I cannot pick any one guitarist as personal favorite.

How can I compare Segovia to Iommi?

How can I compare Mason Williams to Dave Mustaine?

How can I compare Les Paul to Yngwie Malmsteen?

How can I compare Leadbelly to John Williams?

Sorry Icarus, I can't even pick one bass player as a favorite. Chris Squire or Billy Sheehan or Les Claypool?

It's all about the current mood I'm in at the time of the picking.

Yes. It is too bad that certain of those things are not on a bad word filter to force people to think. It can be awfully easy to say something the wrong way or in a fit of anger.

Serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.

Bah, I am in a foul mood. I know Charles and many lizards are fond of jazz, and I must admit that Keith Jarrett (sp?) is a talented fellow (as well as trained in classical music). But I am going to take this one day, the day on which my beloved son receives his Ph.D. from the physics department at Harvard University, a fallen institution but still the oldest educational establishment in British America, to cry out for traditional Western culture and regally to claim that if it ain't Bach--or in this case, Buxtehude--, it's schlock. After all, Buxtehude was manning the ramparts in his cathedral in Denmark when the jihadis were repulsed at the Gates of Vienna in the 1680's.

(This ContraJihadi turtle will henceforth retract his head into his shell and cease comparing jazz with the old music.)

Actually it isn't a particular headache. Most forms scripts come with a built-in bad word list. Some webmasters choose to turn it on, others don't. Some choose to add or subtract words from the list.

Even adults have bad days, off moments or say things in a way completely different from what they mean now and then.

Bach would have been among the biggest jazz enthusiasts ever. He constantly pushed the envelope. He would've loved its development of harmony, its love of improvisation (an art almost dead until Bach came along and revivified it by improvising fugues), and its sheer brazen vitality. I have no doubt in my mind that, on strictly musical terms, Bach would have not only understood but have deeply admired twentieth century jazz music. He was always hearing the note around the bend.

It isn't for me. But then when I first took biology way back when our teacher took the bull by the horns and said "this is what religion teaches" and "this is the theory of evolution."

And BTW, when I taught Anatomy and Physiology I had more than one student who insisted that men and women have different numbers of ribs (Eve made from Adam's rib.) We used to make them count the ribs until they were satisfied.

Science is about inquiry. If you leave out part of the inquiry, then it isn't science, it is voodoo.

COULD JINDAL BE McCAIN'S REVEREND WRIGHT?

...Mr. Jindal supports teaching creationism. In September 2003, the Associated Press reported his answering "yes" on the Louisiana Family Forum's voter guide as to whether he favored teaching the "scientific weaknesses of evolution" (creationist codetalk) in public schools.... When a reporter asked his position on teaching creationism, Mr. Jindal's response clearly favored undermining the teaching of evolution: "With evolution there are flaws and gaps. I think it's appropriate to tell our students that no scientific theory can prove evolution."

I disagree. From when Ben Stein was sane: How to destroy America

1).... Destroy the knowledge base on which all of mankind's scientific progress has been built by guaranteeing that such learning is confined to only a few, and spread ignorance and complacency among the many. Watch America lose its scientific and competitive edge to other nations that make a comprehensive knowledge base a rule of the society.
12) Elevate mysticism, tribalism, shamanism and fundamentalism--and be sure to exclude educated, hardworking men and women--to an equal status with technology in the public mind. Make sure that, in order to pay proper (and politically correct) respect to all different ethnic groups in America, you act as if science were on an equal footing with voodoo and history with ethnic fable.

We are still ahead in science but how long will that last without imported brainpower? We are rapidly losing our edge.

No worries, I know exactly what you mean, and I largely agree. A lot of jazz is dialed in, run the changes type stuff -- even if it's done at an impressively high level. A lot else is schmaltz. Far too much of it is disconnected from the butt and the juice and overly concerned with the brain or the navel.

That said, jazz is uniquely American and has a distinguished history. We should never tire of celebrating it.

Charles

ID is a reaction against dogmatic atheism and "scientism." Those two things also represent extremes.

I'm perfectly fine with a science teacher saying, "well, there are still questions that need to be answered in evolutionary theory." What I'm not fine with is a science teacher saying, "there's a problem in the theory here, so let's stop scientific inquiry and chalk it up to a Creative action we can't fathom." That kills the spirit of free inquiry and is bad for kids.

Sure you can. The results are not always pretty, but you "can." I monitor a science web site for middle schoolers that has blocked almost everything you can think of. One morning another monitor and I tried very hard to have a discussion about breast cancer. Very hard to do without mentioning the word breast. Or any of the million other words on the list. They forgot to block the ones the kiddies use to hit on each other with though. :)

I noticed at my local library the KosKommies, Huffingpo's, and DUmmies are blocked due to profanity. LGF is not blocked.

Silly indeed. I don't see the separation of the two. Either there is a creator who made the wondrous reality about us or there is not. As I have said many times there will never come a time when either side of the issue can empirically prove one side or the other to the satisfaction of the other. My concern is that you have clearly stated that, in essence, by virtue of your objection to intelligent design, that there is no Creator. Now if you believe there is a Creator then surely that Creator must be intelligent.

Maybe you're missing my point. There is a "creationist" agenda that is very deliberately trying to insert the teaching of a bogus pseudo-theory into US schools. This has nothing to do with a general belief in a creator. It has to do with a politically-motivated "movement" that belongs to the far right.

217 hermeneutics  Sat, Jun 7, 2008 5:51:27pm

How about this: We'll voucherize every child and let the parent's decide on the teachings that child receives.

The parents who choose solid scientific and math will give their child an edge. Kids that don't get a good scientific education will struggle to catch up ... but they can.

In the humanities and social sciences this would be revolutionary, you know.

i've insisted on some religiously-based textbooks for my kids, but not in the sciences. In English. They were simply the best in grammar, spelling and writing.

We are still ahead in science but how long will that last without imported brainpower? We are rapidly losing our edge.

I disagree. Virtually all of the foundations of modern science have been laid by people who had a pretty firm belief in G_d the Creator. (Not religion, G_d.) The Theory of Evolution is pretty new as far as science goes and while there is "evidence" there is no incontrovertible proof. One way or another, nobody was there.

Virtually every scientific fact I can think of was at one time believed to be something else and sooner or later what we believe today will be overturned too. Scientific inquiry is about examining ALL of the possible options. When you leave out the idea that G_d created the Universe (whether or not you believe that) you teach people to consider only those facts that happen to fit their premise. That is a sure road to the death of science.

Sigh, I don't want to seem pugnacious, but it really is not an either/or situation as you describe it. An intelligent universe does not eo ipso suggest the existence of an abstract singular intellect supernal to the universe. Unless you should desire, I shan't explicate, but here I shall suggest a third possibility, that the very form of the the material universe is the intelligence of its structure. This was the opinion of Aristotle in pre Christian times, the opinion of Plotinus who lived at the time of Augustine, and the opinion of Nicolas Cusanus who was a cardinal of the Church in the 15th century. Citing these authors does not prove the thesis, but it shows that this third way has been entertained by serious intellects.

Did you know that the plot is the same as a Bohemian fairy tale? A king asks his three daughters how much they love him. the first two go on and on, but the third says, "As much as salt." The king, in fury, casts her out. Her fairy godmother puts a curse on the kingdom that since the king doesn't understand the value of salt, there shall be none--no flavor, no preserving, etc. The kings learns his lesson and begs his youngest daughter to return.

Who are you kidding Killgore? Most of what is today science would have had you burned for witchcraft a couple hundred years back. "Supernatural phenomenon" is a label that means we can't explain this yet. Definitely does not mean that it does not exist.

What are your credentials for laying out the rules of science, anyway? Is there some new international body to lay out science rules I've not heard of? There is at bottom one rule: consider everything. The rest is just ethics.

There is no conflict, and he is at peace with his profession (retired from Pfizer, where his work helped millions) and his religion.

There are some things we can know in this life, and there are some things we can't. We know what science can do -- let's teach that in schools. We have faith in religion -- let's leave that for the churches.

In the version in Hollinshead's chronicle, Cordelia returns with the king of France and wins the battle. Happy ending, unlike Shakespeare's.

We talked about how the area where Lear is bumbling about -- the no-man's land between the daughters' kingdoms -- is a space sort of like Arden Forest, albeit in a negative way. Kent plays the role of Rosalind.

yeah, but the other side of that coin is the almost reverant positions we give in society to the MD, PHD, JD, what have you that makes people gasp when you challenge some bs notion of theirs, and the institutionalized monopoly said above has on intellectual thought. I think just because you listened to some other professor spew dribble for eight years does not necessarily mean you are smarter or more knowledgable in a subject than I am(I'm using "you" in a more third person..wrong I know)...

ID has no credibility in academic circles and has no standing in the legal community. As long as this is the case, it's a non issue for me.

But what is happening right now is a secularist brainwashing of our children. Leftist/secularist teachers ARE using evolution as a tool, NOT to teach science...but to teach children that religion is bad. That it's proof that there is no God.

This is wrong. Science teachers should teach science, period!
This is something that's happening right now! In our schools!

MWAH!

when my classes acted out Romeo and Juliet, I'd ask for volunteers to play the parts but when there were none, I'd start picking victims. One guy asked, "Can't I have a nonspeaking part?" I said, "Fine, you're a tree in the Capulet orchard."

He got up, stuck out his arms, and was a tree.

I had kids begging to be rocks, Friar Laurence's plants, fountains, ANYTHING I could think of. I still had my big parts to fill, but eventually every kid got out of his or her seat to be something.

Best of all, they really KNEW that play from reading, listening, and watching it.

Maybe you're missing my point. There is a "creationist" agenda that is very deliberately trying to insert the teaching of a bogus pseudo-theory into US schools. This has nothing to do with a general belief in a creator. It has to do with a politically-motivated "movement" that belongs to the far right.

On the other hand, there is a militant secularist agenda in many of the public schools that throws out the baby with the bathwater and dismisses all the claims of faith, those regarding piety and morals as well as those regarding natural events, as superstition.

How much more felicity would bless our troubled republic if parents were given more choice on where to send their own children to school, and if fanatical bureaucrats, of either the sectarian or the antinomian variety, held less power over the lives of these little ones!

COULD JINDAL BE McCAIN'S REVEREND WRIGHT?

That's such a bummer. The right has almost completely abandoned scientific literacy. Not good.

I don't know if it's the case on this topic, but I do know that here in Louisiana, various groups have greatly distorted Jindal's "take" on a variety of issues, particularly his Catholicism, with the Dems using scare ads in North Louisiana (non-Catholic) that we here in South Louisiana (heavily Catholic) never saw.
Again, the report you linked to may be accurate, I don't know - I just know Jindal's views are often distorted by those who do not like him.

All that being said - Jindal has a very long way to go to become presidential candidate material. Word I get from people who are in a position to know first-hand, is that his office is a very closed one - he does not listen to or work with anyone. Right now, he is in a little hot water because he is continuing to keep his list of appointees from being sent to the Louisiana senate for confirmation, a necessary step in having those appointments become fact. If confirmation is not received, they will be employed illegally. This is such a small, silly thing . . . and I cannot figure out for the life of me why he isn't taking care of that little piece of housekeeping business. I think he may run out of time to deal with things because he is too intimately involved in every little detail of every little thing. I also know that he tends to simply proclaim what he wants to have happen, without any discussion with or listenting to the experts on the subject, and then he leaves the room without getting an understanding of any of the issues involved in whatever matter he's dealing with at the time. Not a good style for a government leader.

!

I agree with you on that there is a militant secularist agenda, not just in the public schools, but in our public lives, also.

However, as re: what schools teach - during the Intelligent ID/Creationist thread, I came to the conclusion that I really do not want science teachers teaching my child religion. I will see to it that my child gets religious and moral instruction from the religion teachers within my church, and at home. A science teacher teaching my child religion might not be teaching the religion I want taught!

Where the schools fail, in my opinion, is in matters of general ethics, morality and personal responsibility, regardless of whether a person is religious or not.

My kids went to private school. They were taught both things. They turned out A-okay.

A reasonably wide swath of my relatives-- the Zion bunch -- are basically creationists. At my nephew's wedding a couple of years ago I was asked to give the blessing at dinner. I did a riff off of the scripture reading with a sort of Augustinian edge, stressing the creative character of God etc. Later one of my cousins stopped me and praised my prayer, which -- totally contrary to my intention -- was greeted by that part of the family as a defense of creationism.

For my part, I have always had a fascination with the biological sciences and with evolution, and I have never had a problem reconciling that with my religious beliefs. In me, at least, my endless curiosity has led me far in both directions without ever raising a conflict I could not sort out with resort to reason. I've got more thoughts on the subject, but were I to enunciate them would probably piss off legions on both sides, and, at the moment, I need peace and friendship more than quarrels.

I used to say teaching was a simple equation.
X + Y = 100
where X = preparation
where Y = perspiration
Too little preparation and the perspiration goes through the roof. Lots of preparation, very little perspiration. Kids can tell BS and lack of preparation. They have some sort of innate BS detector.

My former husband didn't want me to homeschool when I first learned of that venue, and I was so very sad.......but! --my old pastor used to tell people that I homeschooled my kids more than people who homeschooled, homeschooled their kids..... :)

Evening all! Charles, sorry you had to ban Savage! I dropped out early last night, but had an uneasy feeling about what Savage had been discussing about his daughters BF. Got my bundled Internet package installed today, and its a pretty good deal, 50 plus channels of cable, phones service, and 5 mbs Internet for 70 dollars. I checked the TV and it works, along with the telephones, and haven't looked at the TV since. Internet works great! Who cares about TV!

Where do you live? I pay $119 bundled, but that's with digital HD cable.

There's plenty to be taught about biology without getting into evolution, just as there's plenty to be taught about physics without getting into quantum mechanics. I can't recall if I was taught about evolution in (private) high school, and I only really got a course in it once I went to graduate school.

As important as evolution is for understanding biology, is it really necessary to say more than Darwin developed a theory that explained how natural forces could select for advantageous variations in individual organisms, which under the proper conditions (usually physical isolation and time) could result in sufficient accumulated differences between populations to produce new species.

That's probably all most people would need for scientific literacy, I'd say.

I agree. Fortunately, my district emphasizes positive attributes from kindergarten on up. It's what's expected.

However, we're fighting a popular culture that emphasizes personal pleasure and selfishness above all and that morality is relative. That's where the real damage is being done in many cases.

I have mentioned sitting on a panel with three scientists, two of them Nobel laureates and professed atheists. We saw the world very differently, but agreed that religion, and not science, at least proposes an answer to two questions. (1) Why is there something rather than nothing? (Or, as Stephen Hawking put it, Why does the universe "bother to exist"?) (2) Why is that something so beautiful and orderly?

More memory may not necessarily speed things up but you should be able to run multiple applications, open about 50 tabs or so, have e-mail running, and maybe a YouTube running without difficulty. There probably is some utility that can show when RAM is corrupted/mangled, but I usually can just tell by the seat of the pants. Unfortunately when it gets mangled the only cure is a real cold boot. With laptops, that usually means yanking the battery.

At least at the high school level and lower, I favor teaching science in a hands-on lab fashion, and evolution doesn't lend itself to that approach. Sure you could demonstrate mutations and artificial selection using fruit flies or plants or bacteria, but if you're going to teach evolution in a lab, you'd just about have to make it a computer simulation.

(And, don't get me started on the trend of replacing dissection and some chemistry experiments with computer models!)

Bottom line. If creation is what it is then it must be assigned to a power greater than our feeble discovery of what it all means, or it is a thing that came from nothing and appeared as we now know it from nothing into 'miraculous' complexity.

But is that power external in the sense of separate and abstract? And do such quantifiable notions as "greater," which are comparisons, appertain to an ἀρχή which is said to be subject neither to time nor space nor measure? If so, its supposed infinity lacks this very finitude of creation and so is not an infinity after all.

How is it in the vast continuum that stretches from an unfathomable infinitesimal to an incomprehensible infinite can a discussion that poses "nothing" be even meaningful? Where do you locate this "nothing?" Do you not also see that any "nothing" that can be uttered is, at least to that extent, a something?

What I am trying to demonstrate is that both the materialists and the traditionalists are clinging to supposed dichotomies that are not in themselves real but are fictions of an understanding that does not comprehend the meaning of the concepts it employs.

It is all about self-esteem in the schools now.
Build the kids' self-esteem, make them feel good about themselves.
If everybody grows up with high self-esteem, who is going to dance in our strip clubs?
What's going to happen to our porno industry?
These women don't just grown on trees.
It takes lots of drunk dads missing dance recitals before you decide to blow a goat on the internet for fifty bucks.
And if that disappears, where does that leave me on a Friday night with my new high speed connection?

But self-esteem based on feelings and words alone is hollow and rings false. It collapses at the first difficulty.

OTOH, sometimes it doesn't collapse enough.

Studies have measured the self-esteem of failing and near illiterate high school students, and their self-esteem is through the roof. They think they are great, geniuses, and doing just fine.

It is almost as if the target is backwards and we should be teaching humility.

And, I believe, in many cases, self-esteem based on "feelings" and "words" leads to young people who don't think they have to accomplish anything, that they are just wonderful for simply being. That attitude can lead to all sorts of other problems, including violent behavior - they feel they are "entitled" to do anything that "feels good" to them at the moment.

My EH decided that his "feelings" were more important than his commitments. Egocentricism destroys the fabric of civilization one thread at a time.

Have you heard of cabin percussion. Its a weird phenomena you get by driving a 4 door car with the front windows closed and the rear windows open halfway. At about 40 mph depending on the model, the car gets this really loud on-off sound concussion that is deafening. Contrast and compare to a religion that is all about supremacy, from top to bottom. Mo had critics killed. "Humiliation" today caused his followers to take human life.

Oh, I've heard that, in my car! I didn't know what was happening, I thought the roof was coming off!

Anyone with a kid that needs an original idea for a science project should delve into that. I think what is happening is that air rushes into the car until it pressurizes the cabin and then at some point the pressure gets too high and the airflow changes direction, restarting the cycle. The frequency doesn't seem to change with speed of the car, only the magnitude of the sound.

re: #15 opnion

Who is everybody's favorite guitar man or gal? I vote Mark Noltner of Dire Straights

Mark Knopfler is a very good player. He recorded a CD with Tommy's idol - Chet Atkins, called Neck and Neck. Some good stuff there.

Here's a tune from -

Here's a younger Chet playing Stars and Stripes -

Outside of those two, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Carlos Santana then a whole bunch of rock guitarists like Alvin Lee of Ten Years After

Paco de Lucia is great fingerstyle

Tommy is the best. he's like two Chets.

Don't be offended. This is the place to fact check is it not?

Would you ask your boss that, or someone to who's home you were invited to for dinner?

I would hope not.

Puhlease we were talking about the issue at hand and it was met with a non response. When did we give up on digging another to respond to a question here?

Am I the only one who thinks space has folded?

Look out! I might be a secret atheist, bringing on a new Reich by my support for Darwinian evolution.

re: #499 Killgore Trout

Is there an audio engineer in the house?

I'm a fledgling, self taught sound board operator. Sounds hard knee, fast attack/fast release.

Like they were trying to get rid of some overly percussive feedback, or were trying to accent the melodious tones not the picking?

553 Mich-again  Sat, Jun 7, 2008 9:32:22pm

re: #552 slokat

My experience as a musician and singer is that there are a lot of sound board operators who have no idea what the people in the band need to hear. I can not stand the typical setup of stage monitors with a dry signal, without any voice effects like echo or reverb. I always say I want to hear the same mix the crowd hears, not a dry signal. I'd rather adjust the voice volume myself by backing off the mic when I'm belting it out and getting close to the mic when singing at a lower volume. I don't like to count on the sound guy to turn the gains up and down.

I think the best sound board operators are or have been musicians/singers themselves.

554 slokat  Sat, Jun 7, 2008 9:46:17pm

re: #553 Mich-again

it really depends on the room you are in... reverb through monitors pointed away from the crowd will bounce back at a different timing then the speakers pointed at the crowd. Can set up weird harmonics or even cancel sound.

Ear buds are better than stage monitors for voice, unless someone is way off key or rhythm. I personally did not like my own voice in my monitor mix at all...

re: #459 Charles

Could be. But when it's a YouTube video there are so many levels of audio processing going on it's hard to tell.

It's incredibly difficult to get a realistic acoustic guitar tone when it's amplified to the point where it makes sense in a large hall. I know - I've been there. It's always a compromise.

Sigh...........There always seems to be some uber audiophile out there making comments about audio quality who doesnt actually have the slightest idea regarding the science of acoustic dynamics. I watched the video and listened to the audio tract and this is what I heard.

First, there was a reverb noise gate, sounded like it was in the 10 to 20 ns range. This is pretty typical when amplifying an acrostic guitar and is done to prevent harmonic cycling though the amp producing a ghost delay effect. The nature of the acoustic guitar is that it produces a large range of harmonic overtones, when these overtone cycle through the amp they produce ghost delays which in turn produce harmonic canceling of the harmonic overtone being cycled. The result of this is that the guitar sounds flat and slightly out of tune. So a reverb noise gate is typically used to prevent the harmonic overtones from cycling through the amp and canceling out the overtone series.

The second thing I heard was compression, like the reverb noise gate this is used to produce a buffer between frequencies in order to prevent frequency cancellation. A good audio engineer (and it sounds like Tommy has a damned good one) usually employees a white noise generator and a feedback finder to acoustically map the room/venue before setting the compression and reverb noise gate levels.

Then there was the parametric equalization which sounded like it had a clipping gate connected to it, that or there was a individual noise gate attached to the EQ. It sounded a lot like Tommy was using dual mono amplifiers with separate equalization. The point behind this is that the pseudo right channel and pseudo left channel signals remain separate during amplification further reducing signal degradation caused by frequency cancellation. Typically the (A) channel receives one equalization setting running from bass to mid, while the (B) channel carries the mid to high signal.

All in all I would say that who ever did Tommys sound is not only a minimalist, but a damned good audio engineer.

Now for the things that weren't there.

The single most egregious aspect of this recording had nothing what so ever to do with the way Tommy's guitar was amplified or the acoustics of the room.

It was the artifacts included in to the recording through the digital recording and compression process. Digital recording of analog sound is notorious for its clipping and stripping of harmonic overtones. Since harmonic overtones are in reality resonate frequencies they don't actually exist in digital form. Digital recording sets clipping rates for each frequency at the threshold of human hearing. In other words, if the human ear cannot hear a specific frequency, it doesn't get recorded.

This is great in theory, but in actual practice it results in the stripping of entire harmonic overtone series. Since these harmonic overtones are resonate frequencies stripping them out of an analog signal produces a dissonance that sounds exactly like excessive signal compression.

Sorry but from my own personal experience I would have to disagree with that, in fact my experince is that they are usually the worst. The best sound board operators (audio engineers) are people who have been trained in the theory of acrostics.
