Hillary's Open to Being VP

Tue, Jun 3, 2008 at 1:23:50 pm PDT

Looks like Hillary is bowing to the inevitable triumph of the most left-wing presidential candidate we’ve had in at least 32 years: Clinton says she’s open to being Obama’s VP.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton has told congressional colleagues she would be open to becoming Barack Obama’s vice presidential nominee, saying she would consider it if it would help Democrats win the White House.

Clinton, a New York senator, made the comment on a conference call with other New York lawmakers Tuesday, according a participant on the call.

If she takes the VP slot, her run for President in 2012 is a guaranteed failure - because Obama will be worse than Jimmy Carter.

So ends Operation Chaos - I would say an unprecedented success, considering how much of Senator Obama's dirty laundry was aired over the previous months. The fact that even Democrats are starting to consider voting for McCain speaks volumes about what a monumental screwup this man is as a politician and a Dem. I don't even think having Shrillary as his #2 would save him now (and in my personal opinion, I think that would sink him even lower).

The Clintons have an unusually large number of associates who turned up dead in odd circumstances. Even if one thinks that the Clintons are blameless, why should Obama take such a chance? Obama will find someone other than Hillary to be the VP candidate, but one who has the Clintons' approval.

There was a time I would have agreed, but my guess is the Obama supporters who have declared they would never vote for Hillary have already forgotten they ever had a negative word to say about her. They are on-board, excited, and salivating at the idea that they have this in the bag.

McCain and Mitt (and I like Mitt, more than McCain) won't inspire that sort of devotion on our side, in my opinion. I can't imagine who McCain could pick to avoid a defeat.

I think we just lost the election. Worse, the country itself. Democrats will be in control, and they are crazy. The inmates just took over the asylum, and I'm not sure anyone will survive.

Sane Yanks should be rightly terrified at both Obama and Hillary having access to all national security secrets.

Still, I think Hillary is playing this with a strategery in mind. For example, if she knows a bombshell against Obama is coming down the pike that forces Obama to withdraw, she can then retain Obama's base. Because they will have already made nice by teaming up against the Republicans. There is more going on with this rash of news stories than we are at present understanding.

IMHO.

Obama still has enough negatives to have to dance to their music, and they are desperate to win.

re: #85 addison,

Richardson comes to mind for a couple of reasons. He is hispanic, but you are correct that his name doesn't sound hispanic. This allows Obama to play to both the hispanics (who see him as one of their own) and to whites (who hear a white sounding name). True, New Mexico doesn't bring a lot of electoral votes, but the last several elections have been really close (remember, Bill Clinton never got 50% of the vote) , so every little bit counts.

More importantly, Richardson doesn't piss anybody off. True, he has no loyalty, but he's a Democrat. That kinda goes with the territory.

It could be someone else, even Hillary, but I think she comes with some awful big negatives for the general campaign as VP. I can already see the ads quoting her about Obama's unfitness for office being ginned up by the 527's. And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

re: #105 ghost707

Yep.
After 4 years of Obama - Hillary will be stained with the abysmal performance of the Obama Presidency, and no one will want ANY Democrat within a mile of the White House.

I don't think history supports that. For example, every city that is a corpuscle on the rear of America is a product of Democrats (Detroit and Washington, DC the two most striking examples). Despite this, election after election, people vote overwhelmingly for the same group of people who made their city horrible in the first place.

People rarely learn.

124 lostlakehiker  Tue, Jun 3, 2008 1:51:06pm

re: #24 capitalist piglet

Makes you wonder. I don't think McCain could beat the two of them together.

All this confidence, and no substance.

McCain can win. Obama can win. Both are real possibilities. It all depends on the campaigns each runs, and on random external events.

For my money, Hillary won't get the VP invite. She's said too much that she shouldn't have said. She cannot help carry a swing state. She rubs a lot of people the wrong way. Obama's best bet is a moderate Democratic governor. If he thinks he needs a woman on the ticket, Sibelius of Kansas makes more sense than Hillary. But does it really have to be a woman? A nod to the "experience" theme Clinton was using would suggest a more prominent governor with more experience, and from a more important state.

re: #81 jamgarr

If he picks her I'll suddenly become a believer in the Michelle "Whitey" tape.

Howie Carr, on his radio show, mentioned the tape and said that Kennedy and Johnson didn't get along in the Senate. He claimed that Johnson had something on Kennedy and Sam Rayburn brokered a deal where Kennedy would make Johnson the VP and Johnson would make the "something" vanish. Howie claimed that they and their staff never got along during their time in the White House. He ended his story by saying, "We all know how that worked out!"

INTERESTING!

the most left-wing presidential candidate we’ve had in at least 32 years

Wait, that doesn't make sense. 32 years ago was 1976. I assume you are referring to Carter and not one of the eventual losers of the Democratic primary. But Carter ran again in 1980, so if you mean that he is the most left-wing since carter, then you really mean 28 years.

But I'm pretty sure that the most left-wing candidate we've had was McGovern, which would put the counter at 36 years.

let's see...
...first, openly pontificate what your opponents assassination might mean to your political future...
...second, offer your services as that candidates vice president...
...who could possibly turn that down?

We're talking about Hillary here. In most cases I would agree with you, but not this one...I may eat crow. She has a lot more power as a Senator and only reason she would take the VP slot is to make history.

Yes we are talking about Hillary. As an Arkansan I have had ample opportunity to watch her. Bill loved the game. Hillary loves the power. If she takes the VP spot she will be counting Obama's heartbeats.

Hillary wants POWER. She will not be denied! Bill and HIllary want back in the white house.

I fear that Obama will cave to the media pundits who made him what his thinks he is, they are all wanting Hillary as his VP.. just to see how she pulls of the assassination.

How is anyone going to ignore the man-whore at the V.P.'s house making cookies telling everyone how big a dumba$$ Obama is and how big a shill the media is for him. Yeah Yeah Yeah, it was all said in the heat of the political battle and they can put aside their differences for the good of the dem. party,,, only until Bill tips back a few and reminds everyone how He was the 1st black Prez and why don't BHO and HRC take a road trip and he and Michelle will throw a tea party , just the two of them.
