Obama's Church Bus Throw, Thread 2

Sat, May 31, 2008 at 6:08:30 pm PDT

Well, CNN and MSNBC are downplaying it for all they’re worth, and even Fox News is curiously low-key, but LGF readers seem to have plenty to say about Obama’s departure from Trinity United Church, so here’s another open thread...

Oddly enough, what's left of CNN's audience is hungry for some news since I'm getting steady traffic from their website.

Did they or MessNBC ever pick up the Wizard of Uhhh's press conference?

Talk about being caught flatfooted. I can see it with MessNBC since the weekends are just taped schlock. But not 30 minutes earlier I saw CNN's talking heads congratulating themselves for being the best political coverage.

12 Dianna  Sat, May 31, 2008 6:13:06pm

Nothing is going to change the minds of the hardcore Obama supporters, but if this is openly discussed, it will make the mushy middle recoil.

Obama's trying to have his cake and eat it, too. The moment people start thinking about it, this is going to make people desert him in droves.

A pity about his delegate count.

13 kenprice  Sat, May 31, 2008 6:13:23pm

Obama will throw anyone and anything he need to "under the bus" if he thinks it will give him any advantage. He's nothing but a Illinois politician, and a corrupt as any. The onlt "change" is the color of his skin.

We need true statesmen to run for office and we might get a better government out of the deal.

re: #32 Dianna

Many black churches do politics from their pulpit; for some reason, they never lose their 501(c)(3) status. From the non-profit world standpoint, it's pretty strange.

I'll say. From the IRS's own website:

If any of the activities (whether or not substantial) of your organization consist of participating in, or intervening in, any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office, your organization will not qualify for tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3). Such participation or intervention includes the publishing or distributing of statements.

Whether your organization is participating or intervening, directly or indirectly, in any political campaign on behalf of (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office depends upon all of the facts and circumstances of each case. Certain voter education activities or public forums conducted in a non-partisan manner may not be prohibited political activity under section 501(c)(3), while other so-called voter education activities may be prohibited.

Drudge isn't conservative. No link, but I remember seeing an analysis of Drudge Report and it skewed to the left.

I listened to a lot of his Sunday night broadcasts, and I think I'm inclined to agree he is not a principled conservative. But he's no socialist either. Can't believe he'd buy into Obama's BS; he knows all about Chicago/Illinois politics.

re: #99 Perplexed

It's pretty unpleasant to contemplate, but I do wish the IRS would start doing exactly that, even if it takes a committee completely composed of minorities. Most nonprofits have to take incredible pains to avoid even the slightest appearance of advocating for a political candidate. Even "issue" nonprofits can't claim any expenses for advocating their cause as a charitable expense.

That some churches routinely do so, and get away with it, never ceases to amaze and disgust me.

I once attended a church, that to discuss politics, had to have the meeting off site so as to not violate the terms of 501(c)(3). Too bad he didn't figure this out twenty years ago. He now has to deal with this, his friends and associates and their associated baggage. How many of us lead lives that would stand up to this kind of scrutiny? This in no way excuses his behavior and that of his 'friends.'

We need true statesmen to run for office and we might get a better government out of the deal.

I agree, but anyone with any merit will have a past and not always one that can stand up under the media microscope.

There are truly worthy people out there who would make great leaders, but they know that every single one of their youthful indiscretions would be hunted up and paraded by a media that cannot stand merit or greatness.

So we're stuck with hacks and mediocrities.

Heatstroke -- an Original Sci Fi Channel Movie: "An ex-model teams up with a soldier to thwart aliens who are propelling gloval warming to make Earth habitable for their species." Apparently it stars those two thespian luminaries, D.B. Sweeney and Danica McKellar.

Question: Does the programming management at Sci Fi actually go out of its way to air the shittiest, grade C, hack movies ever? For some reason whenever that channel promotes an "exclusive Sci Fi Original Movie," it turns out to be a celluloid ass-dropping of which the above is exempliary, with titles like Dark Breed or Fire Serpent or Reign of the Gargoyles or some other such trite bilge, and featuring vapid, no-talent unknowns or washed-up, no-talent hacks (who, since Love Boat was cancelled, apparently have to have someplace to ply their wares), complete with bullshit CG effects which aren't as sophisticated as an XBox game. Drudge coverage: AMEN: OBAMA QUITS CHURCH... and SAYS REPORTERS HOUNDED TRINITY SHUT-INS...
He really has a thing for Obama.
/Go figure

Drudge is afraid the Hilldebeast would Fort Marcy Park him, or at the very least sic the IRS on him if she gets in as revenge for his breaking the Lewinsky story and he has no confidence in a McCain victory.

I guess he figures an Obama presidency would implode and ignite a conservative backlash.

And he has quit his radio show as of several months ago. He was hinting at leaving the country if Hilldebeast was elected.

Black churches have never had to worry about media criticism, much less the IRS, when they support candidates. PC fear rules.

PC fear is also why Pfleger still has a parish church. If his congregation were white, and if he didn't have strong ties to the black "progressive" movement, the POS would have been canned years ago.

IMHO

So Obama has seen the light. Obviously his political aspirations trump his religious “spiritual” leanings for many years. I have never confused the quality of spiritualism with any religion. There is no Judeo-Christian text that says that on the eighth day the Almighty created religion. I believe that only Allah (Stan) has that claim to fame.
Back in 1963 my grandfather passed away; I was a young woman then. He was a man of few words, but those he spoke were profound. He told me once that it should not be race, religion, gender, ethnicity, politics, or wealth that separates people. It should be character and spirituality. I will take his words and separate myself from Barack Obama because my assessment is that he is truly lacking in character and spirituality. There is nothing wrong in separating ourselves from those who we determine are deficient in those two qualities.
So if Obama can separate himself from his religion, church, and spiritual advisor of the past two decades over the media flak, what does that say about the depth of his character and spirituality. It says more to me about his ambitions. If Obama truly had character, and truly believed in his religion as spiritual, he’d be loyal and defending it. But, obviously, those qualities don’t run very deep with him. Imagine how he’d be loyal to the USA as President and Commander-In-Chief.
Just Grandma’s thoughts on this lovely SC evening. Thanks for listening, and have a nice day.

Now that he's disavowed his church and congregation of twenty years, and says he won't choose a new church until after the election, my gloomiest fear has just become more palpable. You cannot impeach a president-elect for choosing any religious affiliation, including Islam.

Nobody is saying he sucks and stop being so defensive. Just saying he's rather eccentric and were he more focused he'd probably be closer to 600 HR's by now. Apparently you've missed those stretches the past 15 years where he would just mail it in or develop mystery ailments.

I know someone who used to coach him back in HS and he said he'd never seen a better raw talent but the guy just didn't have anything upstairs.

I feel for a guy like Ken Griffey whose body has broken down on him or he'd probably own the alltime HR record by now. I'm not saying Ramirez has wasted his talent but he sure has squandered some of it.

Think I'll scan the handy-dandy TV viewing guide for some relief . . . Ah, what's this, over at the Sci-Fi Channel? Heatstroke -- an Original Sci Fi Channel Movie: "An ex-model teams up with a soldier to thwart aliens who are propelling gloval warming to make Earth habitable for their species."

Aww c'mon, that could be totally cool if they did it right. Al Gore is revealed at the end to be some sort of hideous alien bug and gets blown away by a hottie wielding a Steyr AUG. Something like "Team America" meets "V".

Question: Does the programming management at Sci Fi actually go out of its way to air the shittiest, grade C, hack movies ever? For some reason whenever that channel promotes an "exclusive Sci Fi Original Movie," it turns out to be a celluloid ass-dropping of which the above is exempliary...

Actually Sci Fi did a pretty good adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune". It was filmed on a soundstage in Prague...the whole thing had the feel of a '50's Biblical epic but with modern CGI. I thought it was much better than the godawful David Lynch version from the '80s.

Unfortunately that milk never grew him a spine and he crawfishes on everything he says the day before.

See, with his "church" (which has nothing in common with any Christian church I've been in), if Obama is elected then they can't talk about whitey keeping them down anymore.
If he's not elected then they can continue that outdated bs they've been brainwashing people with while stroking their wallets.

In the meantime, O Hussein is attempting to schmooze any group he can and telling them anything to get support. People are beginning to see now that not only is his nose darker than the rest of his face, but it is also growing longer speech by speech.

Google has done a complete whitewash on the committee meeting today that unfairly proportioned the Florida and Michigan votes in Obama's favor.

In their top 20 headline groupings, it's not there at all. But two Louisiana judges convicted of taking news is definitely there. Might was well focus on what's truly important, rather than trivial stuff like the disenfranchisement of voters.

African economists lowering expectations and Israel blocking Gaza students from studying abroad are in that group however. I'm not getting the connection that makes those "US news", but who am I to question Google?

Ok, today is THE day Obama lost.
Here's why. A crisis in leadership, A failure to act!

When this whole Rev Wright sh*t came out , he should have immediately quit, to retain any credibility he still had left, by hanging with this guy for 20 years.

Yes, he 'wink wink' condemned Rev Wright, but he didn't leave the church, and the church continued in it's ways, and his kids continued to go there.
Finally it took another incident, another 'bomb' to force him to change his course of action and make a decisive decision.
Now, I know that in a real world crisis, he would be weak and wait until 'another' major bomb went off before taking any preemptive action.

Sorry, Obama , the race is over.

And we know it was "all" for the kiddies....

I think the Church might express some disappointment that the white half overruled the black half....so much for the uniter. More the divider and conquerer.

Obama didn't have the insight to figure out how the inflammatory nature of his church would play out in the election. He has stumbled through this whole sordid episode. It's saddening, just like watching a prize fighter walk into punch after punch, ugh. This lack of insight and judgment doesn’t instill much confidence in if a President Obama will be able to handle real life and death conflicts with worldwide consequences. The guy couldn’t figure out his church would be poisonous to him in the election and proactively have left the church a year or two ago. Is he the worlds dumbest politician or what? This demonstrates a lack of insight, judgment and tendency toward inaction which would be dangerous in a president. If he couldn't figure out and take action to forestall issues from his church how in this green earth is he qualified to be president?

Perhaps Obama has inadvertantly revealed the underbelly of black racism that many of us suspected but couldn't discuss.

Now, black racism is a topic of discussion.

He'll go down in flames in the next election, but his legacy may be the initiation of a real conversation about race -- one that discusses racism in all segments of society, not just among whites.

And he may also get rid of that ridiculous notion that racism/sexism is about power, not race or gender.

Without these canards, though, he'll destroy the intellectual basis of the D party. Too funny, really.

Obama is down to one meme: McCain wants to continue Bush's failed policies.

Obama, on the other hand, has new ideas and will change things. To get Iran to abandon its nuclear program, he plans to sit down with the mullahs and promise them membership in the WTO.

Except Condi offered the Iranians that three years ago. They said they weren't interested cause the WTO is controlled by Zionists and Zionist stooges.

The decision to quit the church appeared to be a sign that Obama wants to put the issue behind him before the general election.

Obama said he and his family would find another church, although he said they would not likely settle on one until early next year.

Whoever wins in November will be inaugurated in January to succeed President George W. Bush.

Hugh Hewitt recently did a wonderful takedown of Obama's rhetorical style which you really ought to listen to. It's funny, but also extremely incisive. Bottom line: most of the time Obama has no idea what he's talking about.

Go here. The clip you want is number 29, hour 2 of the May 20 show (clip number 28, which is hour 3, is titled 'Obama audio' but it's clip 29, 'Dean Barnett', that you want).

The essence of Hugh's analysis starts at around 7 minutes and lasts about 3 minutes, but you should listen from the start to get the context, and listen to the rest of the hour, and hour 3, if you have the time.

Someone with more time and expertise than me needs to put this on YouTube, with a slideshow of shots from Obama rallies.

370 Ziggy  Sun, Jun 1, 2008 6:02:44am
