This is perhaps the most puzzling and uncomfortable thing about the DNC clash for the nomination, how once loyal Clinton supporters have come to hate them, and how easily they do it.

This is the MSM's way of doing to the Hildebeast what they and their fellow liberal travelers think the LGF and the "right-wing" bloggers/media have done to Obama when we call out his and Michelle's odious history.

Very interesting article. By implication Clinton hasn't given up his philandering ways (at all). Money quote:
The sensitivity among Clinton’s staff to these questions is such that, after I posed some queries about Clinton’s relationship with Burkle and Co., a spokesman, Jay Carson, e-mailed me this comment: “The ills of the Democratic Party can be seen perfectly in the willingness of fellow Democrats to say bad things about President Clinton. If you ask any Republican about Reagan they will say he still makes the sun rise in the morning, but if you ask Democrats about their only two-term president in 80 years, a man who took the party from the wilderness of loserdom to the White House and created the strongest economy in American history, they’d rather be quoted saying what a reporter wants to hear than protect a strong brand for the party. Republicans look at this behavior and laugh at us.”

The important fact in the article, and it is a fact, is that Clinton traveled to Kazakhstan with this guy who then made a bundle off sweetheart deals with the Tyrant of Kstan, and then donated a bundle to the Clinton library.

From the link: "In fairness, it should be said that Clinton’s entourage that weekend also included his daughter, Chelsea, and her boyfriend, Marc Mezvinsky, and no one who was there has adduced the slightest evidence that Clinton’s behavior was anything other than proper. Nor, indeed, is there any proof of post-presidential sexual indiscretions on Clinton’s part, despite a steady stream of tabloid speculation and Internet intimations that the Big Dog might be up to his old tricks. On any given visit to London, for example, Clinton is as apt to dine with Tony Blair or Kevin Spacey as with anyone who might raise an eyebrow.
But among the not-so-small cadre of Clinton friends and former aides, concern about the company the boss keeps is persistent, palpable, and pained. No former president of the United States has ever traveled with such a fast crowd, and most 61-year-old American men of Clinton’s generation don’t, either. “I just think those guys are radioactive,” one former aide to Clinton who is still in occasional affectionate touch with him told me recently, referring to Burkle and (to a lesser extent) Bing. “I stay far away from them.”
Another former aide, trusted by Clinton for his good judgment, said, “On the sort of money, women, all that stuff ... I’m the bad guy. All this stuff is kept away from me. Whatever they’re doing, they definitely view me as somebody you cannot confide in.”
I gotta say that few people can do a real hit piece with the flair of Vanity Fair - nothing but innuendo and suppositions, but VF weaves it together, after throwing in the above referenced disclaimer, into making Slick Willie the modern day Caligula -only older than the younger Caligula and with no hint of his screwing his own sister (if indeed Bill has one).
Really shoddy journalism, all dressed up.

No difference, in this case.
It *IS* relevant, as the article points out, because Bill's finances are co-mingled with Hilary's and the money he collects from his various panderings can legitimately be viewed as financing her campaign.

Ha!
I actually have a suspicion it comes down to being the difference between a man who is a secure and complete adult and pays attention to those things he is responsible for, and a man who never grew up and pays no attention at all to those things he is responsible for.
I agree. It may have something to do with having no moral compunction against it either...

I don't think he would. My first husband had an affair during our marriage. After we split up and he married the woman he had the affair with, my biggest consolation was that if he stepped out on me, he would do it to her, too. From my experience and the experiences of friends - once that pattern is there, it tends to stay.

Yes indeedy, and that, for me, was what the entire issue was about. Nobody cared about his "private life", except that as president, he was a public person, and any part of his private live that reflected on his abilities as a public person was indeed something people needed to know about.
What was so amazing to me was that so many people did not seem to care that his behavior was so obviously the behavior of an immature adolescent rather than a grown man - and then on top of that, this immature adolescent was the President of the most powerful country on the face of the earth!
How could an immature adolescent have the judgment necessary to run this country the way it needed to be run? Answer, of course - an immature adolescent wouldn't have a mature level of judgment.

I figured that would be the case. Back then drunk driving was treated like a speeding ticket, obviously not just in Memphis. But speaking of Long Island Iced Tea, we used to get them in the EM club at NAS Memphis. $1.00 for a 24 ounce paper cup! And our pop machines in our barracks had pop and beer, .50 a can for American beer, and .75 for Moosehead or Heineken.

Yet there is a USS Jimmy Carter. I would resign sooner than serve aboard such a ship. Easy for me to say; my chances of going to a submarine are zero. But it's the thought that counts.
And as much as I loved Ronald Reagan, I think it was a disaster to abandon the long-standing taboo against naming ships for living persons.

An aircraft carrier to be named after Ford will be under construction soon. It's scheduled to be "laid down" in 2009 and commissioned in 2015. Was announced by Rumsfeld at the memorial service for Ford in Grand Rapids, MI.
I didn't hear that they decided to change the lead boat in the USN's new supercarrier class from the America to the Ford...at least the government is doing something decent and lasting by President Ford, especially after the merciless drubbing he took after pardoning Nixon.

See my #178 re the planned USS Gerald R. Ford.
The only thing that sucks about bringing the Ford online is that it's replacing the nearly 50-year-old USS Enterprise. I just hope that the USN sees fit to at least name a Ford-class carrier Enterprise...that would be very nice.

Clinton attacks Vanity Fair:
[Link: www.politico.com...]
The Clinton camp responded today to Vanity Fair's long article on Bill with its own 2,476-word memo, which includes attacks on the magazine's "penchant for libel," on editor Graydon Carter, and on writer Todd Purdum and his wife, former Clinton aide Dee Dee Myers. The memo (after the jump) calls the piece "journalism of personal destruction at its worst" and singles out, among other things, Purdum's suggestion that Clinton's heart surgery changed his personality.
Purdum "is not an MD," the memo points out.
The memo, provided by Clinton aide Jay Carson, also singles out Myers for this unexplained criticism:
Purdum's disclosure of [his marriage] in the piece does not, as Vanity Fair apparently concluded, remove the obvious conflict of interest. It's a conflict that would likely not be contemplated at more reputable publications, especially considering that, as a result of this relationship, at least one source's anonymity was revealed to others.
The memo also lists Bill Clinton's post-presidential accomplishments.
"Most revealing is one simple fact: President Clinton has helped save the lives of 1,300,000 people in his post-presidency, and Vanity Fair couldn't find time to talk to even one of them for comment," it says.
When did Clinton save the lives of 1,300,000 people?
Anyhow - the full memo is at the link.

I would have thought the Clinton Crime Syndicate would have stopped the article before it was published. The machine is getting rusty.
Maybe its time for Todd Purdum of Vanity Fair to experience a Clinton sponsored airplane ride to visit Leonid Kuchma in the Ukraine...
And, then Todd could view the crime scene pictures of scores of murdered journalists – just as a friendly reminder of how dangerous journalism can be.
Then the next free trip should be given to MarkKos... just to let him known he is betting on the wrong horse.

If there is a tape of Michelle calling people "honky," Obama will preforms a mitigated double reverse fake-out spousal sub-bus insertion. Here is how:
Race and racism are a disease. All are infected with this disease. Even doctors during the Plague would fall under its effects. Only one man, like Will Smith in 'I am Legend,' is truly inoculated from the infection of racism due to his genetic and spiritual makeup, though perhaps Tiger Woods is also another but Tiger plays golf not heals the electorate. My wife is sick and I will heal her just as I will heal us all, with your help, prayers and vote, and money.
That type of thing. And, it may work.

Why do you suppose the media scrutiny was "overdue" until now? Dee Dee Myers has known who and what Clinton is for a long time. Did the Kazakhstan thing just happen last month? I've been hearing about it for over a year. Why did they hold the story until now?
Obama.
Being the masters of personal destruction that they are, the Clintons of course know that that this is exactly what was going to happen - that once the Dem-SM picked a favorite, everything possible would be done to destroy his or her rivals - though perhaps they've been in denial, since historically they've never been able to believe that it could happen to them.

McCain. You are absolutely right. As for the clergy, one indeed seem a bit extreme. The other Haggee appears to have been smeared. As for lobbyists, they were there, and in deep. Saudis, Mexicans, and I am sure many more. Unfortunately most are still likely around and have done their damage.
As for Obama, he seems to surround himself with nutcases, lifelong maniacal friends, and anti-American loons. Which are revealed so very slowly by the MSM. Like they don't want us to know.

I don't think the connections you note require denouncing. Powers was a staffer who said something insulting about Hillary Clinton, and he fired her. Rezko is on trial for some kind of corruption; no one has proven that Obama was involved in any shady dealing w/ him, and The Chicago Tribune devoted enormous effort to finding such a connection. Obama gave to charity the money Rezko had donated to his various campaigns. The others are people with whom he's had passing associations, and he has criticized them for specific actions, as warranted.

I haven't been keeping score, but McCain has dismissed half a dozen people from his campaign staff based on their status as lobbyists (including for very corrupt foreign regimes) and has also cut ties with a couple of unsavory clerics.
Are you really suggesting that there is not a difference with McCain weeding out some campaign staff and Obama having to disavow his Pastor of 20 years along with his church? (not that I believe for one second that he doesn't agree with what the Pastor said, or he wouldn't have stayed for two decades)

An aircraft carrier to be named after Ford will be under construction soon. It's scheduled to be "laid down" in 2009 and commissioned in 2015. Was announced by Rumsfeld at the memorial service for Ford in Grand Rapids, MI.
Thanks for for the link. But when is a ship going to be named after President Nixon?
I liked Nixon, even though I was a kid back then. Say what you will about him, good or bad, and it was mostly good.
But if that piece of shit Carter has a sub named after him, President Nixon should also be honored, and it should have been before Presidents Ford or Carter.
Nixon's legacy compared to Ford is skewed due to Ford's losing the 1976 election because Ford did the right thing by pardoning Nixon.
Carter's legacy will be remembered as a man who was a cluster fuck of a President who was booted out of office due to his incompetence.

Am going to bed, so this has to be my last comment for tonight.
I'd say this is something of an "on the one hand, on the other hand" situation. On the one hand, McCain's associations w/ his creepy pastors were entirely for political convenience, so their revolting statements probably don't have much of anything to do with his own views. On the other hand, it's deeply cynical to seek the endorsement of people whose views you don't even care enough about to explore before trotting them out to speak on your behalf. McCain has gotten in trouble repeatedly for not being himself. He's not an evangelical Christian or a social conservative, and he'd be better off just being himself. And yes, his hand was forced w/ regard to those lobbyists.
W/ regard to Obama, his connections to Wright and the church were long and deep, so the issue of cynicism doesn't arise, but the question of what they shared does. Although I find many of Wright and Pfleger's statements repulsive, it seems clear to me that Obama doesn't hate America or white people, so I'm not particularly troubled by this association.
There are many statements from people who have nothing to do w/ the Obama campaign about all the good work the church has done, so I don't see it as any kind of danger. I do, though, think that, to the extent its leaders encourage a view of America that doesn't take into account the advances in racial justice made over the past fifty years, they are doing the community a disservice. I also think, however, that it is way too easy for white people to look at that progress and conclude that black people no longer have anything to complain about.

One more source on Obama's connection to Ayers. This is Hugh Hewitt. Although the framework suggests something more insidious that the WaPo article, he basically comes up with the same info: the small campaign contribution and the service on the board of the same charitable organization. I haven't read anything about a closer connection (certainly nothing that would justify a "where would Obama be without Ayers" statement), but if anyone has other information, I'd be glad to look at it.

Michael Dobbs of the WaPo is a big Obamassiah supporter, you know.
He does come up with a few facts about the Ayers association, such as Obama spending 3 years on a charity board w/ Ayers. There are other facts out there.
Try the Annenberg Foundation for starters.
What evidence do you have that Dobbs is an Obama supporter? That's a fairly strong charge to make against the person who is doing the Post's fact-checking column.

Reagan was a great communicator, Jimmy Carter antidote, and along with the Pope and Lady Thatcher put Communism away, but he failed to connect with black America at the time when he directly commicated with the very white democrats that may also switch to McCain.
My Great Uncle was a lifelong black Republican (born at the turn of the century) and organized the black vote in Illinois for every election until Reagan, and voted Democrat for the first time in his life in that election.
I wonder if there is any book on this, I would love to read it before this election.

Blacks born of voting age in 1980 had seen many examples where self-reliance was not enough, as well as many gains. For many reasons Reagan was threatening.
In my opinion, as probably yours, the welfare state and the great society were more harmful to the black family. Democrats were politically motivated in championing themselves as the natural and only black vote.
I am just curious about this and its implication for this election where Obama, who many believe is messaih-like, is also completely failing to connect with a segment of the population based on race.

I'm not an expert in voting patterns, but my impression has been that blacks have been solidly Democratic since FDR. Current Republicans like to claim that because their ancestry goes back to Lincoln and because liberal Northern Republicans voted for civil rights legislation in the 1960s, they are the party of racial justice. In fact, though, those liberal and moderate Republicans have barely been able to survive in the modern Republican party, and the formerly "Solid (Democratic) South" turned Republican after LBJ pushed through civil rights legislation.

Black Americans at the time of Reagan saw him as trying to dismantle the Welfare state as an excuse to roll back civil rights gains such as Brown versus Board of Education, etc...
I am not saying that was NOT paranoid or that Reagan was a closet racist. I am saying that many lifelong black Republicans became democrats.
However, the span of time in whcih black Americans in all parts of the US were gauranteed equality under law and equal opportunity in the public and private sector was rather short at that time which makes such paranois more understandable than, for example, now.
PS, you can say that Michelle is the product of affirmative action but Obama both in school and in this campaign has distinguished himself as a man of many abilities and it would be dangerous denial for people who oppose his politics to assume so.

but actually, Obama isn't "black", as percentages go.
now what? maybe admit that they're all voting on color, and not on content?
By the terms that have existed in the US as opposed to the Caribbean or South America, Obama is black.
But, those rules will probably change and hopefully to the point where it does not matter at all.

Wow, Bob, I wonder why conversations about historical trends get you so worked up and personal. Take a deep breath, dude.

re: #370 Bob in Breckenridge
You are a moron. THE ONLY REASON OBAMA IS CONNECTING WITH BLACKS IS BECAUSE HE'S BLACK. IF I, OR ANYBODY ELSE ON LGF SAID WE'RE VOTING FOR A GUY BECAUSE OF HIS SKIN COLOR WE'D BE CALLED RACISTS.
People have voted for political candidates out of ethnic pride for generations, especially when the candidate is a "first" from an underdog group. When JFK ran and was elected, Irish Catholics were over the moon.
Keep in mind that black people did not originally support Obama in especially large numbers. There was all that "is he black enough talk", and it was only when they got to know him better and he proved that he could win among white people that blacks began to support him almost universally.

Random late night thought: If the UK is falling under control of a loser 5th Century culture, than America is not doing a good enough job at communicating the virtues of our culture. Hollywood liberals and their hyper active fantasy fog machine have obscured the real America to the outside world. Even to many hear. Liberals have the Mass media power and fewer and fewer Americans are free rational thinkers. The lack of will to fight for core principles from any side is pure testimony to that fact. The 5th column has done it's job well.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And here's a more representative sample of his left-wing bias.
As a former operator of the White House "propaganda machine", Scott McClellan lacks credibility as a critic of the press. But on the question of whether the American press did its job properly during the run-up to the Iraq war, it is difficult to argue with his conclusions. We failed you.
The next "fact check" column on McCain and his "verb tenses" is just as biased. Give me a break, this guy is a liberal who seems to be from what I have read, not only for Obama, but especially, against George Bush and the war effort.
By the way, Dobbs' column is considered a "blog" (you know, one of those unreliable thingies people link to around here), also- at least by his own paper the WaPo (check out the link).

It was an error. I have no way of knowing how it came about, but I don't regard it as a terribly important mistake. It has much less significance for current decision-making than, say, McCain's errors this past week about how many troops are in Iraq. Halfway down the trail to Hell,
In a shady meadow green
Are the Souls of all dead troopers camped,
Near a good old-time canteen.
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddlers' Green.
Marching past, straight through to Hell
The Infantry are seen.
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marines,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene.
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen.
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge of fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

While I'd like to see a black president, just to get this issue buried once and for all, Obama isn't the man. Hell, if he were to be elected, he'd end up setting black/white relations back 50 years by hin probable incompentance. Frankly, I'm hoping Hillary gets the dem nomination because I think the US could survive her, were she to win. But Obama? The man has no experience at anything like the presidency; hell, he's been handed everything he's done since law school. The white supremists will be able to point to him as proof of their beliefs.

tokyobk: Obama isn't connecting with me, but it has absolutely nothing to do with race. The man's credentials are as thin as rice paper. (Like Hillary's) He seems to fold under pressure and to surrounded himself with antiAmerican marxists.
I agree with almost all of this and fear you are right. I will vote for John McCain. But I also kind of like Jim Webb and wonder if Obama will pick him for VP.

Everyone is so quick with the insults here.
Actually, the point made to me was that by "my" logic Obama is a Muslim because his father was a Muslim so I amswered that neither in my nor in American concepts is Obama a Muslim since in America freedom to chose religion is part of our cultural fiber.
I am quite aware that this is different than what is held by the Sharia.
and, under "sharia" or "muslim" law, which is held to be applicable regardless of location, jurisdiction or personal preference, he's a muslim.
what's your point?

I was answering a specific question about my assumptions and the historical definition of race (heritable by one drop from either parent) and religion (not heritable by either). the first requirement for a "meaningful conversation" would be for you to define said meanings, since the appear to be somewhat amorphous in your use.

I think there are obvious political skills on his part that are sometimes denied by people here and elsewhere and I think this is a mistake. The Clinton's made the mistake of underestimating him. As for proving myself to you or anyone, I just don't find that neccessary. Nor do you need to prove to me anything.

Actually, no. In most parts of the world with a large African presence, the one-drop rule was never used as a definition of 'black' which created a large mulatto or colored class which Obama would be considered especially as education was also factored. But, ultimately, one-drop and all racial classifications are a waste of time and impediment to an equal society.

Iran closes semi-official news agency(Fars News)
Iran's state news agency IRNA says authorities have ordered the temporary closure of a semi-official news agency, Fars, for false reporting and disturbing public opinion. The IRNA report does not elaborate. But a governmental news Web site, Borna, says the agency was closed on Monday for three days because it carried a report that the head of Iran's Central Bank, Tahmasb Mazaheri, had been replaced by first vice president Parviz Davoodi.
Thang's could boil-over in the Islamofascist state; Supreme Fubar's having fits Iraq could very likely maintain a US presence for years - provided the Obamassiah doesn't give the keys to Baghdad away. Their economy is so screwed-up, no one knows how bad - food prices are going through the roof. The UK and EU have removed the PMOI(MEK) from their list of terrorist organizations(third story down)--the US will be doing the same come October--and the UK must evidently considering stiffer sanctions.
There has also been a rash of Iranian axis-dents with all manner of stuff reportedly going BOOM! -- stuff they are definitely trying not to advertise -- and the Mullah's are sweating-out Bush's time remaining in office, rooting for you-know-who(although they deny it, kinda).
Iran needs one real good push, even for as nasty as events would likely turn - screw Russia and China, our pals in Germany, the EU.
