Saturday Early Morning Open

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 3:28:55 am PDT

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Emily Dickinson

Good morning to you as well. I've interested a publisher with my synopsis, the ed. in chief asked to see more, sent them that, and now they want the full manuscript to make a final judgment. They've got nerve and I hope it goes through, but if it doesn't, I'll get it out there myself. Thanks for asking.

How many of y'all got a McCain bumpersticker in the mail? He's giving them away in his latest direct mail fundraiser.

Some "creative genius" thought that the black and white W stickers looked good, so McCain's are black ovals with white text.

There is nothing worse than trying to read, especially poetry, with a tune that will not get out of your head.

I used to have trouble with the theme to "A Summer Place" (1959) by Max Steiner. Maybe because it showed up on Monty Python's Flying Circus so often. Or because when I was a little squirt between one and two, it was playing on the radio constantly. Nice tune- still drove me nuts.

When I was in AV in high school, we used to have to try to do voiceovers for slide shows in the AV room, which was right across a typical narrow companionway from the mimeo room. Open door, open counter window, and the machine going nonstop ten feet away. Our tapes all sounded like they were being done on the Chicago Tribune's printing floor. Or maybe next to a roadcrew tearing up pavement with a jackhammer.

bambambambambambam, etc.

I've often wondered if Bill Griffith of "Zippy" fame was ever an AV assistant in school. Because I'll swear that at least once a week, somebody in AV asked the infamous question,

"Are we having fun yet?"

The answer always being, "No, not really."

Well, since this is an open thread, (what the heck am I doing being up at this hour!?)...
A friend e-mailed me the following...

to help ease the pain of your next trip to the pump...
Compare with Gasoline......
Think a gallon of gas is expensive?
This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.
Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ....... $10.32 per gallon
Starbucks Coffee Grande ........ $7.00 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 .......$9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ........ $10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ........ $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8..35 .... $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 ... $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ......... $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ...... $84.48 per gallon
And this is the REAL KICKER...
Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon?! $21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)
So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, or God forbid, Pepto Bismol or Nyquil

In the context of the current campaign, black and white is perhaps not the best design choice.

It connotes several things to me, but primarily:

"McCain is a continuation of W (but even softer, with the rounded shape)"
"McCain is serious/somber (possibly even funereal)"
"McCain is conservative/old (in trying to be hip with a design from four years ago, rather than find something new)"

Shaky, this is a "feel good" list put out by our OPEC-loving representatives in Congress. There's a reason apple juice and water are sold in 12 or 16 oz bottles...that's all we drink, and we spend $1.50. Cars take gas by the gallon for a reason as well. Don't fall for silly emails like this that "put it in perspective", and demand better from your congressmen.

rhyming has kinda gone out of style among the modern poets, but the common man still expects poetry to rhyme
like this:

The CHRC Ad Campaign
(a poem of political satire)
(director’s cut)

In hopes of increasing our brand recognition,
Here’s a message from the Canadian Human Rights Commission

We can settle diputes between all the religions
The CHRC

It’s neither mission creep nor a creepy mission,
We’re the CHRC

Wanna smoke dope on someone’s porch without their permission?
The CHRC

Are your new genitalia out of position?
Call the CHRC

Uncertain the distinction between
poachin’ and fishin’?
Why not let us decide,
We’re the Rights Commission

Our jobs are many, for we are legion
The CHRC

Our mandate is fairness, we won’t be swayed
Whoever’s in office, we still get payed
We’re above fickle voters and crass politicians
The CHRC

We can screen, for Editors, every “submission”
The CHRC

No minority ever again need cancel their subscription
When all content is pre-approved by the CHRC

Have you, as a suspect suffered international rendition?
Perhaps we can help, the CHRC

And now the police won’t hire you? Why, that’s discrimination!
Call us right away: The CHRC!

Now some may think we are over-inquisitive
Or that answering our questions is cost-prohibitive
But hey it sure beats a bar fight and loss of dentition
Why not settle your dispute with the HRC

We help keep diverse cultures behaving communal
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunals

Serve food, without washing, after using the urinal?
We concur!
And we’re the Human Rights Tribunal

We adjudicate all important matters cartoonal
The CHRT

Don’t you dare imply any of our clients are buffoonal
That’s against their rights, and you’ll face our tribunal

but we’re ready for a flood of complaints, monsoonal
The Royal We, The CHRT

No....always been proud, unlike Michelle my Belle.

Remember going with my daughter to a girl scout event at the local art museum. All these posters from that era from an artist that hated America but was paid by the Works Projects of the times...talk about socialism. Anyway, the man describing the collection went over the top about all of it and what it depicted and all I kept repeating from the back of the room was that this "art" was socialist propoganda...the union manifested to a work of art.

This is how they have infiltrated the minds of our children....

This isn't Dickinson, but what the hell:

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and think of dirty things
Of deviant dwarfs who suck their toes
and elves who drub their dings.

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and dream exotic dreams
Of dragons who dress in rubber clothes
and trolls who do it in teams,

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and wish for a thrill or two
For a goblin who goes in for a few no-nos
Or an orc with a thing about glue.

And all of the while I sit and pick
I think of such jolly things
Of whips and screws and leather slacks
Of frottages and stings.

According to Dershowitz, Israel’s enemies fall into two categories: those who would attack it militarily, like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; and those who would attack it morally, economically, and politically, like Jimmy Carter and professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, American academics of what he called the "hard left." He devotes the first two chapters of his book to the work of these three men.

"It is necessary for me to expose the fallacies of Carter’s attack against Israel. It hurts me to go negative on Carter, but it has to be done," he said.

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

I just filled up my mid-size car in Toronto for $78.50 (approx. $4.65/US Gallon).
$4/gallon is very cheap compared to Europe ($8+/gal) and even in Canada consumers pay much more.
Now doesn't that make you feel better?
If it doesn't, don't worry - Obama will renegotiate NAFTA to make sure U.S. consumers get hosed worse than Canadians and maybe even as much as Europeans.

Intereting piece in the WSJ yesterday.

The President Has Kept Us Safe

With President Bush-bashing still a national pastime, it's notable how much international terrorism has been forgotten, and how little credit the president has received for keeping Americans safe.

Some reflection on what it was like after 9/11 :

Each American city adopted its own visions of trauma. There were new categories of vulnerable public spaces. Our worst terrorism nightmares were projected onto local landmarks: Rodeo Drive, the Sears Tower, the French Quarter, River Walk, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Space Needle. Suddenly, living in rural, outlying areas seemed like a sensible lifestyle choice.

OMG, Rodeo Drive ! Unconscionable ! The last bastion of civilization ! UNITE !

We all waited for terrorism's second shoe to drop, and, seven years later . . . nothing has happened.

All this time Americans have been safe from suicide bombers, biological warfare and collapsing skyscrapers, while the rest of the world has been on red alert. And yet President Bush is regarded as the worst president in American history? Sorry, I must be missing something here.

That's an amazing admission. I'm impressed. But,

Yes, there are those who maintain that our promiscuous misadventures in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel have rendered America even less safe. That the president has further radicalized our enemies and alienated our nation. That the animosity for America now, improbably, runs even deeper. Whatever resentments and aspirations gave rise to 9/11 have grown and will not be easily dissipated. For this reason, no one should draw comfort in the relative safety of our shores.

Maybe so. But when a professed enemy succeeds as wildly as al Qaeda did on 9/11, and seven years pass without an incident, there are two reasonable conclusions: Either, despite all the trash-talking videos, they have been taking a long, leisurely breather; or, something serious has been done to thwart and disable their operations. Whatever combination of psychology and insanity motivates a terrorist to blow himself up is not within my range of experience, but I'm betting the aggressive measures the president took, and the unequivocal message he sent, might have had something to do with it.

But in gearing up to elect a new president, we are left to wonder how, in spite of numerous failed policies and poor judgement, President Bush's greatest achievement was denied to him by people who ungratefully availed themselves of the protection that his administration provided.

It IS an amazing fact that we have not been attacked since 9/11.

Gas Taxes in the US are flat, federal and in my state both are a fixed number of cents per gallon. This is why states get in trouble when gas goes up, they get less revenue, unlike sales tax where price increases increase revenue.

Okay, I have a thought on this. It's probably a good case of wishful thinking, but hear me out:

Part of me thinks that Dean and the other leadership of the Democrat party simply can't be as full of BDS as their constituents, because they have to have a head on their shoulders in order to reach the leadership levels. Which means their posturing and speeches are all fake, just to keep their constituents happy. Which also makes them two-faced cretins.

We were in NYC for a few days at the beginning of May. Daughter was there for a medical conference and I was there to watch grandson. We didn't get to do a lot but on her one off day we went to Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty. Grandson (5) had a blast. He kept saying we were seeing "The REAL Statue of Liberty". He had read a book about NYC with his mom and the Statue of Liberty really impressed him. We had to buy him a 12 inch miniature and he carried it everywhere. He can't help but be a Conservative.

274 DistantThunder  Sat, May 31, 2008 7:37:09am

Why I Can't Vote for MCCain

But McCain is an officer, and he remained an officer under years of torture, and he unconsciously understands the US Congress as an officer corps. This tragic misunderstanding of the political structures of our nation is the key to why he behaves as he does. Officers must be honest with each other, and officers must command. In order to command, they must rely on each other. This understanding and relationship must be defended against everything, because even if the current goal of command is mistaken, the chain of command must hold in order to get the best outcome for their men. McCain wouldn't be subverted by years of torture because he understood that to say what they wanted could become an weapon used against thousands and hundreds of thousands of his fellow military men, and he would not become that weapon. If anyone tried to instill democratic principles in the Armed Forces, what we'd get out of it would be a bunch of dead soldiers.

McCain believes that the chatter of democracy is a corrupter of the trust and mutual responsibility that representatives and senators ought to hold and execute with each other. Therefore, he is very sincerely dedicated to trying to eradicate the worst features of that chatter. He doesn't understand that this cannot be done without eradicating the best features of it. This is the last man on earth who ought to be picking Supreme Court nominees.

The political construct which the Armed Forces are sworn to defend is very different. Every once in a while in human history an institution will emerge that has true potential to improve the prospects of the human race. English Common Law is one such, and the US Constitution is another. The purpose of the US Constitution is to prevent a top-down, officer-like political structure from emerging, in order to ensure that commands radiate up from the population rather than down from an elite. McCain does not understand that. He's a man who deserves the respect, honor and praise of his countrymen, but to put him in the presidency would be a tragic error.

Iran says its right to enrichment is non-negotiable

TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran will not give up its right to enrich uranium, a senior Iranian official said on Saturday, days before major powers submit an upgraded package of incentives to try to coax Tehran into halting the work.

OR, I am pretty sure they are using their IR(Infrared) lasers and lights, which can only be seen with Night Vision.

The enemy, if they don't have night vision, can't see either the lasers or the lights, and they are also probbly using Thermal Imaging, which can also see the enemy without being seen.

Col. H. R. McMaster on Charlie Rose last night. Interesting guy, of course. Very smart, but - you wonder what more he might say, out of uniform and over a few beers. Anyway, he put a LOT of weight on the Iranians as causing both past and ongoing trouble in Iraq, and just as per McCain, McMaster suggested the Iranians support both sides because they like the chaos. Interesting to see if McCain picks up on that - though I wonder if it's also in any of Petreus' public comments.

The Iranians stand to gain the most. They read the papers and listen to Reid and Pelousy and the Obamessiah. If they can keep the perception of violence on the front page and do anything to help BHO win. After the withdrawal they have the best position to exert the most influence if not out right take over Iraq. Iranians have not forgotten history, restoring the Old Persian Empire would garner them a lot of support at home.

And since this thread begins with a poem, here are some lyrics:

All of the riverboat gamblers are losing their shirts
All of the brave union soldier boys sleep in the dirt
But you know and I know there never was reason to hurt
When all of our lives were entwined to begin with
Here in Spoon River

All of the calico dresses, the gingham and lace
Are up in the attic with grandfather's derringer case
There's words whispered down in the parlor, a shadowy face
The morning is heavy with one more beginning
Here in Spoon River

Come to the dance Mary Perkins I like you right well
The union's preserved, if you listen you'll hear all the bells
There must be a heaven, God knows I've seen mostly hell
My rig is outside, come and ride through the evening
Here in Spoon River

Not at all. The circuits and the Supreme Court are independent of each other as to how many justices sit on each.

I'm suggesting breaking up the Ninth into three distinct new districts.

Each would be based on existing 9th circuit caselaw, but would be able to go forward with its own interpretations. More efficiency, and perhaps a court that is less likely to get overturned by the Supreme Court because it is more in tune with the rest of the country.

OK, I'm watching the DNC Rules Committee fiasco on C-SPAN in the background...and after Senator Nelson (FL) gave his speech, one of the committee members asked a question prefacing it with "...and we all know, not all voters are created equal..." To Nelson's credit, he basically called 'bullshit' on her premise.

wow. I know they think that way, but to say it out loud in front of a camera, on a day when more than the normal number of people (like me) are watching this OGF...

I'm suggesting breaking up the Ninth into three distinct new districts.

With 57 states, we need it.

Supremely ironic to watch the DNC after hearing all the complaining (for years) about the 2002 general election.

Hahaha! pmsnbc and cnn showing the moonbats live. That could backfire. Not too many people watch c-span. As this goes on the passion will get higher. Bill Nelson lost his temper a little bit. This could be fun. Fox is sticking with its normal programming.

Morning! Did you consume some adult beverage last nite? The wife found a malt beverage by parrot bay, orange pineapple and when it is hot outside it is deadly. Goes down like orange pop!

I think Israeli nuclear retaliation against the Iranians is supposed to "bring forth" the 12th Imam - the Mahdi in the Well.

Wouldn't it be a little more practical just to drop him a rope?

You'd think that sometime in the last 1,140 years, someone would have thought of that, but nooooooo!

He's been sleeping in so long, only Armageddon will wake his ass up.

re: #386 jcm

Musta been Rick, never heard of it. Which don't mean shit. There are a lot of micro brews out there that aren't really micro but are specific to a local area. A lot of these beers are made by folks who got tired of bud, miller, etc... and said hey we can brew better than the big boys. Quality is definetly better. Hell even at the local safeway there is at least 2 dozen smaller breweries in the beer case.

Hope was the last thing found at the bottom of the emptied Pandora's Box.

It may have been meant ironcially as the final plague.

And a bit of Blake:

"He who binds to himself a joy
Does the winged life destroy;
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in eternity's sun rise.
"

Thank you. It is often what I feel like, with the disparity of what I read here on lgf, and on the news sites, yet see the peacefulness about me in "real life" here in my neighborhood --even though watching the huge leaps of encroachment by the Muslim population surrounding me........as far as I can "see" with my physical eyes, there is little that is actually "bad", 'ceptin' them not engaging in conversation with me, and often, 'specially on Friday afternoons, not even meeting my eyes.....
