The only change I want is from a cashier. Hope is what springs eternal in the breast of men, not a political campaign. Progress is what I see when I make improvments in my life. Anything else is just pure snake oil and flim flam.

Looks like India might just start to reduce their oil consumption:

India to raise fuel prices

Interesting thing here is that India subsidizes fuel heavily, so Indian consumers haven't seen the runup in prices that we have seen and thereby haven't had much in the way of a disincentive for higher consumption.

We should all hope that Asian demand growth for oil slows a bit so that prices drop. Until then they are unlikely to.

Good morning, lizards. I know I'm late to the topic, but this fining of Brigitte Bardot for expressing her disgust of Muslim practices is, to say the least, ominous. The fine had a 15,000 euro price tag.

So what better way than to start the morning by throwing up a little in your mouth at this absurd, pusillanimous, dying-by-degrees little episode in Eurabian history?

Gas price is down to 3.93 per gallon overnight... woo f*ing hoo.

I'm telling you, Congress needs to do something about the exhorbitant gas prices RIGHT NOW. If they don't get a grip on it - and soon - the American people are going to start responding with widespread violence (much of it aimed at public officials) instead of the standard bitching/moaning and moonlight gas thievery.

The guys that I really feel sorry for are the truckers, who have to fill up on diesel to earn a living... oi.

66 DistantThunder  Wed, Jun 4, 2008 5:01:48am

I left the thread last night at 12:36pm ET to go back to cleaning my carpets - so much easier when all the kids aren't running through the house. My son, 19, rouses himself to walk outside and call his girlfriend so he can get cell phone service.

Suddenly, some teen age punk drove by, got out of his Mustang, started calling my son names, and said, "You thought you'd get away with this Brett, (not my son's name)"more profanity - all the while slashing my son on his arm with some sharp object.

My son, 6'2", comes running in the house significant blood running down his arm telling me to call the police. Said he'd never seen this kid, 5'6" before in his life. Couldn't see that he had a knife. We got the bleeding under control and I did some first aid.

So we had NJ finest state police - one guy was a jerk - to investigate this bizarre attack. Of course they asked if it was some drug deal - my son is getting ready to go into the airforce and told them absolutely not. Even volunteer a drug test. They said no.

Very odd occurrence in our quaint secluded town in the Wharton forest in south Jersey.

From yesterday's BOTW (last item)

The Associated Press reports from Crow Agency, Mont., on one of the final campaign events of the 2008 primary season:

The purification ceremony isn't an everyday ritual of U.S. presidential politics.

The newly named Awe Kooda Bilaxpak Kuuxshish--better known as Barack Obama--faced east, the symbolic source of new life. His adopted Crow father, Hartford Black Eagle, prayed over him.

Afterward, they walked arm-in-arm with Black Eagle's wife, Mary, to a podium, where Obama promised to live up to the meaning of his new name: "One Who Helps People Throughout the Land."

No doubt the Republican Attack Machine will insist on calling him Awe Kooda Bilaxpak Hussein Kuuxshish.

snark, snark.

Yeah, the cops thought that it was just like finger nail slashes, but the 5 cuts were very clean, and it was way too much blood for finger nails - there was blood all over my sink. So I have to check today to make sure his tetanus is up to date.

Sunday we had son, age 9, step on a rusty nail at a friend's, so we are on 10 days of antibiotics with that -

Always happens that Mr. DT is conveniently out of town for the drama.

Morning goddess, are you done with the school year? Mine are done next week. But, since they didn't want to cooperate with the old man 2 of them are going to summer school for a month for reading! Mwahaha!

The school year has finished, but I have to finish moving to a new class room.

I got a call from an angry parent who was "trying to understand how her son failed." I patiently went over EVERYTHING with her, including how I passed him last quarter because he started working harder but his average was three percentage points under the minimum pass grade. Anyway, my patience evaporated when she said, "Maybe if he got to work work with computers instead of just sitting at a desk in your class the whole period..."

I was white-hot furious. I told her that we acted out Romeo and Juliet, but her son CHOSE to do nothing but sit in his seat. I closed the discussion at that point.

I can take being called strict, old-fashioned, demanding, even sarcastic, but I will not stand for being called boring,

Church of England accused of censoring debate on Islam

A meeting of the Church's "parliament" was due to discuss whether clergy should be doing more to convert British Muslims to Christianity.

The sensitive issue was highlighted last week by a senior bishop who accused Church leaders of failing to reach out to other faiths, and warned that radical Islam is filling a gap in society caused by the decline of traditional Christian values.

But now the Church has put off the debate on recruiting Muslims until next February at the earliest and will discuss the promotion of churches as tourist attractions instead.

Church of England accused of censoring debate on Islam

Heh.

This is the heart of the approaching schism in the Anglican Community. The Church of England and The Episcopal Church (USA) have shift ever further left in changing their mission to "social justice" rather than the charges given to the Church ins Scripture. A Church that has chosen a direction other than that given in the Bible has chosen the wrong direction.

Many people thing that the break in The Episcopal Church is based around the ordination of the openly gay bishop, but that is just an example, not the cause, of the problem.

We orthodox, traditional types know we're supposed to strive to live our lives according to the "rules," not change the rules to accommodate our lives.

re: #141 Peacekeeper

What's interesting (and confusing) is that so many media outlets are reporting like it's over. Then these stories pop up where she says it's not over. Sounds like the Dems and their media buddies are giving her the bums rush.

They want her to just shut up and go away -- it's like with Cindy Sheehan. They've had their fun, but now they want to move an and adore Obama and trash McCain, and she won't get out of the way and let them -- the MEDIA -- the HIGH PRIESTHOOD of politics, decide for us whom the gods have chosen.

The Romans, when they held elections, voted by tribe in a large building on the outskirts of the city. Voters would assemble and line up by tribe. As each tribe came forward and people would cast their votes, the priests would observe and decide what was happening. For the Romans, voting was a form of divination -- it was the gods, not the people, who decided. Hence at a certain point, if the voting seemed consistently to be going in one direction, the priests would stop the voting and declare a victor.

The media sees themselves in the same role -- they, not the voters, decide who the candidates are and who should win. They possess, or so they think, the arcane and occult knowledge of political processes and, above all, are custodians of the public good, or as the Romans might say, the "res publica." And as a self-appointed priesthood, they believe without a doubt that they, not the voters, are the only ones with the knowledge to decide who should rule.

In the Roman case, the practice meant that a candidate only had to curry favor with a minority of the electorate -- winning a majority in the first two or three of the 12 tribes was usually sufficient, so that's where they'd pitch their message. You didn't need a real majority, only to win certain "key" interest groups and the priests would finalize your victory. The MSM functions much the same way.

Moral: As the number of voters increased, and the stakes in elections rose in the late republic, demagoguery triumphed over discussion of issues. The last phase of the republic saw the election of a series of men who set themselves up as dictators -- Marius, Sulla, Pompey, Caesar. And the republic degenerated and fell. And Augustus arose to pick up the pieces. The priesthood played a signal role in bringing this about.

Is our pious devotion to the MSM so strong as to allow us to permit the new priesthood to demolish the Republic?

On some other message boards I read people are talking about the need to bring the country together over all else. But then they go on to say Obama is the one to do this. How the hell do they reach this conclusion? Is it all his shady ass friends he has? Is it his by the book far left voting record? Is it his radical church? McCain has a record of bipartisan legislation. He said himself last night that Obama has never once stood up against his own party, put his own ass on the line, for the betterment of the people. Not once. How on earth do people think that is the man to unite the country? I'm at a loss on this one...

I don't know much about the inner workings of the CoE, but I think it's moral bearings are what are preventing it from becoming more socially liberal on "gay and women's issues". As for it's spiritual bearings, I think they are the source of its current difficulties.

Jesus was a true radical of his time when it came to women's issues. He granted women legal and spiritual rights and freedoms unheard of in that culture. He is truly a liberator. But within that freedom, there are guidelines that keep the relationships between men, women, and God sacred.

It is actually quite interesting that one of the leading figures in the attempt to save the Chinese at that time was a German industrialist. Since he had to toe the German line, he was "officially" a member of the Nazi party. He used his armband to good effect to try and minimize the damage. He returned later to Germany and was active on the German side of the war, but then again so did most Germans.

An older, white haired man walked into a jewelry store one Friday evening with a beautiful young gal at his side.

He told the jeweler he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend.

The jeweler looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring.

The old man said, "No, I'd like to see something more special."

At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. "Here's a stunning ring at only $40,000" the jeweler said.

The young lady's eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement.

The old man seeing this said, "We'll take it."

The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the old man stated, "by check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I'll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds and I'll pick the ring up Monday afternoon," he said.

Monday morning, the jeweler phoned the old man. "There's no money in that account."

"I know," said the old man, "But let me tell you about my weekend!"

Don't know if this is in the spin off links but:

New report identifies dangerous Web domains
SAN JOSE, Calif. - When surfing the Internet for safe Web sites, not all domains are equal.

Companies that assign addresses for Web sites appear to be cutting corners on security more when they assign names in certain domains than in others, according to a report to be released Wednesday by antivirus software vendor McAfee Inc.
McAfee found the most dangerous domains to navigate to are ".hk" (Hong Kong), ".cn" (China) and ".info" (information).

Of all ".hk" sites McAfee tested, it flagged 19.2 percent as dangerous or potentially dangerous to visitors; it flagged 11.8 percent of ".cn" sites and 11.7 percent of ".info" sites that way.

A little more than 5 percent of the sites under the ".com" domain - the world's most popular - were identified as dangerous.

More spammers, malicious code writers and other cybercriminals can establish an online presence when domain name registry businesses cut requirements for registering a site in order to boost their profit and profile. The report doesn't identify domain name registration companies McAfee believes are responsible for those lapses.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, of companies are in the business of registering domain names; some are large and well known, while others are small and less reputable, offering their services on the cheap and with flimsy or no background checks to lure in more customers.

Well, hang on. Henry VIII broke with the Roman Catholic Church at a time when the RCC was pretty corrupt--the Pope denied H8's petition for an annulment on political, not religious, grounds (I completely agree with you that H8's motives were not altruistic). The Anglican church was a product of the Reformation in terms of its 39 Articles of Faith, which H8 had little to do with.

Any bakers in the house? I have a recipe for bread that was my mom's and cannot find Rolled Wheat. I have never made it but used to help her years ago. I vaguely remember getting groceries at a large bulk place and I think that is where we used to get all of our baking/canning stuff. I have been to several large grocery stores, including a couple that carry bulk items. I have NOT gone to Whole Foods, but did look on line briefly last weekend. Unfortunately, mom is gone and so is the knowledge.

Suggestions?

Yes. I do feel like I'm living on the pages of Atlas Shrugged.

Chris Matthews can use that in his next joke.

During MSNBC's live coverage of Tuesday's Democratic primaries, co-anchor Chris Matthews poked fun at Larry Craig's bathroom arrest during an interview with Minnesota Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar as he referred to Republican plans to hold their presidential convention in St. Paul, and joked that Craig would be starting his book tour at the airport. Moments later during an interview with Clinton campaign advisor Lisa Caputo, he joked about the Minnesota bridge collapse as an embarrassment Republicans would have to face when they come to the state: "We're having a little bit of fun here tonight with the opportunity of Republican conventioneers to arrive at the airport out there and immediately go to the Larry Craig Memorial Bathroom and check in and let everybody know they know some history. Then go to the bridge that fell down in St. Paul. There's a lot to celebrate for the Republican conventioneers as they get together."

Please dont forget that one may buy an annulment from the catholic church. Rep. Joseph Kennedy did just that, after being married for many years and having children. Gun-toting taxi rider takes driver for a drink

DESTIN - A taxi driver said he was in fear for his life when he went with an armed passenger into Woody's Safe Sex Bar — then asked a doorman for help.

The passenger, 36-year-old Jalal Farrakhan, is charged with aggravated assault, carrying a concealed firearm and carrying a concealed firearm into an establishment licensed to dispense alcoholic beverages, according to the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office.

Farrakhan pulled a .40-caliber Glock firearm in the back of an Emerald Coast Taxi, the driver told lawmen. He said he pulled back the slide and chambered a round, then said he should have "bumped" the driver as well as two other riders.

The driver said to "bump" is slang for killing.

They drove to Woody's on Harbor Boulevard, where Farrakhan told the driver to come in for a drink. He complied, but told the doorman on his way in that Farrakhan had a gun.

A deputy arrived and found the Glock concealed.

Farrakhan is listed as self-employed in real estate out of Atlanta.

Also don't know if this is in spin off links or not (they are almost as long as this thread) but:

U.S. warships to leave Myanmar after aid refused

BANGKOK (Reuters) - U.S. warships will soon leave waters near Myanmar after the ruling military junta refused permission for the delivery of aid supplies to the cyclone-stricken Irrawaddy delta, a top U.S. commander said on Wednesday.

Admiral Timothy Keating said the USS Essex group will sail away from the former Burma on Thursday but leave several heavy-lift helicopters in neighboring Thailand to assist in the relief effort.

"Should the Burmese rulers have a change of heart and request our full assistance for their suffering we are prepared to help," Keating, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, said in a statement.

Myanmar has been promised millions of dollars in aid from the United States, other governments and aid organizations.

But the junta has refused to allow the U.S. military to help distribute aid to affected areas, appearing due to fear that a large-scale international relief effort would loosen the grip the generals have held since a 1962 coup.

Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej told visiting U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates in Bangkok on Sunday that the junta had rejected foreign military help in delivered cyclone aid because it feared it could be seen as an invasion.

Keating said they had made 15 attempts over the past three weeks to convince the regime to allow in U.S. helicopters and landing craft, "but they have refused us each and every time."

I need to give my Golden a bath, even I notice his odor now. I also should get him groomed for summer, but I've seen some Goldens after they've been groomed and they look stupid.

Luke was having fun with a couple of toads last night. He knows not to hurt them, "but they move daddy".

I used to send my golden to a groomer, but I never liked the way she looked afterwards either. I have learned to cut her myself. Although sometimes in the heat of the summer I will take her in and get a short clip just for the coolness factor.

I guess you're going to swelter again down there, supposed to rain again today. Here's sumpin my momma sent me.

A PIN DROP

When n England at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building. He answered by saying "Over the years the US has sent many of its fine young men into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those who did not return.
YOU COULD HAVE HEARD A PIN DROP.

Then there was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break one of the French engineers came back into the room saying, "Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intend to do, bomb them?" A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: "Our carriers have 3 hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency power to shore facilities: they have 3 cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 peolple 3 meals a day; they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day; and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured. We have 11 such ships. How many does France have?
YOU COULD HAVE HEARD A PIN DROP.

A US Navy admiral was attending a naval conference that included admirals from the US, English, Canadian, Austrlaian, and French navies. At a cocktail reception he found himself standing with a large group of officers that included personnel from most of these countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks, but a French admiral suddenly conplained that whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, "Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French? Without hesitating, the American admiral replied, "Maybe it's because the Brits, Aussies, and Americans arranged it so you wouldn' have to speak German."
YOU COULD HAVE HEARD A PIN DROP.

A group of Americans, retired teachers, recently went to France on a tour. Robert Whiting, 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carryon. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically. Mr. Whiting admitted he had been to France previously. "Then you should know enough to have your passport ready." The American said, :The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it." "Impossible! Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France." The American senior gave the Frenchman a long, hard look. The he quietly explained," Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-ay in '44 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find any Frenchmen to show it to."
YOU COULD HAVE HEARD A PIN DROP.

A veteran--whether active duty, retired, or reserve--is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to "The United States of America" for an amount "up to and including his life."

John Cleese has sent a letter to the citizens of the United States of America concerning the Revocation of their Independence.

In light of your failure in recent years to nominate competent candidates for President of the USA and thus to govern yourselves, we hereby give notice of the revocation of your independence, effective immediately.
> Her Sovereign Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will resume monarchical duties over all states, commonwealths, and territories (except California, which she does not fancy).
> Your new Prime Minister, Gordon Brown , will appoint a Governor for America without the need for further elections. Congress and the Senate will be disbanded. A questionnaire may be circulated next year to determine whether any of you noticed.
> To aid in the transition to a British Crown Dependency, the following rules are introduced with immediate effect:
> You should look up "revocation" in the Oxford English Dictionary.
> 1. Then look up aluminium, and check the pronunciation guide. You will be amazed at just how wrongly you have been pronouncing it.
> 2. The letter 'U' will be reinstated in words such as 'colour', 'favour' and 'neighbour.' Likewise, you will learn to spell 'doughnut' without skipping half the letters, and the suffix 'ize' will be eliminated.
> Generally, you will be expected to raise your vocabulary to acceptable levels. (look up 'vocabulary').
> 3. Using the same twenty-seven words interspersed with filler noises such as "like" and "you know" is an unacceptable and inefficient form of communication.
> There is no such th ing as U.S. English. We will let Microsoft know on your behalf. The Microsoft spell- checker will be adjusted to take account of the reinstated letter 'u' and the elimination
of -ize.
> 4. July 4th will no longer be celebrated as a holiday.
> 5. You will learn to resolve personal issues without using guns, lawyers, or therapists. The fact that you need so many lawyers and therapists shows that you're not adult enough to be independent.
> Guns should only be handled by adults. If you're not adult enough to sort things out without suing someone or speaking to a therapist then you're not grown up enough to handle a gun.
> 6. Therefore, you will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous than a vegetable peeler. A permit will be required if you wish to carry a vegetable peeler in public.
> 7. All intersections will be replaced with roundabouts, and you will start driving on the left with immediate effect. At the same time, you will go metric with immediate effect and without the benefit of conversion tables. Both roundabouts and metrication will help you understand the British sense of humour.
> 8. The Former USA will adopt UK prices on petrol (which you have been calling gasoline)-roughly $6/US gallon. Get used to it.
> 9. You will learn to make real chips. Those things you call French fries are not real chips, and those things you insist on calling potato chips are properly called crisps. Real chips are thick cut, fried in animal fat, and dressed not with catsup but with vinegar.
> 10. The cold tasteless stuff you insist on calling beer is not actually beer at all. Henceforth, only proper British Bitter will be referred to as beer, and European brews of known and accepted provenance will be referred to as Lager. American brands will be referred to as Near-Frozen Gnat's Urine, so that all can be sold without risk of further confusion.
> 11. Hollywood will be required occasionally to cast English actors as good guys. Hollywood will also be required to cast English actors to play English characters. Watching Andie Macdowell attempt English dialogue in Four Weddings and a Funeral was an experience akin to having one's ears removed with a cheese grater.

> 12. You will cease playing American football. There is only one kind of proper football; you call it soccer. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (whi ch has some similarities to American football, but does not involve stopping for a rest every twenty seconds or wearing full kevlar body armour like a bunch of nancies. Don't try Rugby - the South Africans and Kiwis will thrash you, like they regularly thrash us.
> 13. Further, you will stop playing baseball. It is not reasonable to host an event called the World Series for a game which is not played outside of America . Since only 2.1% of you are aware that there is a world beyond your borders, your error is understandable. You will learn cricket deliveries.
> 14. You must tell us who killed JFK. It's been driving us mad.
> 15. An internal revenue agent (i.e. tax collector) from Her Majesty's Government will be with you shortly to ensure the acquisition of all monies due (backdated to 1776).
> 16. Daily Tea Time begins promptly at 4 pm with proper cups, with saucers, and never mugs, with high quality biscuits (cookies) and cakes; plus strawberries (with cream) when in season.

I think the bigger question now is, is she really willing to settle for the VP slot? It just seems so contrary to her "win at any cost" personality. OR may be right and this is a calculated move on her part to not concede and thus garner the VP slot, but I don't see her being comfortable with that. She can't have an ace up her sleeve or she would have already played it. So the only hope she has is to start working on the superdelegates, but many of them are so sick of the Clinton family that they probably wouldn't even meet with her.

It's just too odd.

I had married myself a few years prior, and moved out of town. My priest had died, and a new asshole was there. When I went to the church to obtain my records, for my nephews baptism,, He, /Father Coleman(sarc tag no mistake),(now a bishop) told me I could not have them because he had never seen me in church. I'm afraid my Italian temper got the better of me, and I told him that what he meant to say was that he had never seen my check in the collection plate. I left, called Boston, who told me that even if I had left the Catholic Church altogether, those were MY records, and to return to the church, they would be waiting for me. /Father sent his housekeeper out with them.

He's such a fantastic manager of money and human resources. I think it will work out really well if he's recommending it.

Given their incompetent leadership in recent years (EXCLUDING Thatcher and Blair) he should be asking the US to take over not-so-great Britain.

Don't forget the extra "i" in aluminum.

That's what he mentions in the first place. And sorry, Brits, you're wrong; it was named "aluminum" by its discoverer, Sir H. Davy.

WTH? If you call the rectory, they are supposed to release those records to you. I had to get the baptism record from where I was baptised in Michigan. I have not been to that church since I was less than a year old, yet they simply sent the record where I needed it to go without any problems what-so-ever (no fees either).

Sounds like something stinks in the Boston Archdiocese.

Im not saying that there are not annulments granted properly. I AM saying, that they can be bought when the grounds cannot be met thru canon law

Yes, and did you read how he & Robert Mugabe agree the only way to solve the world food crisis is to have food distribution controlled by the UN? That Mugabe is such a super-genius when it comes to food & economics.

I'm sure that they'd make sure all their UN affairs are well-stocked.
If they could find anyone still producing much food.

re: #299 Kenneth

This is probably not worthy of its own thread, but the big news in our household is the young lad has accomplished his first poop in a toilet!

When my nephew was first learning that, he successfully went in the toilet and was so proud of himself that he asked my brother to leave it there so his mother could see it when she got home.

A bit later, my brother peed and instinctively flushed. Next thing you know, my nephew is bawling his littles eyes out, saying "Daddy, you flushed my turd!"

I recall quite clearly when aluminum was aluminium here in the US as well as in the UK. And cooperative/cooperate were spelled co-operative/co-operate. Many other examples. All the "new and improved" US English has come about in about the same time period as spell check, poorly programmed by CS majors that could do calculus but did not spell well.

If you have a corrupt leader and governing board, anything can be bought. Doesn't matter if it's clergical or secular, they still aren't following the law.

I wouldn't be too sure there. Barack Hussein might be President soon. Not to mention Carter and Clinton in recent years.

As I suspected, after reading the thing again... John Cleese did not actually write this. It's not up to his standards; not terribly clever.
