Breaking: Obama Throws Church Under Bus!

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 3:29:23 pm PDT

Now the headline at CNN.com:

Barack Obama has resigned as a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, his campaign says.

He’s doing it on a Saturday afternoon to try to avoid as much media frenzy as possible.

UPDATE at 5/31/08 3:58:19 pm:

Why isn’t this the leading story on the cable channels? Is “Sex and the City” more important — or is it the DNC meeting?

UPDATE at 5/31/08 4:05:42 pm:

Fox News has their bidirectional scrolling yellow emergency! banner going now.

At the risk of repeating myself,

Is this supposed to be one of Obama's patented shrewd political moves? Pitching some of your most ardent supporters over the rail on the eve of your coronation? Claiming what? They've changed? He's changed? He never knew what was going on there? I don't see how he comes out of this looking like anything other than a charlatan or a moron. Not that those are mutually exclusive.

23 astronmr20  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:33:00pm

Notice when and how this was done.

No big speech, done on a Saturday.. (day before Sunday which is another chance for a stark-raving mad racist preacher to say something else), and remember Saturday is the dead-zone for news cycles. No pundit shows waiting to pounce... no H&C, no Glenn Beck, no talk radio.

And as another lizard pointed out in the last thread, the media is transfixed with the dem process itself at this point.

24 DesertSage  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:33:08pm

26 Ornery Ballsack  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:33:12pm

From Barry's Philly speech:

"Some will see this as an attempt to justify or excuse comments that are simply inexcusable. I can assure you it is not. I suppose the politically safe thing would be to move on from this episode and just hope that it fades into the woodwork"

From Jeremiah Wright's appearance at the NPC:

"Politicians say what they say and do what they do based on electability, based on sound bites, based on polls -- Huffington, whoever's doing the polls."

/It does seem like Jeremiah Wright is MORE believable than Barry.

27 godfrey  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:33:15pm

30 Just_A_Grunt  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:34:00pm

Too little, too late. You can't flush 20 years of participation in the church down the drain and walk away from it. There is no doubt the philosophy, teachings, and impact of what he learned sitting in those pews and associating with that crowd will forever taint him and his thinking.
I can't throw away 20 years of military service as if it didn't happen and he can't just walk away from this either, especially since it was during a phase of his life, from age 20 something to present, which forms our character.

Membership in Trinity United Church was his main defense against accusations of still being a Muslim. "Hey, I'm a church-goer, so I can't be a Muslim, can I?"

Now that he's quit that church, he has no religious affiliation at all.

When was the last time we had a completely non-relgious/unaffiliated president?

Hell, even the Clintons would walk around with "show bibles" every Sunday, at least pretending to be religious.

To think this won't get media attention because it's Saturday afternoon just goes to show how unsavvy obama is. First of all- the rules of the media game have changed. Bad idea to pull this the day before the Sunday shows. Second of all- the rule used to be if you wanted the media to ignore it, you came out on Friday afternoon- after Rush's show was over. But now we have the blogosphere to keep it alive, and Sunday is only a day away. And Rush is unlikely to give this a pass.

99 Killgore Trout  Sat, May 31, 2008 3:40:47pm

Ed Morrisey....
Obamas quit Trinity United Church of Christ

However, I don’t see how this helps, and it could hurt in two different ways. First, it confirms that the church is not in the mainstream, which once again calls his judgment into question. Wright and Pfleger gave these kinds of sermons there the entire time, not just over the last few weeks. The big problem is that the Obamas sat in that church for 20 years listening to these sermons and finding nothing objectionably about them until they got disseminated to the nation.

Second, and potentially more damaging, it shows Obama’s willingness to throw anyone over the side when the boat starts sinking. That won’t go over very well with his core supporters who have admired his loyalty to TUCC, who excused Wright by pointing out that he had retired, and who bought Obama’s explanation of the “wonderful community” and great works of TUCC. Is that now nothing more than a convenient lie?

Foxnews has it...and it was on ABC Nightly News.

Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have resigned their membership at the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, FOX News has confirmed, after controversies stemming from the congregation created a persistent distraction for Obama’s campaign.

Most recently, a Web video surfaced showing a Chicago priest, the Rev. Michael Pfleger, giving a guest sermon at the church Sunday in which he taunts Hillary Clinton and says she felt she was “entitled” to the presidency because she’s white.

Obama said he was deeply disappointed by the remarks and Pfleger apologized, but Clinton’s campaign still demanded Obama specifically reject the latest remarks.

By resigning his membership, Obama is taking the most definitive stand to date against the church.

He already has roundly condemned his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr.

Videos of Wright’s sermons, in which he claimed the U.S. government created HIV to exterminate black people and said “God damn America,” threatened to derail Obama’s campaign when they first surfaced in March.

/Why didn't he wait longer?

Membership in Trinity United Church was his main defense against accusations of still being a Muslim. "Hey, I'm a church-goer, so I can't be a Muslim, can I?"

Now that he's quit that church, he has no religious affiliation at all.

That defense never did hold water [not that the MSM would notice anyway]... after all, when the Rev. Wright needed security for his foray into the outside world [i.e. The Press Club in D.C.] who did he engage as his muscle? Why, his buddies the Nation of Islam, of course.

That church cared more if you were angry and black than they cared about Jesus or the Bible.

An obvious feature of Barack Obama that many people are forgetting: when he ran for the United State Senate, he ran unopposed. This is the primary reason that all these skeletons are dropping out of the closet: the vetting that would have been done for a US Senator was not done.

Jack Ryan who ran against Obama for the Illinois seat vacated by a retiring Republican, was expected to win, however he withdrew after allegations were made against him by his estranged wife Jeri Ryan that among other things, he had slept with their daughter, had asked Jeri to perform sex acts in public, etc.

The MSM tried Ryan in the press and Obama got a free ticket to the Senate.

It will probably cost the Dems the 2008 election, Obama should have never gotten this far, or at least cleaned up his act before he tried.

Not only does this action make Barak Hussein Obama look like an opportunist who merely does what he thinks the public wants to hear and thinks he's fooling them (and still believes what he believes anyway), but it makes his political advisors look like rookies.

I recall that not so long ago, a presidential candidate ran on the platform that his selection of advisors would make up for any of his deficiencies.

BHO seems to have selected a collection of rookies / incompetents. Being unable to select competent advisors is easily as bad as being inexperienced, and maybe much worse.

It might have something to do with the Dems' caucus thing today. Obama has hinted he's going to make a major announcement on Tues. The Koskidz are speculating that his statement will be that Hillary is out and the Dems have anointed him. If that's the case then this is the time to ditch his church, The story will be swept under the rug by declaration of victory on Tuesday.

I think you have the answer. And the kossies are actually speculating what a lot of others have already said. They practice GroupThink 101.

And I'm goin' to beat my Trinity Church, until I get satisfied

The theory is that if Obama hadn't withdrawn his name he would have gotten most of the 45% that didn't vote for Hillary.

Let's ignore that only 25% voted as undecided. By diluting the votes in half in both states, they are railroading the unelectable B Obama into the nomination.

It's all giving ammo to the rightwing hatemongers!

In the wake of the Father Michael Pfleger controversial sermon last Sunday at Trinity United Church of Christ, Barack Obama sent a letter yesterday resigning from his place of worship for the past 20 years.
I sort of, kind of, understand why he did it. But I’m also sort of, kind of, concerned about what this might portend for an Obama presidency.
Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Trinity are community building blocks that the right wing has turned into bricks to be thrown at presidential candidate Obama from now until the general election ends in November—and perhaps beyond.
So in an attempt to turn manufactured right-wing ammo into blanks, Obama has completely separated himself from his minister and his church. What worries me is this: Can we expect a President Obama to cave in to the whims and will of the right on policies and issues he knows are important, if this nation is to move forward in a progressive and compassionate manner? Can we expect him to genuflect to negative reports by an uninformed, misinformed or ill-willed media? Is the candidate of change willing to go-along in a willy-nilly get-along fashion?
I hope not, but I’m not sure.
Obama knows what Trinity is about. I’ve only set foot in the church twice in my life and I know what it’s about. It’s nothing like it’s being portrayed in the national media. Nor is Rev. Wright.
Obama knows that Rev. Wright and his church and Father Pfleger have been forces for good on Chicago’s South Side for three decades. Both Trinity and Father Pfleger should have known the Catholic priest’s racially-tinged mocking Hillary Clinton performance would only be perceived as another weapon to use against Obama. They should know, as I know, that they ultimately left the Illinois senator with little political choice.
I also know that perception can become reality in our media-defined world. But reality is not always perception. And, the reality is that Obama cannot let the right-wing dictate his principles.

Obama got a free ticket to ride on the Reading. The delegate counts were predetermined and weighed unfairly in Obama's favor. Since the actual delegate margins would have been too damaging, they reduced Michigan and Florida to slave status worth 50% of full participation.

The Dems are the party of unity and equality. Amen, and let's close this meeting still unified and moving forward for change.

The most disenfranchised delegates are those of Hillary. Since she won most of Mi (without O on the ballot) she should take those delegates. She won't.

Libns think so highly of people.

Unfortunately, many voters don't choose candidates based on facts and reason, but on impressions, hearsay, and emotion, and they are all easily influenced or manipulated. It's a particularly sensitive time for Obama and he can't afford to give Clinton or McCain's campaigns (as well as the 527's) any ammunition.

Not only that, but a Catholic whitey. Obama must know that he has a zero chance of getting more than a small portion of the Catholic vote. Based on his history of voting for infanticide and abortion, the Catholic Church is going to come after him with all barrels blazing, if he gets the Dem. nomination. Although the shorter bus may also reflect the noticeably declining number of campaign staffers who have not yet found themselves underneath of the bus rather then inside it.

She may lose the nomination, but she can see to it that Obama loses the general election, thus saving the party from a setback that would last several cycles.

And today - with the fight in the Rules committee - they choose to tinker. Interesting, eh?

And Sarandon will take loads of useless 'celebrities' with her! ;)

736 neverquit  Sat, May 31, 2008 4:49:07pm

For me, this is somewhat comical, tragic, ironic and inevitable.

This is the beginning of the end, of one of the key traditions that helped build this country.

Read Below:

Central Committee

The Central Committee was one of the central institutions in the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU), along with the Politburo, Secretariat, party congress, Central Auditing Commission, and Party Control Committee. Given the political system's centralist, monolithic aspirations, these central institutions bore heavy responsibilities. One of the Central Committee's main functions was to elect all Party leaders, including members of the Politburo and Secretaries of the Central Committee. The Committee - whose members included powerful people in the Communist Party - met every six months in plenary session to approve decisions by the top levels of the party.

The Central Committee was also considered to be the highest organ of the party between congresses (the period known as the sozyv). According to the party rules (Ustav), the Central Committee was supposed to "direct all the activities of the party and the local party organs, carry out the recruitment and the assignment of leading cadres, direct the work of the central governmental and social organizations of the workers, create various organs, institutions, and enterprises of the party and supervise their activities, name the editorial staff of central newspapers and journals working under its auspices, disburse funds of the party budget and verify their accounting."

However, the Central Committee was large; in 1989, for example, it consisted of more than three hundred members. In actuality then, there were two Central Committees. One of them was the body of elected representatives of the Communist Party. The other was the name used in documents produced for and by any number of smaller Central Committee bodies, from the Politburo to the temporary commissions. Thus, the decrees of the Central Committee were seldom prepared by that body. Instead, the Politburo often initiated, discussed, and finalized them.

Clinton has exactly zero to gain if she withdraws from the race now. She'll blow up Obama in Puerto Rico, and in the one remaining caucus and primary, there's a legitimate chance she could win them as well.

You can't take control of the convention floor until you are voted the candidate. And if you don't have enough pledged delegates, it has to go to a vote first. Any vote must follow any unresolved credentials fight, and any superdelegate can switch affiliations at any time.

Suggested drinking rule: Anytime he says something that sounds like it's out of R.E.M.'s Losing My Religion, you take a drink!

Here are the lyrics, for those not familiar with it.

Life is bigger
It's bigger than you
And you are not me
The lengths that I will go to
The distance in your eyes
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
That's me in the corner
That's me in the spotlight
Losing my religion
Trying to keep up with you
And I don't know if I can do it
Oh no I've said too much
I haven't said enough
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
Every whisper
Of every waking hour I'm
Choosing my confessions
Trying to keep an eye on you
Like a hurt lost and blinded fool
Oh no I've said too much
I set it up
Consider this
The hint of the century
Consider this
The slip that brought me
To my knees failed
What if all these fantasies
Come flailing around
Now I've said too much
I thought that I heard you laughing
I thought that I heard you sing
I think I thought I saw you try
But that was just a dream
That was just a dream

The democrat party was destroyed went they let the New Left take over in the seventies. The party moved from American style liberalism [i.e. capitalist, but with a medium to large welfare system to take the edge off] to a hard left/socialist/marxist party. The marxist dogma of identity politics tagged along, and has been eating away the soul of the party ever since -- the idea that one's gender or skin color defines some sort of narrow range of "legitimate" beliefs for you, assigned to you by whichever group claims you, is offensive to anyone who values liberty.

Uncommitted until the first ballot, and changeable after that. I'm not sure how many ballots it takes, but if a candidate isn't elected after a certain number of ballots (and I don't think it's that many) then all delegates become free to vote for anyone they choose. In fact, they can nominate a candidate that never even campaigned for the presidency. It's happened before.

The cheers and tears were the best!

THANKS

re: #896 Blitherakt

she said it could change the ph in her bladder. as for the dachshund, she has a blood disorder and we think it has something to do with that.

We lived in a house that had soft water. these problems plagued our dogs. We then moved and had regular water for a year. No problems with the dogs. My husband installed a water softener and in 2 days they both exhibited the same symptoms as previous.

Interesting. Salt-based soft water softener, or RO system?

re: #898 ContraJihadi

That, no doubt, is the plan. Its pastor can go on ranting, Obama can collect donations, and it will all be hush hush, free of distraction.

It makes no diference, Obama said in the 20+ years there, he had no idea of the racism and other hatred that is being preached there.

The Obama camp has been playing the race card, with little success, so now, they are going at it from the sympathy angle.

As I stated earlier, 20+ years of Satanic teachings are too much for Obama to break free of by his own power.

"a-20" -

For what it is worth, "Cerveza Modelo" brews come into the US "Half Skunky", just like Heineken and Beck's. Truthfully, a "Ghetto Brew" like Steel Reserve, Camo, St. Ides, or "OE" among others that is FRESH goes down better with a Bigger Hit (Except "OE" on the 'hit' - "OE" is a vastly devalued "Pound" as compared to +/- 1969 when it came out - take it from the "Dr." on that one.

listen to the crap this man is speaking to distract from the issue

which is the repugnant behavior and content of hatred this church represents

There has been talk about a "surprise" video of Michelle Obama ripping white people at that very "church".

It will be interesting to see and hear when it finally makes the rounds.

Interesting. I'm aware that RO systems alter the pH of the water (making it a bit acidic), but I wasn't aware salt-based systems did that. I'll have to check the pH of my pool when I get home and see what it is compared to the tap water.

No can do - Hagee is far too biased in favour of Israel.

The superdelegates in those states will almost totally nullify that delegate gain, just like they did in another state recently.

Take it away from the most popular candidate and reward the chosen one.

The five lights of the apocalypse rising struggling towards the light, the sins revealed only to those who enter the temple only to the chosen one. The chosen one. The chosen one. The chosen one. The chosen one.

Speaking from personal experience in the United Church of Christ, after 15+ years as a member, a deacon, a missionary, and serving on several other committees, I can tel you that I left when about 3 years ago when the church seemed to lurch to the left.

I witnessed my pastor preaching sermons that stated that the Gospel doesn't mean what it say when it says in John 14:6 "No one can come to the Father, except through Me". I witnessed posters that proclaimed feed a woman, feed a family - implying that men will feed themselves and let their kids starve. I witnessed a church that accused me of racism when I proposed mission support for slave rescue missions in Sudan - assuming some perverted sort of white guilt. And a church that invited a speaker on MLK day who unabashedly accused all whites of being racists ,simply because we are white.

Obama listened to MUCH worse - and didn't leave. And he listened to it WITH HIS CHILDREN for over 20 years.

He listened to hatred being preached from the pulpit in a congregation that cheered and danced in the aisles over such twisted preaching.

And he didn't leave until it was exposed to the bright light of day.

Letting your children be indoctrinated into HATE and RACISM doesn't strike me as the kind of judgment that I want governing our country.

In fact, it strike me as a cynical, cheap last-ditch effort to escape a 20+ year histroy that is filled with revealing FACTS.

As a wise person once observed, ethics are what you do WHEN NO ONE IS LOOKING.

927 isurviving  Sat, May 31, 2008 8:15:52pm

This is simply a part of his long-term strategy. The Left has long anointed Obama as the Messiah. He is simply leaving to make his religion official.

Praise be Barack.

Has anyone heard if there is an edited version of Outkast's "Rosa Parks" make especially for Obama?

I say, ahhhh haaa hush that fuss, everyone get under-neath da bus...
