How Wrong Were the Pundits on Obama's 'Race' Speech?

Mon, Jun 2, 2008 at 10:19:22 pm PDT

Now that Barack Obama has tossed his pastor and church of 20 years under the bus, let’s revisit the ridiculous over-the-top article by New York Times op-ed columnist Bob Herbert that followed Obama’s first attempt to snow his way out of the mess, the speech in which he said he could no more disavow Rev. Wright than he could disavow his own grandmother: With a Powerful Speech, Obama Offers a Challenge - New York Times.

The speech, which has gotten wonderful reviews, should be required reading in classrooms across the country — and in as many other venues as possible. With a worldview that embraces both justice and healing, Senator Obama is better on these issues than any American leader since King.

Unfortunately, what is more likely to happen is that the essence of the speech will be lost in the din that inevitably erupts whenever there is a racial controversy in the United States.

The fundamental message that Senator Obama is trying to get across is that the racial madness that has perverted so many elections needs to stop — and stop now. Time and again, that madness has been employed to undermine efforts to create what the senator characterizes as “a more just, more equal, more free, more caring and more prosperous America.”

Racial prejudice, ignorance, hostility — whatever — has caused millions of Americans to vote against their own economic interests, and for policies that have damaged the country.

“It’s hard to address big issues,” Mr. Obama told me, “if we’re easily diverted or distracted by racial antagonism.”

And this was only two months ago. Is Herbert embarrassed by this ludicrously wrong assessment now? I’m guessing not.

Deepest apologies to Mr. Churchill...I have the advance copy on President Obama's State of the Union for 2010:

Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the non-Buddhists and all the odious apparatus of non-Jewish rule, we shall not flag or fail, much.

We shall go on to the end, we shall fight in the Middle East, until it becomes unpopular.

We shall fight on the seas and oceans, until MoveOn says enough.

We shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air, until our industry crumbles under a carbon cap and trade system and Kyoto II: Return of the Killer Treaty.

We shall defend our Nation, whatever the cost may be, especially if only people from red states care enough to fight.

We shall fight on the beaches, as long as the sea-turtles aren't in the way.

We shall fight on the landing grounds, but not our southern border

We shall fight in the fields (not near the redwoods) and in the streets (but with non-lethal weapons),

We shall fight in the hills, were the last bitter, gun toting, God-fearing racist rednecks live;

We shall never surrender...unless not surrendering means we are Islamophobes and George Soros thinks he can make a buck!

The left must be loving this. No matter how well thought out or reasonable the objections and concerns are over BHO as a candidate, the only response they feel they need to deliver is "You just dont like him because he is black."

I got a couple people at work who keep telling me this.

Embarrassed? No, of course not. That is to be expected when dealing with a deity as breathtakingly nuanced as our future Great Leader.

Obama is far above us mortal men. The best we can hope for is the enlightened columnists at the New York Times to mediate for us, like delphic oracles, so we can get a mere glimpse of the all encompassing brilliance of the Obama mind. He can embrace all sides of every issue all at once! Its is we who should be embarrassed for our small, bigoted insistence on petty consistency.

If you compare Barack Obama and Al Franken you find out what is really wrong with that other party.

Both are symbolic of a party that has no bleepin' clue how to check out candidates. There are a lot of people uncomfortable not with race or some other immutable characteristic (although in fairness, Franken has some really scary eyebrows). No, the real issue for many undecideds or moderates or independents is that they don't KNOW these people and the more they learn the more they don't like...

It is almost as if the party decided that if a candidate meets a litmus test on a couple of issues and has a scorching case of Bush-Derangement Syndrome, that they are automatically in.

It worked so well for Ned Lamont, right?

AP at Hot Air has this thread about BHO's radical friends and the link to BHO's book.

Hamering at this, a decades-long link to Marxism/Hatred-of-America, is bound to cause major problems for BHO.

But this year no one in the family, from the moderate liberals to the arch-conservatives, wants to ask them about Obama. It's as if we think they might like him and we can't stand to know that. Like a line would be crossed.

Obama And Hillary Spoke Privately On Sunday Night
By Greg Sargent - June 2, 2008, 3:26PM
Obama campaign spokesperson Bill Burton confirms to me that Obama and Hillary spoke privately on Sunday night -- but those looking to read their conversation for clues to how or whether the race will end tomorrow may be disappointed.

"They did speak," Burton tells me via instant message.

Asked if they had discussed anything relating to post-primary activities, Burton said: "He called to congratulate her on her victory in Puerto Rico, that's it."
[Link: tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com...]

"Earlier in the day it was reported that Clinton staffers were being urged by the campaign's finance department "to turn in their outstanding expense receipts by the end of the week," another sign that the run at the White House was nearing an end. In addition, Politico wrote that members of Clinton's advance staff had received calls and emails Sunday night, summoning them to New York City and telling them their roles on the campaign are ending."

Lyndon Johnson was the shiznits.

I mean you just can't improve on social visions like Pruitt-Igoe or Cabrini-Green anywhere these days, no matter how hard you try. It's a central reason why the progressive African-Americans continue to support the Democratic Party in huge majorities to this day. especially in large post-industrial cities, where they've fared exceptionally well...

God bless LBJ!

Herbert, like dozens of other columnists across the nation, is steeped in the post-modernism of today's leftists -- there is no such thing as objective truth, there is only the narrative.

The narrative for Obama has already been written. He is the post racial healer, he brings the insoluble together, he is hope and change made flesh.

They will not abandon the narrative. They will squeal in delight at Obama's audacious nuance, his ability to bridge the chasms between the worlds of black and white, and all the shades in between. They will accuse his doubters of bitterness and hatred, of trying to kill the New Way in its crib, of clinging to the grotesque failure that is America before Obama.

After all, these are people who still believe in socialism, in marxism, in maoism, in any-non-Americanism... despite their histories unblemished by success for the better part of a century. They will do what they do best -- lie and spin -- because their entire self image and world view depend on it.

Most important vote tomorrow - in South Dakota.

LINK

Union County residents vote Tuesday on Hyperion Resources' request to zone nearly 3,300 acres of pristine farm land north of Elk Point as a development district for the $10 billion oil refinery, billed as a potential step toward national energy independence.
The proposal has been a contentious issue in this southeast corner of South Dakota, with supporters citing economic development benefits and opponents voicing environmental and quality-of-life concerns. Both sides have been campaigning door to door.
Just under 10,000 of Union County's 13,462 residents are registered to vote Tuesday.
The Hyperion Energy Center would process 400,000 barrels of thick Canadian crude oil a day, which company executives say would help the U.S. reduce its dependence on overseas oil. Construction could begin in 2010 and take about four years.

Project opponent Jason Quam rejects the argument that Union County needs saving. The county is doing well economically with a low unemployment rate and one of the highest median household incomes in the state, he said.
Quam, a Union County resident with the group Citizens Against Oil Pollution, said he thinks much of the refinery's public support comes from outside the county.
He believes residents will reject the proposed zoning change, saying they realize that a refinery would bring unneeded pollution to a beautiful area built on agriculture.

Dreams From My Father..........I almost felt sorry for him when I read it. We could blame his father for deserting him, to be sure. But his self-loathing, anti-white, Marxist mother is the worst offender, I fear. Very sad, because he is not an idiot at all, and he could have done so much had he not been schooled in racial obsession.
In the end, he chose to be an ideological dupe and a manipulator, rather than a thinker and a doer.

ETA: Right on top of the Bakken oil field.

Well, the Bakken area is in ND, and even then the output there will not be that significant. More importantly, if the proposed refinery is designed for the product of upgraded Canadian tar product then that is a different source than the Bakken area oil (which is supposedly fairly high quality.)

Nevertheless, you raise and important point - NIMBYism. It turns out that yesterday an interesting bit of research was released:
Nine Out of Ten Americans Making Lifestyle Changes to Cope With Rising Energy Costs, RBC Survey Says

[...]
Americans' NIMBY "Not In My Backyard" syndrome also appears to be waning. Only 16 per cent of Americans said that they would oppose the construction of any type of energy plant or facility in their hometown, down from 23 per cent in 2007. Seventy-one per cent of Americans said they would support an alternative-energy system in their hometown, including a wind or solar facility, up from 58 per cent last year; 34 per cent would support a clean coal technology plant (up from 27 per cent last year); 32 per cent would support a liquefied natural gas facility (up from 25 per cent last year); and 21 per cent would support a nuclear power plant (up from 17 per cent). Nevertheless, the survey found that although a majority of Americans attribute the rapid rise in gas prices to a lack of oil refining capacity in the U.S., eight out of 10 said they oppose the construction of an oil refinery in their hometown.

The Times will print a retraction, on page B-11, in the lower right-hand corner.

In 6-point print.

In Swahili.

You'll no more get a retraction out of the times than you'd get an apology from a puppy for pissing on the carpet. The NYT is a reactionary mouthpiece of leftist self-justification, not a producer of rational, considerate writing.

Uh, I don't know about that entirely. This guy has found a way to sell the proverbial snake-oil from the back of his El Camino to a lot of people.

Are the people stupid? Sure, some are.
Is the media giving him a pass on a lot of stuff? Often, yes.
Does he (or do his people) have a plan and some good sale jobs for us dumb bitter hicks? Polls suggest, yes.

Regardless of what is underneath it would appear he is selling at least some people on his cure for sanity. Does he get all the credit? No, but he must be doing something effectively.

Obama leads McCain in MN, WA and OR.

MN -- 47 to 42
WA -- 52 to 36

This is Survey USA's poll among Registered, not likely, voters. Just released but the poll was done 16-18 May, at Obama's peak.

The Psychedelic Furs are not a band I see mentioned often. I only have MP3s of "Love My Way" and "Pretty In Pink", but I do know who they are. ;)

I remember when Boston's WFNX would actually play so-called "alternative" music. I used to stay up listening to them in the wee hours of the morning when I was a teenager...

They're a turn-off for her, too, but she can put that aside and enjoy some good butt-kickin'.

Also, when they're on broadcast TV, it isn't like she's paying royalties through some theater chain or video rental to watch them.

I just want to go on record as saying that 3OT Red Wings/Penguins game tonight was insane! Sure Detroit still has the lead in the series, but how much of a kick in the gut must it have been for the Red Wings organization to be not even 35 seconds away from wheeling out the cup and skating that celebratory lap when....whoopsie...that critical tying goal slips by Osgood.

re: #345 savage_nation

Now a small story.

I fought for the right to continue raising our son when my wife split, with "her" son, even after I begged her to stay.

"I know what I'm doing..." she said.

When our divorce came to court (in the moonbat capital of North-West America) our judge had an unbroken record of awarding to mothers. Period. State habit was 19 to Mom for every 1 for Dad.

16 months later, after firing my lawyer and writing my own "Motion to Reconsider and Reverse", he DID reconsider and DID reverse his previous decision, for the first time in his judgy life/career!

So my ex kidnapped the boy!

re: #344 song_and_dance_man

My son, 14, just last week bought a Zeppelin poster and is now hanging on his room wall. Not that I'm proud of that, but it serves to show that great music was generated in the 70's and is recognized by kids nowadays.

I took him to see Rush a few weeks ago and he absolutely loved it. He is now a Rush fan and has included many songs from them on his iPod. And for what it's worth, because of my influence he is a Beatle music fan.

Truth!

Well, originally he had 7 points in his Decision.

By the time I entered the motion, I could show that 5 of them were moot, or negated, and one was of much lesser value now because of the negation of the first 5 points.

And I suggested that taking the boy from me, who'd been raising him all along for 4 years since birth, -JUST ON THE STRENGTH OF ONE benefit- would effectively deprive him of Daddy benefit, stability, and Mommy's visits.

Ping.

He reversed his ruling.

It seems Mr. Herbert has done what so many leftist intellectuals do: he has attempted to interpret rightist conclusions through the lens of an assumption unique to his leftist worldview. If one begins with the assumption that human nature is basically good, it is quite logical to have a leftist endpoint. It is my belief that many on the Left are either not aware that their conclusions derive from this originating assumption or that they believe that this originating assumption is universal. Therefore, they tend to see only one possible logical path which leads, of course, to only one possible logical endpoint: leftism. Any deviation from this endpoint cannot be logical and, therefore, must be due to "racial prejudice, ignorance, hostility," etc.

An ape-man and ape-woman had just gotten back to their cave when the female got up on two legs and started walking around.

"What the hell are you doing?" the male asked.

"I don't know," she replied. "I just suddenly felt like walking upright."

It's for 3 jugs, and it's not cheap, but it's there.

Yes, you did! :)

Ma Sands--adding a little lemon juice to the water increases its acidity (which is good for, um, things) and, I think, makes it tastier to drink.

(well, duh, adding ANYTHING to water, a tasteless liquid, will make it tastier, but you know what I mean,,,)

Has anyone actually SEEN this mythical "whitey" tape?

/other than "mythical" people, that is...

447 EE  Tue, Jun 3, 2008 3:55:08am

After Obama jumped upon Hillary Clinton's statement to the effect that actions are more important than words, and pretended that that was an insult to Martin Luther King Jr. (as if giving credit to LBJ for the Civil Rights Act was a racist act), Obama doubled his percentage of the black vote, going from about half to almost all of it.

The ravings of Wright that were publicized only re-inforced his standing in the black community (according to polls). Pfleger's ravings did not harm Obama among blacks either, to judge from the response in Trinity.

You can also find videos on the internet of Obama reading statements from his book Dreams From My Father, in which he emphasizes a black grievance against whites. Obama not only issued the book, but he issued a version of it with him reading the book. Audio is how the Ayatollah Khomeini made his case in Iran, and Obama used a similar method.

Obama did a lot more than just secure almost 100% of the black vote by doing this. He also secured the Dem nomination, because of the fear that since Obama was the candidate of the black community (almost 100% of blacks supporting him), by denying him the nomination the Dem party would be alienating the black community ("for the next 20 years", according to Charles Krauthammer's statement yesterday, June 2, on Fox News Special Report).

Obama's Philadelphia speech turns out to be a bunch of malarkey. Obama is a racial candidate who is an opportunist, and has for 20 years been associated and identified with the most extreme racist preachers on the south side of Chicago -- Jeremiah Wright, Michael Pfleger, and to a lesser extent but still important Louis Farrakhan. He has zero credibility as a President who will unite the country -- whether on race or on ideology or on any other matter.

/other than "mythical" people, that is...

I think it's real, and someone in the Clinton fold is holding it as leverage with the DNC. Hillary wants a final decision held off until then. If they decide for Obama before then, I'd bet it will be released as part of an scorched earth approach.

If someone in the RNC has it, I'll be furious at their leaking this now, unless he really thinks that Hillary would be easier for McCain to beat in November.

451 goddessoftheclassroom  Tue, Jun 3, 2008 3:59:08am

re: #447 EE

Excellent post, as usual EE! :-)

goddess,

It will be over by tomorrow, I think. As I said yesterday, the DNC can't NOT give the nomination to Obama. They've calculated that if they deny it to Obama they'll lose the black vote forever. I'm guessing they think that the Hillary women they've alienated will come back, most by the November election.

And I suspect they've seriously underestimated the anger they've generated among a large percentage of Democratic women.

Good morning lizards, this must be the DDT for the day.

It's 63 degrees and cloudy here along the Lake Michigan shoreline, and I'm a very happy Marine mom today. The USS Nimitz is pulling into San Diego this morning, and I have officially survived my childs' first deployment with my nerves still intact.

First day off today that I've had in a while, and it's good to sit and relax on the DDT with a cup of coffee while I shuffle loads of laundry. I used to be worried about not having enough work to provide for my family... now I have more work than I can handle.

Any new information about the "whitey" clip?

Way, way OT (but on an overnight thread, is anything on topic?):

Here is the moronic blog comment of, oh I don't know, the entire history of the internet. From Patterico (a post on prison ships), a liberal (to be kind) poster calling himself 'Levi' (comment # 85):

You don’t have to read something to know its contents. I’ve gotten A’s on papers I’ve written and tests I’ve taken about books I’ve never read. The ACLU nicely summarized the key points, but I’ve been repeatedly chided for linking to ‘leftist’ websites, so I thought I’d give you the straight up report. What else can I do? Do you want the link to the ACLU summary so you can just dismiss it as leftist propaganda and you can start rolling out your ACLU talking points? What’s the god damn point?

Also, it’s not a dodge, and I freely admitted to not reading the thing, primarily because it is physically impossible for me to do so, so you didn’t ‘catch’ me doing anything. I’m just trying to be practical. And I know that 300 page documents is too much reading for this sort of forum anyway, I linked to it mainly to illustrate a point. That’s also why I gave you the other link, to the very simple picture that very effectively proves how very full of shit this administration is. I’m just trying to help you out.

LOL! No wonder progressives/liberals are unable to debate on facts. And to think somebody actually typed that post because, uh, oh what's the point? This moron links to sites/items he has not read to prove his points! And admits not reading the links he posts like it's some sort of badge of honor! Not to mention believing an ACLU summary of a 300 page report on torture as gospel because they are "a reliable, meaningful source," but I digress. I really think those first two sentences should be immortalized in some sort of Internet Comment Hall of Fame, or Shame, as the case may be.
