Sat, May 31, 2008 at 10:50:37 am PDT

Another mysterious blast at the residence of a terrorist; do you think maybe they’re hiding explosives in their houses? Palestinian killed in Gaza house blast: medics.

GAZA CITY (AFP) - A Palestinian was killed and another 16 were wounded on Saturday in an early morning explosion at a house owned by a Hamas member in Gaza City, medics and witnesses said.

Dr. Muawiya Hassanein, the head of Gaza emergency services, confirmed the incident, adding that medics had not yet identified the person who died.

Witnesses said the house belonged to Nadir Abu Shaaban, a member of the Islamist Hamas movement which has ruled Gaza for nearly a year.

Here's something disturbing, from the AP via Yahoo:

Al-Qaida's stance on women sparks extremist debate

[Extremist debate? Heh. Is there an Anarchy Steering Committee, too?]

CAIRO, Egypt - Muslim extremist women are challenging al-Qaida's refusal to include — or at least acknowledge — women in its ranks, in an emotional debate that gives rare insight into the gender conflicts lurking beneath one of the strictest strains of Islam.

In response to a female questioner, al-Qaida No. 2 leader Ayman Al-Zawahri said in April that the terrorist group does not have women. A woman's role, he said on the Internet audio recording, is limited to caring for the homes and children of al-Qaida fighters.

So, which is it? A strict strain of Islam? A terrorist group? What are you trying to say? Is the AP linking Islam and terrorism? Islamophobes!

Falling concrete after an American bombing or attack. I wasn't clear. Oops!

/and the English invented concrete, so it's their fault.

In 1756, British engineer, John Smeaton made the first modern concrete (hydraulic cement) by adding pebbles as a coarse aggregate and mixing powered brick into the cement. In 1824, English inventor, Joseph Aspdin invented Portland Cement, which has remained the dominant cement used in concrete production.

After watching his sister try three times to win the Scripps Nationals Spelling Bee, Sameer Mishra put himself on a mission. "I told my mom I was going to do the bee," Sameer said. "And if I was going to do it, I was going to win it one day. And I guess it happened."
...
Appearing in the bee for the fourth time and a top 20 finisher the last two years, Sameer clenched both fists and put his hands to his face after spelling the winning word. He won a tense duel over first-time participant Sidharth Chand, 12, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., who finally stumbled on "prosopopoeia," a word describing a type of figure of speech.

That only applies to the relatively rare coral snake found in Florida, which has neurotoxin venom. Nearly all poisonous snakes in the US have circulatory toxins, and some of them are fairly dangerous. I view the eastern diamondback as probably the most dangerous American snake due to its open aggression and speed. But a number of pygmy rattlers of the desert southwest are much more toxic and lethal if you are unfortunate enough to be bitten by one.

It's not just that an Indian won the spelling bee: if you look at the top finishers, the runner-up was also Indian, as was the fourth-place finisher, and so on. In fact, I think there were 8 Indian kids in the top 15. Unbelievable! Especially considering how comparatively small the Indian community is in the US. And the competition is purely merit-based. Statistically, there should be just one Indian finalist in the top 100. And yet every year, they dominate the top slots.

How could this be? Are Indians just extraordinarily good at spelling, or is it just an obsessive stage-parent hobby in the Indian community? (I.e. is it nature or nurture?)

Inquiring minds want to know.

Lots of home-schoolers represented too. I think the common factor is parent involvement.

Well, the coral snake and those snakes that look LIKE it, but where red and yellow don't touch.

I also go with "If it has a rattle, run like hell". And probably a few others. ;-)

Never run when you hear a rattle. Back off slowly because it's likely that other rattlers are in the area, and just rushing past one is likely to get you bit. One-fourtieth of a second for a strike.
