lovely imagery about walking in the woods at dawn and seeing a deer,

Then he said, "BANG BANG BANG."

It was SUCH an abrupt change of mood that I just stared at him. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, I had to get in onomatopoeia for my third example of figurative language."

I think I laughed until I could barely breathe.

Man has landed on the moon, the invention of the microchip, all of the advances in medicine. We go back to work and try to limit the damage.

Moreover, these types of politicians don't hurt the most productive types (who are the kind that find ways to work the new system) nearly as much as they hurt the least productive... especially by making sure they never get the tools they need to join the ranks of the most productive. Obama may make my life more expensive and may take away many of my incentives relating to my ordinary employment, but the people he will actually harm are the poor and ignorant, because his power derives from there being more of them.

Obama's Pathetic Advice to Grads

" FOR all his soaring, hopeful rhetoric, Barack Obama chose an odd message this week to send Wesleyan's graduating seniors.
Face it, kids - he basically said - Americans are losers. Pathetic, needy dependents who can't make it without help. So forget your dreams, dear graduates. Go forth and aid your fellow deadbeats.
Never mind "The Audacity of Hope." Obama was trumpeting "The Ubiquity of Failure." "The Equality of Need." "The Endlessness of the Dole."
OK, I exaggerate - a little. Here are his actual words: "Our collective service can shape the destiny of this generation . . . Individual salvation depends on collective salvation."
That is, unless we come together and fix America's myriad flaws (like poverty, which never disappears), we're all doomed.
This went well past the standard graduation calls for community service and voluntarism. The senator chided those who seek life's material rewards: "Fulfilling your immediate wants and needs," he insisted, "betrays a poverty of ambition."
In fact, Obama himself was betraying a poverty of understanding US history.
After all, it's not too many Americans pursuing their dreams that threatens the nation's greatness - it's too few.
Obama's America has two groups: those in need - and those who care for them. Missing are the folks who produce real wealth - the goods and services all Americans enjoy.
Sure, helping others is a noble pursuit. And Obama's GOP rival, John McCain, certainly honors public service. But America's success owes much to its high regard for individualism - personal rights and responsibilities, and individual self-advancement. If Obama truly appreciated that, he might have challenged the students to dream big. And to pursue those dreams with gusto....

Lord Byron: mad, bad, and dangerous to know.

Just ask Lady Caroline Lamb.

Did you know his daughter (and his wife) were mathematical geniuses and that his daughter (ADA), is credited with helping to lay the groundwork for the eventual invention of the computer? Isn't that interesting? A film about her, called ADA, starring Tilda Swinton, was made a few years ago.

Mighty Lizard King creates the scene!

Zombie’s on the prowl again, tonight;
Leftist loons had best keep out of sight!
Cornered troll takes one last frightened gulp,
Then Sharmuta shreds it to a pulp!

Killgore Trout swims hard against the stream;
MandyManners just let loose a scream!
Song_and_dance_man’s Mr. Tambourine;
BabbaZee still vents her outraged spleen!

La de da de dee...
La de da de daa...

Fruit cup’s being served on the buffet;
Lizard Lounge is open night and day!
Trolls and mobies still get shown the door;
Nodrog doesn’t live here anymore!

And the blog goes on...
The blog goes on...

Killian Bundy legally consults;
Taxfreekiller slams the money-cults!
Puppet tries to post with sneaky nic;
Stinky Beaumont swings the whacking stick!

La de da de dee...

Karridine calls BS from the East;
Geepers serves the Midwest lizard feast!
Zulubaby watches from afar;
LGF’s Mid-Eastern guiding star!

And the blog goes on...

Callow hatchlings swallow her posts, whole!
Hapless troll takes one last living breath,
Then Nekama hammers it to death!

T-19 hours and 20 minutes.

I'm going up to Titusville to watch the Shuttle launch! It goes off at @5pm local. Saw one at night from Vero Beach a few years ago and it was amazing from that distance.

Here's the link: [Link: www.nasa.gov...]

God bless America!

Shuttle launches are impressive albeit somewhat tame. When I lived down that way a few years ago I made acquaintance with some old timers who were veterans of the Apollo days. They said that back then NASA had a whole group of people whose jobs were to go around the area after a Saturn V launch and write checks for broken windows.

The Piano Has Been Drinking

The piano has been drinking, my necktie is asleep
And the combo went back to New York, the jukebox has to take a leak
And the carpet needs a haircut, and the spotlight looks like a prison break
And the telephone's out of cigarettes, and the balcony is on the make
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking...

And the menus are all freezing, and the light man's blind in one eye
And he can't see out of the other
And the piano-tuner's got a hearing aid, and he showed up with his mother
And the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
As the bouncer is a sumo wrestler cream-puff casper milktoast
And the owner is a mental midget with the IQ of a fence post
'cause the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking...

And you can't find your waitress with a Geiger counter
And she hates you and your friends and you just can't get served without
her
And the box-office is drooling, and the bar stools are on fire
And the newspapers were fooling, and the ash-trays have retired
because the piano has been drinking, the piano has been drinking
The piano has been drinking, not me, not me, not me, not me, not me...

486 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Fri, May 30, 2008 7:11:59pm

VERY interesting article in Haarezt from a very disillusioned leftist:

For my Palestinian friends, with sadness:

I understand why you long ago came to believe that time was on your side. I understand the many factors, demographic, cultural, historic, geo-political, which have served to reinforce that belief, the strong conviction that Palestinian statehood was inevitable, inalienable - in every sense, a matter of time.

I understand why you have come to believe that the state of Israel is merely the latest in a long series of fleeting colonial episodes, that its roots are elsewhere, its strength is illusory, its endurance eroded, its spirit broken, its future dim. I understand that you believe you can wait these people out, wear them down, outfight them and out-believe them and out-populate them and, in the end, take them over.

I understand that you believe that rockets and mortars from the north, south, east, and, eventually, west, can depopulate and peel back and obliterate the borders of pre-1967 Israel until there will be no need to agree to a Jewish state on those borders, no need to compromise on refugees, Jerusalem, settlements, no need to talk, no need for self-scrutiny and reconsideration, no need to bend.

I understand that you believe that this is your right, religiously, morally, politically. I understand why you believe that you can wait.

But this month, three generations since 1948, since your Nakba, this is what I ask you to consider:

Your time is running out.

The letter is extraordinary in how clearly it places the blame on the Palestinians and how the efforts for peace on the part of the left were never matched by the PA.

When Oslo began, a friend asked me my thoughts. I told him I had tremendous misgivings and did not trust Arafat. But I also told him that for Israel to be true to her mission to seek her rightful place amongst the Nations, that we would have to take risks and the political climate of 1993 was the right time to try.

Each breach of Oslo by the Palestinians has led those on the right like me to be miserable for the terrible cost of a trust broken. For the left, those whose religion was Oslo, the emergence of a Palestinian failed terror state is a far more bitter pill. With the brief exception of the Netanyahu government (and even he went on and signed the Wye accords!) every Israeli government was pro-peace. The left beat up every Israeli government and institution, every history and every fact to try and convince Palestinians of Israeli sincerity.

It did not work because there was no reciprocal effort from the other side. When you are doing all the work, and the other guy,your supposed partner, is yelling at you and calling you names while threatening your family with violence, if what you are doing is important you will tolerate it for a while but eventually you will say 'enough.'

The left can be excoriated for hanging on to their delusions long after it made any sense to hang on to them but the goal was worthwhile and, if it had succeeded, would have changed the world. Because Israel is a strong successful society and the Palestinians weak failures, the price of failure will land where it truly belongs- on those who did not keep their end of the deal.

The lesson is that the next time around (and one day there will be another effort), the keys to success are reciprocity and societal transformation. But this is many, many years off and the Palestinians will be far worse off then.

If you guess that it's not meant to be complimentary, you guess right.

J'ai etudie francais depuis six ans.

"Derriere" does mean "behind," but as a preposition, not a noun.

I think what you meant to say is:

Le fleur-de-lis est le meme chose que le cul d'un poule.

(I've omitted accent marks.)

I posted this earlier today, but I feel like doing it again....

I grew up in a Baptist church, and we heard messages about race in Sunday School. They went like this:

Jesus loves the little children,
All the children of the world.
Red and Yellow, Black and White,
They are precious in His sight.
Jesus loves the little children
Of the world.

We are all gifts from God. He just uses assorted wrapping paper....

Amen!

I'm teaching The Kid that we're all the same color, just different shades.

'No one is above the law in Israel'

Arabs finally realize that their governments are corrupt and find something to praise Israel about, referring to Olmert being questioned by police about taking bribes. Pretty interesting story. What they don't realize is that if their governments weren't so corrupt, they wouldn't hate Israel, because they wouldn't be getting brainwashed by gov't propaganda!

"Despite my strong hatred for the Zionist regime, I have a lot of admiration and respect for this entity because there is no one above the law. In the Arab world, laws are broken every day and no one seems to care."

"I don't think we will live to see the day when the police interrogate an Arab leader for sexually harassing his secretary or receiving bribes," he wrote. "Nor will our children and grandchildren live to see that day. What happened in Israel can never happen in any Arab country."

For those who haven't read this one yet: Time to return to the first principles of conservatism?

What is the first principle of conservatism? Limited government. Our founders understood this, which is why they tightly constrained the jurisdiction of the federal government in the Constitution. Henry David Thoreau famously wrote “That government is best which governs least”, and that encapsulates what has been the overarching philosophy of conservatism as applied to governance. Furthermore, it exists in opposition to and as a counterbalance for the competing philosophy of socialism, which postulates that government improves as it governs more.
....
How did conservatives lose their way? They focused on everything but the core principle of limited government. Issues like gay marriage and mottos on coins took precedence.

Is it time for conservatives to embrace atheist hippie gurus like Thoreau? I say yes.

So true.

I thinks kids do tend to judge people in groups, not individuals. My job as a parent and teacher is to get kids to judge a person on his or her choices and actions.

They parrot, "You shouldn't judge people" because that's what they've heard since kindergarten, but in junior high it's time for them to realize that OF COURSE everyone judges everyone else--it's how we ascertain our environment. PREJUDICE and bigotry are the problems.

Conversely, I point out that if they choose to dress in certain ways and pierce everything, they can't complain about the conclusions others reach.

i agree,
something very disturbing to me was how early on in the primary races, all the republican candidates seemed to lose their center and latch onto the word 'change'.
they began to spout that word like it was the pass word to success. they fell for the msm hype abt. how obama was the messiah and our guys lost their footing and confidence and turned to look at the empty suit as though he knew something.
all the republican candidates did this. spouting the stupid meaningless word change. that was disappointing. we really need to turn and move away from false hollow liberal progressive ideas and not be swayed by the lies of the msm.

FWIW (and kids, don't try this at home), I started wearing contacts (the rigid kind) when I was 12. As gross as this sounds, there were many times I had something on one, popped it out, licked it (yes, I know, EWWWWW), and popped it back in, and I never had an infection.

I am NOT recommending that technique, but I share this hoping to put the infection risk in a kind of perspective.

I can't speak to the risk with soft lenses.

re: #563 goddessoftheclassroom

FWIW (and kids, don't try this at home), I started wearing contacts (the rigid kind) when I was 12. As gross as this sounds, there were many times I had something on one, popped it out, licked it (yes, I know, EWWWWW), and popped it back in, and I never had an infection.

I am NOT recommending that technique, but I share this hoping to put the infection risk in a kind of perspective.

I can't speak to the risk with soft lenses.

Oh, remind him to wash his hands often; cold viruses can enter the system from the hands to the eyes.

I didn't start at 12, but I did the same thing with my hard lenses. Put them in my mouth, ran them under tap water....everything you are NOT supposed to do. No infections. Guess I was lucky.

The soft ones I just tore in half a dozen times.... Then I had Lasik....

re: #556 MandyManners

Make sure you don't do the same. Record your experiences on video. Film sessions with your juniors. Treat it as if you're leaving a record of your family's legends. (Betcha' do that any way.)

Actually I'm in a completely different field now, not my choice but the collapse of the aerospace industry forced it. The one good thing is that I can DO things with the junior people now and SHOW them how it's done- not just TELL them. Pity about the manned space program though - so many missed opportunities...

Under the 'posting box' is a link for 'How to enter special characters'. All the European accented letters are there, as well as some other useful and fun stuff.

Thanks Grammy C! I'll check it out....

Glasses are not appropriate. He wears only one lens. As for the infection thing, he's getting properly schooled by me, the opthamologist, the clinical staff and the Internet.

So, one lens is plain glass. I just don't see how a seven year old can be trusted to properly wear contacts. All it takes is once to catch very evil and life changing bacteria. And yes, I know ophthalmologists, there's pictures of my retinas in a textbook somewhere, literally.

/look up intraocular injection, I've had a few of them, hold still!

Not to worry! We all enjoy 'playing' with the accented characters! Now if I could just figure out the HTML commands for upside-down.....

My eyes are watering. I know enough Latin prefixes and roots to know what "intraocular" means...

Sorry if I offended you. I'm a hard biting old man. Many years ago I lost a soldier in a car crash. The next morning all my Platoon were walking arround like zombies. I got ripped for reminding them we still had a job to do.
"Do not Go Gently" was a book written by a man who battled cancer. Today its a diffrent type of cancer that we battle. Be prepared for a hard fight.

Babba can best do 'her thing' on her own site, I think....and she's doing it wonderfully well. Let's just wish her all the best, and drop by to say 'hi' now and then....

I recently went back to the building that housed the lab I worked in for ten years testing aircraft/spacecraft systems. The company had sold it and it is now a Korean Presbyterian Church. Talk about surreal - the test cells are now offices, the equipment room is the sanctuary and the hangar (with a 50 foot high ceiling) is now the gym. Every time I recall that visit all I can think of is that line from the old song:

/...turn the page...

You don't have to have someone tell you how to contact Babba, you can look at Charles' comments and see that he himself put in a link for her site.
