Reuters: Bickering, Squabbling, Can't We Just Surrender Already?

Fri, May 30, 2008 at 7:26:04 pm PDT

Reuters is getting tired of the bickering and squabbling over small issues: Obama, McCain bicker over troop levels in Iraq.

GREAT FALLS, Montana (Reuters) - Democrat Barack Obama squabbled with Republican John McCain on Friday over the number of U.S. troops in Iraq in the latest disagreement between the two likely presidential nominees over the unpopular war.

"Squabbling?" Maybe Deborah Charles didn't learn English as a first language. Or maybe she intended to trivialize the difference of opinion.
Setting up the whole discussion as a tiresome "squabble" is dumb reporting.

A couple of years ago they ran some intentionally biased polls to elicit an answer:

"Do you approve of the way Bush is conducting the war in Iraq?"

35% of the respondents (the moonbats) said "No, we should surrender immediately!"

35% of the respondents (conservatives) said, "No, he's being a pansy: we should kick their asses and hard!"

The next day's headline:

70% of Americans Disapprove of the War

It's been an undisputed fact ever since.

Now, it makes sense for the Republicans to patiently sit on their evidence until the Democrats are committed to Obama in August. Then, come September, they'll blow little Obama away.

Let's get this straight. McCain's been the GOP nominee for how long now? In the weirdest election season ever, the "avalanche" favorite cannot truly close the door before the convention.

But please, Reuters, do anoint Senator Obama. Of all the bonehead moments we've had in this campaign, the capper will be when the demonrats select their unelectable candidate as their nominee.

By all means, go ahead. I revel in the stupidity. You want to have a convention just for show, and your favored party is so bitterly divided that you have no chance.

Don't believe me? That's your problem, not mine.

Come on, Cognito. You're just being deliberately obtuse - something you like to specialize in.

Please stop pretending to be so stupid, it's getting tiresome.

Eh. If that's all this criticism is about -- the word 'squabble' -- then I'm not going to bother getting too breathless about it.

It's not a great word, maybe. Not a sober word for a sober topic. But that's not the end of the world. Seems to me like some people here are primed to deliver swift kicks to Reuters, et al, regardless of the offense. So to speak.

I love it when the MSM uses the nomenclature "unpopular war" (as if there's such a thing as a popular war). Nobody likes war, least of all the people who have to fight it. What separates us "warmongers" from the moonbats is that we realize that war, however distasteful it is, is sometimes necessary.

Thank you for saying it just like it should be.

Candidate mentions in the story, by paragraph.
Is there a pattern in the writing?

1. Obama acting on McCain, mention of unpopular war
2. Obama acting on McCain, "unrealistic"
3. 5 year old war, unpopular, 'fiery' issue
4. McCain says surge is working
5. Obama says he's wrong
6. Snark from Obama, who has been criticized for inexperience
7. He's Wrong, Obama sez; crowd cheers!
8. Troop numbers
9. McCain campaign explains it's a question of (airquote) "tenses"
calls criticism 'nitpicking'
10. McCain asked if he misspoke, he says of course not
11. Obama accuses M of not admitting his mistake
12. Obama throws brilliant and brave troops in M's face; not nitpicking!
13. McCain was a POW, supports the war, will keep troops there until war is won
14. Obama is almost nominated, opposed war, wants troops home in 16 months.
15. McCain has been to Iraq 8 times, says Obama should go to gain experience.
16. Obama dismissed trip proposal as political stunt. He's been to Iraq.

175 mama winger  Fri, May 30, 2008 8:03:58pm

Obama has no plan to win in Iraq because he does not believe in his heart that we should win. He believes it was an illegal war and not worth fighting. He believes Al-Queda is not a threat in Iraq. To take measures to actually win would be to admit that this is a fight worth the effort. He is not going to do that. He would prefer a losing scenario because it fits his world view of the United States as an unjust aggressor.

Cognito did his utmost in this very thread to prove you 100% correct.

#167, I would like to believe that Blogs and internet should be able to do this. The problem is there is an equal amount of liberal webs that counter-act any good that comes across. It is certainly better than the past and I am hopeful. It's just it's frustrating to see this obviously flawed candidate who should not even be considered for Senator, running for the highest office in the World. It's scary.

I also read that the Dems are running out of money for their convention and are tightening their budget.

I heard that the other days. Seems the specifications they have written to the caterers and others supplying the convention are, to be kind, somewhat spendy. They are requiring that the convention be "green" (as in ecologically moon-bat approved, no as in lots of lettuce and celery and Irish folks). They have specified various requirements regarding having to be locally grown (as people in Denver point out, that isn't possible with a lot of stuff being requested for that time of year), and a whole bunch of other stuff to appear environmentally sensitive.

/probably a good preview of what they will do to the rest of us if they seize power

You know I've heard about this supposed tape of Michelle Obama ranting on tape about "whitey."How many anti-white tapes is it going to take? Look every anti-white rant and anti-American anti- Israel attack from his "mentors" has been ignored and forgiven. If something comes up in October featuring his Lovely wife yet again pointing up how mean America is, the press will likely ignore it also. Besides if they don't he can just throw her under the bus with the rest.

You know if there is such a tape he will give one of his two now well practiced speeches;
1. He never heard her talk like that in all the years they have been married---guess she only did it when he not around
2. I am so disappointed and do not agree with her words at all.

The only difference between the war in Iraq and teenage love is the odds of this going bad by pulling out are much higher in their costs.

Like Hillary's plan to celebrate her victory after Super Tuesday, Obama has no plan if his vision suddenly turns into a must-win conflict in the Middle East. That's way too forward thinking for a guy, who by all indications, really doesn't much like or have any non-predatory use for us "white people", and who believes that a global caliphate wouldn't really be all that bad a thing.

Just don't insult me by thinking I'm kidding.

I share your pessimism. The fact that liberals tend to visit only liberal sites makes it unlikely that they'll hear other POVs. Conservatives, at least those I know, tend to know a lot more about the left than the left knows about the right.

The trick is to get a video to "go viral" so that people who normally wouldn't consider any POV other than their own may actually see it.

As conservatives, we have to be more forthright and evangelistic about the way we look at the world. That's the bottom line, isn't it?

Reuters: so serious they are about reporting this war that they use terms like 'Bicker" to describe the discussion of troop deployment. Then they reduce the discussion to semantic analysis akin to Clinton at the height of his prowess (whatever the meaning of is is).

Why should anyone take organizations like Reuters seriously when they reduce news stories of major importance in to a lesson on language. Is this what Journalists would like us to think they do for a living? Were I a journalist, I'd hang my head in shame. This behavior is despicable.

Indeed.

I'd argue, though, that semantics seem to be the heart of the criticism of the Reuters lede. If there's a factual criticism being made, I haven't seen it.

And if there is a factual problem with the Reuters story, I'll be the first to line up and deliver the swift kicks. I'm just not too upset, so far, about what the news service has apparently done to offend:

1) Using 'squabble.' Not the end of civilization.

2) More pointedly, injecting 'unpopular' into the lede with no pressing reason. That's actually a much more valid criticism, I think. I've not seen it proven incorrect, but it does carry a bit of pique.

Good news is no news. :P

If only it were that simple.

Good news is big news... if a dem is in the White House.
Bad news is big news when the R's are in power.

Just yesterday, someone [Michael Yon? Tim Blair?] posted a few graphs illustrating the dramatic decline in Iraq coverage by the MSM. It fell by over 90% after the surge proved successful. That is not simply due to the "good news is no news" factor... it smells like a deliberate manipulation of public consciousness for the benefit/detriment of political parties... and their fortunes at the ballot box.

I am just scratching my head, wondering how it came.

I never thought I would see the day, where you have the Democrats in a quandary like this.

The prospect that one progressive camp, has to accuse the other progressive camp of essentially being everything they have spent blaming on Republicans over the last 40 years is too rich.

Remember, she was actually ahead of her time with her nomination.

It just amazes me, she is sitting there, bitching about things like not being able to address certain aspects of the "race"

There bitching about their own love child.

Iraqi Democracy, Two Years On

by Austin Bay

The Federalism Law, de-Baathification reforms and amnesty laws, and the Provincial Powers Act are major acts of legislation, especially when crafted, debated and passed in the midst of sensational terrorist attacks designed to shake the confidence of Iraqis and keep international media focused on conflict instead of maturing compromise.

The "war" in Iraq is over.

Operation Charge of the Knights, begun in southern Iraq in March, followed by Lion's Roar in the Mosul area, are security operations that have clearly served the larger political purposes of strengthening national support for the federal government. Kurds and Sunni Arabs expressed overwhelming support for Charge of the Knights attacks on Shia gangs. The Mosul offensive was designed to destroy al-Qaeda cells that have increasingly focused their violence on Iraqi Sunnis who have joined the political process.
Success over the last two years has been incremental -- democracies tend to work that way. There are signs, however that a democratic foundation is being built for a more secure, productive and free Iraqi future.

Not if Barry can do anything about it. Because he has a vested interest in proving himself "right" about his proclamations about the war.

The very reason you'll never hear him (or the MSM) talk of the successes in Iraq.

We see liberals as terribly misguided people. Liberals see all who disagree with them as evil, hence the name calling- fascist, nazi, etc.

Ferraro said the remarks were sexist, and racist, and Obama should leave the Church immediately. O'Reilly said Obama wasn't responsible for what they said, but she said he should be judged by the company he keeps and the fact he heard this stuff for 20 years. Here's the nut graf: "... neither the Barack Obama campaign nor the media seem to understand what is at the heart of the anger on the part of women who feel that Hillary Clinton was treated unfairly because she is a woman or what is fueling the concern of Reagan Democrats for whom sexism isn't an issue, but reverse racism is." (Italics mine.)

And her recommendation: "... a group of women - from corporate executives to academics to members of the media - have requested that the Shorenstein Center at Harvard University and others conduct a study, which we will pay for if necessary, to determine three things." These three things are 1) Did either O engage in sexist, demeaning tactics; 2) was the media fair to Clinton; 3) did the media promote rather than report.

You know, I have had a pretty stressful time for the past couple of weeks, and some more coming up for the next couple as well.

I can say, when grumpy said this is just the beginning a couple posts ago, for a fleeting moment, a genuine smile came to my face, some stress went away, and I reveled in the mental image of what that cage match might actually be.

I am smiling right now thinking about it as I type.

383 Cognito  Fri, May 30, 2008 8:42:15pm

re: #356 Noam Sayin'

Yes. I'd like you to respond.

I'd say it depends on the situation.

"Bicker" and "squabble" are objective in the sense that they don't cast a shadow on one candidate in favor of another. I mean to say, if the lede read, "John McCain wheedled an argument out of Barack Obama," or, "Barack Obama waged a campaign against John McCain's plan," there would clearly be a bias toward one candidate or the other.

Now. The argument here, as I understand it at least, is that 'squabble' and 'bicker' are biased against the war itself, because they are petty words applied to a decidedly un-petty situation. I can see that. But poor word selection isn't the worst thing, I'd say -- I thought someone might pop up with facts that prove Reuters is wrong. And that would be worth getting a little fiesty about, to my mind.

Just my opinion. And only delivered because you asked for it explicitly; I do hope we'll stick to the topic.

I agree wholeheartedly. As a Catholic who still goes to Church I am completely disgusted with that jerk. The arsehole should take off the collar and start his own Church. Oh wait, he's already done that.

He has no reason to continue as a Priest. He is only loyal to his own ego.

Now I know Catholics are desperate for more priests, but something stinks here. I think the Bishop is protecting this priest. But why?

Many are unsuspecting to journalistic bias.

It's an adjective here, an unnecessary connection there. To us, it shows their bias glaringly, but for the the unsuspecting Brit or whomever is reading it, the intent is to chip away and sway public opinion.

Journalistic bias must be a contributing factor to this:

Just my opinion. I'm sure everyone will return to the topic, now.

I think that is one of the biggest problems with this article---when they use such petty words when talking about two candidates for POTUS talking about National Security and their plans for the war. Using these types of words makes it seem that it is unimportant and it should be very important to every voter.

Look at it from their perspective: you were holding it at their level, so you were obviously offering it to them.

That pretty much explains it. If they can grab it its rightfully theirs.

new•speak ('nü-"spEk, 'nyü-), noun, Usage: often capitalized. : propagandistic language marked by euphemism, circumlocution, and the inversion of customary meanings. Etymology: Newspeak, a language "designed to diminish the range of thought," in the novel 1984 (1949) by George Orwell. Date: 1950

Is not the constant twisting of words by Reuters, AP, APF, etc. the doubleplusnewspeak (to borrow a phrase). McCain did not argue persuasively with facts - He squabbled (of course, b/c that is what senile, grumpy old men do - they squabble). And this "unpopular" war, hyperbolic turn of a phrase. I can't imagine how popular WWII was when we landed in Normandy. And really, other than anti-social losers, who wants to be unpopular? The use of the word alone should make any article suspect. Like talking about a popular earthquake or hurricane.

The media is full on behind this guy. Obama poses a grave threat to this country and he has the "information providers" running interference for him.
And on the other end of the spectrum we have people whining that McCain isn't conservative enough and he wont say this or do that and even if he did it wouldn't mean what they think it should mean, yada yada yada..
You could run a potted plant against Obama and I would be sending it cash, arguing for it and putting a "potted plant 08" sticker on my car.

I am really, really concerned about the future of the country.

Hell yes. My husband is in the sandbox right now. It just chaps my hide when supposed "conservatives" think they're being cute with their fantasies that electing Obama will lead to some great True Conservative awakening in 2012. Dammit, that won't help people like my husband whose lives would be hugely endangered by Obama as POTUS.

Oh....and we interupt our regularly scheduled program to present a word from the women closest to holding the greatest power on earth:

PELOSI: Some of the success of the surge is at the goodwill of the Iranians. They decided in Basra when the fighting would end. They negotiated that cessation of hostilities. The Iranians!

Any Americans who sacrificed themselves for the surge did so in vain...the Iranians accomplished what we couldn't so lets give Iraq to them! AND of course they did it with NEGOTIATION.

/we now rejoin our regular programming schedule.

YES! I agree completely. This "real conservative" in 2012, can still happen and Obama can be defeated in 08. They are not mutually exclusive, and McCain is a far better alternative to Hussein

Expect we will be headed into Nebraska if we don't go to Belville KS.
If you meant the name of the OK town, don't remember, it was the onw with the old mine tailings ruining the environment.

Picher, OK? That's the old mining town that was hit by the tornado a few weeks ago.

When the planes hit the towers, how popular was that?

Cognito is so nuanced.

485 jemima  Sat, May 31, 2008 4:54:14am

Unpopular war.

The murder of American citizens on American soil is so much more preferable. Surrender now and avoid the rush.

486 PatrioticNaturalizedAmerican  Sat, May 31, 2008 5:23:27am

They'd never refer to the Democrat-controlled Congress as "the unpopular Congress", even though it's less popular than the war.

487 Shane  Sat, May 31, 2008 8:32:07am

I believe in life we are given lessons. If we don't learn these lessons we get them again and they are harsher. We will continue to get this lesson until we learn it and each time the lesson will be tougher. 9/11 we lost 3000 people. What will our next lesson be? I believe the lesson is that we have to win. We lost Vietnam, 1 million died when we left. How many will die when we leave Iraq? How many will they kill the next time in a terrorist attack?

The democrat party does not think America is exceptional and they want to see us destroyed. They want this so they can claim that capitalism is bad and slavery(socialism) of the people is good. They have been doing this since the first WW. Absolutely since Korea. We aren't learning. We need to crush the democrats. If not the next lesson is going to be very painful.

I've never heard the term Democrat controlled to refer to the Congress since the D's took over. Has anybody else? But it was Republican controlled every night for years.

re: #330 Racer X

Do you recall those Family Guy segments where Peter Griffin is fighting the Giant Chicken Mascot? (20th Century Fox pulled the clips off YouTube! Drat and doubledrat, to quote Dick Dastardly.) If you recall Peter vs. Chicken, that's the image I get with your description of Clinton vs. Obama. It's senseless, and it goes on way too long--so long that it's funny, it stops being funny, and it starts being funny again!

Damn your politics, Seth MacFarlane.
