Saturday Early Morning Open

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 3:28:55 am PDT

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Emily Dickinson

Good morning to you as well. I've interested a publisher with my synopsis, the ed. in chief asked to see more, sent them that, and now they want the full manuscript to make a final judgment. They've got nerve and I hope it goes through, but if it doesn't, I'll get it out there myself. Thanks for asking.

How many of y'all got a McCain bumpersticker in the mail? He's giving them away in his latest direct mail fundraiser.

Some "creative genius" thought that the black and white W stickers looked good, so McCain's are black ovals with white text.

There is nothing worse than trying to read, especially poetry, with a tune that will not get out of your head.

I used to have trouble with the theme to "A Summer Place" (1959) by Max Steiner. Maybe because it showed up on Monty Python's Flying Circus so often. Or because when I was a little squirt between one and two, it was playing on the radio constantly. Nice tune- still drove me nuts.

When I was in AV in high school, we used to have to try to do voiceovers for slide shows in the AV room, which was right across a typical narrow companionway from the mimeo room. Open door, open counter window, and the machine going nonstop ten feet away. Our tapes all sounded like they were being done on the Chicago Tribune's printing floor. Or maybe next to a roadcrew tearing up pavement with a jackhammer.

bambambambambambam, etc.

I've often wondered if Bill Griffith of "Zippy" fame was ever an AV assistant in school. Because I'll swear that at least once a week, somebody in AV asked the infamous question,

"Are we having fun yet?"

The answer always being, "No, not really."

Well, since this is an open thread, (what the heck am I doing being up at this hour!?)...
A friend e-mailed me the following...

to help ease the pain of your next trip to the pump...
Compare with Gasoline......
Think a gallon of gas is expensive?
This makes one think, and also puts things in perspective.
Diet Snapple 16 oz $1.29 ....... $10.32 per gallon
Starbucks Coffee Grande ........ $7.00 per gallon
Lipton Ice Tea 16 oz $1.19 .......$9.52 per gallon
Gatorade 20 oz $1.59 ..... $10.17 per gallon
Ocean Spray 16 oz $1.25 ........ $10.00 per gallon
Brake Fluid 12 oz $3.15 ........ $33.60 per gallon
Vick's Nyquil 6 oz $8..35 .... $178.13 per gallon
Pepto Bismol 4 oz $3.85 ... $123.20 per gallon
Whiteout 7 oz $1.39 ......... $25.42 per gallon
Scope 1.5 oz $0.99 ...... $84.48 per gallon
And this is the REAL KICKER...
Evian water 9 oz $1.49..........$21.19 per gallon?! $21.19 for WATER - and the buyers don't even know the source. (Evian spelled backwards is Naive.)
So, the next time you're at the pump, be glad your car doesn't run on water, Scope, or Whiteout, or God forbid, Pepto Bismol or Nyquil

In the context of the current campaign, black and white is perhaps not the best design choice.

It connotes several things to me, but primarily:

"McCain is a continuation of W (but even softer, with the rounded shape)"
"McCain is serious/somber (possibly even funereal)"
"McCain is conservative/old (in trying to be hip with a design from four years ago, rather than find something new)"

Shaky, this is a "feel good" list put out by our OPEC-loving representatives in Congress. There's a reason apple juice and water are sold in 12 or 16 oz bottles...that's all we drink, and we spend $1.50. Cars take gas by the gallon for a reason as well. Don't fall for silly emails like this that "put it in perspective", and demand better from your congressmen.

rhyming has kinda gone out of style among the modern poets, but the common man still expects poetry to rhyme
like this:

The CHRC Ad Campaign
(a poem of political satire)
(director’s cut)

In hopes of increasing our brand recognition,
Here’s a message from the Canadian Human Rights Commission

We can settle diputes between all the religions
The CHRC

It’s neither mission creep nor a creepy mission,
We’re the CHRC

Wanna smoke dope on someone’s porch without their permission?
The CHRC

Are your new genitalia out of position?
Call the CHRC

Uncertain the distinction between
poachin’ and fishin’?
Why not let us decide,
We’re the Rights Commission

Our jobs are many, for we are legion
The CHRC

Our mandate is fairness, we won’t be swayed
Whoever’s in office, we still get payed
We’re above fickle voters and crass politicians
The CHRC

We can screen, for Editors, every “submission”
The CHRC

No minority ever again need cancel their subscription
When all content is pre-approved by the CHRC

Have you, as a suspect suffered international rendition?
Perhaps we can help, the CHRC

And now the police won’t hire you? Why, that’s discrimination!
Call us right away: The CHRC!

Now some may think we are over-inquisitive
Or that answering our questions is cost-prohibitive
But hey it sure beats a bar fight and loss of dentition
Why not settle your dispute with the HRC

We help keep diverse cultures behaving communal
The Canadian Human Rights Tribunals

Serve food, without washing, after using the urinal?
We concur!
And we’re the Human Rights Tribunal

We adjudicate all important matters cartoonal
The CHRT

Don’t you dare imply any of our clients are buffoonal
That’s against their rights, and you’ll face our tribunal

but we’re ready for a flood of complaints, monsoonal

No....always been proud, unlike Michelle my Belle.

Remember going with my daughter to a girl scout event at the local art museum. All these posters from that era from an artist that hated America but was paid by the Works Projects of the times...talk about socialism. Anyway, the man describing the collection went over the top about all of it and what it depicted and all I kept repeating from the back of the room was that this "art" was socialist propoganda...the union manifested to a work of art.

This is how they have infiltrated the minds of our children....

This isn't Dickinson, but what the hell:

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and think of dirty things
Of deviant dwarfs who suck their toes
and elves who drub their dings.

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and dream exotic dreams
Of dragons who dress in rubber clothes
and trolls who do it in teams,

I sit on the floor and pick my nose
and wish for a thrill or two
For a goblin who goes in for a few no-nos
Or an orc with a thing about glue.

And all of the while I sit and pick
I think of such jolly things
Of whips and screws and leather slacks
Of frottages and stings.

Dershowitz is going to skewer President Peanut in his new book:

Dershowitz, in Teaneck, makes the case against Carter

According to Dershowitz, Israel’s enemies fall into two categories: those who would attack it militarily, like Hamas, Hezbollah, and the president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad; and those who would attack it morally, economically, and politically, like Jimmy Carter and professors John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, American academics of what he called the "hard left." He devotes the first two chapters of his book to the work of these three men.

"It is necessary for me to expose the fallacies of Carter’s attack against Israel. It hurts me to go negative on Carter, but it has to be done," he said.

It is all Bush
He went to war for the oil and screwed it up
That is what the Code Pink has been telling us for years
We are just to dumb to listen
The left does not care about the Iraqis or the soldiers
They want cheap oil
And Bush screwed it up

Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.

I’ve heard it in the chilliest land
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.

Ya know, if the Iraq War was a "War for Oil," why the frak are we paying $4+ for a gallon of gas?

I just filled up my mid-size car in Toronto for $78.50 (approx. $4.65/US Gallon).
$4/gallon is very cheap compared to Europe ($8+/gal) and even in Canada consumers pay much more.
Now doesn't that make you feel better?
If it doesn't, don't worry - Obama will renegotiate NAFTA to make sure U.S. consumers get hosed worse than Canadians and maybe even as much as Europeans.

Intereting piece in the WSJ yesterday.

The President Has Kept Us Safe

With President Bush-bashing still a national pastime, it's notable how much international terrorism has been forgotten, and how little credit the president has received for keeping Americans safe.

Some reflection on what it was like after 9/11 :

Each American city adopted its own visions of trauma. There were new categories of vulnerable public spaces. Our worst terrorism nightmares were projected onto local landmarks: Rodeo Drive, the Sears Tower, the French Quarter, River Walk, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Space Needle. Suddenly, living in rural, outlying areas seemed like a sensible lifestyle choice.

OMG, Rodeo Drive ! Unconscionable ! The last bastion of civilization ! UNITE !

We all waited for terrorism's second shoe to drop, and, seven years later . . . nothing has happened.

All this time Americans have been safe from suicide bombers, biological warfare and collapsing skyscrapers, while the rest of the world has been on red alert. And yet President Bush is regarded as the worst president in American history? Sorry, I must be missing something here.

That's an amazing admission. I'm impressed. But,

Yes, there are those who maintain that our promiscuous misadventures in Iraq, Afghanistan and Israel have rendered America even less safe. That the president has further radicalized our enemies and alienated our nation. That the animosity for America now, improbably, runs even deeper. Whatever resentments and aspirations gave rise to 9/11 have grown and will not be easily dissipated. For this reason, no one should draw comfort in the relative safety of our shores.

Maybe so. But when a professed enemy succeeds as wildly as al Qaeda did on 9/11, and seven years pass without an incident, there are two reasonable conclusions: Either, despite all the trash-talking videos, they have been taking a long, leisurely breather; or, something serious has been done to thwart and disable their operations. Whatever combination of psychology and insanity motivates a terrorist to blow himself up is not within my range of experience, but I'm betting the aggressive measures the president took, and the unequivocal message he sent, might have had something to do with it.

But in gearing up to elect a new president, we are left to wonder how, in spite of numerous failed policies and poor judgement, President Bush's greatest achievement was denied to him by people who ungratefully availed themselves of the protection that his administration provided.

It IS an amazing fact that we have not been attacked since 9/11.

I think it is because, simply put, he does not believe that "America Sucks". Why the left does believe that "America Sucks" is IMHO a much more interesting question and one whose answer, again IMHO, has it's roots in Cold War era KGB "Active Measures".

Other quick hits:
Musing on breaking up the Ninth circuit - too large, too many cases, and too many cases overturned by the US Supreme Court says that they're not getting the law right.

Who's advising Obama? Well, folks who are still in love with appeasement and unilateral disarmament in the face of a threat that has no intention to ever do so willingly.

The Chinese are still dealing with the aftereffects of that massive quake. Hundreds of thousands are forced to flee areas that might be hit by floods due to landslides blocking rivers.

And lastly, but certainly not least, the DNC is going to attempt to avoid a civil war by trying to figure out what to do with MI and FL. Count every vote? Heh. Not.Gonna.Happen.

Gateway Pundit found this appalling story of a little kid murdered in religious school by his teacher because he didn't do well enough in Koran memorization. The teacher hanged him from the ceiling fan. The Pak authorities promptly arrested the teacher.

However, the BBC story has an stunningly insensitive photo of a Koran class taken Point-Of-View the ceiling fan! You have to see it to believe it.
